Ramen: The Vegan College Superfood August 25, 2009

l_421be7867480419ea624519c17a7b28a.gifAhh, ramen. The mere mention of the word turns heads from Hawaii Pacific University to Florida State.

With classes tragically starting up again, students nationwide are stocking up on bulk orders of America's favorite 11-cent microwaveable noodles.

The key to a successful ramen dish is all in the preparation. Here are some important factors to consider:

  • Make sure to get vegan ramen noodles! Watch out for the notorious Maruchan brand (now with extra chicken fat). Stick with Nissin Top Ramen Oriental Flavor for maximum deliciousness.
  • Think outside of the box (or bag, as the case may be). Ramen can be used in far more extravagant dishes, including Ancient Japanese Noodle Secret Salad, Rent's Due "Cheezy" Ramen, and Freshasaurus Mex Ramen Casserole (all highlighted in PETA's Vegan College Cookbook).
  • Take pictures! By posting your creations on Facebook, you can show your friends that being vegan is not only cheap and easy, but delicious too (this is called "snacktivism").
Ready to give it a whirl? Check out the legendary recipe for 'Pimp My Ramen' Noodles, which was concocted by peta2's very own Starza Kolman and Marta Holmberg.

Bon appetit!

LOVE IT!!! Whole Foods also has an off-brand of Ramen that is all organic and vegan and really good! They are about $1 a package there.

the one problem with all that vegan recepies is that in other countries (like mine) we dont have things like sloppy joe sauce, ramen, vegan mayo, vegan parmesan.... so it makes it knd of hard to be a vegan as it is, or follow these recepies

I love ramen :)
I don't use the seasoning that comes with it.
I use seasoning salt, garlic salt, and franks redhot sauce.

I just had ramen for lunch. I don't use the boulon mix... I use a fork full of vegetable boulon instead. Then, I sprinkle the powdered mix on top of my compaion animal Rocky's food. He loves it! Of course, I add water on top.

I put cubed tofu, bok choy, green onions and cayenne pepper, and the Oriental flavor pack in it. Use two extra cups of water and two veg boullion cubes. So freaking delicious!

I agree with Michelle, I can´t find half on the ingridients of each recepie in my country, I´m vegan but really I have lots of problems triying to find tasty things to eat, I have to eat only toffu and vegetables :(

If you're in the UK, Sainsbury's sell their own brand of packet noodles for just 10p, and they're vegan! They taste ok on their own (with the seasoning provided) but just add a little sauce and they're lovely!
