The Agonist's EXCLUSIVE Video Premiere and Contest! September 3, 2009
Posted by Shannon Phillips | Permalink | Comments ( 156 ) | TrackBackAttention metal fans ... do you enjoy piercing guitar solos, crashing drums, and vocals that go from gutteral growling to operatic beauty? Yeah, I thought so. If you're not already familiar, now is the time to check out the female fronted Canadian metal quintet, The Agonist.

With no signs of slowing down, The Agonist has gained recognition (and quite the following) with every release, and their single "Business Suits and Combat Boots," even won Viewer's Choice honors on Headbanger's Ball. Not only does The Agonist score points in the metal scene, but they score points with us too. Vegetarian since birth and vegan for 10 years, vocalist Alissa is no stranger to animal rights. In an interview earlier this year, Alissa discussed vegetarianism, videos documenting cruelty to animals, and product testing on animals. Knowing this, what better place to debut their new video for "Thank You Pain" than peta2!
Says Alissa, "I am very honored to have peta2 premiere our video. Since PETA fights for a lot of the same things I do in my songs, it's great to be able to partner up again. I look forward to working with them on future campaigns as well. They are perceived as a daring organization that pushes the boundaries in order to expose what people normally turn a blind eye to. We have noticed that a lot of our fans are extremely intelligent, interesting people so we think they will be excited about this video debut as well."
The Agonist and peta2, a perfect match? I think so. Check out the band's amazing video for "Thank You Pain" below ...
To celebrate the release of The Agonist's new video premiere, we want to give you the chance to win a prize pack courtesy of Century Media Records. For your chance to win a copy of Lullabies for the Dormant Mind and a signed poster, please comment with your thoughts on the video. Five winners will be chosen at random. Entries must be received by September 30, and winner will be notified by October 14.

Posted by: Rian Wunderlin at September 3, 2009 11:53 AMAmazing, as always. Alissa never ceases to amaze me with her vocals.
Great to see local bands getting into peta!
I love the creativeness of the video...it's very unique. Alissa's voice is so powerful and captivating. Love it!
Posted by: Grace at September 3, 2009 12:00 PMCool video! I love the concept with the whole court setup. Definitely their best video yet.
Posted by: Dennis at September 3, 2009 12:06 PMone word: AMAZING.
Posted by: Wyn X at September 3, 2009 12:16 PMThis song has amazing content but i think the video does not do it justice. When you but text in the middle of a video it takes away from the song. But all the footage of the band and Alissa really represents the song well. overall this was a really good music video made by a amazing band.
Posted by: Terris Dietz at September 3, 2009 12:25 PMReally a great video. It makes me want to fly to their next show! I like the costumes and the backgrounds, i guess this kind of video is the best way to present the (amazing) song and i hope this band could finally reach the visibility that deserves.
Alissa really likes that old iron maiden style collant? XD
Posted by: Lorenzo at September 3, 2009 12:33 PMHumanity is on trial. Are you guilty?
Posted by: Melody at September 3, 2009 12:53 PMTHIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE SONG.
ps love the video too
Posted by: Brandon at September 3, 2009 12:55 PMi wish she was my judge for my speeding ticket trial =[
but i'm glad to finally see a new video after awhile of waiting for something new besides the new outfit she had on their myspace and that she's now wearing on this video... i like the little hat =3
and what i would like the most is having a new poster to put up next to my resident evil: extinction movie poster! =]
HOT METAL CHICKS ROCK MY PURPLE SOCKS OFF!!

Posted by: Kaitlyn Haney at September 3, 2009 2:40 PMLoved this video! This is probably my favorite female fronted metal band, and I love the new album. Really cool concept for this video too, not sure which video from this album I like better though.
Posted by: Justin at September 3, 2009 3:10 PMThe video shows that they're certainly a stylish band and they definitely RAWK! I love the outfits and the concept is good but I think more could've been made of it.
p.s. I hope that wasn't a real feather she was waving around...unless it was one she found and dyed herself!
Posted by: Little_Lotte at September 3, 2009 3:11 PMJust watched it 10 times in a row:P, My favourite band of all time, and i cant say its my favourite song on the album because every song is just as mind blowing as the next, i love the video as it effectively conveys the juxtaposition between the judge and the accused, and really shows what the song is about unlike most music videos that have nothing to do with the song itself, awesome vid!
Posted by: Kris Onderwater at September 3, 2009 3:13 PMThe song was great, setting was amazing, Alissa was gorgeous.
The video was beautiful, but I didn't like all so much. I see the greatness of it though.
The fact that the singer has been a vegetarian since birth and a vegan for ten years so just so incredible. She gave me a lot of faith that I'll too be a vegan for that long one day. And maybe one day, I can raise my kids vegetarian!
Awesome music though, and an even better message!
i love this song, Alissas vocals are amazing!
no less than expected from the agonist!
Posted by: Claire Roe at September 3, 2009 4:53 PMi loved the video
this is a great way to make people realize
what harm they are doing to the world
humans can be punished by murdering someone
but what about animals?
people dont realize that animals are part of us
and they are in our cycle of life
AWESOME
Posted by: JAMES LYNAM at September 3, 2009 5:34 PMI think the video was amazing.
"thank you pain" has been on of my favouraite agonist songgs since i first heard it.
the video was shot an cut togther great and was better than i imagined it to be. Alissa looked great in the video and i love it that she like me fight for animals.
loved the courtroom scenes with Alissa in the hood, almost made it seem like the judge was evil, which is how a criminal would see the judge.
Omg, this isnt the kind of music I usually listen to, but they're fantastic! The vocals are superb. :D heehee love the drums.
Thanks for introducing me to new music, and this band, Peta2!
Posted by: Celine at September 3, 2009 7:01 PMI had been waiting for the video since I heard about it in March! Finally it premiered, and it was much worth the wait!!! "Thank You, Pain" is the song that got me addicted to The Agonist. I went on the Century Media website, and there it was: "Thank You, Pain" playing on the homepage! After that, I fell in love with The Agonist. The video is so great, the setting is beautiful, and Alissa and the band look awesome! I love the whole "accused" and "judge" thing; it relates to the video, unlike most songs by other artists. The Agonist is now my favorite band!!! I can't wait to see what they'll do next!
Posted by: Luis at September 3, 2009 7:39 PMI love the fact that this band brings us full metal with heavy rifts and gutteral vocal, fronted by a woman. i stumbled across them after trying to find some metal bands with a woman in because it is quote clear we dont have enough woman in the metal scene and alissa just blows everyone away with her awesome growls, beautiful singing and always she is gorgeous! I LOVE THE AGONIST!!! \M/
thank you alissa for representing us woman in the metal world!!!!
very cool

Posted by: jean-philippe at September 3, 2009 9:15 PMThe Agonist finally gets a video with the quality they deserve. Also, they match perfectly with PETA's standards.
Can't wait to see you guys in Brazil!
Awesome vid,my favorite song by them
Posted by: Dr.Ayzen at September 3, 2009 10:03 PMI love it so much, that I posted a link to this video on my Facebook profile and on the song's Last.FM page. Brilliant work. The text screens that flash throughout the video are an amazing idea too. This is my MOST played artist on Last.FM with 1,509 plays!
Posted by: -=Ben=- at September 3, 2009 10:20 PMI've been a fan of The Agonist from seeing them live at Jaxx in Virginia...I've been spreading the word about them...Great video!!!
Posted by: at September 3, 2009 10:22 PMI have seriously been watching this video since 3:00 in the afternoon... and it is now 10:30 at night! (lol) The song itself is amazing.. and it has a amazing video to follow. I think that the video truly shows what the song is about. Unlike a lot of videos. And I do have to say in my opinion that this is their best video yet. Alissa and the rest of the band did a awesome performance in the video. And the video was shot well.. its really unique as well. Great Job done!! They are my favorite female fronted band I must say!
Posted by: Derek at September 3, 2009 10:31 PMYou're Fuckin' Awesome!

I hope you can see the fans to take a pictures or some autographs. Please!
The Agonist rocks! :)

I think this band is amazing. They are unique and beyond talented. Music is getting to repetitive and The Agonist and really a great refreshment from the same-old same-old.

Posted by: Dylan Harrison at September 4, 2009 12:26 AMWhy is it said a female fronted band when the only thing that maters is dose it rock or not! And yes the Agonist RULES!!!!
Posted by: Davin at September 4, 2009 12:35 AMI love this song so much one of my favorite songs off the album. Keep up the great work you do as a band and with PETA; Can't wait to see you guys in concert. Wishing you all the best
Posted by: Orlando Walker at September 4, 2009 12:42 AMI became a vegetarian few months ago, because my doctor said so. And I had really no idea, that thanks to that and Peta organisation i found really, really good band.... Keep rocking, that video is awesome...
Posted by: Ivan Staffen at September 4, 2009 12:56 AMwell this is an amazing video it´s simple but at the same time has a message, i think that the lyrics mentions the natural humang bieng, we are capable of a great horrors and also a great compassion, "thank u pain god bless the suffering" maybe this wanna mean that we can learn about our mistakes and do not repeat the horros of our history like wars, race violence, discrimination, and it could be mention the courts "enforcement of laws" how many innocent people are in jail. Well that´s all i don´t wanna ofend no one it´s just my point of view.
Weel cya guys in mexico city, i can´t wait to see the agonist on the stage and also meet u guys, i got my ticket :D, thanx 4 the visit, ur great music. This is not another heavy band, they got conscience about the problems of our world, and they want to do their part against this problems sending a message to all the people with their music respect.
with my bestregards Jorge
Loved the video, i like so much Alissa's voice, how can she turn guttural growls into a soft and nice voice is amazing..
I hope to see The Agonist someday here in Argentina, i'd like so much to see them live!
Best wishes.
Posted by: Mariano Garcia at September 4, 2009 1:13 AMYou forgot to mention that Chris Kells, the bass player is also a vegetarian. :)
Posted by: Rachel at September 4, 2009 1:23 AMShe's wearing the same leggings as she did on tour, haha. Great vocal range on this song.
Posted by: Derek W at September 4, 2009 1:42 AMI've always found The Agonist's music to be nothing short of incredible. Alissa is a warrior and a champion for animals everywhere, and she inspires me to be the same.
Posted by: Rachel-Rebecka at September 4, 2009 1:45 AMI got into this band a few years back, before their firsst album came out. Everything they do comepletely blows away anything they've done before, they just keep getting better.
I am so happy and proud on how far they've come in just a few short years. I'm happy to be a dedicated fan of this band. Not only they're music but everything they stand for.
This whole album is absolutely amazing and so full of energy. This video represents the song and it's meaning perfectly. It turned out better than I imagined it would. I was blown away by how amazing their video for Eulogies was, and then this one is even more exceptional.
Posted by: Chloe Armstrong at September 4, 2009 2:46 AMAlissa White-Gluz is definitely one of the best female vocalists in metal. The video is the best video the band has released so far. It's visually very stylish and the different characters between screaming and clean vocals is also a fun idea. Good work!
Posted by: Jukka R. at September 4, 2009 3:13 AMThe video was awesome. It was very similar to how I had pictured it. Thank You Pain is my favorite track on the album, so seeing the video to it now is brilliant! The camera angles and especially the vividness of the colors was absolutely amaying!
I could listen to the song and watch the video for years!
The song is awesome, the clip is stunning
A skilful blend of music and acting.
The riffs rock like hell, Alissa is godly
Her voice with the strings does entwine insanely.
My favorite song it is, no doubt The Agonist
is a non-pareil band and shall ever so be.
Simply great!!
Agonists, keep on like that!!
Posted by: EmaGht at September 4, 2009 5:47 AMThis video is amazing. It follows the lyrics which is awesome. The guitarists are complete shredders...I'm thinking these 2 deserve a cover for Guitar World. The drumming in the song is intense and I'm a huge fan of this band. I just recently heard of the Agonist through Threat Signal, being that they're on tour together. I cannot get enough of Lullabies for the Dormant Mind. It hasn't left my CD player since I bought it. Cheers, your band rules!
Posted by: Geof Cooper at September 4, 2009 8:51 AMIncrível!
I love the heavy weight in theyr sound, but more than this. I know that what they are sayng is what the world truly needs:
Truth
Most metal videos, to be blunt, are not very well done. However, this video portrays the story in the song very well. I saw The Agonist live a few weeks ago on their tour with threat signal and they played this song. Afterwards I met Alissa at the merch booth. She was wearing one of the outfits in the video throughout the whole tour. Ever since seeing them on the Sonata Arctica headline tour two years ago, they have been one of my favorite bands.
Posted by: justin at September 4, 2009 9:45 AMThe Agonist is my favorite band! I'm so excited to see them on peta! :) She's so inspiring.
Posted by: at September 4, 2009 10:12 AMI just love this band, both albums they released are breathtaking...such intensity, such technique, such lyrical content...i love the way Alissa sings(all the way from the lows to the highs) and her presence, as well as the rest of the band, is just awesome! As to this Video, its just perfect fit for the song. The trial idea is great and is perfectely executed by the genious mind and work of David Brodsky(hail to you once again!!!), so this is one epic release yet again from The Agonist!!Praise from Portugal!! :)
Posted by: João Diogo at September 4, 2009 10:21 AMI love this band, love this sight. An amazing video overall. Don't stop singing, don't stop playing. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Brian R at September 4, 2009 10:23 AMThis song shows everything i love about this band :) even after being sent all the songs off this album, i still went out and bought it just to own one of the best albums I've ever heard :)

Posted by: DavyDavy at September 4, 2009 5:59 PMThe Agonist is by far my favorite band. Another great video from the band with one of the most talented lead singers that I've seen. And gorgeous too!
Posted by: Greg at September 4, 2009 6:09 PMI love their new video! They are getting better and better! && Alissa looks beautiful!! Im glad that they are getting their name out there. They all deserve it especially since they Have so much to give not just in the music industry but as well as helping with Animal rights!
I love the emotions and lyrics Alissa sings and screams. Its great to see pretty girls fronting metal bands and being unique. The video gives itself a gothic feel and the attire Alissa wears looks amazing :-)
Posted by: Michael L at September 4, 2009 6:43 PMVery nice. There are a lot of strong musicians in this band, and the singer's vocal range is incredible.
I'm not surprised the band's so involved in animal rights issues: After all, metal has always been about denying "conventional" thinking and shaking up the status quo. That's why metal is so vital.
Posted by: James at September 4, 2009 7:00 PMWow that was a deeper video then I was expecting,I hope to see things like this later on too. It was very dark artistic and amazing band, everyone plays amazing together!! Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Rick Lowell at September 4, 2009 8:34 PMWow, that video was kind of amazing... Its really cool that its premeired on peta2... I didn't know she was a vegan for so long... Now I don't just like their music, I know that they actually believe in the same things I do... cool =)

Posted by: Jasmine Pittman-Soto at September 4, 2009 11:42 PMThe Agonist doesn't leave you in agony. That's for sure. Alissa and all, they rock!!! She's a very strong vocalist!!!
Posted by: Hugh Holo at September 5, 2009 9:28 AMI love how she can sing opera and scream metal in the same sentence. The band is wonderful and I have been following them since I first saw a video late one night on MTV2 while in training before I deployed to Afghanistan. I sold many friends onto their music while over there as well as when I got home and saw a new album coming out. Keep on keepin' on!

Posted by: Matt Kellogg at September 5, 2009 10:24 AMI'm following this Montreal band 'till their debuts and I was very impressed by this video and the one they made on the song ''... Posted by: Annie at September 7, 2009 9:53 AMProbably the best videoclip ever because this is the best music band ever! :)
Amazing voice! I love how she can change her voice from soft to hard. It's a really amazing talent that so many people would love to have. And she's Canadian! There aren't alot of good Canadian bands these days. The rest of the band are great too. Chris Adolph is a great guitarist. So is Danny. I REALLY like Simon's drums. They compliment the song perfectly. But the thing that really makes this band rock is that they address real issues in their songs-especially animal rights. So, GO AGONISTS!
Posted by: Jemina at September 7, 2009 12:11 PMi love the volcals and the video, not just the music, really speaks to you and makes you think. so what are YOU thinking?

Posted by: mary teneyck at September 19, 2009 5:57 PMThis is one of my favorite female fronted bands and bands in general. I've loved them since back in '07 when I first saw the video for Business Suits and Combat Boots. I love how Alissa can show that women can and WILL hold their own in the metal scene while spreading the message of animal rights. This band does and always will hold my heart.
As for the video, a piece of pure genius.

Posted by: pocks at September 24, 2009 8:11 AMi loved the video
this is a great way to make people realize
what harm they are doing to the world
humans can be punished by murdering someone
but what about animals?
people dont realize that animals are part of us
and they are in our cycle of life
thank you pain
and thanks to the agonist! love the video! cant wait to see them again!
theres only one word even remotely close to describing how awesome this video is and thats 'Extravegant'. now this is how music should be ^-^
Posted by: nina at September 24, 2009 3:08 PMCall the Exorcist!! She's loose and singing. Please accept my entry. Thank you.
Posted by: Ken Robinson at September 24, 2009 3:54 PMThis video is amazing, the song is amazing. It's really good to see a band that can sing about something more relevant than broken hearts and paparazzis.
Waiting for them to reschedule their concert in Brazil, can't wait to see them live!
oo i like it :)
and my hair was sorta like that once, this makes me miss it. lol
Sounds good!! Would love to win!!
Posted by: connie s. at September 24, 2009 8:40 PMSo awesome! I think I've found my new favourite band. I love her clothes.
Posted by: Amanda at September 24, 2009 8:48 PMOMG! I LOVE the Agonist! This video is really well done. The story, settings, costumes, lighting, and they must had a really nice camera because the quality is amazing. The one thing (and it's a small thing) I don't like about their music is they have such awesome and meaningful lyrics, but sometimes you can't hear them :o(
Posted by: Melinda at September 24, 2009 10:16 PMWow. All I have to say is wow. :D This is the very first I have ever heard of these guys, and I think I'm in love! xD I saw them on the homepage, so I was like, what the heck, I'll check it out. And I'm really glad I did! I'll definitely continue to listen to them in the future. Thanks PETA. :D
Posted by: Abbi Gale at September 25, 2009 12:10 AMI was always taught to spell it "lullabyes." ;-)
Posted by: Jenny at September 25, 2009 11:45 AMive loved the agonist for a long time. but i never knew the singer was a vegan. thats awesome :) i love them just that much more
Posted by: kimberly at September 25, 2009 4:09 PMWow! She screams really, really well. Plus, the setting of the video makes it seem a lot like Phantom of the Opera, which I LOVE. The opera-like singing parts add to the mystique. It reminds me of Evanescence, only harder, more fast-paced, and more interesting. Props to the whole band for looking so great doing what they do best, punching you in the face with their music!
Posted by: Grant Hartley at September 26, 2009 10:43 AMThese guys just don't stop amazing me. First, it was their intricate yet heavy songs. Now, they're vegetarian?!
Can I meet them now and die happy? :3
its pretty much the most amazing video ever.
Posted by: Kyle Inman at September 26, 2009 10:53 PMI think that this music video is absolutly amazing. It shows the power of women vocals and the clarity that being vegan/vegetarain has given her. Allisa and the rest of the band certainly rock my socks. lol. I love this band and so does my chiken who roams freely amoungst the outdoors and in the house when she wants to come in. Now we must sit and listen while Allisa's vocals help my chicken drift to sleep.
