After we received complaints that Dollar General, which has thousands of stores across the U.S., was selling hideously cruel glue traps, we wrote to the bargain retailer. In our letter, we described how animals who get stuck on glue traps can suffer for days before finally dying of starvation or dehydration. Many victims of glue traps rip their skin from their own faces and bodies as they try to escape, and some resort to chewing off their own limbs while trying to free themselves. We also let the company know that there are plenty of humane ways to deal with mice and rats.

Dollar General responded to our letter by announcing that it will stop selling glue traps. Just like that. The company reviewed the information we presented and simply made a compassionate decision. Isn't that awesome?!

Dollar General joins other large retailers, including Albertsons, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and Safeway, that have stopped selling glue traps after discussions with PETA.

Please thank the company for its decision—and then ask the home-improvement chain Lowe's to stop selling glue traps!

What's wrong with glue traps?

For the animals who end up stuck in them, glue traps mean having their skin pulled off, while tangling for hours trying to free themselves—sometimes chewing their own legs and feet off in a desperate attempt to get out. It means sometimes being picked up, while they're still stuck to the glue, and being thrown in the trash, to linger for hours or sometimes days, in pain.

Companies like Lowe's still continue to make money off of selling these torture devices to consumers, and until now, were selling misleadingly labeled glue traps designed to make people believe that glue traps were somehow acceptable. The label stated that the glue trap contained a naturally occurring anesthetic called eugenol, implying that animals caught in the trap did not suffer or feel pain. In reality, they do suffer and feel extreme pain. PETA filed a complaint about this misleading label, and we have recently heard back that Motomco—the company who makes the glue traps that Lowe's sells—has removed the label.

Since Motomco's glue traps are the only brand that Lowe's sells—and Lowe's claims that it only sells glue traps that are "humane" because of eugenol—we hope that the change in Motomco's packaging will be the final push that Lowe's needs to pull glue traps from its shelves. Because it can no longer hide behind Motomco's misrepresentations, we've written to the home improvement company asking it to immediately rid its stores of the cruelest mouse traps on the market today.

Cobra Starship and a Mouse September 3, 2009

There has been a hot mess making its way across the U.S. and luckily for me that hot mess was Cobra Starship, who stopped in DC for a show at the Rock and Roll Hotel. So the peta2 Street Team came out in full force talking with fans about the suffering of animals in labs for consumer products with the Animal Testing Breaks Hearts petition. It's crazy to think that millions of rats, mice, and rabbits this year will suffer in labs for lipstick, laundry detergent and other consumer products.

Ask American Eagle To Make The Compassionate Choice To Toss Glue Traps! June 1, 2009

PETA has learned that American Eagle is using glue traps to kill mice in stores nationwide. This is downright surprising, given American Eagle's groundbreaking and compassionate pledge to help eliminate the cruel treatment of Australian sheep used for wool by boycotting Australian wool in its products.

Like sheep, rodents feel panic and pain, and glue traps cause immeasurable suffering! Ensnared animals, in their desperation to free themselves from the sticky glue, will struggle mightily, tearing their skin, breaking their bones, and getting even more ensnared in the process. Panicked animals lose control of their bodily functions, increasing the risk of disease transmission to humans who handle the traps. Death is slow in coming—it takes up to 24 hours for some animals! And lethal methods are also ineffective—something that most pest-control companies will never tell clients. More animals will simply move in to fill the niche created when others are killed or removed.

Please politely ask American Eagle executives to extend their compassion to even the smallest of creatures—the mice who suffer and die in glue traps—by removing all glue traps from their stores and facilities immediately. Please remind them that PETA stands ready to help them develop a humane, effective rodent-control program.

Glue Traps At Target and Do It Best May 2, 2008

Many major companies (like CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Safeway) have stopped selling glue traps because of the suffering that they cause to animals. Sadly, other corporations insist on stocking glue traps despite repeated letters and phone calls from PETA staff trying to convince them otherwise. Now we need your help!

Tell Lowe's: Glue Traps Are Horrifying March 7, 2008

You know that company Lowe's? Well, I think it's shameful that they sell glue traps. You don't have to be a big time animal rights activist to know that it's cruel to kill animals with glue traps.

Glue traps are among the most cruel pest-control devices on the market today. Rats, mice, birds, and many other animals get stuck to them and suffer for days before they finally die of starvation, dehydration, self-mutilation, and shock. Patches of skin, fur, or feathers are torn from their bodies as they frantically struggle to escape the glue that starts coating their bodies.

Really, can you imagine how flat out horrifying it is for an animal caught in one of these traps?

But so far, not this, nor the fact that other companies—including CVS, Rite Aid, Albertsons, and Safeway—have banned glue traps has persuaded Lowe's to do the right thing and get rid of them once and for all.
