Major Victory for Animals in PETA's KFC Campaign June 1, 2008

Thanks to the hard work of caring people around the world—especially in Canada—we're now ending our Kentucky Fried Cruelty boycott in Canada. The boycott everywhere else in the world is still on, though!

Basically, following months of closed-door negotiations between PETA and the company that coordinates the purchasing of chickens for all Canadian KFCs, the lives and deaths of all chickens killed for KFCs in Canada will be improved by a historic new animal welfare plan.

According to the new plan, the company that coordinates the purchasing of chickens for all Canadian KFCs will take the following actions:

  • Ensure the phasing in of the purchase of 100 percent of chickens from suppliers that use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK)—the least cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed.

  • Improve the audits used to monitor chicken suppliers to KFCs in Canada to reduce the number of broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds.

  • Urge the chicken companies supplying Canadian KFCs to adopt better practices, including improved lighting, more space for birds, lower ammonia levels, and a phase-out of growth-promoting drugs and breeding practices that painfully cripple chickens.

  • Form an animal welfare advisory panel to monitor the changes and recommend further advancements.

The majority of KFCs in Canada are also offering a faux-chicken menu item in their restaurants.

The boycott will continue in other countries where KFC has restaurants, including the United States, until they adopt the same standards. If you're outside of Canada check out some more ways to step up the pressure and sign the petition here.

Thank you. It's so clear that your hard work is making a difference!

Street Teamers Mean Business! April 15, 2008

Posted by Marta at April 15, 2008 10:59 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

Nothing makes us happier than seeing Street Teamers out doing awesome things for animals. So you can only imagine how excited we were to have well over 100 Street Teamers come out to our 'Kentucky Fried Cruelty' protest in Toronto after peta2's Take Action conference recently. Check the video out for yourself below. I dare you not to smile when you see so many wonderful people protesting the way that KFC treats its chickens.

Okay, as if that isn't awesome enough, check out this Street Team report we received recently from 17-year-old Chelsea Lang in Chico, CA:

A man who worked at a local radio station (KZFR 90.1) talked about a KFC protest I had on the radio. Then about a week later he called me and asked if I would come down to the station and do an interview. So my friend and I went there and did an interview live on the air. We talked about all of the cruel ways the workers at warehouses treat the chickens and explained the standards PETA wants KFC to meet. We also talked about KFCcruelty.com and said to Boycott KFC!

Have you done something awesome to help animals recently? Tell us about it at StreetTeam@peta2.com!

KFC Supplier Exposed in New Undercover Video January 17, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at January 17, 2008 4:18 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

In two press conferences this afternoon, we announced the findings of two separate investigations into Tyson Foods facilities in Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to the cuts and broken limbs suffered by live chickens at these slaughterhouses, the investigator documented the following:

  • A worker pissed on a conveyor belt on which chickens are moved to be hung.
  • A supervisor told our undercover investigator that it was acceptable to rip the heads off live birds who had been improperly shackled.
  • A worker admitted that he broke a chicken's back by beating the bird against a rail.

Certainly, Tyson Foods should be ashamed and should take action to stop this abuse, but what about KFC? As always, Kentucky Fried Cruelty will probably try to avoid their part in these horrors. But, if you look at their own website, the company clearly states that, "as a major purchaser of food products, we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to influence the way animals supplied to us are treated. We take that responsibility very seriously..."

I'd love to see them spin their way out of this one. Tyson Foods is one of KFC's biggest suppliers, so why is KFC selling buckets of chickens' flesh from birds who may be coated with some dude's piss or who have had their heads ripped off while still alive? Doesn't seem like any standard of "responsibility" if you ask me! What do you think?

Please watch the video and contact both Tyson Foods and KFC by sending a letter today!

And be sure to spread the word to your friends and family.

P.S.- The Facebook Challenge is going great. We're at 100 donors right now, but need your help to reach our goal of 500. We could win the $50,000 grand prize and that's a lot of money that could help fund more investigations like this one. If you help us out right now we might even win the $1000 bonus for having the highest number of people who donate in a single day!
