Win A Copy of 'Eating Animals'! November 5, 2009

Posted by Tiffany Wright at November 5, 2009 4:38 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 12 ) | TrackBack

Like a lot of people, Jonathan Safran Foer went back and forth between eating meat and not eating meat. If this is you or someone you know, then you need to hear about his latest book Eating Animals. The book explores the many excuses people use to justify eating animals—from religion to family traditions to "the way it tastes".

So if you're still on the fence about veganism, Eating Animals is a must-read. The book's already been getting people to lead a more cruelty-free lifestyle. Actress and 20-year vegetarian Natalie Portman said Eating Animals turned her vegan. Score for animals!

Not many of us can say we really know what animals on factory farms experience because we haven't been there—but Jonathan has. He ventured onto factory farms to share with you what the animals lives are like up close. What you learn will no doubt make you think twice before grabbing that piece of bacon and drinking that glass of milk. Here's a short excerpt from one of the chapters describing the typical cage for an animal on a factory farm:

Step your mind into a crowded elevator, an elevator so crowded you cannot turn around without bumping into (and aggravating) your neighbor. The elevator is so crowded you are often held aloft.

This is a kind of blessing, as the slanted floor is made of wire, which cuts into your feet.

After some time, those in the elevator will lose their ability to work in the interest of the group. Some will become violent; others will go mad. A few, deprived of food and hope, will become cannibalistic.

There is no respite, no relief. No elevator repairman is coming. The doors will open once, at the end of your life, for your journey to the only place worse (see: processing).

This is your chance to win one of three copies we have up for grabs. Just comment below with what you'd say to someone to get them to stop eating animals. Entries must be received by November 19. The three people with the most convincing comments will be chosen as our winners and notified on November 23.

Natalie Portman Turns Up the Heat on 'Top Chef' October 29, 2009

Did y'all catch last night's episode of Top Chef? I admit, I do watch from time to time but their dishes are usually pretty, well, flesh-filled, and I can only take so much of that before I start yelling at the screen.

So last night, the always lovely and newly twenty-year vegetarian turned vegan activist Natalie Portman was the guest judge ... you can see where this is going, can't you? (Warning: If you haven't watched it yet, there are a few spoilers ahead.)

The "Quickfire Challenge" was about creating TV dinners that were inspired by iconic TV shows, and were of course, all meat-based. Then they announced that the "Elimination Challenge" would be at judge Tom Colicchio's Vegas steakhouse, Craftsteak ... yay, more dead animals, right? Wrong!

Enter Ms. Portman who quickly told the anxious chefs, "I love food. I love eating. I'm pretty adventurous with flavors and different cuisines and the one thing is, I'm a vegetarian." Yes!

Now I won't give everything away in case some of you haven't watched the episode (you must though, it's a good one!) but let's just say, she taught the chefs a thing or two. And score one for the animals!

P.S. Natalie says that it was an advance copy of Jonathan Safran Foer's new book Eating Animals that made her go vegan. For me it was all about the cruelty to animals that I learned about by watching videos like Meet Your Meat. What made you decide to stop eating animals or to make the switch from vegetarian to vegan?

Trashley Trollsen: No Animals Are Safe When She's Around August 10, 2009

In case you're wondering, Trashley Trollsen is as wretched as ever. While other celebs like Eva Mendes, Charlize Theron, Jessica Biel, and Natalie Portman have sworn off fur, the Trollsen twins won't let go of their caveman mentality. Not only are the terrible twosome using fur in their clothing line again this year—no doubt they, themselves, will also be draped from head to toe in dead animals—but apparently Trashley is also a big fan of exotic skins bags, exclaiming in an article on Marie Claire's Web site, the "Crocodile is my fa-vorite!"

She then goes on to review some "fabric samples" for the new line ... "This one is dope," she says referring to a rabbit fur swatch, and then Trashley examines a piece of lambskin and says, "I want to see the belly because I think it would look great across the back of the jacket." Um, no. Rabbits and lambs are NOT fabric.

If peta2 Bloggers Picked the Sexiest Vegetarian Winners June 2, 2008

Posted by Patricia at June 2, 2008 3:15 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 17 ) | TrackBack

The annual World's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity poll is in full swing. I'm sure you've all been wildly voting for your faves. We thought it might be fun to let you see who would win if some of the world famous peta2 bloggers were in charge.

Some_Sexy_Vegetarians.jpg

So here we go, starting with moi...

It's no secret who'll be getting my vote for men, my vote always has and always will go to my Davey Havok. I'll never turn my back on him.

For the ladies, I'm torn between Hayden Panettiere and Alyssa Milano. Hayden is sexy and perky and totally dedicated to helping animals and adorable and sooo tiny that I just want to scoop her up and put her in my pocket!!! But that would be wrong...and weird...so I won't.

Then there's Alyssa...I saw her at PETA's 25th Anniversary Gala and I have to admit, she is without a doubt the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen in person. Her skin was flawless and she didn't have the makeup caked on like some ladies feel the need to do. And she was so sweet and friendly and just seemed like a genuinely nice person. It'll just have to be a tie.

Chris Hannah (Propagandhi)—I'd have a man-crush on anyone who rocks this hard.
Natalie Portman—she was in Star Wars. 'Nuff said.
Dan

For the ladies, my pick goes to Fiona Apple. She hasn't really been in the limelight for a while, but just go to YouTube and look up the music video for Criminal and you will know why she should get the Sexiest Vegetarian title. For the boys, I am going to go with my true love (sorry Matt) Joaquin Phoenix. He is hot and talented and vegan (sigh).Lara

Um, I would like Milo Ventimiglia and Matt Skiba to be the bread for a Marta sandwich please. Wait, did I just say that? *Ahem* For the ladies, I gotta go with Kristen Bell—I love her both for being veg and for getting to say hilarious things as the gossip queen herself on Gossip Girl: "Some people might call this a fluster cluck. On the Upper East Side, we call it Sunday afternoon."Marta

I'm going with Rachel from Most Precious Blood for the ladies because she's done amazing things for the hardcore scene and could probably kill me if I didn't support her. And for dudes, there's no way I could get away with picking just one winner. Since the entire bands are vegetarian for Rise Against and Silverstein, can I call it a tie with all of them? I fear for my life if I'm not allowed to otherwise.Pulin

As Radiohead fan numero uno, I feel a certain obligation to pick Thom Yorke. Unfortunately, all music pales in comparison to the life-changing film that "Requiem for a Dream" was for me. On this basis, I'd be lying to myself if I voted for anyone but Jared Leto. On the female side, there's really no contest. Natalie Portman and I are destined to be together, as proven by the many letters I have sent her publicist. I didn't even need to read the rest of the nominees.Ryan

"My vote goes to Alan Donohoe from The Rakes, he's very sexy and funny and loves cats! I'm also very much in love with Morrissey though, so voting was an emotional rollercoaster!! For the lady I'm going for Alexa Chung because I like her style, but special mention for Tahita from NYPC and Alison Mosshart (The Kills) because they're beauts!"Violet

MARTA!!! I didn't know you had that in you, you naughty girl. I'm very proud. As for the rest of you out there, you only have until June 16 to ensure that your fave celeb veg heads go down in World's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity history. So get those votes in!

Natalie Portman - Leather-free Beauty November 7, 2007

Posted by Patricia at November 7, 2007 11:41 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 18 ) | TrackBack

Natalie_Portman_2.jpgOh, that Natalie Portman. To say she's got a lot going for her is an understatement. She's smart, she's a talented actor, and a budding director now too. She's a muse for leading designers, donates her time to various charities, and oh, yeah, she's gorgeous. It definitely doesn't suck to be her.

I like to think that another reason she's so successful is her compassion for animals. She's never kept her love of animals or her vegetarianism a secret and I like that about her. I like that she talks about why she doesn't eat animals (and it's not because she's worried about her figure...as if she'd ever need to). I also like her sense of style—girl can dress. And she's always wearing the cutest shoes, which just so happen to be animal free!

Natalie recently told reporters that she has special outfits made for her to wear when filming because she won't wear leather. "I'm an animal lover and I've been a vegetarian for 17 years," says Portman. "I won't wear leather in my own life and I won't wear it for a movie either. They have to make me clothes from fake leather."

Brains, talent, compassion, and beauty all wrapped into one glorious little package. If I didn't love her so much I would have to hate her.

XOX

Patricia
