Summer Reading June 10, 2009

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 52 ) | TrackBack

Summer reading was always (OK, well, sometimes) a fun experience for me while in school. I didn't like feeling forced to read specific books, but I did enjoy getting some choice on the matter.

So now that the summer is here, we want to suggest some of our favorite animal rights books. Check it out!

Anyone who emails StreetTeam@peta2.com with a quick (at least 200 words, though) "book report" letting us know which book(s) you read and some details on what you learned and/or found particularly interesting about each will get 1,000 Street Team points!

Animal Liberation by Peter Singer
Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir by Dan Mathews
Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy by Matthew Scully
Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser
Free The Animals by Ingrid Newkirk
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (Rise Against fans, can you find the Appeal to Reason reference?!)
One Can Make A Difference by Ingrid Newkirk
The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights by Ingrid Newkirk
Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz
Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin

Why are there only nine suggestions instead of an even ten? Because we want you to comment with any other books you recommend to people! So comment below with whether or not you've already read any of these books and what your favorites are in addition to this list!

P.S. My non-animal rights recommendations are anything by John Steinbeck, Jhumpa Lahiri, or Khaled Hosseini.

P.P.S. Don't forget our new cookbook!

Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir by Dan Mathews is an awesome book. It's also really funny. Everyone here should read it :]

_The Ethics Of What We Eat_ by Peter Singer changed my life. It has the only really good argument for not eating fish that I have ever read (important because I come from a pescetarian family.)

It covers a lot more than vegetarianism, though, including organic food, pollution, sustainability, world hunger, and free trade products (like chocolate or coffee.) But by being vegetarian you can help all of these!

May I recommend Ingrid's "Making Kind Choices?" Her stories in this book are awe inspiring and there are lots of details and even recipes some I am willing to try in the future.

Making a Killing by Bob Torres is really good. It explores the relationship between capitalism, exploition, and animal abuse. Very intelligent man:-)

One of the options on my summer reading list for school is Fast Food Nation. I started reading the book after I saw the movie, and it just makes it easier for me to read because it's something that i am interested in.

Animal Farm by George Orwell. it's not about animal rights as such, but it definitely has a strong underlying message.

I love reading!

The Pig Who Sang To The Moon by Jeff Masson. This book is so sad and touching.

I can't wait to start reading these. I need a book for Honors English though. I learned about The Jungle in Social Studies.

Books for you guys to check out:

-most books by Jane Goodall are great reads. My fave is "Harvest for Hope"
-any vegetarian or vegan cookbook! They are books, after all :D
-Chew on This: the followup to Fast Food Nation
-Any animal experimentation books are good, many are available in a public or school library
-Get Political for Animals: shows you how you can influence a politician into choosing animal
welfare and rights in his or her campaigns
-"The Vegetarian Teen" is a great guide to live by as a veg*n teen nowadays. I found a couple in my library, you'll most likely find them as well :o)
-Of course, the cult classic, ANIMAL LIBERATION! I got the free one in Spanish, I'm around the first chapters of it :o) I'm glad I'm Hispanic and bilingual now X3

I'm reading Skinny Bitch right now. At first I couldn't understand why it was on this list, because it seems more like a weight loss dieting plan. But the chapters on why you shouldn't eat meat say it all!

I say read it!

Last book I've read is "Why experiments on animals harm humans" by C. Ray Greek and Jean Swingle Greek. It's not about animals rights but I think that this book is worth reading . And of course it's the best book for people who think that we couldn't live without vivisection. As for me it is full of very usefull information.

Slaughterhouse is a BRILLIANT book! Kinda the reason I'm a vegetarian...entirely riveting in the rawest form...

The Jungle was ungodly...read it a few years ago, horrified me to the core!

Chew On This was a good book, it was a more objective fast food nation but much easier to read. It was also by Eric Schlosser

Sad not to be able to buy those books D: Thus I'll see whether I find something alike in the local library (don't think to, though). Wish me luck!

I have a Skinny Bitch cookbook, which is amazing and hilarious!
I also just bought the Jungle. It's next on my reading list :)

I love The Jungle! By far one of my favorite books!

I recommend "An Introduction to Animal Rights: Your Child or the Dog" by Dr. Gary Francione, because it is pro- animal rights, not animal welfare.

Quick question - Do we HAVE to read one of these nine? I used my Street Team points to get "Making Kind Choices" by Ingrid Newkirk and I'd really like to write my book report on that book for the project. Thanks. =]

I read skinny bitch and dominion, they are both great reads!

I would definitely recommend Vegetarianism: A History by Colin Spencer. The book goes all the way back to ancient vegetarian movements throughout the world. It's great to read about vegetarianism as a historical movement and to feel connected to the past in such a profound and meaningful way.

You can read any animal rights book to get points, it doesn't have to be one listed here.

What about the book "The Longest Struggle" by Norm Phelps?
I'm reading it now and also "Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer...
When I rented "Animal Liberation" from my library i noticed PETA had donated it to my library! Thanks PETA for everything you do! I love you guys!

Animal Liberation is a powerful book, the first chapter was extremly hard to get through for myself. I would advise anyone who is emotional, or feels extremely passionate about the cruelties animal testing to be cautious.

How about "Thanking the Monkey". I don't know who it's by, and unfortunately I didn't finish it yet, but so far it's an awesome animal rights book!

Posted by: Lizzy at June 25, 2009 1:37 AM

I'm reading The Omnivore's Dilemma.

It's not really about animal rights or anything like that, but it does explain how food gets to our plates and exposes the truth behind meat and processed foods.

I would recommend it to anyone thinking of becoming a vegetarian. It makes you want to eat organically.

Deff gotta read "No More Bull!" by Howard F. Lyman. Lyman grew up on a cattle ranch and then inherited the family buisness before becoming a vegan. He's the guy whose responsible for Oprah's prommis to stop eating hamburgers and in this book he shows how animals are treated in factory farms and slaughter houses along with exposing some of the nutritional myths associated with meat.

It's a great read for anyone whose interested:)

I just finished reading Dominion by Matthew Scully. What an amazing book! From the safari hunts in Africa to the Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean to the factory farms in North Carolina, this book covers it all. I was surprised to learn that so many people really don't believe that animals can actually suffer. I thought it was a given that animals actually suffer and experience pain, but there is a whole thought process out there that says animals cant experience pain. How dumbfounding!

My favorite quote: "When a man's love of finery clouds his moral judgement, that is vanity. When he lets a demanding palate make his moral choices, that is gluttony. When he ascribes the divine will to his own whims, that is pride. And when gets angry at being reminded of animal suffering that his own daily choices might help avoid, that is moral cowardice."

If I were to reccomend any animal rights book to anyone, it would be 'Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the way we treat animals'

hey everybody!
Another great book on animal rights is 'Man vs Beast' by Robert Muchamore. It's an adventure book about undercover spies fighting an animal testing agency. I really enjoyed reading it.

The Ten Trusts by Jane Goodall and Mark Bekoff has a lot of great arguments against things like hunting and eating meat. And a lot of extraordinary stories about animals. It was a great read.

Posted by: Emily at July 5, 2009 2:24 AM

THE HEALTHY VEGETARIAN by Sri Swami Satchidananda is a great book. It teaches you how to live like Swami, who was healthy in every sense of the word. I love his writing too; he's very straightforward and easy to understand.

one of my schools summer reading required book is Fast Food Nation! I am so excited that, finally, people will be reading, and becoming educated about the things i've been telling them for years. And its on YOUR summer reading list, which makes it even more awesome(:

I really want to read "Dominion," and "Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer.
I recommend "Thanking the Monkey : Rethinking the Way we Treat Animals" by animal activist Karen Dawn for a shocking look into the areas in which animals are most exploited; for food, in labs, fur, entertainment, hunting...etc.

Omg I saw the movie "Fast food nation", and after I saw it i cried. It had a very very strong message, in fact i believe I found too. One is: Animals aren't ours to eat, and the 2nd was: If you don't know what goes into your food, then don't eat it. I liked it, yet I didn't like the obscene animal graphics. All in all, though, I don't regret seeing it.

Oh wow!
Great suguestions!
I'm gonna have to go pick them up :D

Im a little worried though, I'm VERY emotional when it comes to this topic, so some of the more graphic books might be too much for me to handle. D:

"the jungle", although slow at some parts, is a great book to open your eyes to not only animal, but human cruelty. If you like that, see the movie Food inc, and read Fast Food Nation, especially the slaughter house parts.

Posted by: Julia at August 6, 2009 5:17 PM

"67 Ways to Save the Animals", Anna Sequoia,

It tells you what to avoid,, examples of animal cruelty and ways to revolve it.

Give it a go ;]
