EURGH! They're all a bunch of sickos!

Smear campaigns are not as effective as actually producing something good. Please spend your money and hours on research, spreading facts, and conscientious lobbying, rather than gruesome descriptions aimed at vilification.

hahahaha...I love how you people care more about animals that are suffering in labs than the millions of people around the globe who are suffering from war, famine, and disease.

peta sucks

you people are rediculous. Although some researchers may not treat their animals in a humane manner, I am sure that you have not done all of the necessary backround work to say that these people whom you are naming are in fact "murderers". It is common protocol in science to test on animals before humans, and that should ALWAYS be the case in the event that some sort of horrible side effect shows up. Would you rather have other people be tested on or a common lab rat? If you think that people should be tested on then you should be the first ones in line volunteering. I know for a fact that many of today's life saving drugs were tested on animals first, and we all know that you use these medicines too. Why don't you use your efforts more constructively and raise money to aid the people in Myanmar who were ravaged so recently by a killer cyclone instead of worrying about animals. Hundreds of thousands of HUMANS are at risk of serious infection and death and all that you care about is the "evil eight". get real and get a life.

hahahaha i like how you have to wait for approval to post on your blog too...wouldn't want anyone to know the truth now would we?

U guys seriously suck, they should do the lab tests on you guys

you guys are just a bunch of angry hiipies who probably sit around a fake camp fire eating tofu and singing dumb hippy music like dave matthews. just forget about all this animal rights crap, people will always eat meat because it tastes good!!!

I would like to point out that Duke has the best primatology program in the country, possibly even in the world, and that although this Ryan person claims Dr. Platt is treating these animals completely inhumanely, Duke has actually been active in the protection of endangered species of primates and have been attempting to rejuvenate monkey populations that have been slowly dying. Ryan, I would like to nominate you for March Madness for the drowning of the polar bear, for the starvation of the cubs, for the melting of the ice caps, for the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, for the acid rain that pollutes our waters and so detrimentally affects their pH levels, for the dry salmon runs, for the siltation, for the deforestation, for the erratic weather patterns that have caused such disasters as Hurricane Katrina, floods, typhoons, tornadoes, etc. Before you write someone else off as evil, look always to yourself. Sartre wrote how one man's actions are a reflection of all mankind's actions. Take responsibility for your own shit before blaming others. You want to talk animal cruelty? What about the idiots who were "animals rights activists" who burned down a facility for animal testing-with the animals all still inside? I'm thinking some of those animals would rather be living than burned to death. Ah, the irony and hypocrisy...

honestly, peta, vegetarians, and vegans everywhere are absolutely the most pretentious people on earth. get real.

Why do any of you care that PETA is supporting animal rights instead of human rights? There are hundreds and hundreds of human rights charities and organizations, and few animal rights ones. Someone has to be looking out for animal cruelty. And what's the point of testing on animals first? These drugs are FOR humans, so why shouldn't they be tested on humans? Why should animals be tested when it's not even anything that will benefit them? Animals, and I know this will be shocking to you, were NOT put here on earth to be our personal lab rats. They feel pain like you and I, but unlike you and I, they will have a hard time connecting their pain to the greater good. If you want these drugs tested and people saved so badly, maybe YOU should step up and offer to be tested on.
Also, I am a vegetarian, but I am not "pretentious," as that last one claims. I feel that it is MY right to not eat animals, without YOUR judgment, and to not only not devour some animal that most likely suffered terribly its whole short life, but also to protect myself from the diseases running rampant in the cows slaughtered in inhumane and dirty conditions. One only need look at Hallmark Meat Company as just one of hundreds of examples of these dirty and disgusting conditions. I hope you like your E. Coli, kids.

Although there might be a few who treat animals unfairly, the vast majority of researchers are required to have protocols to minimize or eliminate animal suffering. In addition, most in the field could make more money and get more respect in industry or other careers in medicine but they choose research because they want to make a difference. Most researchers I've worked with are very good people. There may be a couple of bad folks out there but most are very good. Yes, they use animals for their work but there is simply no other way. How about you walk through a children's hospital and see the kids with genetic disorders and say that we should stop working to help these people even though we are currently on track to do so. This research, like many other areas, requires the use of transgenic mice to see how those genes are expressed in vivo and through the course of development. You have to test the alteration of genes in a living organism, there's just no other way.

Also, does anyone really buy PETA's description of a scientists work? The idea that a researcher wrote up a proposal, was approved, funded, and supported by his or her colleagues as a collaborator to carry out a bunch of meaningless work that egregiously tortures animals as its scientific aim seems a little bit suspect.

Lastly, why does PETA attack scientists like this? Why use so much time and effort to attack a group of people who are largely hard-working, well meaning that are underpaid for the long hours they work to identify maybe a few bad eggs who should be punished? There's no lobby for these people. Think about how animals are treated by factory farms in the United States. I'm not saying that eating meat is ethically wrong, but I'm sure most people would want to see the animals in these factories at least have better living standards. Its also a good idea to eat less meat given that overproduction leads to greater pollution. Factory farming is a much harder target so even though there is meaningful change to be made there, they go against easier targets like researchers and foie gras farms because even though there's not much work to be done there they can feel good about themselves with they make a little progress. PETA has good intentions, but the way they put those intentions into practice is crap. We should all work together to make sure animals are treated better but why go after the people who have to have protocols to make sure animals aren't mistreated?

If you're so upset about animal testing in medicine, then next time you're sick or at the hospital you should deny any medial treatment that was tested on animals and stick to prayer. Good luck.

PS. Most people don't get E. Coli infections from eating meat because meat is often cooked. People more often get E. Coli infections drinking infected water or eating vegetables that were sprayed with infected water (vegetables are less often cooked when eaten). The infected water could be polluted by feces from farms or people (sewers leaking into water supplies)

yeah well look at the ecoli like this, when there is an outbreak all the vegetarians will die due to lack of immunity, we could all hope for such a day

"maybe YOU should step up and offer to be tested on"

Why should we? Your the one who wants to protect the animals from, so you should do it. I bet you would feel differently about it after that. I am not one of those people who doesn't respect vegetarians for the beliefs, and the fact that they have the self control to hold to their beliefs, but I do not respect organizations like this. Everyone is different, if we want to eat meat then let us, we won't stop you from eating vegetables. And the reason we do tests on animals is to protect human life. If a rat dies, its not going to go to heaven or hell, it doesn't have a soul, and it doesn't have family and friends that will miss it.

There are countless charities and funds for humans. And even if there weren't, humans are still able to help themselves. Animals are captivated from their homes and strapped to a cold table for hours as the scientists abuse them by injecting them with products and forcing them to smoke. Only to later cut them up and see what the effects were. If the animal survives, their put in a filthy cage to suffer from neglect and depression until their taken out for more testing. Their treating these living creatures as if their tools. Can you imagine a sibling or your best friend being taken away from you to be captivated for merciless abuse and testing for a new hair product?

When charities for humans do succeed, what do you think happens?
They kill more living creatures and digest their abused bodies. They drive cars and pollute the environment, melt the polar ice caps, cut down trees, selfishly demolish habitats of other living things to make buildings, and use everything that doesn't fit their personal need as a personal stepping stone until there are none left.

"And the reason we do tests on animals is to protect human life. If a rat dies, its not going to go to heaven or hell, it doesn't have a soul, and it doesn't have family and friends that will miss it."
What?
Never in my life would I have thought that someone could be this clueless. I can't even say anything. This dipshit's just demeaning itself. I just feel sorry for who ever wrote this to be this ignorant.
