Kevin Garnett Has Transcended the PB&J June 18, 2008

The one where my Boston Celtics took apart the Los Angeles Lakers like they were made out of Legos and won their first NBA title since 1986? If you did, you might have caught an interview where my man Kevin Garnett talked about how he transferred (he actually said "transcended", which was awesome) his tradition of eating a whole mess of PB&Js before every game over to his Celtic teammates when he was traded there in the off-season.
Professional athletes? Eating peanut butter & jelly sandwiches?

I found this fascinating. The reaction to the interview was pretty much: "Look at KG and his wholesome, nutritious pre-game snack. It's so wholesome! And nutritious!" But PB&J is as much of a vegetarian staple as the Boca burger—I think I ate them for lunch every day for my first 8 years as a vegan. So why do I feel like if KG had said "I eat a vegan meal before every big game," the reaction would have been... different? It's like, everyone is cool with eating healthy, but for some reason eating vegan has this whole different connotation for some people... even though it's exactly the same thing.
I read an article on ESPN.com yesterday (while I was, uh, totally working hard and not on the interwebs) where Prince Fielder, Tony Gonzalez, Mac Danzig, and a bunch of other vegetarian athletes were talking about how being vegetarian has affected their game. No surprises: Gonzalez talks about having more energy in the 4th quarter of games and being able to blow by tired, meat-eating defenders, and Danzig talks about recovering faster from workouts. You can't argue with results. I figure, if a vegetarian diet is good enough for some of the top athletes on the planet, it's good enough for anyone.
So, note to the Lakers: maybe some PB&J will help next time. Although grabbing a few offensive boards wouldn't hurt either. Just sayin'.

fur Boston Taste of Chaos concerts furisdead
It's about a month into the launch of our Skelanimals Fur Is Dead campaign (Pledge to be 100,000 strong against fur!), and out here on the Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour us Road Warriors are rockin' it out, hardcore.

Earlier this week in Boston we had an amazing Street Teamer help us out and show Boston what's up.

And now, one of our favorite parts of tour (and life): GOOD VEG FOOD. We had a nice little family dinner at The Macaroni Grill in Atlanta. We all created our own pasta dishes with a HUGE selection of ingredients, yum!

They even gave us crayons which we used to create family portraits, cupcake style! I think it represents our crew perfectly. We suggest you get in touch with your inner cupcake.

Also this week, VERY EXCITING, Sarah joined us on the road to help spread the FUR IS DEAD word. You may recognize her from other such rad summer events such as Vans Warped Tour and Sounds of the Underground. Needless to say, she rules.

That's it for now, we're off to celebrate (soy) ice cream Monday, we suggest you do the same! Our recommendation: Peanut Butter Zig Zag from Purely Decadent. It makes us smile.
Peace out home slices.

KFC Take Action conference Boston Harvard
So this past weekend was the much-anticipated peta2 Take Action Conference at Harvard University, and boy was it fun!
The day started off with a rousing welcome and introduction by none other than peta2 head honcho Dan "I look powerful behind a podium" Shannon!

Probably one of my favorite parts of the day though was the "Question & Answer" session, which allowed attendees to talk about any issues they've faced with becoming vegetarian, dealing with unsupportive parents, or other problems in their efforts to speak out for animals!

Of course, it wouldn't be a peta2 event if we didn't end the day protesting outside of a local KFC! Notice Nicole "Needs a Stepladder to Use Pay Phones" Nuss as she stands with the countless other activists to make their voices heard!

So next time the Take Action Conference comes to your town, we had better see you there! Don't even pretend as though you don't want to hang out with the coolest kids in town...
