Beat the Heat with Icy Treats! July 16, 2009

It's summertime and the livin' is ... really hot! It's the time of year for a nice trip to the beach, a dip in the pool and ... icy treats! Beat the heat this summer with some Liz's Outrageous Pop Sticks (LOPS)! They're easy to make, don't cost very much, and will make this heat wave bearable. Now, grab some friends and let's get to work!

First, drive over to your local supermarket (Target or a Wal-Mart will work too) or ask the 'rents to take you there.

Second, pick out an ice pop mold like the one you see below. If they don't carry these, don't sweat it—you can use any small container, including a small thermos or a small plastic cup and just add an ice pop stick or a spoon!

Third, look for ingredients. This can include anything from old-fashioned orange juice to powdered drink mix. I chose to use one of my favorite drinks and also created chocolate pops by mixing almond milk and chocolate syrup ... yum ... If you're buying drink mix, you'll probably only need one packet (don't forget that some require sugar, which you can add to taste!). If you're making chocolate pops, then don't forget a container of chocolate syrup and one container of non-dairy milk (you can use soy, rice, etc.).

Fourth, go home and mix everything together that needs mixing. For my chocolate pops, I mixed 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup for every 1 cup of almond milk. Powdered drink mixes usually only require sugar and water and there are directions on the back but feel free to cut the amount in half! I personally used less than half the bottle of my favorite drink and half of the drink mix.

Fifth, pour everything into the ice pop mold!

Sixth, put them in the freezer and keep them there overnight. In the morning, take them out of the freezer and voilĂ —homemade icy treats! You and your friends will be the envy of sweaty people everywhere.

Send us a picture of you and your LOPS to us at StreetTeam@peta2.com and we'll award 500 points to your Street Team account!

For the animals,
Liz

P.S. Remember that even though you've beat the heat, many dogs cannot and they can die from being overheated in locked cars—something to keep in mind this summer!
