Free Stuff Friday: Vegan Soul Kitchen April 10, 2009

Posted by Tiffany Wright | Permalink | Comments ( 85 ) | TrackBack

Is your stomach rumbling right now? If not, it will be in a second because, this week, we're giving you the chance to win Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine written by award-winning eco-chef Bryant Terry!

This cookbook contains 150 amazingly delicious vegan recipes inspired by many traditional soul food dishes like fried okra and grits. Bryant uses fresh, healthy ingredients, and absolutely no animal products, to create recipes for everything from drinks and appetizers to soups and sides. My own personal favorites include Bryant's Jamaican veggie patties, black-eyed pea fritters with hot pepper sauce (pictured below), and candied sweet potatoes—the only way to eat 'em, if you ask me.

And Bryant couldn't forget dessert! Every good cook knows no meal is complete without it. I recommend you finish yours off with Bryant's chocolate-pecan pudding pie. It's mm mm SO goooood!

For your chance to win a copy of Bryant Terry's Vegan Soul Kitchen, comment below with some creative names for classic soul food dishes; For example, Fried 'Al Green' Tomatoes or Motown Mustard Greens. The three people who come up with the most creative names will be chosen as our winners. We'll accept entries until April 20th, and winners will be chosen and notified the same day.

Just so you know ... by commenting here, you're acknowledging that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi. Here are some names with some veggie lyrics :)

* DO YOU LOVE ME apple dumplings? *
VEGGIE LYRICS... You broke mky heart, cause I wouldn't eat not meat,
you didn't even want me around,
and now you're back, to let me know,
that you're a vegan now!
Do you love meat? (No, let them MOO)
Do you love fish? (No, let them groove)
Do you love poultry (do you love it),
No, not anymore (no more, No More!)
Watch me now, oh, work work,
Workin for PETA,
work, work, work for animal rights,
work work, cause they all got souls now,
work!
I eat mashed potatoes (smashed potatoes),
Lemon twist (cherry twist),
Baby cabbage, Baby beans,
MMMMM, and I LIKE IT like this (yeah, I like it like this)
Tell them, tell Them, Tell Them... I'm a vegan, and I love it! I'm a vegan, yeah I love that stuff, I'm a vegan, mock-meat tastes great, Now that I don't kill (don't kill, won't kill).

* LET'S GET IT ON the table black-eyd peans! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... We are all animal people with so much to give, Understand me, PETA, since we got to be, let's live and let live, no more killing no more.

*WHAT'S GOING ON in the kitchen vegetarian chili*
VEGGIE LYRICS... Lambie, Lambie, there's too many of you crying, Piggie, Piggie, Piggie, there's far too many of your dying, You know we've got to find a way to keep them from killing you today. Chickey, Chickey, we don't need you on the plate. Death is not the answer, vegan meat tastes really great! You know we've got to find a way to get folks vegetarian today.

* HEAT WAVE Louisian red beans and rice! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... Whenever I'm with them (animals) something inside gets me burnin' and i'm filled with desire (to save them)... could it be an angel in me, saving animals is how it's got to be, it's like a heat wave, burning in my heart, stop killing them creatures--it tears me apart.

* HOW SWEET potatoes IT IS TO BE LOVED BY YOU (yam dish)! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... I needed protection from someone's arms and there you are! I needed someone to understand I'm alive and feeling, and there you are! With sweet love and emotion, you are full of such devotion, and I want to stop and THANK YOU PETA, I need to stop and THANK YOU PETA! How sweet it is to be loved by PETAns.

* MY GIRL's peach pie! *
VEGGIE LYRICS...I've got loving on a rainy day,
when it's hot outside we like to "baah" and "neigh"... I guess you'd say, who has made me feel this way? PETA, VEGANS, PETAns, talking bout my humans -- PETAns!

* SHOTGUNless mock-chicken croquettes *
VEGGIE LYRICS... NO MORE shotguns, NO MORE shooting for fun. No more shooters, no more hunting, no more killing for fun! Hey!
Put on your PETA shirt, and lets protest now,
I say get yourself a banner, and we'll stop it right now. No more shotguns... no more shooting them creatures, no more shotguns, stop the killing right now!

* SHOP AROUND veggie lasagna *
VEGGIE LYRICS... When I was growin' up, Momma called me by her side... said child you're growin up now, time you learned the facts of life...
Just because you've become a young person now,
Still some things that we don't comprehend now,
before you eat some "meat" on a plate now,
make sure no creature died (was killed) for that meal now. My Momma told me, you better shop around! Still some things that I want you to know now, gotta watch where you shop and eat at now... can't eat no meat or fish, no-no now,
look for Veggie Restaurants and so now... my Momma told me, you better shop around--oh yeah now, you better shop around.

* COME SEE ABOUT ME carrot cake! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... I've been crying, cause i'm sad (for ewe). Smiles have all turned to tears,
poor little animals full of fear... so won't you hurry, come on now, see about PETA, come see about PETA.
I've given up the chicken, for you,
I've given up the beef now too
I have peace now, I find,
since I don't eat nothing, with eyes.
No more crying baby for ewe,
no more dying baby for you (all animals),
so won't you hurry, come on now, see about PETA. Come see about PETA. Just be a vegan baby, just be a vegan baby now :)

* BABY I NEED YOUR LOVIN coconut cake! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... Humans, we need your love and, got to have all your love and, Humans we need your love and, got to have all your love. They say it's a sign of weakness, for a lamb to beg, but weak I'd rather be, than dead so please don't kill me, cause lately I've been losin' sheep. Humans, we need your love and, got to show us some love and, humans we need your love and, plese don't kill us--give lovin'.

* YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH (punch drink)! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... That time I saw you walking by,
I wanted to ask you, but was too shy,
I was thinking so hard that you must have had a hunch, so you came up and asked if like PETA, and you beat me to the punch.
Yeah, I'm a vegetarian, and you beat me to the punch.

* FIRST I LOOK AT THE PURSE vegan mock meatballs*
VEGGIE LYRICS... Some folks look at their eyes,
some folks look at their nose, some folks look at their size, me I look at the NO's...
I don't want NO living creature,
I don't want something that died,
killing it makes me even creepier,
All I care about is Is it live?
so first I look at the NO's,
then I look at the label,
can't eat me no fellow being,
won't put it on the table.
First I look at the NO's
(NO beef/cow,
NO chicken/poultry,
NO pig/pork,
NO living creatures!)

* MY GUY's favorite green-bean casserole! *
VEGGIE LYRICS... Nothing you can say will tear me away from caring, oh no.
Nothin you can do cause I'm stuck like glue to PETA, oh yeah.
I'm sticking up for animals like stamps on a letter, for birds of a feather, let's stick together. I'm telling you from the start, we can't be torn apart, we're PETA.
Nothing you can do to make me untrue, won't eat meat, oh no. Nothing you could buy, won't eat no flesh or eye, won't let die (or kill). I gave my word and swear and promise, to be faithful and I'm gonna, you best be believing I won't be eating no creatures.

* OOO BABY BABY collard green soup *
VEGGIE LYRICS... I did them wrong, up until today, didn't know they're tortured--what a price to pay! They're dying! Ooooh, baby baby... oooh, lambie, ducky. Mistakes, I know I made a few, didn't know they suffered, got mistreated too... I'm cryin. Oooh, cowey, fishey... oooh, piggie, crabby. Now I feel guilty, and was such a dope. But now I won't stop trying, and won't give up HOPE, cause I believe, one day we'll all get here, whisper "no more dying, no killing, no more fear"... No dying... Ooooh... piggie, lambie... Ooohh, Ducky, Cowey... Oooooh, oooh.

* STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE mock chicken noodle soup *
VEGGIE LYRICS... Stop in the name of love!
Don't kill no animals!
Stop in the name of love!
Don't do creatures no harm.
Think it over, think it over.
I know of your hunting trips and fights,
I've even seen a gun once or twice,
But is that meat you're eating,
worth more than the life I'm protecting?
Next time before you grab your gun,
and rush off to the forest,
think it over,
think it over.
Just STOP in the name of love,
before you take a life,
stop in the name of love,
before you kill a deer.
Stop in the name of life,
before you shoot that bear,
stop in the name of life,
before your kill that fish.
Think it over (it could be you), think it over (they're breathing too), think it over (their eyes looking at you), think it over (they feel pain too), think it over.

* DANCING IN THE STREET african fruit slush *
VEGGIE LYRICS... Callin out around the world, let's get ready for a brand new beat! Awareness is here and the time is right, no more kiling in the streets! They're living in the forests, streams, and fisheries, and on the meadows! All we need is conscience, sweet conscience, let's get conscious everwhere. They'll be dancing, playing, BAAHing and NAAYing, and prancing in the streets. It doesn't matter what kind of hair, fur, or skin, just that they're there... so come on every lamb, every cow, every fish, let's move it now, we'll be prancing, prancing in the street!

* YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE sweet potatoe pie *
VEGGIE LYRICS... I need love, love, so keep me alive. So don't you kill me, just let me have my life. And humans said they won't kill no more,
cause they all can save lives... and now it's so easy, they've got vegan mock meat on their plates. They're so full of love, and we don't have to wait, now we trust and don't fear them, their hearts are no longer filled with hate. That's Great!

* AIN'T TOO PROUD TO BEG for that peach pie *
VEGGIE LYRICS... I know you wannt eat that, but I refuse to let you kill. If I have to beg or plead for some sympathy I don't care cause they mean that much to me. Ain't too proud to beg for their lives, don't you kill them, oh no. Ain't too proud plead baby baby, please don't eat that now, let's go! (get some veggie burgers instead!).

Ok, have you ever had Jamaican Curry?
Well I don't know if you classify that as Soul Food...maybe Caribbean?
Ok, well that's the "soul food" I grew up on.

So I'd name the Dish "Flag Rice"
It would have Rice.
Green Peas - sweet ones.
Black beans
and Yellow Curry!

It looks like the Jamaican Flag!!

or "Al Green-beans" and "Smokebeans Robinson" for smoked green beans. "James Brown-sugar candied yams"

THANKS for the fun giveaway.
