Ramen: The Vegan College Superfood August 25, 2009

Ahh, ramen. The mere mention of the word turns heads from Hawaii Pacific University to Florida State.
With classes tragically starting up again, students nationwide are stocking up on bulk orders of America's favorite 11-cent microwaveable noodles.
The key to a successful ramen dish is all in the preparation. Here are some important factors to consider:
- Make sure to get vegan ramen noodles! Watch out for the notorious Maruchan brand (now with extra chicken fat). Stick with Nissin Top Ramen Oriental Flavor for maximum deliciousness.
- Think outside of the box (or bag, as the case may be). Ramen can be used in far more extravagant dishes, including Ancient Japanese Noodle Secret Salad, Rent's Due "Cheezy" Ramen, and Freshasaurus Mex Ramen Casserole (all highlighted in PETA's Vegan College Cookbook).
- Take pictures! By posting your creations on Facebook, you can show your friends that being vegan is not only cheap and easy, but delicious too (this is called "snacktivism").
Bon appetit!

vegetarian Cooking recipes activism washington DC
As you fortunate folks in our nation's capital may have heard, there's a new force in town. That's right—peta2 now has an activist coordinator in Washington DC!
Her name is Regina. You may remember her as the former Florida Gulf Coast University student who worked with her animal rights group to keep KFC off of their campus. Well, after years of shaking things up down south, she's joined the peta2 team in DC to help turn the town upside down!
To celebrate, we organized a "peta2 Cook-Off Kick-Off" with local activists and supporters at our new DC office. The main highlight of the event was when Regina demonstrated how fun and easy it is to cook delicious dishes from PETA's Vegan College Cookbook!
Everybody dined on tasty Mexi-Cram Dip, Silence of the Lambs Shepherd's Pie, and No-Bake Chocolate Cake. Chocolate cake from the microwave?! Whaaaaat? Check out the pictures from the event below!

Happy Vegan Passover! April 9, 2009
Posted by Rachel-O at April 9, 2009 1:54 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBackSome of us in peta2 are kind of (completely) obsessed with vegan Passover recipes. If your family celebrates Passover, there's not a better way to explain why the universal story of dignity, hope, and freedom should apply to all beings—including animals—than by celebrating compassion with delicious vegan food!

A vegan Seder plate, and stuffed Zucchini.
If you're clueless in the kitchen like me, no fear! Check out VegCooking's guide to a vegan Passover here! My favorite is the eggplant casserole!
Eggplant Casserole
Source: No Cholesterol Passover Recipes by Debra Wasserman and Charles Stahler provided by Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG.org)
1 large onion, chopped
3 Tbsp. oil
1 medium eggplant, peeled and cubed
1/4 cup diced green pepper
11 oz. tomato-mushroom sauce
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 large tomatoes, diced
1 1/2 cups matzo farfel
- Saute the onions in oil until tender. Combine onions, eggplant, green pepper, tomato-mushroom sauce, and seasoning. Cook, covered, for 15 minutes or until eggplant is tender. Stir in tomatoes. In a 2-quart baking dish, arrange in alternate layers the vegetables and matzo farfel. Begin and end with the vegetables.
- Bake at 350 °F (uncovered) for 25 minutes.
You can truly prove to your family that there's a vegan alternative to anything! There's even a vegan gefilte-fish recipe!
Happy Passover!
Vegan Tailgating for Dummies! September 3, 2008
Posted by Ryan at September 3, 2008 4:28 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBackTailgating: It's a tradition as old as sitting in the back of a truck 4 hours before kickoff.
Whether you're just hanging out with friends before the big game, or getting to the Rise Against show super-early to catch a glimpse of those oh-so-cool peta2 staffers setting up their booth, there's never been a better time to show people just how delicious and fun vegan BBQ's can be!

Typical tailgaters (compliments of Flickr/Creative Commons)
So what do you need to tailgate vegan style? Here are some must-have items:
- A solid grill (or an engine to cook on, if you're hardcore)
- Some BBQ-friendly mock meats (think Tofurky sausages, Gardenburger riblets, faux chicken sandwiches, etc.)
- Liquid Smoke! This single ingredient could make or break your BBQ, so don't forget it!
- A cooler full of your favorite drinks (for me, that means vegan root beer floats!)
- The new vegan Doritos!
- Friends (hey, that's what message boards are for!)
Go local sports team go!

Posted by Ryan at July 17, 2008 7:54 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBackWouldn't that be a grrrr-eat way to start off the day? Well, if you go to last year's winner of our "Most Vegetarian-Friendly Colleges" contest, Northwestern University, that dream could be a reality!

It's not just Northwestern that's adding amazing vegetarian and vegan options though; it's a nationwide trend! Students are using the free and easy materials from our "Veganize Your Cafeteria" campaign pack to add AMAZING dishes to the menu!
So what we want to know is, how are the options at your school? Do you go to a school like the University of California - Berkeley, which offers Southwest tofu breakfast scramble, and vegan "chicken" nuggets? Does your school at least offer veggieburgers? Comment below to let us know. Make sure to mention your school name, and as many specific dishes as possible!

Posted by Ryan at May 27, 2008 2:05 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 84 ) | TrackBackI love Ellen, and I'm not ashamed to say so. She's just so gosh-darned spunky, isn't she?
That's why we were all so thrilled to see that she hosted Skinny Bitch authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin on the show last Friday, talking all about the benefits of a vegan diet!
Thankfully, peta2 is always ahead of the trends. That's why we hosted a peta2 event at the University of California - Los Angeles a few weeks ago, featuring Rory herself! The event was standing-room-only, and she even took the time to record this fun interview for all you blog-readers!
Pretty awesome, eh??
In fact, it's gotten me so excited about vegan food, I think it's time to give away a copy of the best-selling Skinny Bitch in the Kitch cookbook to one of you lucky readers!

To win it, we'll play a game! I'm thinking of MY FAVORITE vegan snack food on Earth. It can be found in every major grocery store, is on our Accidentally Vegan list, and is deeeeelish! If you are the first to guess it by commenting below, you'll win a free copy of the book!

Free Stuff Friday: Vegan Marshmallow Maker! May 9, 2008
Posted by Ashleigh at May 9, 2008 8:52 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 213 ) | TrackBackI was at a bonfire the other day and I was thinking about how I much I missed roasting marshmallows. Most marshmallows contain gelatin (aka - crushed up animal bones), which is disgusting!
Then I came to work and found out that we have a vegan marshmallow making kit to give away! I know there are others like me out there who are jonesing for some summertime marshmallow roasting action, and today is your lucky day!

Amy, who writes PETA's VegCooking Blog, tested the kit out and gave it rave reviews. She says the instructions are pretty simple, but you do need some special tools, namely a candy thermometer and a standing mixer. Check out the chocolate-marshmallow sandwich she made:

Want to make your own? One lucky person with a sweet tooth will win this kit from Angel Foods. Comment below with what you will do with the vegan marshmallows if you win!
This contest ends May 23, 2008 and the winner will be chosen and notified by May 30, 2008.

Vegan Bento vote Cooking Cutest Food
You've all been in awe of Asia's bento boxes, and we're now down to the toughest choice yet! Each of these three amazing meals has been voted your favorite in a previous week's blog, but it's time to pick your overall favorite.
Which will it be? Bear? Penguins? Sheep?
It's clear that you all really do side with the animals every time, but your votes will choose the winner. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty torn on which one to pick!

Vote now and help crown your favorite as the best ever!
Oh and for those of you wondering why anyone would choose to make all vegan meals, check out peta2.com and get active with the Street Team.
Round 3: Vote For The Cutest Food August 23, 2007
Posted by Pulin Modi at August 23, 2007 11:19 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBackOk this is the third and final round we're doing of these 'Cutest Food' blogs. The winner from this one will face off with the first round winner, teddy bear, and the second round winner, penguin, to see which is the overall best bento box. Look for that blog to be posted sometime next week.
For now, however, check out these new vegan creations from the talented Asia, and comment back to vote for your favorite!

I mean, I'm a bit biased towards 'PETA,' but who can really compare the world's largest animal rights organization to a cute sheep or the fun-filled sport of bowling?! It's all so different— so overwhelming— so incredible!
Vote now. Comment and let's hear what you have to say.
