We Heart Jeannette! September 3, 2009

Posted by Elizabeth Barturen at September 3, 2009 3:41 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

Jeannette, the president of the animal rights club at her high school, recently requested a tabling pack from us here at peta2, and I was more than happy to oblige her!

When she e-mailed the pictures to me, I nearly pulled a face muscle from smiling with giddy pride (I absolutely love pictures—can you tell?). She and her fellow club members even collected petition signatures to help animals at their school! It was such a great turnout, and she reported that some people even decided to go vegetarian right then and there at the table!

The best part was that they were able to open the eyes of so many people who weren't aware of what really happens to animals who are exploited for food, and they had so much fun doing it! Check out some of these great pictures:

That sounds like a good time to me! So what's stopping you from spreading the word at school? Of course, before you table at school, a show, or any event, please make sure that you have permission! You can check out our Guide to Tabling for information on what steps you need to take to table successfully!

Sound like something you're into? E-mail us at peta2@peta2.com. If you're not a part of an animal rights group at your school, get one started. Check out our guide to starting a group at your school here!

For the animals,

P.S. You'll be awarded 5,000 Street Team points for starting a group—just make sure you send us photos of an event your group has held!

peta2 Hits Chicago—Rain or Shine June 16, 2009

Posted by Rachel-O at June 16, 2009 2:24 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

There are so many things to love about Chicago! Three of the biggest ones? It's home to Temptation Soy Ice Cream and Chicago Soy Dairy, Chicago Diner, and to two of the best peta2 Street Teamers to ever exist, Jason Levy and Nicole Hughes.

This weekend I traveled with another staffer Caleb, former Star Street Teamer Nikki, and two peta2 interns, Arizona and Kirby, to table at Chicago's B96 Summer Bash to stick up for the countless chickens killed for McDonald's (which is based in Chicago). At the beginning of the day, it seemed like the windy city had it in for peta2—our tent was flooded from rain, there was no sunshine in sight, and forecast called for thunderstorms all afternoon. Luckily for animals, peta2 outreach is rain or shine.

Over a thousand people took action against McDonald's this weekend (did you know that 1 out of every 4 people who sign our petitions at concerts like this or Warped Tour eventually goes vegetarian?) and people pretty much loved us, but who doesn't!?

It turned out to be one of the most positive peta2 outreach events to date—here's what Kirby and Arizona had to say:

"Tabling in Chicago with peta2 was amazing! Nearly everyone in the crowd had a McCruelty sticker on and a ton of people were holding leaflets. The crowd was extremely responsive and people were shocked to find out the horrible things done to chickens at slaughterhouses" - Kirby

"It was the most fun I have ever had, especially fighting for animals! At the Summer Bash in Chicago where we tabled, people were fairly receptive to the information I was presenting to them and so it really wasn't so difficult to put on a smile. Time passed, I forgot I was standing on my feet for 5 hours even. I loved my first experience with tabling and I cannot wait to do it again! I learned so much and have much more confidence in presenting the cause. I was and am so happy to ask, "Have you signed our petition today?" for any animal." - Arizona

peta2 outreach is literally changing the world for animals—what's your best experience you've had while tabling? Leave a comment below!

Stay loud!
-Rachel

The Brock Animal Rights Club Hosts a “Fur Stop”! April 5, 2009

Posted by Ryan at April 5, 2009 1:42 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

Written by Carleen Gigante of the Brock Animal Rights Clubs at Brock University

Brock Animal Rights Club has been at Brock for 3 years. We decided this year to again have a “Fur Stop” which is basically a check point where students can stop and check to see if their fur trim is real or fake, and learn about the cruelty of the fur industry.

We handed out pamphlets and stickers, including a few "I'm an asshole, I wear fur" stickers. A lot of people disagreed with the wearing of fur, but I was surprised to know how many students did not know or did not stop to think about the cruel process of making fur. We also had a few people who wanted to argue with us about the fur industry—and that’s fine with us! We were able to give them enough information for them to finally see that wearing fur isn’t necessary, especially when there are so many fashion options.

Altogether it was a successful day, and we informed a ton of students. We can’t wait for next year’s!

Tips to Tabling From the University of Idaho! April 5, 2009

Posted by Ryan at April 5, 2009 1:14 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

by Kelsey Gibb, president of the University of Idaho's student animal rights organization

Tabling can be a very effective form of outreach, but only if you know how to get the most out of it. Fortunately for us, Kelsey is here to share her knowledge of what works for her—and what doesn't.

Tips to Tabling From the University of Idaho!

1.  Smile and be nice—no matter what.

No one likes an angry activist. Always, always, always be friendly and respectful to the people you interact with. Regardless of what is said, you want to make sure that you and everyone tabling with you take the high road at all times—no exceptions. If confrontations develop explain your position while resisting the urge to defend it—being a voice for animals is always the right thing to do, and people who attack you for it will learn more from your silence than they would from your words that they would ignore anyway.

2.  Give away free things (and be sure to advertise that they're free!).
People, especially students, are drawn to free things. At the University of Idaho (an agricultural college in an agricultural state), we worked hard to make sure that our group was thought of as friendly, nice, and positive to make people more open to our message; giving away things with no strings attached was a great way to do this!

The free things can be free for you also—we had a "free hugs" table for International Hug a Vegetarian Day where we gave away lots of free stickers and literature along with the hugs—free, and fun, for all.

DVDs are super fun to give away—it's rare that people will turn down a free DVD (when offered with a smile, at least) and the video footage is very effective at motivating people to stop eating animals!

Last but certainly not least, stickers, stickers, stickers—not only do people love them regardless of their personal views on animal rights, they'll want to share them with their friends! This helps you—and more importantly, animals—in two ways: It provides random opportunities to talk about animal rights later on, and it "brands" your campus with an animal rights message!

Remember, peta2 will give you free DVDs, stickers, and literature to table with and will keep you stocked all year long!

Tips to Tabling From the University of Idaho!

3.  Educate yourself and make sure that your group members do the same.

The Web site peta2.com is just one of the wonderful ways that you can learn about and stay up-to-date on the many different animal rights issues in existence. Don't get me wrong—I'm certainly not saying you have to be a self-taught genius to help animals, but it certainly won't hurt if you can talk intelligently about animal rights issues. If nothing else, read the literature that's on your table during down time you may have while tabling—it might surprise you how much useful information is packed into one leaflet!

4.  Table frequently.
Speak out for animals as often as possible. The more you table, the more animal rights awareness is raised on your campus. People know you're serious about what you believe in, giving you—and animal rights—more legitimacy. Tabling is like celebrating—there's always a reason for it, and if there isn't you can create one, promoting a club event or a veggie holiday or just tabling for animal rights issues in general. If you run out of ideas or simply need a little encouragement, the folks at peta2 will be more than happy to help you out.

Have Fun Tabling Local Shows June 10, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at June 10, 2008 11:54 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

Ryne is a seventeen year old Street Team superstar who loves to table local shows in Illinois. Here's what he has to say about his experiences ...

How did you get interested in tabling shows?
Well I have been involved with PETA for quite awhile. I've organized tons and tons of demos against KFC, the circus, and the rodeo. I've also started my own animal rights group at my school and another group for people in the Springfield area to get together and campaign for animals. I've also been seeing local bands perform for a long time and felt tabling would be a great way to reach out to people. I get to enjoy music I like and do something positive for animals at the same time. It's a win win.

What is people's response when you ask them to sign the petition?
A lot of people had no idea how animals were treated (for KFC) and I would have to explain to them how their animals endure all kinds of abuse and suffering.

Are the bands supportive?
Most are. The lead singer of one poplar band in Springfield, Midnight Fall, is vegan and has stated that he totally supports our cause. I think most people we've talked to have a lot of respect for anyone that is going to be so active for a good cause.

What are your favorite bands?
I have a wide variety of bands that I like. I luv Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie, Ok Go, Regina Spektor, Alkaline Trio, Silverstein, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Goldfinger (John Feldmann is my hero :D), Morrissey, Earth Crisis, Active Slaughter, Resist and Exist, The Used, Lamb of God, Chiodos, and The Devil Wears Prada. I'm also a big fan of techno and trance. Benny Benassi, Paul Van Dyke, and Cascada are some of my favs. I also luv the soundtrack to Queer as Folk.

What are your favorite foods?
Tofutti Cuties basically rock my life. I pretty much love foreign food : Lebanese, Greek, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Veggie Sushi, Veggie Fajitas.

If you want to be like Ryne and table local shows, drop us a line and we'll send you petitions and anything else you need to get started. Have you ever tabled at a show before? If so, post below with how it went!

-Pulin

P.S.- I like this new video from Last of The Believers featuring former Rise Against guitarist Chris Chasse.
