Today's blog features guest blogger, peta2 UK's Violet.

Britain's most loved funny man Ricky Gervais is a huge animal lover (in particular, he's in love with his cat Ollie—pictured below) and has decided to give Prime Minister Gordon Brown what for over the fur issue, by writing him a letter condemning the use of real bear fur for the Queen's Guards' caps (aka those daft tall black hats the guards wear).

In the letter, which you can read in full here, Ricky wrote: "The issue I am writing to you about today is not a laughing matter" going on to explain that black bears are slaughtered for their skins to supply the Queen's Guards' with their ceremonial caps.

Ricky adds: "Won't you please take the necessary steps to replace the bearskins used for the Guards' caps with a synthetic material? I understand and appreciate the importance of uniforms, but continuing to use real fur in the 21st century is inexcusable, regardless of 'tradition'."

Ricky, ever the animal defender, has in the past expressed his disgust over blood sports saying, "I can't stand blood sports or any cruelty to animals. I've never understood why anybody would get off on seeing a bull speared. I wanted to batter those people with a f**king spade." Ricky, that's why we love you—you call a f**king spade a f**king spade.
