Could a Dolphin Help With Your Homework?

OK, so probably not (wouldn't that be sweet though?), but dolphins really are smart, second only to humans in intelligence according to a new study.

This study revealed that the brain cortex of dolphins has the same complicated folds associated with human intelligence and has the scientific community buzzing (and us regular people status updating like crazy!). Thomas White, professor of ethics at Loyola Marymount University, recommends that dolphins, (i.e. "nonhuman persons") be given the same moral standing as humans. PETA couldn't agree more! And since we wouldn't force our relatives to live in tanks, PETA is writing a letter to the National Marine Fisheries Service, asking that they stop issuing permits allowing dolphins to be captured and used as attractions at theme parks and resort hotels.

Dolphins think, plan, and communicate with one another. They're thoughtful, have distinct personalities, and a strong sense of self. Sounds a lot like, well … pretty much everyone I know. In the wild dolphins spend their entire lives in large groups, so removing them from their natural communities is traumatizing, often resulting in stress-related illnesses and premature death. They deserve to be treated better.

What do you think of this new finding?

Ohhh~ I just love dolphins… My sister watched wild ones jump together in a group… I wish all of the dolphins in the world were free like that.

Many animals are smarter than most people give them credit for. Pigs have the intelligence of an average 3-year old human, you would slaughter a child for food so why do we still do it to pigs?
