PETA's Statement on Eagles Vick Signing August 14, 2009

Michael Vick dogfighting NFL Eagles
PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Philadelphia Eagles have chosen to sign a man who hanged dogs from trees, electrocuted them with jumper cables, held them underwater until they drowned in his swimming pool, and even threw his own family dogs into the fighting pit to be torn to shreds while he laughed. What sort of message does this send to young fans who care about animals and don't want to see them be harmed?
PETA certainly hopes that Vick has learned his lesson and feels truly remorseful for his crimes—but since he's given no public indication that that's the case, only time will tell. At this point, all Eagles fans can do is cross their fingers and hope that they won't ever have to explain to their sons and daughters what a "rape rack" is and why their favorite player was using one, as Falcons fans once had to.

He's no role model so I hope young people never forget what he did.
Posted by: Little_Lotte at August 14, 2009 12:22 PMHe disgusts me.
He shouldn't be allowed to play again.
Whether he's remorseful or not doesn't really matter. He can never take back what he did.
i cant believe that anyone would give that guy a chance. he disgusts me.
Posted by: viktoriaaaaa at August 14, 2009 12:55 PMThis is truly disgusting. How could the Eagles even want his name on their team? It is embarrassing on their part. He should have to pay the consequences for his actions, and never playing football again on a professional team should be one of those consequences.
Posted by: Victoria at August 14, 2009 12:55 PMI agree with Devon and Little_Lotte. I am not a vegetarian by any means but I love all animals. I think they are more important than people...
I really dont think he should be doing anything other than cleaning up animal poop for the rest of his life.
As of today I am officially done with the NFL and football related activities. Now I have never really been interested in football of any kind but this event takes the cake and pretty much leaves me dumb founded. Of all the ridiculous crazy things to do the dumbass city of Philadelphia, PA has decided to pick up Michael Vick as a player. While this might not seem like that big of a deal to other people it is a huge deal to me and I don't wanna hear the "he served his time"'s and the "their just animals"'s because that's not how I see it.
Michael Vick destroyed thousands of lives in any other situation he would've been in jail for a minimum of 10 years but because he's a big, fancy, famous, football player he got off wth less than 2 years in jail and some lame community service for killing thousands of living, breathing, pain feeling, creatures that cannot speak for themselves. I know he didn't kill people but dogs are better than people. You can tell a dog anything you want and they will never tell anyone. A dog is excited everytime you come home and sad everytime you leave because they love you so much. Any animal, especially dogs, just want to be loved and want to love their masters and Michael Vick is a pathetic excuse of a human who has no respect for life and doesn't deserve to have one and by getting his job back (in some respect) it is like a slap in the face to anyone who has ever advocated for any animal.
I guess it is just people like Vick who make me want to become someone who gives a voice to the mute. Because of arrogant people like him who have no cares in the world besides themselves I will help those animals who are helpless and who have been abandoned by the people who are supposed to care for them
I don't even follow football, but I'd be willing to bet that there will be animal rights activists at every Eagles game holding up some BIG signs....
If I were the coach I woulda thought twice about that headache before signing him lol.
it's incredible how little ethic and discipline means in the world of sports...
Posted by: Alexander Hegelund at August 14, 2009 1:07 PMI am a HUGE football fan and I am so disgusted by the fact that the NFL allowed him back in, especially so soon. I am even more sickened that he was signed. This action promotes what wrongs he wrote and teaches kids that what he did is okay and that he is a role model. I plan to boycott all things NFL and am bringing most of my friends and family along with me. Hopefully the NFL will come to their senses sooner rather than later, and hopefully no more innocent blood will be shed thanks to this heartless "man."
Posted by: Kerri Wolfe at August 14, 2009 1:08 PMwhy the hell is this douchebag not in jail?
Posted by: jordan at August 14, 2009 1:22 PMdude what kind of s**t is that i mean what does that have to do with football eather i mean id be dissapointed with him too! geez what a scumbag
Posted by: Stephanie at August 14, 2009 1:26 PMOK, OK, I am a HUGE Eagles fan, have been for 20 years. I agree, I am not happy at all about their signing of Vick. I think he is a horrible person and should never be in a position to be anyone's football hero/role model. Now, after saying that, let me say this. Nobody knows if he is truly remorseful for what he has done, and he says that he will be working with certain communities to stop dog fighting. IF HE IS actually sorry and wants to make a difference and be the voice against dog fighting....GOOD! Think of it this way, if you have ever had a major problem in life, drug addiction, dealing with death, abus, etc... Who's opinion and guidance do you value the most? Someone that has been there! Someone that has gone through it and can relate. Look, I am not saying the guy is a saint, I am just saying he might be able to be a powerful voice in the fight against dog fighting and animal rights. But I want to make clear, I am not happy he is back in the NFL, I am not happy he signed with the Eagles and I am not happy that he got such a light prison sentence. Let's just hope this whole thing can turn somewhat positive in the future.
Posted by: Byron at August 14, 2009 1:52 PMi have a big problem with the whole damn thing but i'm gonna hit on a few key points & let it go:
#1 why is it that Vick can commit a felony & still make millions? if you were an average person you wouldn't be able to even get a decent paying job after a felony & in most cases you would be looking for a job for years & still only get minimum wage!
#2 does the NFL not understand that kids look up to sports stars? all they are doing is sending the message that it is OK & "looked over" if you want to abuse innocent animals.
#3 it is a proven fact that people who abuse animals are more likely to harm humans! so whats next? are we gonna be "forgiving" him for raping or beating women?
i am torn! i have been a NFL football fan since i can remember & now i really do NOT want to support it at all! not just the eagles, but the whole NFL!
Posted by: J at August 14, 2009 1:55 PMI think if i ever saw him i would spit in his direction, he discoust me.
Posted by: Natasha at August 14, 2009 1:56 PMI am a very devoted animal lover and vegetarian. This is wrong that they allow him to come back, But the message that they are sending to the children is proper. As much as I hate him, he did his time. I understand the anger this makes. But The message that it is sending is I believe the correct message. He served his time, and now he is free. If they didnt let him sign back, that would show that no matter what, if you get in trouble life for you is over, so dont try. They are showing that as long as you do your time, you can get out and go back to life. And what about all the other animal abusers in this country? Stop focusing on one person and start doing something about the million other animals being hurt right now. Let it be. he did his time. now move on to other issues. Dont dwell.
Posted by: Richard at August 14, 2009 2:29 PMHe should be tortured.
No human being like that deserves a place on this earth.
Posted by: Josephine Luff at August 14, 2009 2:38 PMTo be remorseful you must admit fault! doesn't admit responsibility! According to ESPN,
Vick told a crowd of about 250 to "use me as an example for your dreams." and also told them that after accomplishing his goals he "allowed someone who didn’t have my best interests at heart to take all that away from me."
He didn't serve enough time and should not be allowed back in the NFL. I would say torture and murder is a little more than just "getting in trouble". Vick is SCUM.
There's a petition on Care2.com to ban him from playinging. I'll post the link.

Posted by: Jaime at August 14, 2009 3:32 PMif he is truly sorry which I believe he is only sorry he got caught. He should donate at least one half of his salary to all non-profit organizations that help animals. If not then I hope the rape stick gets used on him
Posted by: Carole at August 14, 2009 4:34 PMIf he is sincere, Michael Vick, through his work with HSUS and their programs with inner-city children, has the potential to spare a huge number of animals from suffering -- a number much larger than the number of animals he brutalized. As animal advocates, ending suffering should be our primary concern.
Posted by: MFR at August 14, 2009 5:00 PMI'm so completely disgusted. I have no words to explain how upsetting this is.
Posted by: Rebecca at August 14, 2009 5:05 PMI live in Philly & while I don't really pay attention to football, I was totally disgusted to hear that our team got the dog killer. WTF. I am so mad right now & really want nothing to do with the eagles. Even though he "did his time" there is no undoing the horrible things that he did. He's NOT sorry, he's just sorry he got caught. If he hadn't gotten caught, how many more dogs would've been harmed? ugh.
Posted by: rebecca at August 14, 2009 6:12 PMAnyone who harms animals, especially to that degree, deserves to rot in jail, and subsequently hell.
I will not watch anything NFL until Vick leaves-for good.
Posted by: Cassidy at August 14, 2009 7:02 PMPeople in the football industry do not care about what he did. All they want is money and fame for their team. I'm not surpriced.
Posted by: Brenda Ryleigh at August 14, 2009 10:03 PMVick is such a terrible excuse for a human being! He just gives me another reason to hate human beings.
Posted by: Paige at August 14, 2009 11:57 PMNobody wants him on their team. Poor Eagles fans. They ought to organize a boycott.
Posted by: Sofia Blue at August 15, 2009 1:50 AMI dont understand how they can sign him. He's beyond a disgrace as a human being. I am sure he is sorry for getting caught and that's it. He should have gotten more time and all the animals that he abused, tortured, killed, that should be a count against him for every animal that he hurt.
He basically should be in prison for the rest of his pathetic life. WHERE ON EARTH IS THE JUSTICE FOR ALL THE ANIMALS THAT HE KILLED. Maybe one day he will get his in the end.. I certainly hope so. He's beyond discusting.
Why cant the court make it so that a HUGE chunk of his salary goes to supppot animal shelters.. Now, that's a good idea. Cannot bring the dogs back, but make him accountable for what he did to the poor animals....
Posted by: Terrie at August 15, 2009 7:54 PMThis is disgusting since Donte Stallworth was suspended indefinitely and Vick, already out of prison, is going to make $1.6 million this year, and will have an option to make $5.2 million next year before he has to re-sign, only to make even more money.
Posted by: MJR at August 16, 2009 1:14 PMto bad those dogs dont get a seccond chance
Posted by: cayden at August 16, 2009 2:16 PMThe fact of the matter is it's not yours or PETA's say. The United States' Judicial system has seen the case through and there is no point in blabbering on about it.
Posted by: Sean at August 17, 2009 12:09 PMA monster like that shouldn't even be alive! If he can do that to poor defenseless animal, whats stopping him from killing a human being? I hope he gets dropped before the season is over with!
Posted by: Brittany at August 17, 2009 12:17 PMI think the NFL should have banned Michael Vick from football permanently. I think the NFL is sending the wrong message by allowing him to play professional football again. I do support the Human Society for teaming up with him. I believe Michael Vick still can still have a tremendous amount of influence on kids and others that still look up to him. They will listen to him when he says that dog fighting is cruel and inhumane. They will listen to him when he says what he did was wrong. He can become part of the solution not part of the problem has he has stated. I am not sure if he is truely sorry for what he did. I hope that he is. I think that will be determined over time. I think his second chance should be with the Humane Society and the community, not with the NFL.
