The veal industry. Baby cows, because their mom's milk ends up on store shelves, are torn from their mothers hours after they're born and then kept weak and immobile in filthy pens for the entirety of their short lives. And if that fails to register your compassion or your disgust, let's try this: Veal just might be laced with poison.
That's right—federal charges have been issued against Select Veal Foods Inc. for allegedly lacing feed with formaldehyde in order to lessen diarrhea and with potassium permanganate to ensure that the anemic calves' flesh appeared even lighter. Wayne Marcho and Select Veal Feeds are expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges of misbranding under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The company also faces a felony charge for lying to Food and Drug Administration inspectors.
The moral of this story? Every glass of milk you drink has a little veal in it. Not only do you contribute to the suffering of an infant, you also risk eating toxic chemicals that you'd find in your high school chemistry lab. What can you do? Try veganism today!

Posted by: Kenneth at October 3, 2009 12:38 PMUgh gross, I am SO glad I became a vegan 2 years ago, my only regret is not becoming a vegan sooner.
Posted by: Olivia at October 3, 2009 7:57 PMAgreed. My mom is a vegetarian, but she refuses to see the relation of the veal industry to the dairy industry. She ays that it is a kindness to the animal to releive them of their breastmilk (she herself could produce 45oz of milk a day when my siblings were still babies.) But if the cow is never impregnated in the first place, then they don't have breast pain at all.
Posted by: pinkdoggie7 at October 4, 2009 3:26 PMI would like to stop drinking milk, but I'm only 13 years old and I live with my parents. They WILL NOT let me stop drinking milk or dairy products, even though I really want to.
Posted by: nadine fabre at October 4, 2009 3:46 PMhow sad! this is why i quit veal(well meat) last year. i love you peta!
Posted by: Jenny at October 4, 2009 8:43 PMThis is pretty sick, & sad! I stoped drinking Milk about 2 weeks ago. Even better I went to soy silk, and it is realy good. The best part I'm not paying for milk that has been through God knows what, or not even knowing what it is..YUK.... I even made sure the last time I was in the store, to speak out loud to my other half about land O Lakes as we were picking up our soy milk..lol.. and yes there were people looking at me pretty odd.

Posted by: Ben Dover at October 6, 2009 1:50 AMwhy do ppl have 2 be so mean 2 animals?!?!? VEAL IS MORE DISGUSTING THAN HAMBURGERS, HOT DOGS, HAM SLICES, AND CICI PERKINS MOM PUT 2GETHER?!?!?!?!? NO THAT IS DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: austin at October 6, 2009 9:41 AMI'm a proud vegan!
Leah: Peta2 isn't trying to make you feel guilty, they're giving you the facts that the dairy industry would rather you didn't know!
Posted by: Little_Lotte at October 6, 2009 10:06 AMLeah: Meat eaters say the same bullshit. Beans, pasta, rice, tomato sauce, falafel, fruits & vegetables are available at any grocery store. You don't need speciality foods to go vegan. Stop making excuses and stop supporting torture.
Posted by: Vee at October 6, 2009 4:22 PMYour mom said you couldnt be vegan? My mom told me i couldnt either, but when i proved it was truly something i wanted to do and believed in she broke and started to take me seriously.
Posted by: Jade at October 6, 2009 7:55 PMIf you dont like soy milk or have concerns about the claims that it is harmful to your health you can try Almond Milk! Its absolutely amazing! We started drinking it 5 yrs ago because the protein in soy is very similar to the protein in milk. My son is autistic and so we were on the Casine Free Glutin Free Diet. (I do feel sorry for those almonds though.. they have such small nipples :-) J/K) Just remember if you buy non animal products from a manufacture that also supplies the egg, meat or dairy industry it is just as bad as eating the eggs, meat or dairy. Pay attention to the brand and know that they are vegan. Basically you cant go to a fast food place without supporting the meat industry.. it doesnt matter if you have a salad.
Posted by: Julia at October 7, 2009 11:12 AMMy mom made me stop being vegetarian... I love sneaking it around her! Like oh i'm full, that meat is gross. I've also stopped drinking milk, but I hate silk idk it tastes funny, so I avoid it all together
Posted by: Aidan at October 8, 2009 10:52 AMThanks for the info! Also, most of the air in the US is contaminated, so I would advise everyone to stop breathing it just to be safe!!!
Posted by: Jsmith at October 20, 2009 3:01 PMI'm not vegan, but I buy all of my dairy stuff from a local farm where I know the owners, so I don't contribute to cruelty.
