peta2 at Colleges in the South, Then Back Up North! May 1, 2009

Hey hey!

How's it going out there in blogland? Your peta2 Road Crew is checking in to highlight the great moments from our last week on our spring college tour. We've been crossing the country this spring and hitting up universities to help inform students about different animal rights issues.

We finished up our time in the South at South Carolina State University and two campuses in North Carolina (Fayetteville State and UNC Wilmington) with tremendous success. We worked on our McCruelty campaign while in the South to get the word out about the devastating practices that occur on farms where McDonald's purchases its chickens in the US. These farms actually hang chickens upside down and slit their throats while they're still fully conscious. Terrible right?! All we're asking is for McDonald's to demand its suppliers move to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK) which would be less cruel to our chicken friends. Of course you don't have to be a college student to sign our petition too, you just have to click here!

We headed up to Ohio next to get the word out about KFC and why the lovely college of the University of Toledo shouldn't be associated with it. KFC has a long history of refusing to demand basic animal welfare practices from the farms that supply chickens to them. So we have a long history of letting them know this is not OK. KFC suppliers sear the beaks—which is a hot bed of nerve endings—off of baby chickens with a hot blade and put grown chickens in scalding water tanks, and this all happens while they are conscious and can feel pain. We had an amazing student group, Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (SETA), help us out with LOTS of success! We'll keep you posted on the progress and if UT decides to remove KFC from their campus.

A tradition for us on the Road Crew is something called "Ice Cream Monday." Basically every Monday night we make sure to take time to eat as much vegan ice cream as possible. It's a great (and delicious!) way to unwind after a long day of standing up for our animal friends. There are plenty of different varieties and brands of vegan ice cream to chose from, so we recommend trying them all!

We're finishing out our Spring College Tour by hitting up the University of Rochester and we'll have full details of our adventures there right here next week. Have a good week everybody and thanks for reading!

Keep rockin'!

Joey
