30 Days - Did You Watch It? June 18, 2008

Did you watch the "Animal Rights" episode of 30 Days last night? If so, I told you! Wasn't it amazing? Sugar!

If you didn't watch, I disown you. No, not really, but I will if you don't catch the rerun!

Want to know what George (the hunter) had to say about the show? Look below!

When you were first selected to participate in this show, what did you expect the experience to be like?

I was pretty scared. I expected to be surrounded by people that just wanted to argue for a whole month. I'm not afraid of an argument, but I thought the numbers were stacked against me. All I was told was that I would be totally immersed in the animal rights movement. As far as the people I would meet, I expected a lot of angry people that yelled a lot. I figured girls and guys alike would be hairy-legged sandal-wearing hippies. For the most part, I was mistaken.

How did your opinion of animal rights activists change after your 30 days with the Karpels?

I realized almost immediately that animal rights activists, PETA members specifically, were very normal folks. That being said, there are some out there, just as with the factory farms, that give everyone involved a bad name. I learned about several examples of the abuse, neglect, and suffering that occur in factory farming. It's not a pretty industry, and if people were able to experience what I did, you might see a major change.

Are there any animal rights issues that are particularly important to you now that you hadn't thought about before staying with Melissa and her family?

I am aware that there need to be changes in factory farming, but aside from veganism, I haven't heard about a practical alternative. I personally prefer to buy my meat and produce from grocers that support the smaller local farms. The Burberry demonstration was hard-hitting, but we don't have very many fur coats in North Carolina. The one subject that I find the most offensive is vivisection. I can't give away anything about the show, but I had no idea how unnecessary it was. Tissue samples are infinitely more effective. For the sake of money, it seems people are abusing animals just because they can. They should be ashamed of themselves and pray that they never have to answer for their actions.

What are your views on the tactics that PETA uses to draw attention to the suffering of animals?

One area where I think PETA could use some P.R. work is separating themselves from some of the other animal rights groups out there. The term most people relate to animal rights is PETA. Anything that happens for the sake of animals, regardless of how offensive it is, gets hung on the neck of PETA. Consequently, most people think PETA people are nuts. I believe PETA does it the right way: education. They keep it fun and provide people with information.

Thanks George!

Bloody Burberry: The Fur Fighters (Video Game) March 26, 2008

Check out this new game to help build some more support for the campaign to get fur out of Burberry stores.

I haven't had this much fun since Super Chick Sisters.

In Bloody Burberry: The Fur Fighters, you get to play as a fox, rabbit, or raccoon, and participate in cool anti-fur actions including spray painting fur coats, disrupting a fur-filled fashion show, and freeing animals from cages! Those things in reality are illegal, so you shouldn't do them. But, you can do them all you want in this game and then be inspired to go out and make a difference on the peta2 Street Team.

How did you do? Comment back and let me know! I beat the game on the first try (probably because I hate Burberry so much, otherwise I'm pretty horrible at video games... got my butt whooped in Super Smash Brothers last night).

Taste of Chaos and Silverstein UK Tours November 27, 2007

Posted by Marta at November 27, 2007 2:11 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

Here's a special guest blog from Martin with peta2 UK!

I'm out on the road at the moment and I thought I would drop by and let you guys know how it's going tabling against Burberry. We are getting a great response at all the shows and I would like to say hi to all the people I have met over the past few days and a big thank you to all the Street Teamers who have helped me so far.

I got to try vegan haggis, neeps and tatties (to all you non-Scottish people, that's haggis, turnips and potatoes) in Glasgow and I have to say that I am completely sold on it. Yeah I know it sounds nasty, but if you ever get the chance, make sure you try it.

If any of you are out for any of the coming UK Silverstein dates make sure you pop by the stall and say hey.

Peace

Martin

PS - Oh one more thing: Make sure you check out this mission—The Anti-KFC Bulletin Bonanza.

bebe Stops Buying Fur but Keeps Selling It November 13, 2007

Posted by Marta at November 13, 2007 9:13 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 71 ) | TrackBack

We're happy to announce that after more than a year of education and negotiation with PETA (and e-mails from many of you), bebe has stopped buying fur! It's definitely a step in the right direction, since no more animals will be killed for their fur for bebe's clothing, but by continuing to sell items made of fur, bebe is sending its shoppers the message that it's okay to wear an animal's fur. Rabbits killed for their fur sometimes have their necks broken or have their skulls smashed before being strung up by their legs to slit their throats. Gruesome, isn't it?

Clothing retailers J.Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Wet Seal (who also happen to be some of bebe's top competitors) all pulled fur from their shelves upon pledging to go fur-free, but bebe is still selling fur.

Please don't shop at bebe this holiday season. Let's send the company a message that while it's great that they've pledged to go fur-free, we will only spend our hard-earned dollars at companies that are completely fur-free.

Itchin' to help more animals killed for their fur? Write the CEO of Burberry, Angela Ahrendts, urging her to remove fur from Burberry's collections permanently.

Oh, and if you haven't yet, be sure to order your "I'm an asshole; I wear fur stickers." 'Nuff said.

Thanks so much for sticking up for those without a voice—we appreciate it a lot, but the animals appreciate it even more.

Marta
