Calling All Canadians: Eat Some Vegan Chicken At KFC July 21, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at July 21, 2008 2:50 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 15 ) | TrackBack

Thanks to the KFC victory in Canada, we've got some pretty cool news. If you are near a Canadian KFC, please take advantage of the offer for a buy-one-get-one-free coupon on KFC's new Classic Vegetarian Sandwich! The sandwich will be offered at more than half the KFC stores in Canada, and the coupon will be valid at participating locations. Just order it with no mayo and on a wrap and it's vegan, too!

KFC Canada's new animal welfare plan and the vegetarian sandwich are enormous victories for PETA and animals. Unfortunately, outside Canada, KFC has not acted to stop the worst abuses of chickens.

Please contact KFC and demand that it adopt the same animal welfare plan as its Canadian counterpart, including the introduction of vegan chicken—tell the company that until it does, you will boycott the chain. You can contact KFC by using this online form or calling 1-800-225-5532. The campaign outside of Canada needs your help so check it out.

Thanks!

- Pulin

P.S.- Of course you'll get tons of Street Team points for supporting this mainstream vegan option at KFC Canada. Details here.

How Much Pee Is In That Bucket Of KFC? July 16, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at July 16, 2008 4:47 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 33 ) | TrackBack

Hopefully the answer to the question, "Who wants piss in their food?" is that no one does.

Unfortunately, a family in Nebraska recently won $40,000 from a jury after suing a KFC outlet for serving them food containing urine and spit. You can read about it here.

So yea, the couple sued the company when their sons, who were four and seven years old at the time, got sick after they ate the food. The younger boy vomited for hours and was hospitalized for gastroenteritis and dehydration. Turns out there was spit and urine in their meal. How gross is that?

And not to mention that it wasn't all that long ago that KFC supplier Tyson Foods was exposed as a worker pissed on the conveyor built which moved the chickens for slaughter.

This all reminds me of the site KFCMadeMeSick.com.

I've heard about the Colonel's "secret recipe," but I didn't know it got this bad!

If you want some super limited edition stickers which say "Urine Trouble, Colonel Sanders: Stop Abusing Animals" (the image is featured above), leave a comment with one reason (or more) that you think KFC is gross. We'll send a bunch to five lucky peeps.

You have until July 21st. Winners will be contacted on July 22nd.

These Chickens Have Spoken June 3, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at June 3, 2008 10:03 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 4 ) | TrackBack

If you haven't heard about some historic progress on the Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign, check this out.

Vegan "chicken" at many KFC Canada locations and some groundbreaking welfare standards for these birds makes me really impressed with the hard work you have all done on the campaign. Of course, we're still campaigning against KFC in the US, UK, and elsewhere around the world. So check out some ways to get involved.

And if you need even more inspiration to be part of this campaign, take a look at how much fun these birds have while celebrating with some grapes (they're straight-edge so no wine for them)...

Yes, I know it's best to go vegan to save animals (My friend Leopold doesn't want to be eaten at all), but the progress we're making within these industries is also important in a long term movement to save all animals from suffering.

Thanks, friends!

Major Victory for Animals in PETA's KFC Campaign June 1, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at June 1, 2008 5:15 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 18 ) | TrackBack

Thanks to the hard work of caring people around the world—especially in Canada—we're now ending our Kentucky Fried Cruelty boycott in Canada. The boycott everywhere else in the world is still on, though!

Basically, following months of closed-door negotiations between PETA and KFC Canada (which is owned by a different company than KFC restaurants in other countries), KFC Canada has agreed to a historic new animal welfare plan that will dramatically improve the lives and deaths of millions of chickens killed for KFC Canada.

According to its new plan, the company will take the following actions:

  • Phase in purchases of 100 percent of its chickens from suppliers that use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK)—the least cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed. KFC Canada is the first major restaurant chain to commit to phasing in the exclusive purchasing of chicken meat from CAK slaughterhouses.
  • Add a vegetarian "chicken" item to the menu of 65 percent of all Canadian KFCs. (Order it in a wrap without the mayo and it will be vegan!)
  • Improve its animal welfare audit standards to reduce the number of broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds.
  • Urge its suppliers to adopt better practices, including improved lighting, more space for birds, lower ammonia levels, and a phaseout of growth-promoting drugs and breeding practices that painfully cripple chickens.
  • Form an animal welfare advisory panel to monitor the changes and recommend further advancements.
The boycott will continue in other countries where KFC has restaurants, including the United States, until they follow KFC Canada's lead. If you're outside of Canada check out some more ways to step up the pressure and sign the petition here.

Thank you. It's so clear that your hard work is making a difference!

Why Is the Colonel at a Crack House? May 12, 2008

Chances are that you hate KFC just about as much as your final exams (actually, probably more).

Well, we have some brilliant new anti-KFC ads that we wanted to show everyone. They're amazing. What do you think of them?

Take a look at all three and comment back with which you think is the best of them all.

Street Teamers Mean Business! April 15, 2008

Posted by Marta at April 15, 2008 10:59 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

Nothing makes us happier than seeing Street Teamers out doing awesome things for animals. So you can only imagine how excited we were to have well over 100 Street Teamers come out to our 'Kentucky Fried Cruelty' protest in Toronto after peta2's Take Action conference recently. Check the video out for yourself below. I dare you not to smile when you see so many wonderful people protesting the way that KFC treats its chickens.

Okay, as if that isn't awesome enough, check out this Street Team report we received recently from 17-year-old Chelsea Lang in Chico, CA:

A man who worked at a local radio station (KZFR 90.1) talked about a KFC protest I had on the radio. Then about a week later he called me and asked if I would come down to the station and do an interview. So my friend and I went there and did an interview live on the air. We talked about all of the cruel ways the workers at warehouses treat the chickens and explained the standards PETA wants KFC to meet. We also talked about KFCcruelty.com and said to Boycott KFC!

Have you done something awesome to help animals recently? Tell us about it at StreetTeam@peta2.com!

WOW! As if there was ever any doubt that Canadians rock, this question was laid to rest this past weekend at the peta2 Take Action Conference!

Over 175 students attended the event, making it far and away the most successful one yet! Here are a few of the highlights, and you can also check out lots of other pictures on our Flickr page.

Here is peta2 head honcho, Dan Shannon, addressing the crowd during the "Animal Rights 101" segment!

Say hi to all of the blog readers!

At the KFC demonstration after the conference!

Finally, this blog would not be complete without one of my personal highlights. Here are Brendan and Ayden (brothers who attended the conference together), singing their anti-KFC songs, including a spin-off of the holiday classic, "Silent Night". :)

All in all, it was an incredible experience, so keep your eyes and ears open for when the Take Action Conference comes to your town!

Hey Canada, Help Chickens! March 3, 2008

Posted by Marta at March 3, 2008 4:06 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 15 ) | TrackBack

By now, the vast majority of you know that KFC means bad news for chickens. KFC is responsible for the deaths of roughly 1 billion chickens each year for its restaurants, and they have a responsibility to make sure that the worst abuses of these animals are eliminated—like making sure chickens don't have their throats slit while still fully conscious and aren't scalded alive.

We want to make sure KFC in Canada gets the message that its suppliers need to start treating chickens better, so please take a moment to call and ask that KFC make improvements in the ways its animals are treated:

Here are some things to keep in mind when you call:

- The laws that are meant to protect chickens in Canada are seldom enforced.
- KFC is allowing birds to have their throats slit while they are fully conscious and scalding them to death in tanks of hot water meant to remove their feathers when they are already dead.
- KFC is lagging behind the industry. Burger King, Wendy's, and McDonald's have all pledged to make improvements in the way they treat animals.

Please remember to be polite—no one wants to listen to someone who's mean, right? After you call, drop us a line at StreetTeam@peta2.com letting us know how it went, and we'll give you 500 Street Team points. Not only that, a chicken will thank you personally. Okay, not really, but that would be sweet, wouldn't it?

Marta

PS - If you want to make a 'Kentucky Fried Cruelty' sign of your very own, you can do that here.
PPS - If you think you're super-cute—and you don't eat animals—nominate yourself for Cutest Vegetarian Alive!
