Doughnuts! Doughnuts! Doughnuts! April 15, 2009

I am excited beyond words. I think these photos will show you why I say that ...

Yes, homemade vegan doughnuts! Our buddy Maggie made them, and since you're wondering, here's her recipe to make your own!

You will need:
1 or 2 cans of store bought biscuits (depending on how many you want. One can usually makes about ten doughnuts and we suggest the off-brand flaky layers).
Cooking Oil (canola, safflower, vegetable, whatev)
1 Medium sized pot
1 Chopstick
Any sugary substance you would like to put on them

Directions:
Turn on stove to medium heat
Pour oil into medium sized pot about an inch and a half deep
While the oil is heating, open can of store bought biscuits and poke hole into middle of each biscuit
When oil is hot, drop biscuits into oil 2-3 at a time
Use chopstick to make definite hole in the middle while cooking.
Lift edge to confirm brown on one side and flip until brown on the other (with chopstick, of course). This usually takes like 2 minutes.
Remove from pot.
Repeat for all doughnuts!

Once they have finished cooking, you can flavor by dipping them in cinnamon and sugar (Maggie's personal fav), powdered sugar, icing them with cheap icing and sprinkles, jelly, chocolate syrup, etc. There really is no end to the possibilities of things to stick on top of a doughnut!

DISCLAIMER: They get super hard the day after, so we would recommend only making however many you are going to eat at once unless you like dipping them in coffee to soften them up!

Being vegan is easy. What kind of doughnuts do you want to make? Make sure you send us your photos!
