Say Hello To Anna! May 21, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi at May 21, 2009 9:14 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

I was pretty excited when Anna, a Pleasant Valley High School student, sent us a link to her school newspaper article about a PETA demonstration against the use of animals for their skins.

She did a great job of getting quotes and conveying the message that animals should not be fashion victims.

Here is a quick interview I did with Anna so you can get to know her a bit better ...

How has the response been to your article?
For the most part it has been positive. Our Entertainment Editor is vegetarian so I have had support from her and other friends that are vegetarian. Some of the people that I know think that the PETA campaign against the use of animal fur in the fashion industry is pointless because of the few amount of people who wear fur. But for the most part people think that it's an interesting campaign that PETA has for advocating against the fur industry and found the article insightful.

Why are you interested in animal rights issues?
Before I began research for my article on PETA, I was indifferent about the subject of animal rights. I was never aware of the horrible treatment that still occurred in today's advanced societies. After I wrote my article I realized that there is still a large amount of work people must do, and I feel that we must begin focusing part of our attention on the silent victims that are the animals.

What's your favorite way to educate people about this topic?
I educate people about animal abuse in the fashion industry and the abuses in general by not laughing at their stupid jokes about PETA and the people who advocate against animal abuse. Instead I let them know that there is still a problem. I enjoyed researching my article so whenever I can I throw a fact or statistic about animal abuse there way to let them know it's not a small issue they are usually shocked to learn that something new about the topic.

How did you hear about peta2?
When I was a freshman my first locker had a peta2 sticker stuck on it that read, "I am not a nugget." I didn't think too much about peta2 until this year when I went to the protest against furs and skins and the fashion campaigner, Jena Hunt, suggested I visit the website to learn more about PETA and how high schoolers can become active.

Any advice for other students who want to write about animal rights for their school newspaper?
I would suggest that they attend a protest rally that focuses on what they want to write their article about. When I attended the protest everyone was so nice and welcoming. I didn't know a lot about the animal abuse in the fashion industry until I met the protesters and it truly inspired me to write my article. They were so willing to share with me their experiences and their knowledge about the subject. Also supporting an article with statistics and facts about the topic you write about always makes an article stronger and it makes the reader more aware of the problem.

Thanks again, Anna! If you're looking to write a story about animal rights or otherwise get active for animals, check out the Street Team today!

Fashion Police Hit The Streets May 6, 2009

Whose skin are you in? That is the question. And who has the answer? PETA's sexy "fashion police," of course!

They've been hitting the streets to educate consumers about the injustices facing animals killed for boots, belts, jackets, and other apparel.

I love these photos! So fun and eye-catching. Believe me, everyone around was paying attention to these ladies!

What's wrong with leather? Animals killed for leather are mutilated, treated like unfeeling machines, and denied everything that is natural and important to them on factory farms and in slaughterhouses.

Leather production causes great suffering that people can help to end simply by choosing from the many fashionable alternatives to animal skins!

If you want to avoid a run-in with the "fashion police", make sure you keep your closet cruelty-free. They may be easy on the eyes, but believe me, they're tough on crime!

P.S. Yes I know the last line of my blog is incredibly corny.

Pink and Stella McCartney Unveil 'Stolen for Fashion' in Paris March 11, 2009

Posted by Patricia at March 11, 2009 9:15 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

Stella McCartney's 2010 winter ready-to-wear show at Paris fashion week had a little something extra...our brand new TV ad, Stolen for Fashion.

After showing her glorious new lingerie-inspired collection, Stella and Pink took to the runway to unveil the amazing new 30 second CGI spot, which, by the way, has everyone talking. Stories about it are popping up all over the place which means millions of people are seeing it and thinking twice about who they're wearing.

In case you haven't seen it yet, Pink—who I know I say is great all of the time but in her case I don't think I can say it enough—voices a sweet alligator and the fabulous Ricky Gervais voices a feisty rabbit who confront two fashion violators who've stolen their skins. It's so, so good! Watch Stolen for Fashion already and share it with everyone you know.

Check out the pics from the unveiling below.

The peta2 Advice Blog! September 18, 2008

Not sure what to do if your uniform contains leather or some other animal product? See what you can do!

I'm in color guard at my school, and I found out that our pole gloves are made of leather! I love being in guard and don't want to quit, but I need gloves. What should I do? - Doesn't Want to Be Left Guardless

For this season, ask your coach if you can purchase your own non-leather gloves that are the same color to stay within uniform. This site has some non-leather glove options. For next season, ask your coach if he or she would consider non-leather gloves to be part of the uniform for the whole team. Explain why leather is cruel, and show them the many skin-free options! - Lara

You'll be surprised how easy it is to get animal-friendly non-leather gloves if you just ask, like Lara suggested. But if the chump in charge of the uniforms isn't understanding of your ethical objection, drop us a line and we'll help you step up the pressure with leaflets, flyers, and other resources. Them fools better recognize, peta2's got your back! - Pulin

This is a tricky one! Most people don't know how cruel it is to wear leather, and even more people are okay with just accepting it as tradition. With so many cruelty-free alternatives made now, it makes your job a bit easier though. You can let your school know that leather comes from cows that are abused, and exploited for silly things like coats, seats, and in your case, gloves. Who wants to wear dead animals' skin? Not me, not you—and I'm sure some of your newly informed fellow color guard members will agree that your school should get an alternative. Hand out leaflets and look online with your school for faux leather gloves! - Rachel
