News! July 2, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi at July 2, 2009 1:27 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

Happy July! I like this month because it's an opportunity to reuse your peta2 flags for the 4th, plus my birthday is this month!

There have been some interesting news stories this week worth sharing, so here you go ...

First off (and no surprise to any of us, really), the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recently updated and re-released its position paper on vegetarian diets. Among the ADA's findings are that, "appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes." Furthermore, it points out that vegetarians "tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates. Vegetarian diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and have higher levels of dietary fiber, magnesium and potassium, vitamins C and E, folate, carotenoids, flavonoids and other phytochemicals." You might want to show that to your parents, teachers, or anyone else who may be trying to give you a hard time about your decision to not eat animals! There's a copy of the press release here.

In other news, did you hear about the pig who escaped during a crash on the way to slaughter, then turned up lounging around in someone's backyard pool?! Seems like the pig's life is being spared, too! Way to go, piggy!

This is a quick feature with campaigner Jena Hunt.

There's this story about a former worker at a turkey slaughterhouse who was caught stomping on a bird's head and slamming another to the ground during a PETA investigation.

And if course, there's a lot more which you can keep up to date on by reading our blog all day, every day! That's where you're going to hear the news most directly from us instead of having your eyes and ears bombarded by ridiculous, overhyped stories about flies and other nonsense.

Thanks! Oh. And I went camping in the Redwoods recently. It was awesome, and I saw lots of animals in addition to trees that are thousands of years old! Here's a picture of a wild elk from my trip!!!

Kingsford the Pig! March 10, 2009

Posted by Marta at March 10, 2009 1:13 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

Remember how pigs are similar to dogs? Well, the L.A. Times blog recently showed just how true this is. Check out little cutie-pie Kingsford below and I dare you not to smile!

Kingsford Goes to the Beach - video powered by Metacafe

Now I'm definitely not recommending you run out and get a piggy of your own to love and adore. Pigs get huge and require a much bigger commitment than many people realize. I just want you to think twice the next time bacon, ham, or pork comes your way, and say no for Kingsford's sake.

Which part of the video was your favorite?

Marta

P.S. Remember—What if a pig said "woof"?

Free Stuff Friday: PETA and peta2 shirts! September 19, 2008

Posted by Lara Sanders at September 19, 2008 12:06 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 387 ) | TrackBack

At peta2, we talk a lot about the easiest ways to be the most effective activists. One simple way to be a great activist is to make sure that you wear animal rights t-shirts as often as possible! They look great, spread an important message, and start conversations. There really is nothing easier. Check out myself, Marta, Shan, Rachel, and Sarah, sporting the best in animal rights clothing:

Want these five days worth of animal rights t-shirts in order to spread the word about peta2 and animal rights? Comment below with your size and your favorite of the five! Three winners will win five t-shirts each! Pretty great, right? I would recommend wearing the "Love Me, Don't Eat Me" shirt first so you can tell everyone to look at our new pig investigation.

Comment now because this contest ends October 3rd, 2008 and the three winners will be chosen and notified by October 10, 2008!

Just so you know...by commenting here, we're taking that as acknowledgment that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Good Luck!

-Ashleigh

Weezer Gets Piggy Wit It June 13, 2008

Posted by Lara Sanders at June 13, 2008 12:02 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

First off, I apologize for the really dorky blog title. Admit it though—you secretly thought it was funny. Anyway, have you heard Weezer's new (Red Album) yet? I downloaded it about a week ago, and my favorite track on the album by far is the bonus song "Pig". To see why it's my favorite, take a look at some of the lyrics...

but now, I've got to die
I've lived a good life I've got no complaints
I'd like to thank farmer keep
for bringin me scraps so for that I could eat
he always had a smile on his face
he didn't want to think of this day
it's finally here...
it's finally here...
oh oh oh

they called me pig
they called me pig

when I was a baby I was so happy
I played with my friends in the mud

I think I love it so much because of the AR-friendly message, and because much of my recent life has been consumed with our new summer campaign Woof! Have you seen it yet? If not, you should. NOW. It's (in my humble opinion) one of our best campaigns yet.

Think About It!

Rumor has it that my all time rock super crush Rivers Cuomo is vegetarian. If anyone can confirm said rumor, let me know!

xoxo,

Lara
