cats dogs euthanasia no kill
No one likes to think about euthanasia, and that's understandable. Unfortunately, it's a reality for so many dogs and cats. We recently posted a blog about our stance on euthanasia, and as a follow-up, I hope you will read the below post from PETA.
-Marta
PLEASE NOTE: There's a picture below that is very disturbing, but for people who are concerned about animal suffering and homelessness, it's important to face the tragic reality of the overpopulation crisis and its consequences. Animals can't afford to have people look away.
Her name was Big Girl, but there was almost nothing left of her. She was so still, so slight, and so cold to the touch that field workers thought that she was already dead. But the tiny 6-month-old pit bull was still alive. Barely.
Big Girl never knew the love and care that we wish every dog experienced; by the time we arrived, she had endured prolonged, incomprehensible agony. When we found her collapsed on the ground, she weighed less than the chain she was tied to. She had clearly been starved—she was a pile of bones and had raw, mostly hairless skin with absolutely no body fat. A veterinarian later told us that Big Girl's stomach contained nothing but dirt, leaves, a piece of corn cob with two kernels on it, and a piece of dry, caked fecal matter. Big Girl had been left to suffer for so long that she had begun to decompose. Four different generations of maggots were eating away at her body. When we gently peeled her off the ground, she moaned. She could not see us or hear us, but we hope she knew that we were there to help her.
We sent Big Girl off to heaven with kind words and a gentle lethal injection. We wished we could have ended her misery much, much sooner. Those who condemn open-admission animal shelters and organizations like PETA for having to euthanize sick, injured, dying, and unwanted animals must look closely at the source of the overpopulation crisis—people who breed animals, those who neglect and abuse them, and consumers who choose to buy animals from breeders and pet shops instead of adopting from their local animal shelter.
No one hates the ugly reality of euthanasia more than the shelter workers who hold the syringe. Sometimes, especially when animals have known no kindness and are suffering, the best that we can offer an animal like Big Girl, Asia, and others is a painless and dignified release from a world that showed them no love or compassion.
-Jeff Mackey, PETA
P.S. The man responsible for Big Girl's horrific condition (as well as that of another dog, who suffered from a vaginal prolapse) was charged and convicted for the condition of both dogs, and he was prohibited from owning animals.

Oh wow. I need to make a YouTube video about this, asap. Gotta get the truth out!
Posted by: Savannah Weaver at May 13, 2009 7:59 PMI agree. Peta doesn't kill animals. They just let them pass peacefully. The people who are against this are just... heartless. Some animals, sadly, can't be saved, and some people are just too stupid to realize that. If you have no reason to euthanize an animal, yeah, I have a problem, but if the animal is going to live the rest of it's life suffering, then the best thing you can do is let it go without anymore suffering.
Posted by: Harley at May 13, 2009 8:44 PMNeglectful humans,
pet overpopulation,
abusive owners...
but it's PETA's fault that animals must be euthanized...?
Most of the tilted truths regarding PETA's work is manufactured and spread by the Center for Consumer Freedoms...
how can one of the largest anti-animal/earth rights groups in the world dare criticize PETA?
Oh God D:
Posted by: chrystal at May 13, 2009 11:48 PMI completely agree with euthanasia. I think that it should always be a last resort, first vetenary care should be taken and animals hopefully rehomes, but when it's better for the animal i agree that a painless death is the most humane option. I just wish that it was legal for humans with terminal diseases and no chance of recovery, who would otehrwise die a slow and painful death.
Posted by: Sam at May 14, 2009 1:41 AMOmg, i dont see how anyone can treat an animal like this.
Posted by: Crystal at May 14, 2009 8:56 AMthat is so f*cking disgusting.
wow the owner of those dogs should have to suffer and die. just like those poor dogs.
:'(
that picture makes my stomach turn. it gives me goosebumps. how someone could do something like that to an animal blows my mind. it makes me sick. people who do things like that to animals should have the same sort of thing happen to them as punishment. i think its stupid the most they do is stop them from being able to own animals or they might go to jail for a couple months. its complete bull.
Posted by: Monica at May 14, 2009 10:44 AMughhh this pisses me off. people, take care of your pets! or dont get any at all... same with your kids, take care of then or dont open your legs.
the pic was horrible. we should euthanize the people that treat animals like this.
Posted by: hellcatmaggie at May 14, 2009 10:46 AMD=
If a animal is close to death, and the only way out is with Euthanasia, let them.. Its a peaceful way out. We wouldn't want a human that is inches away from death, in pain and moaning for death to arrive sooner..
Animals & Humans are the same..
Im doing more for animals. I started a group called Revolution Evolution. We are trying to get the state to add a tax to new housing that takes land away from animals , causeing an upclimb of road kills. We believe that this tax money should be used to add fences in these areas that will detour animals from crossing roads that have a high kill rate. We are also handing out Free car whistlers that chase the deer back into the woods. THE MISTREATMENT of ANIMALS HAS GOT TO STOP!! Humans need to start careing about this world and the animals. Neither belong to us!!!
Posted by: donnie schoonmaker at May 14, 2009 11:02 AMSometimes even the hardest you try can't save an animal, or person. rather than letting them suffer, euthanasia is the quickest and painless way to have them free of the misery they are getting put through.
It just sickens me that in our society's day and age with all our Human Rights etc...we are still letting these beautiful animals die....who where here before us!!!!
Unbelievably sad. I would never have thought an animal could withstand such abuse and still be alive. I don't think as many people who criticize PETA's stand on euthanizing would disagree that animals in such condition should be put down. I think it's more that if they don't "see" it or know about it it's easier to pretend that they aren't doing the same when they kill cows, chickens etc for the sake of a hamburger.
Posted by: Chana at May 14, 2009 11:13 AMEuthanasia is used in extreme cases by a lot of organizations. To those who believe that PETA is anti-euthanasia, study the picture of Big Girl, & then thank PETA for making the very difficult decision that most of us in the veterinarian & rescue world hate to make. Thank you PETA for your compassion & commitment to all animals.
Posted by: Shannon Schindler at May 14, 2009 11:19 AMin peta doing this, like many other things
we have to see things like the photos to understand
and it's horrible but it happens
some people are just oblivious, let them believe what they want
people can't not be allowed to have pets though cos it just won't happen
we just have to be more aware
and ready to own someone who hurts animals..
^ or just do something about it
thanks peta,
xx
PETA did the only humane thing for this dog, let her go to heaven at last and rest in peace. PETA does SO many things for animals, it's hard to believe there are still people out there hating on them. Thank you PETA, I'm sure Big Girl is in heaven loving life, finally.
Posted by: amanda at May 14, 2009 11:27 AMEuthanasia is to humane for ppl that treat animals like that!
Posted by: animaladvocate at May 14, 2009 11:41 AMHow would this dog's owner feel if this happened to them? Would the still neglect animals so harshly? Would they still beat and starve them to near death? I HATE people who do this to animals
Posted by: at May 14, 2009 11:41 AMwhen i see something like this, it makes me mad that people who treat dogs like this are first allowed to have pets in the first place, and i cant help but think how the treat they're children.
People who treat animals like this do not have empathy and as far as i am concerned deserve no less than what they gave.
Thank you for posting this.
I agree that sometimes the best and most merciful thing you can do for an injured, sick or abused animal is to put them to rest and out of pain. If anyone thinks the decision comes lightly, they need to think again.
It's just a shame humans don't have the same legal ways to end their suffering as well.
Posted by: Quinn Kelley at May 14, 2009 12:15 PMholy crap. That is terrible. That person should have gone to jail!!! i seriously agree with peta decisions here. my sister works at the regional shelter in georgetown texas and she has to put down dogs just because they dont have enough room for them.
Posted by: janson at May 14, 2009 12:21 PMOMG .. when i seen this picture i was terrified. It brought tears to my eyes. My friend next to me took one look and shook with fear and disgust. Some people are absolutly terrible to their animals ! That poor dog :(
Posted by: Candace at May 14, 2009 12:43 PMThis, made me cry. :(
I don't understand why Animals are treated the way they are being treated.
Its PATHETIC!
IT really is. :(
that is so, so sad. people who think this is OK.. man karma will get you. euthanasia makes me very sad but then again what else are humans supposed to do?! there are simply not enough homes for the millions of homeless animals each year and it breaks my heart. all i will ask is please everyone, do NOT breed or buy while homeless animals die. support animal shelters, and adopt from a shelter, SPCA, or humane society. please help these animals.. they did NOTHING to deserve this.
Posted by: katie at May 15, 2009 4:38 AMso unfair.. what did the dog do to deserve that? nothing. makes me so mad and sad.. to anyone who is reading this.. please look up "in hope, an animal shelter story" on youtube. it's very sad but very eye opening. it shows the true reality of what happens to animals because of people breeding their animals and not having them fixed.
Posted by: kay at May 15, 2009 4:45 AMpeople are disguting. When you have a choice between letting an animal suffer and die a painful death or shorten its suffering by a method that is really close with a deep sleep... how can people even question the stop of suffering?
my dog was having epileptic seizures, was going blind and was obviously sick (common disease with daschunds) we had NO choice but to put him to sleep.
what kind of heartless being would favor torture in the name of life...
We should treat animals just like we treat humans. With respect and love.
You know-whenever an animal comes to PETA's attention-it's always due to horrific abuse. How sad people have personal agendas (such as the meat industry) and would care less about the suffering of these poor animals under the tyranny of humans who do not hesitate to torture animals.
The cruelty of humans never ceases to amaze me-and they do it KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT THEY DO. So who is calling who an animal?
Thank God there is PETA who fights cruelty. And yes-sometimes you have to euthanize-when pain and suffering is beyond anything repairable. What other choice does one have?
Posted by: Luke Thomas at May 15, 2009 9:54 AMCan someone please explain to me why there are not harsher punishments for animal neglect and abuse?! What, this guy got a slap on the wrist and isn't allowed to own animals anymore?? Woop dee do, real harsh. You can abuse and neglect people and get harsh sentences so why is it not the same for animals?! They're living, breathing individuals also!
Posted by: at May 15, 2009 9:55 AMide rarther there be no annimals than have one annimal suffer
Posted by: QWERTY at May 15, 2009 10:08 AMWhat the heck is peoples problems? Do they get a euphoric feeling or something by abusing an animal? In my opinion, abusing a dog like that, is so much worse than how people even abuse themselves. Humans need to realize that we only have one life to live, and we're wasting that time, hurting animals, and going to jail for doing so. Grow up. PETA only does what is right, and if you don't agree then don't come here. They're not forcing you to look at anything, or do anything. They're just asking you to care.
Posted by: Taylor at May 15, 2009 10:20 AMThere's nothing wrong with what Peta did. They just gave animals the peace they deserve.
Posted by: Christian Madrogaba at May 15, 2009 1:39 PMaww (T_T)
Posted by: Elora at May 15, 2009 5:32 PMyea i agree with peta when it comes to euthenization i also like the note about the graphic image i was reading the article on this on the peta site and they didnt warn people about the graphics so people were like YOU NEED TO WARN PEOPLE ABOUT THAT blah blah blah its like if they warned people no one would look and read it and face the facts. Thats why i think anyone who chooses to eat meat at least needs to like wacth the videos and stuff of the slaughter houses thats why i normally give hunters more props then someone who just goes and buys dead carcasses pre pacakged in the store. Cause if they dont know what is going on or cant do it themselves then they shouldnt eat meat.
Posted by: Salena Gomez at May 15, 2009 8:44 PMThis was something that needed to be said. These animals are suffering and we can try to save them, but sometimes they're in too much pain and in far too bad a condition for us to do anything but euthanize them. The man that would treat not just 1, but 2 dogs like this deserves alot more punishment than what he got. Obviously, he doesn't care if he owns animals because when he does, he treats them like shit. There should be some serious jailtime for this kind of disgusting, disturbing animal abuse.
Posted by: Dani C. at May 16, 2009 8:05 AMSometimes it's just best for the animal. If it's never going to walk again and unable to simply reach food and water without tremendous pain, the animal, if they could speak would most likely tell you to just end it.
Posted by: at May 16, 2009 8:13 AMi think people that abuse animals should suffer the same pain that they inflicted on the animals they abused and that they then should be arrested and placed in prison for life without the possibility of parole or be sentenced to death if they took the life of an animal!
Posted by: fahrnaz at May 16, 2009 10:09 AMI agree with putting dogs down if there is no chance of them liveing life with out pain and suffering.
The only thing i dont agree with it putting dogs down if they were ment to fight. They still have a chance. But, there life is made to avoid dogs. The only time they should be put down is if they cant controll themselfs and they are physicly in pain.
Posted by: Samie at May 16, 2009 1:52 PMOMG that is so sad. :'-(
They should make the owner suffer as much as the dogs did!
:(
rip big girl
if we could all just think the same and stop poaching, abusing and testing animals, we could save so many
I don't agree with Peta on much, but when it comes to euthanasia, I don't think there's much to say. Its a necessary action. Animals like the one above are a sad example of the brutality of a mindless fiend of an owner. When it comes to shelters, you can't just let every animal live until it dies, either. When you've got animals coming in all the time and you don't have space for them, you have to get rid of some of the older ones that have been there too long. Its only fair. No one wants to do it, but it is necessary. So, Peta, instead of attacking food processors and growers, why not attack people who breed pets? Why not support the shelters more, instead?
Posted by: Zach at May 16, 2009 3:16 PMI hate all those people who are against peta for this. They don't realize that it is helping the animal move on so they dont have to feel pain. They take things too literally, yes peta saves animals and yes peta must put them down but in the end its better that Big Girls life was ended surrounded by people who were trying to HELP, not alone on the ground.
i
Posted by: Sam at May 17, 2009 5:31 PMWTF is wrong with people! At first when I saw this picture I was so pissed off. Then I read on and it said she was ALIVE. Now I was just F'in crying. jeez, i threw my glass cup of water at the window and it broke. oops. people are sick. dont leave the dog for goodness sakes. at least give it to the shelter. words cant describe how i feel right now. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I feel like punching something.
Posted by: Julie at May 17, 2009 9:30 PMwow wee. i agree one hunrdred percent with peta on this one guys. that poor thing shouldnt have suffered like it did and im glad peta got there b4 she died in agony!! i love animals....
Posted by: Kalyn gaston at May 18, 2009 7:17 AMNever have I seen such fowl treatment towards an animal! how could someone just LEAVE an animal with nothing to the point they decompose?! I feel like puking(on that person who left her). But I'm glad she's at peace now.

I'm completely with peta on this. It's made me angry to see facebook groups and stuff saying that peta 'kill animals'. I 100% agree with euthanasia and think you guys give dignity to those animals to whom a painless and peaceful death is a relief they could never have hoped for otherwise.
