College Students Are Busy, Busy, Busy! April 7, 2009

With the spring semester coming close to an end, it looks like college students, groups, and activists around the world are rapidly trying to squeeze in as much awesomeness as possible before the clock strikes "finals".

We've been flooded with tons of emails and reports from students, who are all doing amazing work to raise awareness about animal rights on campus. I just wanted to share a few examples with you though, incase they inspire you to organize similar events at your school!

1) The Theta Phi Alpha sorority at York College of Pennsylvania decided to make their spring formal event fur-free, to show that students can get a look that "kills" without harming any animals!

2) The student animal rights club at Brock University (in Canada) decided to organize a concert for animal rights on campus, featuring live bands and FREE vegan pizzas, chili rolls, spring rolls, and nachos for all attendees!

3) Students at Marquette University (in Milwaukee, WI) gathered more than 1,200 petition signatures from people on campus against dissection in the classroom! As a result, there is now a bill in the student government aiming to provide all students with scientific non-animal alternatives.

4) The student group at the University of South Florida worked with peta2 to gather more than 3,000 petition signatures from students, in support of additional vegan options on campus. As a result, the school has now added vegetarian bacon, sausage, chicken, and much more to the cafeteria menus!

So which one inspires you the most? I don't want to rush you or anything, but I know a group of sorority girls that are anxiously awaiting your response ...

Our Fur-Free Formal at York College of PA! April 5, 2009

Written by Chelsea Lin Bosak, a student at York College of Pennsylvania

My sorority, Theta Phi Alpha at York College of Pennsylvania, wanted to hold a Fur-Free Formal this year to show that you don't have to kill animals to look your best. We wanted to show that you can be fur-free and still be stylish (note the little peta2 anti-fur buttons we wore all night!)

Many people do not realize that animals are tortured and skinned alive for their pelts and our sorority wanted no part in this cruel business, so we decided not to allow fur at our event.

With so many cruelty-free alternatives, like pleather, and man-made materials like faux fur, there's simply no excuse to support skinning animals alive for fashion.

Fur-Free Formal 2008! May 12, 2008

Yes, the end of the semester is upon us, and you know what that means... Spring dances!

Regardless of whether it's high school prom or a college formal, end-of-the-school-year dances are the place to see and be seen in your finest outfit.

So of course it doesn't make sense to allow a cruel and effin' ugly product like fur at one of these classy events, now does it? That's why the Zeta Xi chapter of the Alpha Phi sorority at Elmhurst College took a stand, by placing a "fur-free" policy on their spring formal!

As if that weren't enough, we also sent the sorority a "Compassionate Chapter" award from peta2, and enough anti-fur buttons for everyone in attendance! Being kind sure has its rewards, eh?

I think peta2's Dan Shannon said it best when he said "Every woman wants to look her best for the spring formal, but no one will come close to the sisters of Alpha Phi, whose compassion makes their beauty radiate even more. By declaring their biggest social affair of the year to be fur-free, these women are proving that you can have the 'look that kills' without killing animals."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Who Loves Vegan Buffalo Wings??? January 9, 2008

I know I do! That's why I'm thrilled to see that Foodswings (quite possibly the greatest vegan restaurant ever) is hosting what I understand to the first ever Vegan Buffalo Drumstick Eating Contest!

If you are fortunate enough to live within a 3,000 mile radius of Brooklyn, NY (which should be most everybody reading this), make sure to check out the specifics HERE.

As a side-note, this is not the first time that vegan food eating contests have taken place at this remarkable establishment. In fact, while I was on the Taste of Chaos tour last spring, my buddies and I had a vegan whipped cream eating contest right there in the restaurant! Yes, life is tough.

Hey, speaking of awesome things, did you check out this sweet new peta2 frat/sorority logo shirt we have on Cafe Press?

"Savva Lotta Animals"! Get it? Come on, that's comedy gold!

Just imagine it. Between your new trophy from the vegan Buffalo wing contest and a swanky new peta2 t-shirt, you could pretty much be the coolest kid on the block (assuming none of the peta2 staff lives on your street)!
