WARNING: Graphic Pig Farm Video November 16, 2009

Posted by Ryan at November 16, 2009 4:46 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 13 ) | TrackBack

Brace yourselves, because this is a tough one ...

Here at PETA, we're used to undercover investigators documenting the gruesome final moments that animals face in slaughterhouses. Surely this suffering alone is reason enough not to want to eat them.

The latest undercover investigation from our friends in Mercy for Animals takes a look at the cruelty animals—in this case, pigs—suffer before their throats are slit. The investigator documented workers hurling baby pigs and slamming them into transport carts; picking piglets up by their ears and tails; cutting off the animals' tails with pliers, and ripping off their testicles with bare hands and without painkillers (the sound of screaming piglets in the video made my skin crawl). Their squealing mothers are shown scrambling to escape workers who slam spiked mallets into the animals' sides.

This is a brutal video to watch, but I ask that you witness for yourself what happens behind the scenes—because these animals need your voices more than ever.

Once you've watched the video, please take the time to comment with the one word that you would use to describe what you saw.

I'm going to go with "despicable."

"Cut Out Dissection" Action of the Week: Update Your Status! October 19, 2009

Posted by Marta at October 19, 2009 10:53 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

By now, you're all well-aware that it's "Cut Out Dissection" month (at least, I hope you are!). First we had you hand out leaflets (1,000 Street Team points), then we had you share "Classroom Cut-Ups" (1,000 Street Team points). What's next?

We want you to update your Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace with why you choose not to dissect. Here are just a few examples:

  • I choose not to dissect because there are so many humane alternatives available these days!
  • Six million animals are killed and processed by biological supply companies each year, so I choose not to dissect to save lives.
  • I choose not to dissect because I care about animals and because studies have shown that students who use alternatives to dissection perform just as well (if not better) than those who cut up animals.
So whatever your reason is, be sure to let all of your friends know by updating your status (and don't forget to include this link so people can get more info!). Then all you gotta do is take a screen grab of your status update and send it to us at StreetTeam@peta2.com for 1,000 Street Team points.

Easy, right?

Marta

P.S. Be sure to log into your SocialVibe account and get active to support this month's "Cut Out Dissection" goal! Don't have a SocialVibe account yet? Sign up now to start helping raise funds for peta2 without spending a dime!

'Cut Out Dissection' Action of the Week: Share 'Classroom Cut-Ups' October 12, 2009

Posted by Rachel-O at October 12, 2009 12:16 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

So it's week two of 'Cut Out Dissection' month, and we're giving you two new ways to share 'Classroom Cut-Ups' online!

We all know how powerful videos can be, and there's no denying that they can change someone's life. How many of you guys went vegan, stopped buying leather, or stopped supporting the circus, because of a video you saw?

This week, we want you to help gain support for your campaign against dissection at your school, by showing everyone you know just how those corpses get to the classroom. We've just uploaded 'Classroom Cut-Ups', our investigation into a biological supply firm—where you can see cats being pumped fully of formaldehyde while they were still alive—onto YouTube, to make it easier for you to share.

We're also giving you this share linkto share the page with all of your friends on Facebook!

E-mail us at StreetTeam@peta2.com with a screenshot of your Facebook update, or the page you streamed the YouTube video on, and we'll give you 1,000 Street Team points!

Stay loud!
-Rachel

One Minute Mission: Why Do You Love peta2? September 21, 2009

Posted by Rachel-O at September 21, 2009 4:08 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 118 ) | TrackBack

Why do you love peta2? It could be Hug a Vegetarian Day, Nugget, seeing us on Warped Tour, or because Meet Your Meat changed your life. It could also be just because our stickers are so effing adorable—we know, that's probably it!

Anyway, if you're on Facebook, you might've noticed the new tagging feature for your status updates and you probably know what we're thinking—another easy way to let all of your friends know about peta2 and animal rights!

Your new peta2 Minute Mission is to tag peta2 in your Facebook status and let everyone know why you love peta2! Obviously, you want to work some animal rights magic into this by sharing a Hug a Vegetarian Day link if that's your reason, or giving your friends a bit of information about animals that they may not know. For example: I <3 @peta2.com because my body is not a graveyard!

Remember, when typing your status update, make sure to type the "@" symbol, and a box will pop up for you to find peta2.com in—it's easy, quick, and will get your friends talking about animal rights. Copy and paste your status update and send it to us at StreetTeam@peta2.com and we'll give you 500 points just for tagging peta2!

Stay loud!
-Rachel

Add Our Staff On Facebook! August 17, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi at August 17, 2009 9:12 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

Chances are that you're on Facebook and already a fan of peta2. But I wanted you to know that lots of our staff is on there, too! We e-mail with you, answer your letters and phone calls, come up with those cool leaflets, and otherwise try to support everything you do to make a difference in the lives of animals!

Here are some people I thought you might want to friend on Facebook! We're a friendly bunch, so go crazy with the adds and get to know us!

Jackie is our Assistant Street Team Coordinator. If you have questions about school projects, need free leaflets or stickers, or want advice on dealing with less than supportive teachers or parents, she can hook you up! She loves reading your e-mails and posts on the message boards, too.

Rachel (it's pronounced Rachelle) is the Street Team Coordinator. She helps find the amazing Street Teamers and volunteers we get for things like Warped Tour. She also helps people like you get more active at school with campaigns to get veg options or alternatives to dissection. Rachel is passionate about helping you make your voice heard against companies who exploit animals and has lots of experience working with abused and neglected animals, doing animal rights protests, tabling for peta2, being vegetarian, and going vegan!

Ryan, our College Campaign Coordinator, is the man to go to if you're in college and really want to shake things up on your campus. He'll be visiting schools across the country throughout the year, and he's got tons of experience working with students on campus campaigns.

Regina lives in Washington, DC, so if you are in the area, add her! She's our DC Youth Outreach Coordinator and wants to meet up to organize some fun stuff at your school! She'll help you with any student campaigns, outreach at concerts and festivals, and can give you pointers on the best places to eat around town.

Marta has been around peta2 forever! She's the Senior Street Team Coordinator, co-author of PETA's Vegan College Cookbook, and an all around pleasant person who cares about animals as much as she does Scrubs.

Then there's me, Pulin. I'm the Manager of Youth Campaigns. I just try to keep things running smoothly and probably can't help you any more than the other lovely staffers, but I most likely have the most immature sense of humor out of anyone. So if you want to send me jokes, that would be awesome.

So are you friends with any or all of us yet? What's stopping you? To learn more about our entire staff, check this out.

Dillinger Escape Plan Bass Guitar Giveaway March 15, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi at March 15, 2009 6:55 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 48 ) | TrackBack

The Dillinger Escape Plan is one of the most talented bands on the planet, and we love working with them. They're an inspiration to amateur musicians while also impressing the heck out of some of the biggest professionals in the world including Metallica and Nine Inch Nails!

When Dillinger's vegan bass player, Liam, came to us with a contest idea, I just could not refuse. I mean, who could say 'no' to a FREE AUTOGRAPHED BASS GUITAR from The Dillinger Escape Plan?! For you, winning could be as easy as Meat's. Not. Green. There will be 10 runners up who get free guitar picks, too!

Liam's photo courtesy of NathanielShannon.com

How do you enter to win? Easy!

1) Upload this Meat's Not Green image to your MySpace or Facebook album (or whatever you use to share photos with your friends).

2) Email StreetTeam@peta2.com with a screen shot of the uploaded Meat's Not Green image along with a link to your page. Please include your name, phone number, and mailing address, as well. We will probably check in with you to confirm that this is really up, so make sure it's easy to find! We'll give everyone on the peta2 Street Team 1,000 points just for entering, too!

3) Wait for us to announce the winners! To help pass the time, check out our Meat's Not Green campaign and learn more about helping animals and the environment. For example, did you know that there are more greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock industry than all the planes, trucks, cars, and boats in the world combined? Yea, that's according to the United Nations!

So details for the prize ... One grand prize winner will receive an autographed black G&L L-2000 bass guitar. The bass has a rosewood fingerboard and according to Liam, "this thing is badass." If it could survive even a night on stage with Dillinger (and it has), you know this is a pretty phenomenal prize! And we're also giving away some limited edition Dillinger Escape Plan / peta2 guitar picks to ten runners-up.

The contest ends April 19, and winners will be notified by April 22 (that's Earth Day, by the way). By entering, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions and our privacy policy.

Good luck!
