Prom Cheat Sheet! April 14, 2009

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 46 ) | TrackBack

Prom season is upon us, and you know we want to help you find a cruelty-free look from head to toe! Are we going to buy everything for you? Heck no! We're not made of money, people. However, I put together this little prom cheat sheet, peta2-style, to help you out.

Dresses/Suits

Avoid it: Silk—it's basically tons of dead insects. Silk is derived from the silkworm, and once in the pupae stage, most silkworms are steamed or gassed alive in their cocoons to make silk. It's hard to imagine that anyone could feel beautiful covered in dead insects on prom night ...
And guys, ditch the itchy old wool suits. What is this—1979?

Buy it: Satin dresses made out of polyester or nylon. Tulle is also a really popular choice—you know, usually the bottom part of your dress that makes you feel like a princess—and it's almost always made from a plant. As for suits—Pulin recommends polyester, cotton, or "a nice microfiber."

Nugget is stoked to have a date who is all about being cruelty-free!

Make-up

Avoid it: Products tested on animals. More and more companies are putting the fact that they don't test right there on the label—so keep an eye out for it! If you're still unsure, check out our guide to shopping cruelty-free.

Buy it: Cruelty-free products, of course! If you've got the money and the time, you can always go to a make-up counter and get your make-up done (fun!). Since more and more companies are ditching animal testing than ever before it's ridiculously easy to find cruelty-free companies. Try MAC, Urban Decay, Clinique, or Revlon. To find others, our guide to shopping cruelty-free works for that too.

Hair Styling/Personal Care Products

Avoid it: Animal testing, again! There's no need to subject an animal to cruel testing just to make sure you smell nice for your date—especially when so many alternatives exist.

Buy it: You guessed it—cruelty-free options! Keep your pearly whites in picture-ready form with Tom's of Maine toothpaste and keep yourself from sweating all over your date with Mitchum deodorant. And to keep your hair in place for all that dancing, try products by Giovanni (all products available in most major drugstores).

To complete your night, all you need is the perfect date (and/or an awesome group of friends) and you'll be set! If you put together a great cruelty-free look and would like to get some Street Team points for it, e-mail your photo to us at StreetTeam@peta2.com and we'll give you 1,500 points. And be sure to post your cruelty-free look on your Facebook or MySpace (like you weren't gonna upload tons of prom photos anyway) so all your friends can see just how easy it is to be cruelty-free.

Have fun! Maybe you'll score a kiss like Nugget did!

"And guys, ditch the itchy old wool suits. What is this—1979?"

Hey thats not cool. 1979 must of been nice and quaint compared to our get up and go go modern world of today.

And even though wool isn't needed with the alternatives that are available how again was wool linked to 1979? :)

Just because some things say not tested on animals,
many companies would rather pay the false advertising fees, than deal with half their customers not buying their products because they do test on animals.

I can't go to prom, and it is my senior year!
My job is crappy, working two-three days a week if I am lucky at a 8.75prhr rate. Trying to save up for a prom dress, and shoes, and ass. and all the above that you need to look good on prom, I can't afford. I am 18 and paying bills, and prom is so out of the question for me. BUT! I am always cruelty-free. It is my way of life. But everyone else going, HAVEFUN!

There is such a thing as Vegan silk, they wait until the silk worm... well moth now leaves the cocoon then boil it. :] no death involved..... just a long wait.

These are some great tips.
It's a good thing that I had a formal last year and I had a satin dress and made sure when I got my makeup done, it wasn't animal tested.

Kasey,
There is an organization called Becca's Closet, started by a girl who wanted everyone to be able to attend prom. They will help you buy a prom dress. Check it out at www.BeccasCloset.org. Hope it helps.
Cheers,
Glenn

I wish I'd read this before I went to my Year 12 ball (I'm Australian, we call it a ball here, not a prom) because my dress is made out of silk and I never made the connection :(

I hope my boyfriend's suit wasn't made out of wool, but it's not like he'd care anyway, he thinks vegetarians and animal rights activists in general are all hypocrites because we apparently all care more about animals than people >:|

Naww, nugget is so cute, can't believe I ever ate him! Eugh! Vegetarian pride :) I've been a vegetarian for five years and I've never regretted it for a second :) Cruelty free!

But I digress. I hope one day silk is a thing of the past, and EVERYTHING is cruelty free. Give it a couple of hundred years, and people will be saying, God, can you believe people used to wear and eat animals? How disgusting!

Love you Nugget :)

i bought TRESemme hair products since they aren't tested on animals and my mom ran out of her products so she used mine. she said they work better than the animal tested ones so now she's buying products that aren't tested on animals INCLUDING MAKPE UP :D which makes me feel so cool. like i really made a difference in some way.

WOAH.... de ja vu! ^
