Anti-Flag's "Meat's Not Green" Ad and Contest! June 9, 2009
Posted by Shannon Phillips at June 9, 2009 11:25 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 191 ) | TrackBack"You've gotta die, gotta die, gotta die for your government?" These words came blaring out of my friend's speakers like nothing I had ever heard before. It was loud, it was punk, it was in your face, and I really liked it. Over a decade later, and Anti-Flag is still at it—churning out political punk rock with new twists, album after album.
Not only has Anti-Flag stayed true to their punk sound over the years, but they've also been active in speaking up for animals since the beginning. After multiple interviews with peta2, allowing us to go on tour with them, and posing in a pro-vegetarian ad, the band is back in a new ad with the tagline "Meat Destroys The Environment" to assist with our ongoing Meat's Not Green campaign. Check it out below ...
Today is a great day. Not only did I get to show you our new Anti-Flag ad, but I get to tell you that the band's new album, The People or the Gun hits stores today, and trust me when I tell you that it's no less than awesome!
Itching to get your hands on a copy of The People or the Gun? Just leave us a comment! Really, it's just that easy. Just comment and let us know your favorite Anti-Flag show memory, your favorite song, what you're looking forward to most on Warped Tour—anything! Five winners will be chosen at random to receive a CD. Entries must be received by June 23 and winners will be notified by July 1.

Written by Melissa Galianos of Concordia University in Montreal, QC
When my friend Lucas and I were offered to table for peta2 at the University of Ottawa, we knew we couldn’t refuse! The event was an eco-fair, so of course we discussed the issue of global warming and what can be done about this crisis. Since it’s been well-documented that going vegetarian is better for the environment than switching to a hybrid car, it was a natural fit!

The event was part of the University of Ottawa's "Green Week"! Our booth attracted lots of attention to not only the plight of animals, but on the green benefits of a vegan diet on the planet. We also handed out Tofurky, vegan cheese and "egg" salad sandwiches to hungry students while informing them about the impact of a meat-based diet. Everyone loves free food!

Stunned students watched PETA's "Meet Your Meat" in horror as they learned about the horror behind factory farming! Many students were happy to take action and sign our "Fight Global Warming With Your Fork" petition, which was a huge success!

All in all, it was a great day of raising awareness and eating awesome vegan food!
Meet Sam. He's From New Zealand. December 26, 2008
Posted by Pulin Modi at December 26, 2008 8:35 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 4 ) | TrackBackTo most people reading this, New Zealand seems like some distant, magical land. But there are a lot of things we have in common with the fine folks of New Zealand including a passion for protecting animals and the planet.

That's where Sam comes in. He's a 13 year old with a love for Rise Against, Anti-Flag, and a bunch of other bands, and he has his own radio show called Food For Thought!
He talks about animal rights, shares vegan recipes, and has a policy to only play bands which he knows are animal-friendly (they must have at least one vegetarian member).
When I asked him how he got the idea to do a radio show all about animal rights, he said "...(b)efore I went vegan I was co-hosting a music show with one of my friends. Part way through co-hosting this show I went vegetarian. I wanted to help animals as much as possible, so I decided to start a radio show dedicated to animal rights. I interviewed a lot of vegans on my show, and after learning that cows still have to die to produce milk, I went vegan." Oh I love logical thinking!
Sam's dedication to veganism is admirable. I totally agree with him when he says that the "most important thing anyone could do to help animals is to go vegan. By going vegan, you can save 100 animals per year, or 101 if you include yourself. As well as this, going vegan helps the environment more than buying a hybrid car. If people are already vegan and want to make an even bigger difference, then they should join the Street Team. There is an extremely helpful list of ways that you can make a difference on the all actions page."
Wow! I couldn't have said it better myself.
Check out Food For Thought's page or Bebo profile for more info on all the great work Sam is doing to help animals!

I have four and a half words for you: Vegan pirates saving whales yarr!
Yes, for too long it's been generally assumed that pirates do nothing more than seek out doubloons and say hilarious phrases like "shiver me timbers!" and "a-yo-ho-ho".
The good people of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are changing all of that though. These people are the real deal, and using nonviolent methods of direct action, they have been fighting to defend the rights of sea animals for over 30 years.

Now, the friendly folks of Animal Planet will be highlighting the group's efforts in exciting detail as part of a new program called "Whale Wars", which starts tonight at 9pm (EST)!
To give you an example of the kind of remarkable work the group has done (and continues to do), check out this sweet trailer:
Make sure to tune in tonight, mateys!

Meat's Not Green Video October 1, 2008
Posted by Pulin Modi at October 1, 2008 7:57 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBackHave you seen the new Meat's Not Green site?
There is plenty of evidence out there to back up what we're saying about the connection between saving the planet and helping animals including this recent article which talks about how, "(g)oing vegan—giving up meat and dairy products—would cut the emissions released in making what you eat more than seven-fold..." Pretty powerful stuff!
Meat's Not Green is such an incredible campaign, and one of my favorite parts of it is the video that talks about how the meat industry causes so much destruction to the planet.
It's informative and pretty short, so check it out.
Find out why "Meat's Not Green"!
If you post the video on your own page and send us a link to StreetTeam@peta2.com, we'll drop 500 points into your Street Team account towards free hoodies, shirts, stickers, and other merch. Since you are sitting at your computer right now, why not just go ahead and do it? Grab the code to repost or download it right here.
Thanks!

MEAT'S NOT GREEN!! August 29, 2008
Posted by Ryan at August 29, 2008 12:08 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 12 ) | TrackBackOh boy, have I got a fun update for you today...
That's right, we're hitting the ground running this fall by launching our exciting new campaign, called "Meat's Not Green"!

All of the politicians and people on TV talk about "going green", but are you as tired as we are of so-called "environmentalists" who say they care about protecting the planet while they chomp on pieces of animals' flesh? Did they not hear that meat is the #1 cause of global warming? Well, it's time to clear things up for them!
Click here to sign our petition to add a warning label to meat packaging, so that people know that when they are buying meat, they are not only contributing to the torture of animals, but the destruction of the environment too!
After signing the petition, make sure to create your own fun label! And there are all kinds of other fun things on the site too, such as as a calculator to find out how green your diet is and a badge for posting on your MySpace or Facebook, so go wild!
Pretty awesome, right? Mine's going to say "Warning: Meat is murder for animals and the planet!"
So what is your warning label going to say?

Are You a Meat-Guzzler? January 28, 2008
Posted by Marta at January 28, 2008 4:32 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBackBig shocker—raising animals for food is terrible for many reasons, but if you haven't been keeping up with the news, did you know that going vegetarian does more for the environment than switching to a hybrid car? It's true.
I grew up in California, and when I was younger, I would drive from San Jose to LA with my family several times a year. We would pass a gigantic feed lot on the 5 that always seemed to stretch on forever—as far as the eye could see. And before you could even see the lot (and long after you passed it), you couldn't escape the smell. I felt like the horrendous stench (methane) was being burned into my nostrils and it would give me a headache each time we passed by.
I can't even imagine actually being stuck there, like so many cows are—and you also don't have to be a genius to know that something that smells that strong and that bad cannot be good for the environment. Take a look at this article ("Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler") from The New York Times—you can see the feed lot for yourself.
The article is awesome, so be sure to read the whole thing. Here's a little quote:
If price spikes don't change eating habits, perhaps the combination of deforestation, pollution, climate change, starvation, heart disease and animal cruelty will gradually encourage the simple daily act of eating more plants and fewer animals.
Mr. Rosegrant of the food policy research institute says he foresees "a stronger public relations campaign in the reduction of meat consumption—one like that around cigarettes—emphasizing personal health, compassion for animals, and doing good for the poor and the planet."
Raising animals for food is bad for the environment, plain and simple. Stop eating meat and you'll help the environment. It's win, win, people.
And in other newspaper, uh, news...did anyone see the USA Today article about how the animal rights movement is goin' strong? Check it out. And FYI, those are my girls rocking the Mars Candy Kills demonstration in the top photo in the article—amazing, right?
♥ Marta

environment Power Shift environmentalist
It's cool. There's no shame in being an environmentalist these days. In fact, this past weekend was the largest student environmentalist conference in history, called Power Shift! Of course, as Mother Earth will tell you, it doesn't make a lick of sense to be a meat-eater and claim to care about the planet, since the meat industry is the #1 cause of global warming.
That's why peta2 was there! To remind people that by eating meat, they might as well be driving a big yellow Hummer around town 3 times a day. And nobody likes Hummers.

Of course, what kind of party would it be if our "I Am Not a Nugget" chick wasn't there?

So all in all, it was a great time. Thousands of people learned why they should go veg, and I'm sure at least a couple planets were saved. Al Gore would be so proud.
