Turkey Pardon Fail, Starring Sarah Palin November 21, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 18 ) | TrackBack

The moose-hunting, fur-wearing, pro-aerial-wolf-gunning governor is in the news again. On Thursday, Sarah Palin visited a turkey farm in Wasilla for the traditional pre-Thanksgiving turkey "pardoning." Now, most people probably don't think about exactly how the turkeys raised for Thanksgiving dinner every year meet their maker. But not to worry. Sarah has that under control. In this video, while responding to a reporter who asks about her post-election plans, Palin talks about how she wants to "promote a local business" and do something that won't "invite criticism." While turkeys are being slaughtered. Behind her. ON CAMERA.

Was that one of those "gotcha" questions, Sarah? Because it seems to me that showing the bloody reality of slaughter is just about the worst thing you could do to promote this business. Some people just won't want to eat turkey after watching—especially when this happened the day after PETA released new undercover video from the world's leading poultry-breeding facility. In that video, workers stomp on turkeys' heads, punch them, and bang their heads against metal scaffolding.

This is a country of people who love animals—in fact, 97 percent of Americans believe that farmed animals deserve to be protected from abuse. The more that people are confronted with the ways that animals who are raised for food suffer—from the moment they're born until the moment they're killed—the more that people will start thinking about giving vegetarian meals a try. And then the factory farming industry will need a bigger bailout than the "Big Three."

-Dan

P.S. Sarah Palin should take a cue from our own "President Bush," whose turkey-pardoning this year really was a "mission accomplished."

I want to say a BIG thank you to Sarah Palin for showing TV viewers the reality of how turkeys are slaughtered...although it's disturbing that she says it's "fun"!

What exactly WAS happening? I saw the turkey moving and stuff after it was put into the chute but I didn't see any blood. And I don't need to SEE it done, so don't send me another video, I just want to read text on how it's done.

HA! I love how the Nazi-dude's just standing there waiting for the camera to be shut off, because he knows that what he's doing is more than worthy of being illegal.
REAL WOMEN DO NOT HUNT MOOSE, SARAH PALIN-TOLOGY!
REAL WOMEN RECOGNIZE PROGRESS!
STOP HOLDING US BACK!

I SENT THIS BEFORE BUT ONE OF THE STATEMENTS BELOW I WROTE BACKWARDS, HERE IS WHAT I MENT TO SAY:

Ok, PeTA seriously, give me a break. I've been a member for a while now and I'm very dedicated to saving animals. While I don't like the fact that the turkey was killed,I've also always hated how you rag on celebs! It's ridiculous. If you want someone to follow you, you educate them not insult them. The worst dressed list is uncalled for. Hows about trying to teach them about things before making fun of them for reasons that are unrelated. And the recent assault to Lindsey Lohan makes PeTA seem childish and petty. You guys are making it HARDER for animal rights to happen because nobody takes us seriously anymore because of your ridiculous antics! PLEASE STOP FOR THE ANIMALS FUCKING SAKE! JESUS!

That said, How exactly is Sarah Palin responsible for what happened in the background? What was she supposed to do? Run over and grab the man? That's illegal, it's the man's job. I'm vegan and totally against animal cruelty, but I think hunting is THE LEAST cruel way animals are killed for food in this country. It also makes no sense how you earlier posted a blog saying "Hunting is bad" and then posted a video of a deer being slaughtered in a slaughterhouse....

All in all, I still support Sarah Palin, and I still support WHAT PETA BELIEVES IN. But I don't always support you because you are hurting more than you are helping. I will continue to do my almost weekly protests and fight the fight but I'm VERY disappointed in PeTA and what you have done for the animal rights movement.

-Tom

oh and side note: "This is a country of people who love animals—in fact, 97 percent of Americans believe that farmed animals deserve to be protected from abuse." Is the biggest bullshit statement I have ever heard. If THAT many people really thought that then slaughterhouses wouldn't be that cruel. What? the other 3% are ALL slaughterhouse workers...?

For those who are unfamiliar with and were asking about the poultry slaughter process, here's my best explanation at what was being done. The first turkey was nearly done being bled as Sarah starts the press conference; the guy pulls it out of the cone as Sarah says "It was a Blast..." This turkey will now get its feathers plucked and the internal organs removed, probably by others off-camera.

Now, the second turkey was placed, alive, head-first into the same upside-down cone when the reporter was asking about "state programs being on the CHOPPING BLOCK" (Freudian slip, there?)

The cone doesn't do anything to kill the bird; it's not a grinder or a chopping machine or anything like that, it's only there to hold and stabilize the bird as its blood drains AFTER the carotid arteries on the neck are severed.

This process is what you see when you watch the guy reaching for the knife on that shelf as Sarah mentions "spend, spend, spend..." This is the knife which he will use to sever the carotid arteries, which he does very quickly - the one on the right as Sarah mentions "prepare for the day", and the one on the left as Sarah is saying "Which of course it has done..." At that point the turkey loses consciousness within seconds. Probably before the guy replaces the knife as Sarah says "comes into play at this point..."

From this point on, the turkey is dead and is bleeding out. This takes a while, and it's during this time that having it in the cone makes it easier for the butcher, because reflexive actions in the body cause it to twitch and flail as you can see. The butcher need only hold onto the feet to keep it stable as the blood runs into that white plastic basin under the cones.

Does this help?

Wow. Sarah Palin is such a horrible woman. How can she just stand there? And all the horrible things she does, like being pro-wolf shooting and a hunter. I can't believe she's a mother. I feel so much pity for her children. Thank goodness I'm Canadian, I couldn't live in America with people like her.

I think you are all crazy~~What the hell do you eat for Thanksgiving? I visited this site because I am against wearing fur, killing animals SOLELY for their fur, but the reason us meat eaters are so much healthier than the rest of you holier than thou vegans is because they were made to be eaten....the circle of life, HELLO, oh ya, and they taste GREAT!!!!!!! P.S. Sarah Palin ROCKS!!

Just reading the comment after mine, looks like a candidate for the "vote for you favorite dumb comment" post, right?

To 'Analiese'- Do you have evidence that you meat eaters are healthier than vegans? And it's not the circle of life because the circle of life is natural, and this isnt natural. Why are you against fur but for meat? And 'because they were made to be eaten' isnt a good enough answer.
