Morrissey - Could We Love You Any More? April 11, 2008

As the bloody seal hunt is once again underway in Canada, our dear friend Morrissey is once again defending the animals who will meet a brutal end at the hands of hunters. I won't go on any longer, because anything I can say, good old Moz can say in a much more eloquent and charming fashion! See his statement below:
"As we all know. the psychologically and constitutionally sickening Canadian seal-kill has started and is once again in full-cry. The horror of the Canadian seal-kill is untranslatable, and although I fully realize that highly concentrated evil exists in other countries - Japan's dolphin slaughter, Iceland's newly-revived whaling, the cat-skinning trade in Switzerland, and China with just about every injustice imaginable - there is something especially menacing about Canada's seal-kill."
"Loyola Sullivan (Canada's Ambassador for Fisheries Conservation) is a man of glacial coldness who claims that the seal-kill is "humane" - a view he might alter if his own skull were cracked open with a spiked axe. The fact that the seal-kill provides a livelihood for fishermen is an insultingly dim excuse for it to take place - after all, the German gas chambers of World War 2 also provided work for someone. The seal-kill takes place to satisfy greed for fur-pelts."
Morrissey is not alone, as Kasabian too join the fight against the seal hunt and indeed, fur in general. Frontman Tom Meighan said, "I think its just common sense really. I mean, of course I don't think it's OK to smash a baby seal's skull. I don't wear fur, it's such an ugly thing to do."
Kasabian, Morrissey, peta2 UK salutes you!

We're Loving Leona! March 28, 2008

One of peta2's new [bleeding] loves (besides Panic at the Disco's single—it's so bloody catchy!) is unsurprisingly the lovely Leona Lewis! Not only one of the most talented ladies in pop, but she's a great friend to the animals and this month she's guest blogging for one of our favourite mags, Cosmogirl!

Leona is managed by fellow animal friend Simon Cowell (yes please) and she's a girl after our own heart. She loves shopping, shoes and handbags, but she also loves animals and knows that they shouldn't have to suffer for anyone's shopping spree. In the past she's said, "I hate the thought of animals being killed just for our pleasure, so I won't wear leather."
Three cheers for Leona!

P.S. Simon Cowell is my ONLY celebrity crush (except Morrissey - but that's different).

Morrissey Pink Committed Dan Mathews book
We have a very special treat for you today—a guest blog from PETA VP Dan Mathews himself. Be sure to check out his MySpace page to see where you can see him at a bookstore near you starting Monday. Enjoy!

Attention anybody who eats vegetables but parties like an animal: join me at a book store near you! I'm hitting the road over the next month, from San Diego to Vermont, to do readings and signings of my twisted animal rights memoir Committed—out now in paperback (see blurbs below from Pink, Morrissey and the Hipster Book Club). The readings are always a blast and attract all sorts: young pierced trendoids, radical grannies, and vegan homos like me!
The book is a breezy read and explains how I first empathized with animals after I realized the bullies who beat me up in high school were the same thugs who mangled the alley cats behind our dumpy apartment. It also reveals some of the ups and downs of being on PETA's front lines, including my favorite jails, my least favorite costumes and the most interesting freaks I've encountered along the way! Maybe you are one of them. Check out this sample chapter—which disses furry Madonna and shows how Morrissey first got involved—exclusive for peta2. And come to my MySpace page for a list of dates.
Hope to see ya soon!
"Mathews writes with the infectious exuberance expected from a sunny California punk rocker, and he almost makes readers wish they were present for the demonstrations and the break-ins perpetrated by PETA. Charming, breezy, and thoughtful, it's easy to forget that Mathews is the vice president of a highly provocative animal rights group. But despite the occasional descriptions of animal cruelty, Committed is a lively romp through an oft-misunderstood sub-culture that may just change people's minds about the way they eat and what they wear."
-Hipster Book Club
"Hilarious! It's like James Bond with freaky costumes, police chases, jet-set intrigue, and a kick-ass sense of justice."
-Pink
"Twenty years on I am still in awe of Dan. Every single day of his life he is in a different corner of the world saving animals—none too big, none too small, none too far away. Dan is there, getting arrested, causing a flurry with the press, and his success stories are phenomenal. He is the ideal American hero."

Morrissey Shout-Out! July 10, 2007

When I was just a young tyke, my babysitter, who sported a pink mohawk, introduced me to The Smiths. Ever since then, I have had a deep fascination with Morrissey and his highly coifed hair and impeccable taste in clothes. But it wasn't until years later—when I went vegan—that I really appreciated the man who coined "Meat is Murder."
Not only is he a music icon, he is also known far and wide for his animal activism. That's why I am so excited to pass along the following report from his VA Beach show last night:
"...three songs into the concert with the sold out crowd going absolutely mad, Morrissey paused to say that he was very gratified. A thunder of cheering applause interrupted him, so he said coyly, 'You haven’t even heard what I'm gratified about yet...' And he continued, 'I'm very gratified to be so close to the international headquarters of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.' Wild applause!"
That gave me chills. The good kind.
