Free Stuff Friday: Sammy the Sea Kitten! May 15, 2009

Ever wonder if fish feel pain? Or if they're as smart as other animals? Well listen up! Fish have fully developed brains and nervous systems, so of course they feel pain. And, when it comes to smarts, these guys are a force to be reckoned with. Did you know they can retain information they learned up to 11 months earlier? I can't even do that! And they don't just use their tongues to catch food — they use them to build nests for their babies and shield them from danger. Fish even experience fear the same way humans do, with increased heart rates and bursts of adrenalin. Even more amazing is that some fish actually enjoy being pet. Yes, pet ... Like you pet your cat. That's why we've created Sammy the Sea Kitten.

Sammy comes fashioned with removable kitten mask and mittens, reminding us that fish have feelings just like those adorable land kittens. And if you wouldn't eat a kitty cat, how can you think about eating a sea kitten?

This week, we're giving you the chance to win our Sammy the Sea Kitten plush toy, along with our peta2 'Save the Sea Kittens!' booklet, complete with leaflets and stickers, to help spread the word to all your friends and family about sea kittens.

Meet Zoe The Sea Kitten! October 10, 2008

So by now, I'm sure you're familiar with sea kittens, and I want you to meet my number one BFF, Zoe the Sea Kitten! Not only is my friend a kitten of the sea, but she's ready for Halloween and is dressed up as a tunacorn! Yep, you heard me right... a tunacorn. She would have dressed up as Hairy Kate and Trashley, but the masks didn't quite fit her. Bummer for her, but you still can!

Zoe and I have a lot of things in common (we're both pretty stoked on the new Alkaline Trio, unicorns, and guacamole, just to name a few), but the number one thing we agree on is that sea kittens are your friends, not food! I would like you to meet my friend Sherman. Sherman is a sea kitten.

Sherman hails from the Jersey Shore. His hobbies include growing ironic mustaches, learning to swim, collecting vinyl, and participating in the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Sherman is sick and tired of people trying to hook him. Can you blame him? What would you do if you got a hook in the mouth after biting into a delicious vegan cupcake you found? Not so fun.

Sherman wants you to help save the sea kittens, which you can do here. You can also create your own sea kitten here. Sherman also asked me to tell you to make a lovely lady sea kitten that is into ironic mustaches.
