Free Stuff Friday: 'Meat Sucks' T-Shirt January 8, 2010

Posted by Tiffany Wright at January 8, 2010 9:26 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 547 ) | TrackBack

It's back!! The crazy popular 'Meat Sucks' t-shirt designed by Bring Me The Horizon frontman (and vegetarian) Oli Sykes. Many of you might remember that Oli's clothing label, Drop Dead Clothing, originally launched the t-shirt as a limited edition.

The design was so popular that peta2 is now selling an updated version with the peta2 logo, available exclusively on the PETA catalog. That means you can only get this t-shirt by ordering it from the catalog ... and by winning this week's contest, of course! By the way, it's available in two styles. For those of you who like a tight fit, go for the fitted t-shirt, and those of you who like a little breathing room, go for the standard t-shirt.

Both t-shirts also feature this sweet @ss design on the back:

For your chance to win a 'Meat Sucks' t-shirt, comment below with a veg-friendly slogan that you think would look cool on a t-shirt. Comments must be received by January 15. The 10 people with the most original comments will be chosen as our winners and notified on January 19.

Free Stuff Friday: 'Deadly Little Secret' and 'Deadly Little Lies' December 4, 2009

Posted by Tiffany Wright at December 4, 2009 9:21 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 80 ) | TrackBack

Are you a fan of mystery, romance, and suspense? Then be sure to enter this week's contest. Best-selling author Laurie Stolarz has just released the second book in her Touch series, Deadly Little Lies , and you have the chance to win it. Let me tell you, Bella and Edward ain't got nothing on Camelia and Ben. Okay, not saying anything else ... you'll have to find out for yourself.

Since it wouldn't be very nice to give you the second book without the first one, we're gonna go ahead and give away Deadly Little Secret too. We've got three sets up for grabs.

For your chance to win, comment below with a topic for Laurie Stolarz's next book. Comments must be received by December 11. The three people with the most original comments will be chosen as our winners and notified on December 14.

By the way, this would make an awesome gift for someone. Just sayin ... :)

I figure some of you are wondering what these books have to do with animal rights. Well, not only is Laurie Stolarz vegan, but the mom of the main character in the books is vegan too!

Learn more about Laurie and her books in our interview below ...

When and why did you go vegan?
I became a vegetarian about 15 years ago after studying in Paris. There was a meat market—a real one, not a singles club—behind the apartment where I lived, and the butchers would string up various animal parts as a way to entice customers to buy. I'd never seen meat/animals displayed this way before, and it was very eye-opening. When meat is all packaged up so neatly in the supermarket, it doesn't quite have the same effect—at least it didn't for me. I didn't really think about what I was eating. In some ways it's more honest to string the meat/animals up this way—so that people can see what they're really putting into their bodies. It wasn't until about 7 years ago that I cut all animal products out of my diet, including dairy and eggs.

What, to you, is the best part about being vegan?
I feel so much better about the food I put into my body. I feel healthier and have more energy. I also feel that my lifestyle is much better for the environment.

In all of your books, the main characters have been teenagers. What's the biggest thing to keep in mind when writing for a younger audience?
I think it's important to keep the situations as authentic and believable as possible ... because if it's not real, teens will be the first to call you on it.

So your latest book is called Deadly Little Lies. What's it about?
Deadly Little Lies is the second book in the Touch series and the sequel to Deadly Little Secret. I'm really excited about it, because I think it has even more suspense, romance, and twists than the first book.

Deadly Little Secret: Until three months ago, everything about sixteen-year-old Camelia's life had been fairly ordinary: decent grades; an okay relationship with her parents; and a pretty cool part-time job at an art studio downtown. But when Ben, the mysterious new guy, starts junior year at her high school, Camelia's life becomes far from ordinary.

Rumored to be somehow responsible for his ex-girlfriend's accidental death, Ben is immediately ostracized by everyone on campus. Except for Camelia. She's reluctant to believe he's trouble, even when her friends try to convince her otherwise. Instead she's inexplicably drawn to Ben ... and to his touch. But soon, Camelia is receiving eerie phone calls and strange packages with threatening notes. Ben insists she is in danger, and that he can help—but can he be trusted? She knows he's hiding something ... but he's not the only one with a secret. Watch the book trailer now.

Deadly Little Lies: Last fall, sixteen-year-old Camelia fell for Ben, a new boy at school who had a very mysterious gift—psychometry, the ability to sense the future through touch. But just as Camelia and Ben's romance began to heat up, he abruptly left town. Brokenhearted, Camelia has spent the last few months studying everything she can about psychometry and experiencing strange brushes with premonition. Camelia wonders if Ben's abilities have somehow been transferred to her.

Ben returns to school, but he remains aloof, and Camelia can't get close enough to share her secret with him. Camelia makes the painful decision to let him go and move on. Adam, the hot new guy at Knead, seems good for her in ways Ben wasn't. But when Camelia and Adam start dating, a surprising love triangle results. A chilling sequence of events uncovers secrets from Ben's past—and Adam's. Someone is lying, and it's up to Camelia to figure out who—before it's too late.

Why was it important to include a vegan character in your book?
Yes, Camelia's mom is a vegan, and favors raw rood dishes. I thought it was important to include a vegan character in the book to help promote nutrition and health awareness. I truly believe that this is the healthier lifestyle, and I wanted to bring it into my work. Camelia's mom makes some pretty funky recipes—at least they're considered funky to Camelia, i.e. raw-violi, rawkin' rawsagna, and fakin'-lettuce-and-tomato sandwiches—so her veganism way of life also adds a bit of humor to the book, which when coupled with some of the darker, more suspenseful themes in the novel, can add comic relief.

Since you're a writer and have such great taste in food, any chance of writing a cookbook?
I'd love to do that someday, especially since I love to eat. A really healthy, honest, and funny cookbook, with lots of personality, could be very fun indeed.

No worries, we'll be sure to have a contest for that too when it comes out :)
