Know Anyone at Sea Kitten High School? January 7, 2009

No? Well, maybe that's because Sea Kitten High School doesn't exist ... yet.
Today, our very own Dan Shannon wrote letters to Whitefish High School in Montana and Spearfish High School in South Dakota, asking the schools to change their names to Sea Kitten High School, to reflect the gentle nature of their current marine namesakes.
In case you're not hip to sea kittens, let me catch you up to speed: We want to give fish a break. People don't seem to like fish very much, considering how terribly they're treated. By calling fish sea kittens, we're hoping people start thinking of fish a little differently—and remember the fact that sea kittens feel pain just as animals like the purring kittens we share our homes with do.
Dan writes, "Most parents would never dream of spending a family weekend torturing kittens, but hooking a fish through their mouths and pulling them through the water is just as painful as hooking a cat's mouth and dragging him or her behind a car. We're hoping that this name change will encourage people young and old to start treating these gentle 'kittens of the sea' with respect—and show them the kindness that they deserve."
Think about it: A name change is a great way to get people thinking about an issue.
Let me know your thoughts. Would you want to go to Sea Kitten High School?

This is the stupidest thing PETA has ever done.
Posted by: barb at January 7, 2009 3:07 PMIf a high school like that ever existed... I would love to go!
Posted by: Alexandra at January 7, 2009 3:11 PMI would LOVE to go to the Sea Kitten High School! ^ ^ It sounds uber cool! Hopefully the cafeteria is vegan though!
Posted by: Twiggy at January 7, 2009 3:21 PMSomehow Sea Kitten High School sounds like a version of 90210 but with fish....and I would watch said show if such show existed.
"All the drama teenagers go through.....as fish."
Posted by: Robert Lee at January 7, 2009 4:48 PMI would love to go there if Cobra Starship was doing the announcements :P lol
Posted by: Paige at January 7, 2009 7:50 PMI live in Montana near Whitefish and I love sea kittens! I think it would be a great way to support the cause.
Posted by: Andrea H. at January 7, 2009 10:02 PMi love peta2 as well as sea kittens but this is just bloody ridiculous, no one's going to take it seriously and it just makes the animal rights message look like a joke.
Posted by: Lottiee at January 8, 2009 12:03 PMI would love to go to a school like that!
Posted by: erika at January 8, 2009 1:09 PMyoud be surprised how seriously people can take his, if you get enough people in on this a school could consider it. i think it would be revolutionary if a school did this, who says that a schools name needs to be serious and stern.
Posted by: meagan at January 9, 2009 9:19 AMI would love to go to SeaKitten High School!!!! Right now i go to Cabot High School.
Posted by: Katrina at January 9, 2009 11:53 AMWhitefish and Spearfish high schools are named after the towns they are in. It would be more appropriate to change the town names. But why stop there? There could me Sea Kitten Police and Sea Kitten Fire Departments. Could you imagine having an emergency and being rescued by the all-mighty sea kittens?
Come on now! Fish are fish! You have a point of trying to compare them to kittens in that fish feel pain, but we eat fish and other animals for sustanance. Try coming up with a different way to catch fish to prove your point. Right now you are trying to stop people from using hooks to catch fish. Its NOT going to work by calling them "sea kittens". I speak for many people when I say that you are all being laughed at!
Posted by: Stephanie at January 9, 2009 12:38 PMFirstly neither Whitefish MT, nor Spearfish SD, are anywhere near the sea. Geographically, "Sea Kitten" is a misnomer. Secondly, a whitefish is a bottom dwelling trash eating freshwater fish. So physiologically, "Sea Kitten" is the dumbest thing you could call a fish in the Rocky Mountain west. Thirdly, hooking a fish in the mouth is completely different from hooking a mammal (kitten) in the mouth. Mostly because they're fish, and they don't have any feelings. There are far fewer nerves in a fish mouth than in the mouth of a mammal. Fourthly, fishing is not only a longstanding tradition and way of life for many Native American tribes as well as the descendents of settlers but a key part of conservation. Many non-sportsmen and women are ignorant of conservation efforts put forth by anglers and hunters. Nearly all wetlands conservation funds come from either a 7% factory tax imposed on fishing rods, reels, line, lures, flies etc. (as mandated by the Dingle-Johnson Act) or fishing licenses. So by sustainably harvesting "Sea Kittens," both freshwater and marine, anglers strengthen wetlands, rivers, streams, and marine habitat, for all Americans to enjoy.

Posted by: John at January 11, 2009 10:34 PMI Live in SD, about 45 minutes from Spearfish. No One here is taking this seriously which makes my job much harder when trying to be a valid member of peta. I explain to them the point of our campaign but the message will not go through. Simply because Spearfish was named after traditional native american ways. The people of South Dakota are taking this the wrong way and are actually OFFENDED by this...
oh well.
I'll just keep pushing the message
WOW! When I heard this one the news I actually laughed out loud. This is one of the dumbest things PETA has ever tried to do. It's not like fishermen are out to torture the fish! Without allowing people to fish, the population would drastically increase causing most fish to die of overpopulation or starvation. It's just like saying "hey lets not allow hunting anymore so that all the deer can run around and be happy...until the population gets so high that all the deer are getting annihilated by passing cars on the highway. Also renaming a high school is not going to change the way people think about fish, it's only going to make opposing high schools and others in the community to use the name as a laughing stock. Just imagine...."tonight the fighting yellowjackets prepare to compete against the mighty sea kittens" lol that would be so embarrasing for ANYONE on that team! We live in Montana where most everyone here hunts and fish; trying to stop the outdoorsmen from doing what they love, is like trying to get a vegan that's a member of PETA to eat a burger! PETA, stop trying to force your beliefs onto others and get on with your own lives!
Posted by: Amanda at January 12, 2009 3:29 PMI live in Whitefish Montana and this is a massive joke. People are talking about it everywhere and all I hear is "Wow is PETA Retarded? They must be. They are not trying to protect animals anymore. They are just doing stupid campaigns." That is seriously all we hear. We here in Whitefish Montana are apart of P.E.T.A. People Eating Tasty Animals that is!!!
Posted by: Eddie at January 12, 2009 6:37 PMThe Sea Kittens. Come on who in there right mind would want to be a sea kitten. I mean Who do you play sports for, Oh the sea kittens. What in the world is peta thinking. People eating tasty animals right.
Posted by: Jonathan at January 12, 2009 10:26 PMWhatever, man, the mighty Sea Kittens are gonna purr your team's ass into the ground!
Agreed this is one of PETAs many bad campaign moves. I always purchase vegan and eat a 99% vegan diet, but please!
Posted by: at January 13, 2009 10:30 AMWhitefish thrives on tourism. The whole town is beautiful and they take it seriously. I don't think a town like that is going to rename their High School "Sea Kitten High." I think animal rights activists need to take themselves more seriously if they want everyone else too.
Posted by: Jay at January 13, 2009 12:06 PMSERIOUSLY, I don't know who's socks you people are smoking. But quit this dumb stuff based on feelings , cuteness and fluffiness. I think it is great that we have all you fellas like you fight and believe for the environment, the animal kingdom and against pollution and leaner living.
But how far fetched from life itself will it take you? Are you going to remove wolf's (alot of outdoors people would like it removed completely), thing of all the trauma a wolf or bear causes to it's pray when it is about to be killed.
Doesn't matter what you call it, it is what it is. We eat fish, meat and vegetables.....deal with it, it is a choice like some of YOU choose to be "vegans". We don't come knocking on your doors campaigning for you to eat meat. Or show up in our birth suit campaigning for you eating meat or wearing fur.
If you as a Peta member is out jogging in grizzly country.....doesn't matter if you think fish should be called sea kittens, you are in "his/hers" country (the grizzly), and your arse will be toast if the bear has a bad day, is hungry or little ones to care for.
Case is, us that are hunters or fishers are the best preserver. We want to come back to all this pure nature and beauty year after year, leave it to our children and grandchildren. But is also has to be respected and kept at a distance. An animal doesn't abide by human laws of what it thinks is pretty or cute. In the law of creation everything has a purpose and its place, come think native American's have the best philosophy regarding nature. "We do not own or posess this land, but we are merely guests that we can harvest the plentiful and leave it as undisturbed as we found it".
Whitefish and Spearfish will still keep their names, now go work on some "real" issues like preserving more habitat for wildlife and keeping Californians where they belong.....in California. They more than any other perhaps have destroyed wildlife habitat by buying up all the best prime land in this state for their house on a mountain top.
Posted by: Naturelover in MT at January 14, 2009 11:28 AMHey everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to voice your opinion on this! Sending these letters was a tongue-in-cheek way for us to get people thinking about how "sea kittens" are treated - and it's working. People are talking about fish and fishing more than ever.
We do realize it's unlikely the schools will change their names, but there's no harm in asking. :o)
Posted by: Marta at January 14, 2009 11:42 AMAbsolutely not. First of all, the name change is the most ridiculous proposal I've ever heard of. Whitefish High School (close to the town of Whitefish, MT) is nowhere near the sea, and the animal it's named after is neither a sea creature nor anywhere related to a catfish. You want to dishonor an animal? Replace it with a stupid figment of some protein-deficient extremist's imagination.
Secondly--the fact that this was actually a news item in our local paper is a deplorable display of poor journalism. Find something more worthy to write about!
Posted by: Joy at January 15, 2009 10:20 AMWhat a waste. NO. The school would get mocked to no end. This is R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S
Posted by: Amanda at January 16, 2009 6:13 PMSea kittens, Ha! How would you like to play on that football team. This is amazingly stupid. The quote "Fish are food, not friends" comes to mind. I think my son **if I had one** would be disgusted if I told him I spent a day up at the lake slaughtering Sea Kittens... he might even grow to hate me. Dumbest idea I've ever heard
Posted by: Obi_Jer_Kenobi at January 18, 2009 10:52 PMPeople are definately talking about it. Talking about how retarded PETA is.
Posted by: Jason at January 20, 2009 2:29 PMReally......???? There are way more important things to be discussed.
Posted by: Jamie at January 20, 2009 8:49 PMYou know what? If fish are just like cats, maybe I'll go eat a cat sometime. They should taste the same.
PETA, fish don't have the same nervous qualities, and when you live in an environment where you could very well end up eating the remains of your bretheren, I don't think that mourning over dead is likely. Pull your head out and take a look. And think for gods sake.
This is ridiculous... I live near Whitefish and this is flat out stupid. If they are about changing the school name then why are they not making a big deal about school mascots?? It's so dumb, they don't mean anything by naming their school Whitefish High School... it's the town name for crying out loud. These people need to get a grip and a new hobby cause the one that they have is stupid!!
Posted by: Goodness gracious at January 22, 2009 6:22 PMYou people are sick!
Posted by: Bob at January 23, 2009 6:52 PMI live in Montana and to all you Peta people the people in Montana hunt and fish for the most part and guess what we are genetically designed to eat meat so stop this nonsense we don't want to change the school name.
YGTBSM Marta. The collective IQ of you and everyone at PETA must be a single digit. Why don't all of you make at least a feeble attempt to become PRODUCTIVE members of society.
Posted by: Aldo at February 4, 2009 8:38 AMi saw this in the missoulian a while ago and thought it was a joke. now i realize that even if i agree with most things PETA is about, im still listening to a bunch of idiots. changing a name doesnt change beliefs. oh, and the towns name is whitefish, why not change that name?
Posted by: Emil at February 9, 2009 9:56 PMThis is the most outrageous thing I have heard. I graduated from Spearfish. Its been called the Spartans since the early 1900 its a Tradition. You think its going to help the Sea Kittens by making kids that go to Spearfish High School get teased. Hey we have a town in SD called White Cloud we should change that name too because its not fair to the grey clouds. This is just a horrible way to get publicity. NEXT!
Posted by: Chris at February 16, 2009 5:14 AMPETA, come on!!!
I'm a vegetarian. And I'm also anti-fur...
But SEA KITTENS? REALLY?!
This has got to be the most retarded thing yet.
Haha, I could see it now, "AT THE HOME SIDE IS THE FIGHTING CARDINALS AND ON THE VISITOR SIDE IS THE MIGHTY SEA KITTENS!!!"
Not gonna happen, plus it's really stupid. And if you DO your research you'll come to find out fish really have no feelings.
Hahahaha... "Yeah, so you go to Bowie. You're a jackrabbit." "Yeah I am. You go to Sea Kitten High. *snickers* You're a sea kitten."
FLAT OUT GAY AND LAME.
PETA, I'm sorry but you epically fail.
