When You See A Fur Coat, Speak Up! November 25, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 187 ) | TrackBack

There's possibly nothing more abhorrent than seeing someone in a full-length fur coat. Every time I see someone in a fur coat, I ask them if it's real, and then proceed to drop some knowledge about the industry which kills animals by gassing, trapping, drowning, and electrocution. What do you do when you see someone wearing fur?

(This photo is from something I did a few years ago in NYC)

...So now let me tell you the story of this past Saturday morning.

I was sitting there doing some work and enjoying some soy hot chocolate at the local coffee shop.
These two couples came in.
One woman was wearing a full-length fur coat.
She sat down right in front of me!
I asked if it was real.
She said "no." (an obvious lie)
I said "That's good because no one wants to see animals suffer or be killed by anal electrocution and neck breaking."

The woman's husband got very defensive and immediately started calling me a stupid prick and other names which I haven't heard anyone throw around since middle school. (Mind you, this gentleman must've been at least sixty years old.)
I replied with, "You're a grown man and you're talking to me like that? You really don't have anything else to say?"

At some point they tried to ignore what I was saying just so they could sit in ignorant bliss.
However, I was there first and this lady was sitting directly in front of me so there was no way to ignore it.
Then, I had an idea!
I turned on the Martha Stewart fur video and peacefully went about my work.
(My headphones must've been unplugged because they overheard the audio and weren't thrilled at all!)
Both women's husbands at that point starting saying how I'm an asshole, uneducated, and all that type of stuff.
I explained that I went to Vassar College and have a degree that's all about human rights and environmental issues. And that I was simply trying to talk about compassionate living.
Plus, if her coat was really fake, there was no reason for anyone to take offense, right?

They were furious.
I was amused, yet disheartened by their inability to hold a simple conversation without acting so immaturely!
They stormed out of the place creating quite a scene and everyone laughed at them.
I got back to work and enjoyed the rest of my day!

...I doubt that I made her a member of PETA, but I sure did make these people aware of cruelty to animals and I'm sure they'll think twice before putting on that coat ever again! Plus, everyone else agreed that these fur-loving folks were totally out of line with their cursing and yelling while I sat there calmly just trying to have a conversation.

Please, make sure you say something to everyone you see wearing fur, or at least hand them a leaflet. Do you have a story to share? We'd love to hear it. Post your story below or email it to us at peta2@peta2.com for consideration in future blogs.

oh my gosh, I definately saw that same woman in Ghent on Saturday evening I think. Was it full length and dark brown? I just told her that her coat made her look like a wet dog (quote courtesy of miss CCC). so gross.

That's a fantastic sign idea Pulin!
And well done for last Saturday, it's wonderful that you can hold your temper with people like that.

I live in quite a deprived area so I've never seen anyone wearing a full-length fur coat.

However, anytime I see what could be fur-trim in a shop I go and check the label and then say in a loud voice "I'm so glad this isn't made from dead animals!" or "EEWWWW! It's made from dead animals, that's gross!" so all the customers can hear!

A lot of people at my school wear fur coats and they are a lot like that lady, they are very defensive and closed minded. I try to tell them and they just jump on my case. Doesns't mean I give up though.

Oh that's great.

Once, about one or two years ago, I was riding the metro on the way to work, and sitting in front of me was this woman in a huge, full-length fur coat. I kept quiet the entire time, until the train came to my stop. Then I stood up early, before everyone else, stared the woman up and down, and said to her "Just so you know, you look really stupid in that coat, it's really ugly and cruel." And she said something rude that I can't quite remember, but I know she didn't take kindly to me. She probably thought I was just some kid with stars in her eyes to have the nerve of telling a distinguished woman how dumb she looked in a fur coat. I didn't get a lot of attention, but I know the people sitting and standing nearby were listening, and a man sharing a seat with me just gave me a huge smile when I called the woman an idiot.

Okay I have one question: at my school all of the girls wear bear paw boots or uggs. I myself am a trend follower so I did indeed get a pair of Bear Paws. I do know that Uggs are made of real animal skin but are Bear Paws? Do they just shave off the top layer or kill them for the purpose of making Uggs? Thankyou, Jenn

that is pure genius!
I would have told that woman
off too! So many innocent animals
get hurt everyday and killed, but
that woman has no idea. :l hope
she likes wearin that for the rest
of her life. If you wear fur, you are
wearing death and an innocent animal
that did crap to you! :/

OMG! Thats SOOO great!! I don't see girls wearing fur that often at school so I don't have anyone to say stuff too. =[ BUT I did see this one chick at the mall and she had a full length fur coat on and OMG it was disgusting. I went up to her [even tho my mom yelled at me to stop] and said, "So you like supporting animal cruelty, huh?" and she said, "What?!" Like she was kinda offended but didn't understand what I meant. I went on to tell her about chinese fur farms and how cruel they are to cats dogs and rabbits just to make those hideous coats. She said "CATS AND DOGS!? Thats a lie. I don't believe you. Your just a dumb high school student who thinks she knows everything....." And went on to say MANY more rude things and stormed off. I said "BYE! I HOPE YOU ENJOY THAT DEATH AND CRUELTY YOU THINK YOU LOOK GOOD IN!" Yeaa,, kinda a dumb line but I was so furious of the things she said I couldn't think of a better comeback.LOL

It's this kind of extremism that make people despise PETA members. I doubt you influenced her life as more than just a mild irritation, and in no way made a positive contribution to her knowledge. Furthermore, I doubt she cared.

I go to the Woodfield mall with my friends all the time, and in Macy's, there's a giant all-fur section. Every time we go, we ask an employee inside it if they use real fur. And every time they say yes, we all roll our eyes, storm out talking about how disgusting it is and literally shuddering. Every time, a few people leave. I think last time we counted seven! it's not that many, but it's saving a life every time. Fur is disgusting. Once, my cousin gave me a real fur cell-phone charm shaped like a raccon, and I said, Oh how cute! The dead skin is trying to look like it's former self. She got sooooo mad, but it was worth it.
Nice job on the sign, by the way! how mad was she?

I don't think I would be able to keep myself from getting angry and yelling back, to be perfectly honest with you. However, I did admire your handling of the situation and your efforts to get through to them. I see a ton of girls around my town with those ugly fur boots on and it makes me sick. They look pretty stupid.

Haha,

I have always complained about the girls wearing UGG's in my school, do they honestly need to have lamb wool to keep warm.
Me myself i have boots that look like UGG's but are fake and dont have fur inside.
And it was much cheaper,
you save money and an animal.
They just dont realize it .

Somebody I knew at school was wearing a fur coat. I asked her if it was real and she said no. I asked her if I could check and she said no. I told her about the fur industry and what they did to the animals and bugged her about it all day. She hasn't worn it since.

Wonderful! I love how you handled the situation! I've done that to a few people. Once, I saw a man wearing leather, and his wife/girlfriend wearing a full-length fur coat. I walked up to the couple and asked in a somewhat sarcastic/impressed voice, "Is that REAL FUR?" (This really disgusted me) she twirled around and said "Oh, of course!" I said in the same voice "So you're wearing a dead animal! I'm so impressed!" She said "What are you talking about?" Obviously, this couple was uninformed. I gave them a few leaflets, and I educated them on the chinese torture farms. They looked disgusted. Then they promised to never wear fur again. They thanked me, and walked away.

Today at school a girl was wearing a rocca wear coat she thought she was all cool with her coat, lined with the fur of a dead animal, with the fur puff balls. And i politely asked her if her coat was real fur. She snarled back at me like i had inslted her and said If it was any of your buisness i would say yes this is real fur and im proud of it. I then proceeded to tell her that it became my buisness when she decided to put on her coat this morning. She told me I was being idiotic and theres nothing wrrong with wearing it.I told her alll the things that animals had to go through to be her "fashionable coat". She called me many name such as fruit loop and other unmentionables. I said she was uninformed and quite clueless. She tried to start a fight and took aswing at me .I dont say that violence is akright but if i have to fiht to defend myself and the animals to do it i will

P.S. I won :P

I told some girls in my school who had a jacket with fur. I told them to watch videos from the fur industry, since then 3 of them didn't wear it anymore, the last 1 is to bitch to give up her ugly jacket. Haha. I think that they even got their money back after they went back to the store and leaved the jacket there. I also saw a lady with a fur scarf.. and i screamed at her: "Don't you have a own skin to hide that fat neck?" Pretty rude but.. it's for the animals. Fur is for animals for sure! :)

Today I was actually walking downtown at this early Christmas celebration with my family, and this man walked out of this building with a HUGE fur coat on! I got really angry and glared at him when he passed. The coat was huge and long, and I was peeved. I wanted to say something SO badly, or kick him were it hurt, but I held in my anger because he was passing by really quickly.
But he should NOT model that kind of thing for his children! >:[

I like to have excessively loud conversations next to the individuals waring fur about how cruel and disgusting it is. Im sure it would be better if i talked directly to them, but i have issues with speaking with people i dont know so its easier for me to get the message across indirectly. I continue until they look at me so i know they heard me. I also like to stick anti-fur stickers on fur coats when the wearers arent looking or on store windows that have fur clothing.

that sign is hilarious. to all the whiners, sure, harassing people over eating meat may be a little much because hey, the majority of people are raised into that. BUT verbally destroying a person for wearing a dead animal on their back is just as rude as wearing the fur in the first place. so either way, it's pretty much even.

who gives a damn if people hate peta? i thought we were acting to protect animals, not to make friends.

i have definitely caught the attention of a few people strutting around in the mall wearing fur by calling them disgusting. personally, i think their looks of shock and responses loaded with rudeness are quite hilarious. idiots.

for the people commenting on here about why people hate peta, it's because those people are completely closeminded and don't like to admit they're wrong. whether or not people hate peta, peta is going to keep doing what they're doing. and they should. it's called freedom of speech.

I've stopped a few people that I've seen wearing fur. I ran after one lady to catch up with her. I handed her a leaflet, which she actually read. She then tried to tell me that it was fake. It was a fur vest and you could TELL it was real bunny fur. But at least she kept the leaflet.

I love doing fur protests. I wish we had one down here where I moved, but we didn't. They're the best way to get the message out to large numbers of people.

I went into american eagle and they had fur coats all over. I was immediately disgusted and I went up to the counter and I asked them why they thought it was alright to sell fur inside of their store. They said, "well if you don't like it you don't have to shop here." I replied with a simple your right I don't, and neither me nor my friends will shop here until you remove the fur out of here. They just muttered well we won't loose business. For the rest of the day I walked around the mall telling people not to go inside of american eagle because they sold fur. Many of them were disgusted and stayed away from the store. I was so proud of myself. :) :) fur is murder!

These replies come from some of the most obviously uneducated people out there. When responding to something like this you don't want to sound like an idiot with horrible spelling or grammar.

That being said I %100 agree with how you handled the situation. Some people say that its making PETA look bad or forcing ideas on to someone but I see it as far from that. You didn't lose your temper or raise your voice. Just trying to give people some information to help them make a more informed decision. People who are against PETA act as if PETA is still at the stage of pouring red paint or blood onto people wearing fur. Now that is an immature way to go about things that I would far from support.

In many of the "free" countries of the world we have the privilege to make our own decisions. Which awards the liberties for people to eat meat or wear fur if that is their choice. But what can be done is educating these people to what their decisions really mean, that way a true educated decision can be made. Nobody forced being a vegetarian on me, I just came across the information a few years ago and made what I think to be a wise decision. Granted I still do eat fish, I make the attempts not too but my body can't quite fully adjust to that. And the fish that I do eat are line-caught only and not from fisheries. Go PETA!

I wear FAKE fur and make sure it's FAKE before I buy it. I have pet bunnies at home and seeing them makes me think twice about what I put in my mouth and what I put on my body. I refuse to eat in certain restaurants and shop in certain stores. Why should anyone contribute to eating or wearing cute defenseless animals. Dead animals need love to, but they shouldn't be dead because of MURDER and CRUELTY!

Last winter, we used to go up and politely inform people that they were wearing real fur. A lot of people actually had no idea--cheap, real fur collars are very, very common here. Most people responded pretty politely, though we had a few idiots screaming and picking fights. We retaliated in kind, which in retrospect wasn't the smartest thing to do.

Well done. Yet another person who is making people think that PETA is just a bunch of angry extremists who jump to conclusions and act as if they are better than everyone else.

A girl I go to college with has a real fur coat, I don't feel the need to tell her it's disgusting, everyone knows real fur is wrong now anyway.

Also, I wear a fake fur coat, but after reading some of the comments on here, I'd be frightened to wear even that. You should be ashamed for yelling at peole in your High School corridors and in the street. You never know the full story just by looking.

Posted by: Vee at December 3, 2008 4:56 PM

I agree with your comments and your actions but I also have the thought, "If you've already bought it and worn it, why waste an animal just by throwing the coat out?"
I would NEVER buy leather or fur though, if I accidently bought a leather watch or something, I wouldn't through it out, I'd use it until it fell apart.

I sympathize with all of you. But reading some responses, I'm left very discouraged. Everyone has a right regardless of what it is and if they choose to wear a fur coat, so be it. All we can do is educate them NICELY. Calling them out in a rude or ignorant manner will only make you look like a fool and weaken the cause. Be respectful to people and don't attack them because when you do you make your cause look bad.

Hi I am not a fan of peta but I do believe in being humane and kind to animals, I am aginst fur coats also but for diferent reasons I was born into a hunting family and we were always told you dont kill anything just for its skin or antlers you use it all and I have never seen anyone eat a mink . I think the fur coats are a joke just to show someones status.

I am totally against the cruelty of animals and i am appalled by those who wear fur! But I don't think the way you handled it was good at all. Forcing it upon people doesnt work by any means. You should let people know in a compassionate way! These people who buy fur are either uninformed or don't care, so either way being rude about it wont work...and I know this from experience.

Firstly I do not wear or advocate the wearing of fur of any sort and I'm glad that organisations such as PeTA exist.

However going up to someone in the street and shouting and swearing at them is nothing more than harassment. Its not going to make them change their ways and is more than likely going to result in you getting some form of abuse back.

Also judging by the majority of the above posts, it seems to be mostly very young people approaching members of the public in an aggressive way. The coffee shop scene was a far more amicable way of drawing attention to the PeTA message, whilst coming out the bigger person

More attention needs to get drawn into mediums such as national press, television etc.

Although it all boils down to our right to protest it, and these person's right of deciding on their own accord to wear it.

I don't know if anyone on here watches the office...
but on last week's episode, michael got a bonus from work.
with his extra cash, he went to burrlington coat factory to buy a coat.
as he's talking about buying his fur coat, he is sitting in front of the camera with it on.
(i was disgusted that he was wearing it, of course)....BUT
then the camera pans down and you see red paint splashed across the front.
it turns out there was "one of us" in front of burlington coat factory that threw fake blood on his coat!

i thought it was kinda cool that their main character, who is basically made to be the biggest idiot in the world, went to buy a coat because HE thought it was good. and then that happened.

one of the characters, angela, is also a vegetarian on the show.

i agree that fur is wrong but yelling at people or forcing your beliefs on them is wrong and unfair in any situation, it does in fact weaken the cause and make people think your just crazy, it pisses me off when people in my family harass me about being vegetarian but i dont harasss them about eating meat i try to make it easier to switch and educate them nicely.

Heya, good thing you did that!

I'm 13 years old and I fight for all animals to keep their fur where 'god' has put it. When I was 10 years old, My best friends mom brought her home a coat made of fox fur. I immediately looked at it and shook my head. The parents of this girl asked what was wrong, as this was supposed to be a birthday present, my friend had not seen it. I didn't answer for a bit and then said nothing. When my friend opened the present that night, she spoke of how soft the fur was and such... i immediately blurted out. " But it's a foxy." and she began to cry. She screamed and threw a fit at how her parents had hurt the foxy. Eventually the parents of this girl took the coat back and exchanged it for something... less furry per say.

I'm slowly going vegetarian, and I don't wear fur, but like in the summer I accidently got a leather belt. I'm still using it, but I'll be sure to check next time.
Also I laughed at how you handled it, I would totally do that, but in my town you get in trouble with the police so easily.
So we don't try.
But with the uggs, I hate them too, they're ugly, couldn't they find a fur free fashion?
Anything with faux fur, I'm gonna start my own animal-cruelty free trend (:

I agree that wearing fur is incredibly inhumane, but whose mind did you really change by harassing that woman? To be honest, most of these comments are written people who seem to get satisfaction out of annoying people for their own self-promoting reasons.
Some people have posted that they are actually DISAPPOINTED that they haven't seen anyone wearing a fur coat recently because they can't do ridiculous things like making rude signs or "educating" people. So let me get this straight, you WANT someone to wear a fur jacket so that you can feel good about yourself???? Who are you looking out for- animals or yourself?
By telling someone sarcastically that their jacket is murder, and continually insulting them, are you really helping any animals?
PEACE and LOVE people!
THIS is why many people HATE PETA.
Treat everyone nicely, children.

While reading this article, I discovered the Martha Steward fur video and was shocked to see how...I can't even find a work to describe how ugly that video was and how sick to my stomach I am now. I'm vegan, and a huge animal lover. I have see and been introduced to how horrific the food industry is through PETA videos, but I can say that I have never been exposed to a fur video. I don't understand why I've never come across this.

I am OUTRAGED that this is unregulated industry operating within the United States. I mean everything is regulated in the United States.

Thank you for educating others in my behalf. Thank you for stepping in when others felt could not or were not brave enough to do so, I feel like some one else who might not have been as brave would have faltered in taking a stand against people like that due to their abrasive nature.

I agree wholeheartedly with the poster 5 previous to myself. There is a difference between educating people on the downsides to buying animal products and being rude and preachy. There is a good reason why many people hate PETA: it's because spoiled, self righteous young girls (and boys) ruin their positive message by spreading it in the wrong way.

No one is going to take the message seriously if you don't deliver it like a responsible, intelligent adult.

The bottom line is that it's a choice. It's unfortunate that some people aren't bothered by the fur industry, but right and wrong is not black and white.

Last week, I was with my Fiance' at Olive Garder... We were sitting on the green couches waiting to be called for our table. When the door swung open, a woman walked in. She wore a long, full-length coat or Mink (I think) and a hat that matched. As she went up to the desk and announced her reservation area, we lifted our brows.

Despite his reqests to sit silently, I got up. Sliding up next to her I looked interested. "Wow, is that real?"
She gave me a snooty, 'Im all THAT' look saying, "yes..."
I replied, "Oh, must've cost you a pretty penny huh?" She nodded as if she was annoyed of me. "Someone like me would have to save all their life or sell their soul for that kinda' thing..." I smiled.
She stuck her nose in the air, "I'm sure it would.."
I grinned, "Well, I'm sure it cost them animals just that... their lives."
She looked stunned like I just poured paint on her or something. "Excuse me?"
Luckily, they called our number just at that time - I simply walked away smiling and such with my arm around my Fiance's. "You can hear them screaming now can't yah'?" I muttered.
She was bright bright red, it was funny - she slid her coat and hat off... And I never saw her ever again... I think maybe I hit her with something.

Well done to all people on this list who are against fur!!! Although I bet half of you eat meat. If your going to be against fur, you need to be a vegan too. Just to say I love all of the activists on this list.
Also - why do some people just come on here to call us extremists? If you ever see a negative comment from someone who eats meat, or is for animal testing, stuff like that - remember that they are only syaing gay things to us because they know that they are wrong and that we are mentally superior!! VEGANS RULE THE EARTH!!

Today. My sister decided to have a little get-together with a few of her friends. They came over to the house.. And to my surprise they were ALL wearing fur.
I asked " Is that fur real? " and everybody in my school knows that I am an animal rights activist.
These little girls wanted to be smart so they got cocky.
" Oh why yess. I watched them kill it myself. It was sooo divine. " one of the girls said.
" Yes there was blood everywhere " said another.
" Mine was made in one of those chinese factories where they torture them! "
They were all acting like they had some form of wealth about them.

I tried to reason with them but all was lost.
until I spoke up with a slightly angered voice.
" You know. I hope one day you wear a coat made from your own dogs fur. And dont realize it until you see that one spot on him that you loved so much"

After that I went to my room. A little harsh but I got the point across.

Sweetness! But for all the comments where they say they called people dumb for wearing fur, could've been a bit more...tactful. Just because someone wears fur does not make them dumb or a bad person. Simply ignorant of what went into making that garment. There is a proper way to express your personal beliefs in a polite and fair manner. If someone had different religious beliefs than you, would you call them dumb? I shoud hope not. Its the same principle. There are ways to get your point across, without being offensive.

talking to people like that sounds a little mean, and i understand why the husband got mad at you, because you shouldn't judge people by fur wearing. you should have told her about the horrors about fur because most people who wear fur haven't seen what the animal's they're wearing have been through.
in other words some people just need to learn about animal abuse and OTHER people need to learn how to be more courteous :)

About a year ago I worked at a gourmet grocery store as a bagboy in a rather wealthy area of town. About two months after starting that job, customers started coming in with fur coats and scarves. I would always ask if the fur was real, and if so I promptly walked away during the middle of bagging their groceries. But this is where I got in trouble. I was bagging for the manager one day and a lady with a FULL LENGTH FUR COAT came into the line. Of course, I asked if the fur was real. My manager realed around, stared at me with a look of death, and when the lady said "yes, its real", I walked away like always. Well, my manager repeadedly apologized to the customer and started rationalizing "oh hes just a vegan, dont worry about him" and my manager even went so far as to complement the lady on the fur coat! I went over to the customer and my manager and said "Don't you ever try to rationalize and deconstruct my morals for someone who wears tortured animals as clothing!"
Needless to say, I was fired that day, but I dont regret anything I said :)

Robert E Lee, I find this comment extremely offensive. Bipolar disorder is terrible. Using it as a derogatory remark about someone who behaved badly is simply ignorant. I'm bipolar, but I'm not a jerk to people like the fur-wearer was.

I think you need to do some research and find out what bipolar disorder REALLY is before you make stupid comments.

Well, today actually, I was shopping at the mall with my mom for some gifts, and I was wandering around, and I saw all these pom pom scarfs. There were kinda weird looking and they felt weird. So I looked to see what they were made out of, and it turns out that they were rabbit fur. The part that kinda ticked me off was that they were on sale, like that a bunny is worth less than 50 dollars. My mom saw them and thought that they were ugly scarfs. I wanted to say something to someone that worked there, but I didn't because I had to pick out a acrylic cotton scarf for my grandma, and a fleece scarf for my mom's co-worker. But it's just sad that you could tell that someone bought one of those scarfs, and I could only think that someone must really not care at all about the welfare of these rabbits because they bought a scarf. And to me, if you buy one of those scarfs, you're only contributing to the skinning and death of these poor creatures. And the weird part was after I putting it back on the rack, my hands felt really dirty for some reason. Maybe because rabbits fur isn't meant for anyone other than rabbits!

Expressing your views to other people is fine but harassing them and using rude and sarcastic comments is not the way to go about spreading the message of PETA. Handout the leaflets and if you must, inform people on the street of the cruelty to animals that is behind their high end fashions, but to be extreme about it is promoting close-minded people to ignore you and your information. Hostility is not the way. Just as we ignore rude people who reply harshly when we calmly give them information about animal cruelty, many people will ignore us if we are hostile about spreading compassion. It is almost contradictory to our message, Lets save animals but offend are human brothers in the process. Let’s go out and inform the world why we shouldn't wear fur or dad animals but let’s do it in an effective compassionate way. Lets calmly talk to people and inform them about the wrongdoing in wearing fur, lets handout our literature, but do not behave offensively, if people respond with rude remarks we know we have struck a nerve but don't fall to their level, we are compassionate to animals and so we must act compassionately to humankind as well.

The next day we had a surprise assembly and it was all about how animals are abuesed, Killed and threatend because of us wearing fur. I pearsonally think fur belongs on animals not in stores

Ok, here's a comment going to any PETA members 18 or under: I think it's great that you all love animals so much and that you're so committed to your cause. But what you may not realize is that you are doing a lot of harm to the already rocky reputation of PETA by approaching people with a judgemental attitude. These situations are what give PETA a bad name with a lot of people. None of us want that, do we? If you are rude and haughty about being the one in the room who doesn't wear fur, you're acting just as bad as the people who act rude and haughty about being the ones wearing the fur.

For the people willing to listen to a better way to approach people about this touchy subject, here's how I suggest approaching people wearing fur, leather, or any other animal clothing. After all, it's worked for me.

First, find out (politely!!) if they already know how their fur/leather/whatever clothing is made. If they don't, there's your opportunity to hand them a leaflet and/or share whatever information you can remember.

If they already know how their clothes were made, calmly ask them (with concern in your eyes and voice if you can muster it) why they still think it's ok to wear the skin or fur of an animal that was tortured and killed for the sake of fashion. Hear them out, or if you can't bring yourself to do that, at least pretend to. Then hand them a leaflet and walk away.

Bottom line: We cannot change the world for the better by getting into insult-throwing, you're-stupid-for-wearing-animals fights with people. I n the short term it may feel good to publicly humiliate people, and you might even get a few people to stop wearing their fur that way (at least around you). But then you've become a bully. You've become just as bad toward people, whom you didn't give the chance to tell their side of the story, as the slaughterhouses and fashion designers, who didn't give the animals a chance to tell their story either.

Ultimately, as hard as it is to accept, it is an individual's right to choose whether or not they wear animal skins or furs. We cannot control people, nor should we. All we can do is educate people and hope that their heart will listen some day.

Thanks for your time in reading my comment (I know it was long, lol). Please keep my advice in mind. =)

I was at school one day and noticed my friend Tabitha got a new pair of REAL uggs for her birthday I immediately made sure she wasn't looking and took out a don't buy leather sticker and put it on her shoes. Then i told they were made of real leather and she walked off. For christmas i asked for a pair of fake uggs that were canvas and faux fur my friends and i always hold up flyers and stuff in the hallway so people can see it i got a detention for it but I said freedom of protest and stormed off with a smirk.

it was so funny when i did this to two girls just a few days ago. i saw them in the halls with these matching jackets with a bunch of fur lining and trim. ((can i say ugly?)) so i went up and asked if that was real fur they were wearing, they say yes of course. so i asked what kind. rabbit. ((why?!? :( )) and then i made a face and said that i once had a bunny named cody (which is true he was so cute) and that i would never be able to wear someone's pet. did they realize that they were wearing someone's skin? they both made a face and started to walk away but i saw them talking and looking at their coats funny. i don't think i saw them wearing the coats around school again XD though i wish they hadn't in the first place then they wouldn't be supporting the industry DX

That is incredibly wrong.
They shouldnt wear the skin of someone else!
Howcome its right to wear an animals but human.
Its ludacrious.
When did we have the right to decide when a animal dies , it shouldnt be that way - INDEPENDANCE.

About a week ago I went on a date with an attractive lady who was wearing something of questionable origin , (looked like fur) so I decided to politely ask if the fur collar was real. She was very insulted , not for the usual reasons but because she thought I was implying that she was a mean person. The "fur" was fake.
Can't win .
p.s. Even fake Uggs are hideous.

Haa.
That's great. :).
I was on my friends bus one day a few weeks ago, and there was this girl wearing a fur coat. :(.
I asked her if it was real. And she was like, "Yah it's real rabbit fur." I started talking to her about what the poor rabbit had to go through for her to get that coat. And she got really mad and yelled at me and called me and inconsiderate b**** who doesn't know what they're talking about.
I think that basically everyone gets offended when you say something to them about the dead skin that they're sporting on there back. But it's horrible. :/.

I think everyone has the right to express their opinions to who ever, especially if they are wearing fur. So all you people who are saying that we are all stupid or whatever, would you be ok with us skinning you and wearing you?
Oh wait no its different because your humans and there are certain laws about that, wait you cant be a human because you have no compasion what so ever. =) i sincerly hope you have a nice day PETA and everyone else you agrees with killing animals for vanity i hope this comment goes up yours.... sideways :)

Ahaha. that's pretty grande.
something i definitely woulda done!
It amazes that people even enjoy, and/or have the pleasure in wearing a beat, tortured baby seal, an electrocuted rabbit or chinchilla, and skinned foxes. Its a funny thing..Animals were here long before humans right? So the earth was theirs long before us. It makes me so sad.
As horrible as this all is, it really opens my eyes in wanting to change the world, and how we look at animals like they are nothing.
stay true everyone, and happy new year!

I understand what Grace is getting at as far as bullying and harassing people. You can do a great deal of damage (PETA certainly has before) to your public face by disrupting people's activities and/or humiliating them. However...

The situation for animals in many circumstances is DIRE. I believe PETA takes a bit of a Machiavellian approach. That is to say that the 'ends justify the means.' The truth of the matter is repeated pressure over a long period of time can get it done. One of Portland's premier furriers was run out of town after over a year of consistent protests and run-ins with the owner.

I'm not the type to splash people with red paint or picket outside their homes, but I am not necessarily opposed to people who care about animals doing almost anything to protect them.

Man, I totally hate fur coats. It's inhumane, disgusting and altogether disrespectful. And people who wear fur are just thinking about their appearances instead of what those cute little animals had to go through to be their dumb coats. And the prices! Who would spend that much just to be wearing the dead fur of an adorable dead animal who's blood now lies in the hands of those dumb fur-wearing people. It is downright unnecessary and totally gross. I wouldn't be able to wear fur for five seconds without screaming "I'M A MURDERER!!!" and I don't think any of us peta members can either. Only a completely stupid, clueless person would wear fur and think they look good. And by the way this is little_veg123, I'm anonymous because I could not log in. Darn.

I read a lot of comments on here my point is this you approach people with rude and sly comments which is not right. Just because you are against something doesn't give you the right to down talk other people who do wear it. It's their money that they work for and it's their business. Try to stand up for bigger things like racism. Jenna 6 happened and i didn't see people in an uproar about that. And then here is Ellen on her show crying about a dog. People give more effort to save animals than humans what is the world coming to? This is america and if people want to wear fur, be an atheist, eat meat, be a homosexual, or whatever they choose to do With THEIR life so be it.

I haven't really seen any kids wearing fur or leather at my school, but if I do, I will be sure to say something about it!!!!
I can't believe that some people think it's "fashionable" and "cool" to wear dead animals! After reading all these comments about people walking up to complete strangers and saying stuff to them if they are wearing a real fur coat. I'm pretty shy, so it would be hard for me to do that! But if it helps the animals, I would some how think of a way to talk to someone who's wearing fur/leather.
But anyway, one day my mom got me these leather-looking pants and I like freaked out and looked at the tag...LUCKILY, it was fake leather. yay! If it had been real leather, I would have asked my mom to bring it back to the store, and if she couldn't, then I would throw it away. No way would I be caught wearing a dead animal(s)!!!!
Some day i want to join some PETA people in a protest against KFC! That would be fun! lol
My dad has chickens and boy are they spoiled! He's not a Vegan or Vegetarian, but we don't eat any of our chickens; we just raise them for selling eggs, eating eggs, selling baby chicks(to good owners) and that's about it. The chickens are loved very much! I have one chicken friend named Cinnamon, which some meat eaters in my class think it's weird to name a chicken, but it seems quite normal and everyone should do it.

My mom always says about meat eaters and fur(A.K.A dead animal skin) "Ignorance is bliss!" which is totally true! That's why people get all offended, because they know they're wrong and they don't want to know the truth because than it would make them feel bad and that's why they get mad at you. They think YOUR making them feel bad, when it's themselves that are wearing the fur/leather or eating meat(a.k.a dead animal flesh) in the first place!
Go Vegetarians!

I think that people who wear fur coats are disgraceful. I've heard that its been proven that man-made fur is warmer, lest costly, and cruelty free, so theres no reason to wear dead animals on your back! Why cant people just buy regular winter jackets, they keep you warm just fine, no one needs a long dead fur jacket when there are perfectly fine other winter jackets containing no fur.

I think what you did was really wonderful but i try to be a little bit nicer because more people seem to respond when they are treated kindly and they are actually considered as a person no some one who just wears fur and eats meat because they are a person too. I am always kind and just inform them why I think it is wrong to wear non-vegan clothing and tell them some facts or give them a leaflet. Often I get understanding responses and they promise to never wear fur again. Also don't come on here just to say that we are dumb for not eating meat and promoting non-cruelty to animals. Look that is actually what we believe and maybe some members of peta can be a little "radical" at times but it's because they're are absolutely outraged!

This happened to me at school before. I was sitting at a table with two of my friends and we were actully talking about this website and being new members when a girl walks in the cafiteria wearing a dress coat made of fur. I got a little upset and went up to the girl and asked her if was a real fur coat, she said yes and was so proud, she even told me it was made from bear fur. And at this point I was getting angry and i started to tell her some of the ways they killed the anamials she was wearing, she got a bit upset but i have not seen her wear fur again but with her attude toward anamials she will later in life. Hopefully then someone will say something like I did.

What a jerk, really? I can see why they were mad. These people are old...they grew up in a different time and they were out for coffee. They didn't start a conversation with you or cast the first stone. You can't say that they acted like kids in middle school because who was the one who pulled up an anti-fur video and blasted it for them to hear. That is not cool, period. What they wear, eat, whatever is up to them...just like you can eat and wear whatever you want. BTW saw the new safe the fish idea. Sounds great, I'm gonna be having "sea kittens" for dinner tonight. My Grandmother thinks animals are put on the earth to be made into food and clothes. So one day about a year ago it had snowed( I do live in Utah so its common) about a week before and i had to go and visit her cuz she needed help painting her den red so my dad took me to go and help. She was waring a FLOOR LENETH fox coat!!!!! I thought I was going to be sick. She had taken it off to paint and i was in her basement gaging. so after we were all done painting she asked me to put it in her closet. I told her no and so my dad screamed at me so I had to ugh. But instead of taking it to her closet i took it to the garage and found the extra red paint and pored it all over the coat and then wrote and the concrete floor "FUR IS MURDER!". She found her coat after we left and she called my dad...well i was grounded for five months but it was worth it too teach her a lession she will never forget!!!

Honestly...people don't want to hear about the way their fur ended up on their jackets...because they don't want to think about it. They want to think that the fur on their jackets is just found on the ground and that no animals were hurt in the making.

i have anti-fur things everywhere around me! lol! i even carry a purse with the anti-fur sticker. when i walk around i want ppl to know my views on their disguting habits.

when i have to walk by the fur department at the mall to go to the restroom, i make a note to talk loudly about how i have no idea why someone would WANT to walk around in a dead tortured animal. or that i dont know why someone thinks that the price they pay for the tortured animal is any compensation for its death!

i love it when ppl look at me and stare. they should!

Fur looks better on animals. NOT on people. Its funny, my friends and I, whenever we see a person wearing a fur coat, we go up to them and ask them if its real. If they say yes, we walk away a few paces, then toss rotten tomatoes at them. If its Faux, then we glare, and walk away.

I love the sign idea. it's not extreme at all. so it actually makes people think. to all of you who say you just yell things or call people idiots or monsters, you're not doing any good. by doing these things, you just make people pissed off. so they continue to wear fur just to anger you in return. being rude doesn't do anything. you will always have the people who get offended no matter what, but try to inform them in a polite way. there's the slight possibility they will listen. it's more likely than if they are yelled at.

At school today, I was sitting in class, and another student commented on the teacher's big belt buckle. He started talking about belts for a few minutes, and I looked up at him, he was right in front of me, and said, "do you like wearing the remains of a dead tortured animal's skin around your waist?" He asked me if I was a vegetarian and I said yes, and then asked me if I was with PETA, and some idiot yelled out 'PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS!'

So, I stood up, and launched into a full rant of the most horrible things I could think of. I was nearly yelling; "Do you know what those poor animals go through?! They get electric prods shoved up their rectums! Their killed while still conscious! Cattle WATCH their limbs being cut off! Chickens get squeezed so hard that they expel feces on other birds! Pigs get their teeth cut in half, their tails cut off! And you can LAUGH at that? You're just a bunch of sick, heartless jerks!" Needless to say, I can get mad. Then I took out my "hot pass", a nice little piece of paper that gets me out of class when I'm mad and about to maim someone, and stormed out of the room.

People can be such cruel idiots.

and also. don't say it is 100% wrong to wear animal fur, because its not. i would bet money there is someone out there who doesnt have heat or money and use some type of fur to keep warm.

Now I feel bad... One of my winter coats has a fur trimmed hood... I mean, not REAL fur, its polyester, but now I feel bad about it... I think I'm going to stop wearing it... I have another without any fur, fake or not, and I don't own real fur, or leather for that matter.

Just a few days ago I was out walking with my boyfriend, it was snowing lightly, and we were cold, naturally, so we stopped to get coffee and warm up. We were having a pleasant enough time... until someone wearing a fur coat came into the cafe. He looked at me with pleading eyes, and murmured, "Ana, please don't..." But... I was already getting up. The lady was just sitting down, and I sat right across from her. She looked at me weirdly, and asked, "excuse me, what are you doing?"
"Oh... I was just wondering, is that coat real?"
She seemed to sit up a little straighter and told me "yes."
"What is it?"
"Rabbit fur..." She was still eying me oddly. "Can I help you?"
"Oh, not really... Gosh, I'd have to sell my soul to the devil to get one of those."
"I'm sure you would."
"But... I guess the rabbit didn't have to... someone else sold it instead..."
"Excuse me?"
"Well, I'm sure the rabbit didn't want to give it's life up... You know, to be dragged out of a tiny cage by some demon and have it's throat slit, the poor little guy shaking and such." I pulled a leaflet out of my purse, which had a few stickers on it, I made sure she could see the anti-fur one.
I handed her the leaflet, and said, "I just stopped over here to ask you to read this for me. I'll leave now." After I said that, I got up and returned to my boyfriend and coffee. I looked over to the side, and saw the woman reading the leaflet. When she was done she took her coat off. I smiled at my boyfriend and said, "and you didn't want me to talk to her!"

And... if I could say something to all the people here against us... We have the right to express our beliefs, what we do isn't much different from the groups of people I see on our city's busiest street, handing out leaflets for Christianity. No one bothers to tell them that they're wrong. Sure, sometimes we get a little rude... but that's only because we get frustrated. We love animals, living creatures, and we don't want them hurt. And I personally believe that those who don't care, are in fact a bit heartless. And... if you don't care, then how 'bout you don't come to websites that are against the sort of things you enjoy just to mock us? It makes you all seem pretty immature.

I can not stand people wearing fur. there is a store in chicago IL, that sells fur coats "Adriana furs" in the magnificient mile.
well there was this woman giving leaflet showing there offers, I approached and ask her if she likes her coat and she reply "I love it" I ask her "do you know where the fur comes from? and she said "no and I don't want to know" I told her "you should know that what you are wearing is something that cause a lot of suffering to many animals"
also I said "know you need that coat because the animals that had their skin are dead so they don't need that now because you look good on lots suffering and dead skin.
she said she was going to call the police. and went iside the store.

I F&%@#% hate them.....

I'm sorry, but as a Vegan i feel it's situations like this that turn people away from our causes. I'm not very religious and if someone came to me in a coffee shop and started preaching the "word of the lord" i'd be pretty annoyed too.

We're supposed to be humantarians, that doesn't mean everyone has to agree with us.

This is why people think my membership to PETA makes me in a cult.

Come on people, you win more with honey than vinegar.

If we keep this up we're just as bad as the people we're fighting against.

I find this whole posting hilarious. As of now I don't own anything that has fur, but I am considering it just to get a good laugh when someone tells me it's a dead animal. What clothing is the most cruel to animals? Please tell so I can go buy two.

in fact i was in a store just up the raod form where i live and they were selling coats. well my friend and i went in to look around and saw that the coats had "fur" around the hoods.

my friend looked at me and went,"that is so gross, and it is tottaly ugly." she was right of course and so we went to the person in charge of the store. i very politely asked the man,"are the hoods of your coat lined with real or fake fur?"
the man looked at us and said,"no they're fake fur"
needless to say i was really relieved to hear that answer.

when me friend and i left she said."i'm glade it's fake fur becuse i would never go in there again!"

i laughed and agreed then we walked back up the road by the water for about an hour. we so much fun walking along the rocks and shore line.

I wouldn't have the guts of what you did, Pulin.
Some girl in my homeroom started arguing with another girl saying "I'm against animal cruetly, so don't talk about hurting animals infront of me, or I'll start crying! People who wear fur are f*cking pricks!"
The dumb thing about this was that she was wearing UGG boots while she was saying this. I told her to shut up and sit down since she was wearing fur at that moment.

Abusing fur wearers is not the way to engender sympathy for the cause of PETA. The only way it will succeed is by educating people as to the provenance of their furs and skins.

I own a full-length fake mink coat. I feel great when I wear it because (1)it looks wonderful and (2)I know that no animal had to suffer to produce it. And if anyone comments on it, I use that as an opportunity to put the message across about how you don't need to kill any animal for fashion.

To Megan- yes Bearpaw boots are suede and wool. And no they dont just 'shave off the top layer' of skin...how the hell would they be able to do that? Yes, your boots are from a dead animal. So if you care about animals at all, I suggest you throw them out. You should have checked what they were made of before you bought them.

Wow, I deffinatly love you for doing that. I get so upset when I see people wearing fur, I love how you had guts and stood up! Far too many people want to ignore where things come from, it's time that they face reality! Good Job.

I agree that wearing fur is horrible, and think it never looks good and that it is murder. But i feel the way you all go about this is all wrong. Going up to someone and saying they look disgusting and fighting with them is doing nothing to stop them from wearing fur. You should just go over and nicely give them a pamphlet and hope it changes their minds.

i saw a woman at common grounds (a coffee shop) and she wore a big, orange fur coat. i asked "what animal did u kill to get THAT?" she said i was very rude and being childish.
w/e,
i told her it was just like killing one of her own.
she decided to go up and buy some coffee. sat down. and finished her coffee. then, this is the interesting part, she went across the street and went inside a mcdonalds. bought something, obviously a burger, and came back. she came up to me, and threw the burger at my friend jojo, and yelled "u love animals?!?here's ur precious animal!!!" and i stood up.
i said," that's just pathetic. ur killing animals in TWO ways. i feel so bad for your family, ooooo so sad.tsk tsk.
see you later. go kill more animals for ur own material needs."
that was so much fun.
jojo went to my house and took a long shower.
then, it was time to go onto the internet.

I honestly don't see that many people walking around with fur coats.

But my substitute teacher in webmastering was like "ohhh so you're on that fur is dead website"
and i said "yeah."
then she brought up how her daughter has the shirt and everything...then she said how she owns a mink fur coat.
I was just "WHOAHHHH. That's really gross..."
and she said "no, its really warm and soft"
i just shook my head and gave her like the most disgusted look.

LOL oh yeah and this girl at my school has these HUUUUGE fur boots. Like, they look like the weigh a ton. But I dunno if she thinks they look cute...but they look stupid as hell.
It's like as if she shoved her foot up some animals butthole. Ha its horrible.
But really everything i told her wont get through her thick skull.

I'd love to have PETA come up with a good flyer to hand out to people. I've thought about writing my own, but not only would PETA's probably be better, but other people could access it. Unfortunately, as great as this coffee shop story is, often we don't have the time to talk to people wearing fur. They are passing on the street or just with us in the subway for a moment. If we had a flyer that we could hand them that gave the link of peta videos as well as details about the animals' torture both in life and in how they are killed, then we would be able to just briefly say in a very nice way, "I just wanted to give you this flyer with more information in case you really don't know about it so that you can make a more compassionate choice next time you think about buying fur."

Hi--I've read all the comments but I have to ask--do the same people who fight against people who wear fur & leather coats--notice footwear too?

Plus can you really tell if a coat is faux-fur? most of the faux fur that has been produced in the last 24 months looks real until you TOUCH it.

Honestly I live in the coldest city on earth--most ppl like to think they do too but we actually won some sort of weather contest. Many MANY people have FAUX fur coats here. Why? They are WARM. I have 7 people in my life who wear faux fur coats. You can tell it's FAUX when they wear it.

For the sake of arguement I asked them WHY they chose this vs. maybe wool? Their answer was that it was cheaper & they could afford it.

PLUS the coats are WARM & I put one on to try--you know what''they are REALLLLLLLLLY warm! Nice & toasty!

So sometimes in SOME cases--it's really got nothing to do with activist ideas or going against activist ideas. Sometimes it is practical and you have to understand--those FAUX fur coats are CHEAP!

In order to go after faux-fur PLEASE consider going after the BRANDS--the COMPANIES! A good WOOL coat is over $400 Canadian!

A high quality faux fur is about $150-200 Canadian. While a GORTEX is easily around $400-500!

Fleece & nylon in our part of the world does NOT cut it in the wintertime!

I do AGREE with those of you asking those in New York OR areas where the temperature isn't very cold at all. Those women are probably going for FASHION over practicalness.

However please consider where you live & window shop ok? See what the costs are for professional style DRESS coats that women who have office jobs have a choice of.

If you notice they ARE cheaper--then it maybe worth while finding out the companies that SELL THEM!

Also for those of you WHOM ARE over the age of 18 in both the USA & the in Canada--you can easily be charged under the criminal codes within both countries and that can then subsequently affect your futures.

You may not always want to be an activist or even if you want to be--you may want to be able to have the freedom to leave your country & vote! YOu can't with a criminal record! You can't even get a credit history that will eventually allow for you to buy a car or a HOUSE! (the latter is true in most Canadian provinces).

SO be careful when you go & attack strangers on the street. Also realize you don't know who you are attacking--it's worthwhile to be concerned for your physical safety when verbally attacking a stranger. There is nothing stopping them FROM ATTACKING you back!

Their response is probably NOT always going to be a verbal response either! So please PLEASE be careful, be smart & find a way that gets your point across but without RUINING your own life!
