Sand Sculpture Demonstration? June 3, 2008

Posted by Marta at June 3, 2008 1:03 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

The demos that PETA's affiliates around the world come up with never cease to amaze me. Our friends at PETA India held a demonstration today to highlight the leather industry's factor in global warming. Check out a quote from this article about the demo:

'Leather-production facilities destroy nearby waterways and delicate eco-systems in the water resources,' PETA Campaign Manager N.G. Jayasimha told IANS.

'The energy consumed and pollution produced by the leather industry makes it a leading factor in global warming, which is endangering polar bears and their habitat,' he said.

And look at this absolutely amazing sand sculpture, designed by artist Sudarsan Patnaik in Puri City:

The leather industry is cruel and disgusting. And seriously, there are so many alternatives—just keep an eye out for labels that say things like "synthetic" or "man-made materials." Chances are high that you already own some faux-leather products, even if you didn't specifically seek them out.

I really can't believe that people wear someone else's chemically-processed skin on their feet (or any part of their bodies). The chemicals are necessary to keep the skin from, you know, decomposing and stuff. Sick. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Chemically-treated cow skin is not fashionable.

International Human Rights Day December 9, 2007

Posted by Pulin Modi at December 9, 2007 7:55 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

International Human Rights Day is Monday December 10th according to the United Nations. When I was in college I designed my own major to study the connections between all forms of exploitation so I'm glad I have your attention for a couple minutes.

To help observe this day, I hope you will check out some of the info below to learn about the connections between violence towards people and that inflicted upon billions of animals worldwide. Remember that no one wants to be victimized. No one deserves to suffer for others' greed. Everyone should be given an opportunity to enjoy life without oppressing others. It's pathetic that there are actually people who make a living off selling the products of misery. I don't know how they can wake up every morning and look in the mirror knowing their pockets are padded with blood money.

Study: vegan diets healthier for planet, people than meat diets from The University of Chicago

Blood, Sweat, and Fear: Workers' Rights in U.S. Meat and Poultry Plants from Human Rights Watch

Hungry world 'must eat less meat' from the BBC

Why vegans were right all along: Famine can only be avoided if the rich give up meat, fish and dairy from The Guardian

Of course, research has also shown that vegetarians are 50 percent less likely to develop heart disease, and they have 40 percent of the cancer rate of meat-eaters. Studies have actually shown that vegetarian kids grow taller and have higher IQs than their classmates, too! That's why stupid people are called "meat heads." You've never heard anyone insult someone's intelligence by calling them "veggie burger head," have you?! Ha!

The beauty of helping animals is that you're also helping yourself and your family and the environment (seriously, just ask the United Nations), too!

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.-Gandhi

Happy (early) International Human Rights Day to everyone! Special thanks to all the Street Team members for doing such a great job with everything.

Our Response to Gore's Nobel Prize Win October 12, 2007

Posted by Pulin Modi at October 12, 2007 1:42 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 4 ) | TrackBack

Congratulations to Former Vice President Al Gore and the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for sharing the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to spread awareness of the global warming crisis. Activists deserve recognition for helping make the world a better place! The award was announced just this morning, and we immediately sent a letter to Gore offering congratulations on his great accomplishment, but also asking him to do more.

Gore is Chairman of the Board for the Alliance for Climate Protection, where he will be donating half of the $1.5 million prize money. They have created a 7-point pledge that offers a list of steps people can take to help reduce their negative impact on the Earth. We would like for Gore and the Alliance to add an 8th point—to go vegetarian.

In case you haven't heard, going vegetarian is the best thing you can do for the environment. According to the U.N. itself (Gore's partner in winning the Peace Prize), raising animals for food generates almost 40 percent more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined. If you need more evidence about how eating animals destroys the planet, just click here.

We urge you to send a letter of your own to Gore, c/o the Alliance for Climate Protection, and ask him to add this essential 8th point to the pledge.

Please write to The Honorable Al Gore now!

Pulin

Chicken in a Hummer Follows Al Gore Around August 29, 2007

Posted by Marta at August 29, 2007 12:13 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

Seriously, what's the deal with Al Gore? He makes this hit documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth", focused entirely on global warming and how we can each do our part to stop it. Yet, when we inform him that eating animals is the #1 cause of global warming, he ignores all the facts. It's not like he couldn't stand to lose a few pounds anyways. Perhaps it's just too inconvenient of a truth for him?

That's why we're here to remind him. We'll be following Gore around the country, stopping at several environmental group headquarters along the way, with a giant Hummer driven by a person in a chicken costume. Across the side, it will proudly state that meat is the top cause of global warming. Not to mention, this amazing billboard will be going up shortly in cities across America. Getting the message yet, Al?

The New York Times heard about the whole situation and printed an amazing article in the paper today, basically confirming that if he really cared about the environment, he'd stop supporting the cruelest and most destructive industry on Earth.

If you haven't taken the Veg Pledge yet, trust me, there's no better time to give it a try.

-Ryan
