Canadian Seal Slaughter Starts Today! March 23, 2009

Posted by Ryan at March 23, 2009 12:30 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 5 ) | TrackBack

This is it, folks. If you haven't written to the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee yet, now's the time!

Not only did Canada's annual seal slaughter start today, they've actually increased the number of seals that can be slaughtered. This means that seal killers can legally bash in the heads of up to 338,200 seals in the coming weeks. That's right—the world's biggest marine mammal slaughter just got bigger.

Thankfully, the international outrage about this year's slaughter is also bigger than ever, as shown by recent protests across the U.S., Canada, U.K., and this great one, sent to us all the way from the European nation of Croatia.

Incase you need a visual reminder of just how disgusting the seal slaughter is, click on the video below:

Please help us stop this senseless massacre. Click here to take action, and encourage all of your friends to do the same.

International Seal Slaughter Day of Action: What You Can Do! March 13, 2009

Posted by Rachel-O at March 13, 2009 3:30 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 5 ) | TrackBack

Right now, innocent seal pups are being born on Canadian ice. They have no idea that in a few short weeks, Canadian fisherman will come to bludgeon them to death. Once the slaughter starts, many of these seal pups stand no chance. There will be nowhere for them to hide as their fellow pups are killed alongside them. They'll only be able to sit and wait for the same bloody fate.

This Sunday is the International Day of Action against the seal slaughter and seals need your voice this weekend! We need your help to get the word out about the seal slaughter. Here are a few simple things you can do to help put an end to the war on seals.

  • Upload the image below to your MySpace and Facebook and set it as your default this weekend. Make sure you caption it with: "End the Bloody Seal Slaughter: http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/p2_seal_slaughter_09?c=p23412".

  • Update your status on MySpace and Facebook to "Save the Seals: End the Bloody Seal Slaughter: http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/p2_seal_slaughter_09?source=p2advmyscefbstatus&c=p23406" and keep it up today through Sunday!
  • Make sure you've signed the petition against seal slaughter and forwarded it on to everyone you know!
  • Use your MySpace page to save the seals. You can raise awareness with our new MySpace layouts.
  • Check out the new (ridiculously cute) peta2 seal e-Card and send it to everyone you know!

  • peta2 Street Teamers will get 500 points for uploading the image on MySpace or Facebook, and an additional 500 points for updating their status! Just e-mail us at StreetTeam@peta2.com with what you did!

Thanks for sticking up for the seals!

    Stay loud!
    -Rachel

Seeking Justice for Seals Around the World! March 6, 2009

    Posted by Rachel-O at March 6, 2009 11:55 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

It just so happens that the Olympics—one of the world's major sporting events—are happening in Canada next year, and with the world's eye on Vancouver, this is a huge chance to spotlight the shame that is Canada's annual slaughter of thousands of seals who are commonly killed by having their skulls smashed in, or being shot at point blank range.

205,000 seals were killed last year alone—many of them while they were only a few weeks old. The seal slaughter is so sick and cruel that we get e-mails from people who think it must've already been stopped. There's no way in 2009 we can still be bashing in the skulls of baby seals, right? Wrong.

PETA Germany just held one of the most provocative seal slaughter protests to remind people around the world that this is still going on. Check it out:

And PETA's campaigners are visiting Canada to remind Canadians that we're dedicated to getting justice for seals.

If you haven't already, make sure you sign the petition to help save the seals and forward it to everyone you know.

Let's end the seal slaughter once and for all!

    Stay loud!
    -Rachel

With our campaign against the Canadian seal slaughter going strong, I wanted to show you a cool photo from a recent demonstration.

How cute is that seal costume?!

We'd love it if you can support the campaign by adding a banner to your page!

    Here's a real, live example.

    Thanks, buddies!

Help Stop the Seal Slaughter February 18, 2009

    Posted by Marta at February 18, 2009 1:11 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

We always like it when people come up with unique ways to get a message across. A few years back, we posted the claymation video below about Canada's annual seal slaughter. It's so well done that we had to share it again:

Intense, right? Now of course, we never condone violence toward anyone—but this video is a great way to get people thinking about the seal slaughter that takes place every year in Canada.

Last year, more than 205,000 seals were killed during Canada's annual seal slaughter. The way these animals are killed is truly horrifying: Seals have their skulls smashed in or are shot and then skinned for their fur. Many seals are skinned alive on the ice while still conscious.

What can you do to help? Click here to write to the Olympic Organizing Committee and the Canadian Prime Minister and demand that they help bring an immediate end to the seal slaughter. All eyes are on Canada as it prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Let's hope they set a positive example for the rest of the world and stop the seal slaughter!

    Marta

P.S. Canadians, we're going to have a special contest for you soon that involves hanging out with a band. Stay tuned for more info.

Olympian Amanda Beard Bares All for PETA! August 6, 2008

    Posted by Patricia at August 6, 2008 9:17 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

They say that timing is everything, especially in the wide world of sports, just ask two-time Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard. So we were beyond thrilled when she agreed to unveil her new naked anti-fur ad in Beijing just days before the start of the 2008 Olympic Summer Games!

Yes, you read that correctly. The captain of the U.S. women's Olympic swim team unveiled her naked anti-fur ad today...in China...days before the Olympics begin. This is amazing, you know, because most of the world's fur comes from China where dogs, cats, and other animals are kept in disgusting conditions and many are skinned alive. Take that fur industry!

Amanda, who incidentally was on People Magazine's "100 Most Beautiful People" list this year, had no problems stripping for her sexy new ad. "I'd much rather go naked than ever put a dead animal on my body," she told us during her photo shoot. Check out what she had to say in this behind-the-scenes video of her shoot.

We're sure you agree that there's nothing luxurious or beautiful about fur so please pledge to be fur-free today.

    Good luck, Amanda!
