URGENT: Why Is the Military Torturing Animals?

Posted on August 19, 2009 at 6:05 pm | Permalink | Comments (22)

If it's not enough that both medical tests and product tests on animals are unreliable, wasteful and cruel, the U.S. military continues to shoot pigs, cut apart goats, and poison and burn monkeys in the name of war.

Animals don't start wars, and can't choose to fight, and there is simply no reason for the U.S. to continue torturing animals in the name of experiments that are outdated—while reliable, modern and effective alternatives and treatments exist.

Even though other countries have decided that, obviously, chopping up animals and experimenting on their dead bodies—which aren't the same as ours—is not effective, the Department of Defense and military bases in the U.S. haven't heard our voices clear enough.

Check out peta2's new Military Trauma campaign site and help us end military experiments now!

Please don't take this the wrong way, as I'm all for animal rights, but…
The military doesn't listen to anyone but the top brass in Washington. They won't listen to civilians, let alone a group they feel would "never make it in the military." They see PETA as they did the hippies in the 60's.

Please don't take this the wrong way… Amoung my friends i am known as a tree hugger, and an avid animal lover, and animal rights activist… yes testing animals for make-up purposes and products is more than wrong since make-up and other such products are NOT a necessity for human life… plus we can easily recruit people by paying them or offering an incentive to test these products in human trial tests… with the military, it is slightly dif., one… on the battlefield, most times they don't have the chance to test how the enemy might react to a certain explosion, new bullet, how the body will react to a new type of armor, how that armor will how up to diff types of bombs, such as shrapnel, and such… It is very difficult to understand these types of things, and since we ARE at war, and this WAR does NOT have a single ENEMY, and the enemy can be ANYONE. Do you know that while walking down a regular patrol a 10 year old child playing in the streets could be setting up a bomb, or pull out a gun and start shooting at you… when you can get human volunteers to test new bullets, or new types of vest, and such, then I will feel that testing these new techniques on animals is wrong, but as a FEMALE MARINE, I don't want to be sent to Iraq, or Korea, or Iran, or Afghanistan, where no one WANTS us THERE, without the best protection, the best body armor, and the best weapons… It is saving human lives, and since WE ARE AT WAR, it is protecting the lives of so many soldiers. This is the ultimate question that must be asked when dealing with human rights and animal rights. Is the life of an animal less important, than the life of a human… the answer is NO, I consider them equals… but with the equality thing, they must be treated like equals… and since plenty of soldiers are fighting and risking thier lives to keep our freedom and your right to protest, a few animals must suffer to save more people from death, and prevent more animal suffering… It doesn't happen for just the hell of it… there is a valid reason behind it.

Oh my lord. This is terrible. Why are we still testing on animals?! This is 2009 for crying out loud, we should have more advanced ways, virtual ways so innocent animals are not harmed. The military still sees us as 'flower smelling, grass eating hippies.' My brother has a friend in the military and those were his exact words.

how dare you say the soldiers deserve everything they can get? how DARE you! they are doing everything they can to fight and come back home! you obviously know NO ONE in the military. they have no choice in what they are ordered to do as much as the animals had no choice in participating in this. when you are risking your life and getting shot at, seeing your friends blow up and limbs fly everywhere, then say something like that. war is hell, and so is a person like you

First off I love animals and animal abuse is something I just dont stand for. However there are several benefits to this type of training that the military provides. First of all the animals that are chosen for this type of trainging are generally injured or sick in some way to begin with. Secondly these animals are under VERY HEAVY anesthesia, so they dont feel a thing. There are vets on stand by who are constantly monitoring the vital signs of the animals to determine if they need more drugs. This type of training is not only beneficial to the medics in training, but it is also valueable for all of those lives that that those medics will go on to save. How helpful would those medics be in a masvie casualty situation when they have never experienced it before? To have a medic "freeze up" in situation like that could cost several lives. As much as I love animals, I love my battle buddies more. If this kind of training will help to bring even one more soldier home alive, then in my eyes it was well worth it.

I agree that the military's actions here are deplorable (I definitely almost cried looking at those photos). But seriously? Are you trying to tell me that you find that little value in human life? As 'proud army wife' said, this people are doing what they are ordered. If you really want to change this, you need to start at the top, start by petitioning your representatives in Congress about how you feel about this practice. If you do it right and with a big enough group, I'm sure you won't find anyone who can disagree with you that animal testing/torture is a horrible idea, and that it needs to stop. But blaming the people at the bottom of the military food chain is just silly and pointless. Plus it really makes you sound like an unfeeling, uncaring, fairly poor excuse of an activist.

  19. save a human or animal? says:

I agree completely terrible to diss the military, they fight for our lives. They never did anything wrong to you, just as animals have never done. Yet you will not give a HUMAN who sacrifices theirl ife for YOU your respect. But you can give an animal who does not sacrifice life you their respect? They both deserve respect. And if the military is forced to do this by orders, who do we blame? Not them. I can't say this mistreatment of animals is okay just so our military can "practice", because it is not, but I feel we don't even know the whole of this story to be judging.

YUP!! If you go into the Army/Militry/Navy what do you expect???!!! SOLDIERS KNOW THAT DEATH IS PART OF WAR. THEY GO INTO IT KNOWING. YEs I feel bad for them but its not like we all slap a smily face sticker on war and nobody knows the truth. People know what war is supposed to be like. I know soldiers ,yes I like them as people but I do not agree with them. The military should not be doing what it is doing to animals. I don't know how many soldiers know that the army tortures animals. But the business of war IS the business of killing, so, No ARMYWIFE they DID have a choice!! They CHOSE the military.

people dont go into the military to kill animals, they go in to help their families and do things that people like you would never consider. they risk their lives for the country. they have no choice in what they are told to do. dont put the blame on the soldiers, put the blame on the department of defense. these are brave as hell men and women. more brave then any of you. much more brave. they cant say no to this. they cant just "quit" their job. the government owns them. get a clue, kids. do not put the soldiers at fault, do not wish harm on them.
