Use Twitter to Help Animals! November 9, 2009

Posted by Tiffany Wright at November 9, 2009 6:05 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

If you don't have a Twitter account, knock knock ... it's the 21st century! Oprah's on Twitter. Anyway, for everyone who's already on Twitter (and those of you now rushing to sign up), check out how you can tweet your way to saving tons of animals this winter:

Step 1: Burberry may be best known for its famous plaid frocks, but the company's use of fur is a great big faux pas.

How to Help: Post this twitition (that's right, I Twitter-fied it!) from your Twitter account:

@Burberry Stop supporting cruelty 2 animals & adopt a permanent fur-free policy NOW!

Step 2: More than half of the finished fur garments imported into the U.S. come from China. Animals who live on Chinese fur farms spend their entire lives in intensive confinement, only to be pulled from their cages, thrown to the ground, bludgeoned, beaten, and skinned alive.

How to Help: I'm sure by now you've probably seen our shocking undercover video from a Chinese fur farm. Please tell your followers about the horrors of the fur trade by posting the video on your Twitter page: http://bit.ly/2sHYSI

Step 3: Animals on fur farms around the world are often driven to cannibalism because of the extreme stress and frustration caused by constant confinement.

How to Help: Because a picture speaks a thousand words, click here to retweet this Twitpic!

Step 4: By signing our fur-free pledge, you'll be sending a powerful message ("Hell no, we want faux!") not only to the fur industry but also to designers, retailers, and others who directly profit from the suffering caused by this cruel industry.

How to Help: Pledge to go fur-free and ask your Twitter followers to do the same: http://bit.ly/hgsBC

Step 5: Each year, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of seals. Baby seals—some of them only weeks old—have their skulls smashed in or are shot for their fur. If you haven't checked out our awesome "Save the Seals" celebrity ad series, take a peek: http://bit.ly/1Ejvn8

How to Help: Vote for your favorite "Save the Seals" celebrity using our twitter poll and ask your followers to vote too. Who will you vote for:

@Cserratos
@BrodyJenner
@Jayde_Nicole
@MissKellyo
@Perez

So, tweeps, you gonna help the millions of animals who need you? Pretty please, we'll ♥ you faux-ever?

Go and Intern at PETA Europe! April 10, 2009

Posted by Marta at April 10, 2009 11:13 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

Sarah from peta2 UK wanted to tell you about PETA Europe's brand-new internship program, since Matt just told you about our intern program over here in the states earlier this week. Take it away, Sar ...
- Marta

Before joining PETA Europe almost a year ago I was an intern over at PETA US where I got to work alongside all the peta2 people. Interning was such a rewarding experience, knowing that everyday I was helping the plight of animals with every action I did. This is me with my fellow interns when I was in the US.

Now you can come and help spread the word about animal rights here in London at PETA Europe! As an intern you'll be helping with grassroots outreach activities—including stunts, demonstrations and tabling events. Woweee! Interns also do office work, prepare mailings, write letters and work on special projects. You can read more about the internship duties here.

To apply, download PETA Europe's intern applicant form. Need to know more? All you need to know is listed on the FAQ section!

Check out some recent demo photos from here in London that some of our volunteers got to help out with:

Hope to see some of you soon!

Burberry: Lay Off the Animals, Not the Workers January 23, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi at January 23, 2009 7:57 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

Sarah over in peta2 UK has a guest blog for you since she just did a demonstration outside of Burberry
-Pulin

Burberry may be best known for its chavy check design, but for you and me they're best known for their continued use of fur in their designs.

Despite being shown shocking video footage of animals on fur farms who are beaten, drowned and killed by anal electrocution, Burberry continues to sell fur.

This week Burberry announced 540 job cuts—290 of those in the UK and the other 250 in Spain. So that's where PETA Europe decided to get Burberry's attention with a "Lay off the animals, not the workers!" protest!

I got to hand out a ton of leaflets to passers-by, and even people in fur trim took one! I'm sure they'll think twice before putting that coat on again.

Pledge to be fur-free!

Burberry: Stop Passing Off Dead Animals As Clothes! November 14, 2008

Posted by Rachel-O at November 14, 2008 5:01 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 14 ) | TrackBack

I love Sarah from peta2 UK! Last summer, we interned together and were pretty much inseparable, so it's no surprise to me that she is full of great ideas—including some ways to educate people about Burberry selling fur, and all the horrible ways animals are abused for the fur industry. Take it, Sarah!
-Rachel

If you haven't already seen the new peta2 feature on Burberry, then I can only assume you've been living under a rock! With a host of awesome bands, all completely fed up with Burberry's abuse of furry animals, Super Furry Animals (great name eh?!), Jamie T, The Rakes, Los Campesinos, Friendly Fires and The Wombats, have all joined the campaign against Burberry by signing peta2's petition urging Burberry to ditch fur from their collection.

It's like Christmas has come early for us here at peta2 UK with all these amazing bands showing their support and compassion for our furry friends! These guys know that animals on fur farms are beaten, drowned, and are killed by poisoning, anal electrocution, and gassing. These cruel methods are ineffective, and animals often wake up while they're being skinned. Check out the full list of bands who've signed:

P.S Who's your favourite band who's signed? I'm keeping it true to my homeland; Wales, and am giving my vote to the Super Furry Animals.

See? Isn't she lovely? But wait, What..? You haven't signed the petition already?! Do it now and tell your friends!!

Also, use one of the banners below, that I made, on your MySpace
or Bebo page and we'll gladly award you with 200 points!

We will also give you 500 points for joining the Boycott Burberry Cause on Facebook! Let us know what you did at the usual address - StreetTeam@peta2.com.

URGENT: Burberry's Annual Meeting - Ask Them To Ban Fur July 16, 2008

Posted by Marta at July 16, 2008 11:17 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

Here's a quick announcement from Martin from peta2 UK. If you email StreetTeam@peta2.com saying you did this by the end of the week, we'll even give you 1,000 points!

-Pulin

Tomorrow morning, the 17th, Burberry is having their Annual General meeting for board members and shareholders. This is an awesome time for us to really let the top guys at Burberry know how we feel about their use of fur.

This is where we need your help. We want you guys to email in to Angela Ahrendts, Burberry CEO, and Christopher Bailey, their chief designer, and urge them to ban fur from their stores. Remember we are genuinely trying to make a difference so make sure you are polite and courteous as you could be saving the lives of animals.

Angela Ahrendts, CEO
Angela.Ahrendts@burberry.com

Christopher Bailey, Chief Designer
Christopher.Bailey@burberry.com

Thanks for helping the animals,

Martin

30 Days - Did You Watch It? June 18, 2008

Posted by Lara Sanders at June 18, 2008 3:18 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 22 ) | TrackBack

Did you watch the "Animal Rights" episode of 30 Days last night? If so, I told you! Wasn't it amazing? Sugar!

If you didn't watch, I disown you. No, not really, but I will if you don't catch the rerun!

Want to know what George (the hunter) had to say about the show? Look below!

When you were first selected to participate in this show, what did you expect the experience to be like?

I was pretty scared. I expected to be surrounded by people that just wanted to argue for a whole month. I'm not afraid of an argument, but I thought the numbers were stacked against me. All I was told was that I would be totally immersed in the animal rights movement. As far as the people I would meet, I expected a lot of angry people that yelled a lot. I figured girls and guys alike would be hairy-legged sandal-wearing hippies. For the most part, I was mistaken.

How did your opinion of animal rights activists change after your 30 days with the Karpels?

I realized almost immediately that animal rights activists, PETA members specifically, were very normal folks. That being said, there are some out there, just as with the factory farms, that give everyone involved a bad name. I learned about several examples of the abuse, neglect, and suffering that occur in factory farming. It's not a pretty industry, and if people were able to experience what I did, you might see a major change.

Are there any animal rights issues that are particularly important to you now that you hadn't thought about before staying with Melissa and her family?

I am aware that there need to be changes in factory farming, but aside from veganism, I haven't heard about a practical alternative. I personally prefer to buy my meat and produce from grocers that support the smaller local farms. The Burberry demonstration was hard-hitting, but we don't have very many fur coats in North Carolina. The one subject that I find the most offensive is vivisection. I can't give away anything about the show, but I had no idea how unnecessary it was. Tissue samples are infinitely more effective. For the sake of money, it seems people are abusing animals just because they can. They should be ashamed of themselves and pray that they never have to answer for their actions.

What are your views on the tactics that PETA uses to draw attention to the suffering of animals?

One area where I think PETA could use some P.R. work is separating themselves from some of the other animal rights groups out there. The term most people relate to animal rights is PETA. Anything that happens for the sake of animals, regardless of how offensive it is, gets hung on the neck of PETA. Consequently, most people think PETA people are nuts. I believe PETA does it the right way: education. They keep it fun and provide people with information.

***

Thanks George!

Did any of you watch the show? If so, what did you think?

xoxo- Lara

Bloody Burberry: The Fur Fighters (Video Game) March 26, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi at March 26, 2008 8:02 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

Check out this new game to help build some more support for the campaign to get fur out of Burberry stores.

I haven't had this much fun since Super Chick Sisters.

In Bloody Burberry: The Fur Fighters, you get to play as a fox, rabbit, or raccoon, and participate in cool anti-fur actions including spray painting fur coats, disrupting a fur-filled fashion show, and freeing animals from cages! Those things in reality are illegal, so you shouldn't do them. But, you can do them all you want in this game and then be inspired to go out and make a difference on the peta2 Street Team.

How did you do? Comment back and let me know! I beat the game on the first try (probably because I hate Burberry so much, otherwise I'm pretty horrible at video games... got my butt whooped in Super Smash Brothers last night).

Taste of Chaos and Silverstein UK Tours November 27, 2007

Posted by Marta at November 27, 2007 2:11 PM | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

Here's a special guest blog from Martin with peta2 UK!

I'm out on the road at the moment and I thought I would drop by and let you guys know how it's going tabling against Burberry. We are getting a great response at all the shows and I would like to say hi to all the people I have met over the past few days and a big thank you to all the Street Teamers who have helped me so far.

I got to try vegan haggis, neeps and tatties (to all you non-Scottish people, that's haggis, turnips and potatoes) in Glasgow and I have to say that I am completely sold on it. Yeah I know it sounds nasty, but if you ever get the chance, make sure you try it.

If any of you are out for any of the coming UK Silverstein dates make sure you pop by the stall and say hey.

Peace

Martin

PS - Oh one more thing: Make sure you check out this mission—The Anti-KFC Bulletin Bonanza.

bebe Stops Buying Fur but Keeps Selling It November 13, 2007

Posted by Marta at November 13, 2007 9:13 AM | Permalink | Comments ( 71 ) | TrackBack

We're happy to announce that after more than a year of education and negotiation with PETA (and e-mails from many of you), bebe has stopped buying fur! It's definitely a step in the right direction, since no more animals will be killed for their fur for bebe's clothing, but by continuing to sell items made of fur, bebe is sending its shoppers the message that it's okay to wear an animal's fur. Rabbits killed for their fur sometimes have their necks broken or have their skulls smashed before being strung up by their legs to slit their throats. Gruesome, isn't it?

Clothing retailers J.Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Wet Seal (who also happen to be some of bebe's top competitors) all pulled fur from their shelves upon pledging to go fur-free, but bebe is still selling fur.

Please don't shop at bebe this holiday season. Let's send the company a message that while it's great that they've pledged to go fur-free, we will only spend our hard-earned dollars at companies that are completely fur-free.

Itchin' to help more animals killed for their fur? Write the CEO of Burberry, Angela Ahrendts, urging her to remove fur from Burberry's collections permanently.

Oh, and if you haven't yet, be sure to order your "I'm an asshole; I wear fur stickers." 'Nuff said.

Thanks so much for sticking up for those without a voice—we appreciate it a lot, but the animals appreciate it even more.

Marta
