Happy Fur-Free-Friday, y'all!

In honor of one of my favorite days of the year—Fur-Free Friday, a.k,a. "Black Friday"—I thought the perfect Free Stuff Friday giveaway would be our "Love Me, Don't Wear Me" tees.

Love_Me_Don%27t_Wear_Me_tee.jpg

Lovingly designed by peta2 friend, the amazing Jasten King a few years back, these shirts feature an adorable bunny with "love me" written graffiti-style in various languages inside the bunny. Bunny!

We've got three "Love Me, Don't Wear Me" tees up for grabs! To get your hands on one of Jasten's masterpieces just comment below with your favorite polite snappy comeback for fur hags and your shirt size.

Happy Tofurky Day 2008! November 27, 2008

Posted by Ryan | Permalink | Comments ( 14 ) | TrackBack

I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving has to be my absolute favorite holiday (sorry Flag Day). On what other day would it be socially acceptable to eat like you don't plan on living tomorrow, sit and watch parades on TV (no walking required), and celebrate the beginning of the winter holiday season with a tall glass (or eight) of everybody's favorite vegan nog? What a day to be alive...

I'm sure you're all out there enjoying your scrumptious homemade recipes, but I thought I would share some pics from our peta2 feast (you know, to make you jealous and stuff):

DSC02938b.jpg

Tofurky, of course!

DSC02946b.jpg

My first three plates...(notice the vegan mac 'n cheese on all three)

DSC02935b.jpg

Some of the many vegan cupcakes created for the occasion

With meals like these being served all across our lovely nation today, it's hard to believe that some people actually eat dead birds around this time of year! Don't they know it's 2008?

So I showed you mine. What's on your plate today?

P.S. - Still know some bird-eaters out there? Well, we've got you covered with this sweet e-card to send them! They'll be begging for a piece of your Tofurky in no time!

Meet Caroline. She's from England. November 26, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 5 ) | TrackBack

Our friend Sarah who works over in peta2 UK recently did an interview that I wanted you to read. It's with an awesome peta2 Street Team member!
-Pulin

Caroline has been working endlessly hard in a fight to help all animals. She's been active for animals for two years participating in protests and handing out leaflets at school, and she has been vegan for a year. And she is only 16 years old! Caroline's been recognised by other groups for her outstanding work and recently won a Young Veggie Award here in the UK! Something that Caroline has done that's really impressed me is written a superb article on how the consumption of meat is affecting the developing countries in the world; which got published in her local newspaper in Leicester, England.

I got the chance to have little chat with Caroline and this is what she had to say in answer to my questions:

How and when did you first get interested in animal rights?
This time about two years ago. We had been looking at animal testing in science and our teacher was in favour of it. I decided to look into it myself, and as I looked at the PETA and other animal rights websites, I learnt the truth about other forms of animal abuse.

What made you become vegetarian?
I had considered turning vegetarian before as my uncle and his family are all veggies, but it's when I stumbled upon videos of factory farming and actually stopped to think about what we're doing to animals, that I finally changed.

How long have you been vegetarian?
I turned vegetarian two years ago, and then vegan a year later.

What sort of responses have you had from other students at your school that you've passed information out to?
Some other students just laugh about it or start saying about how they'd miss meat too much if they went veggie. Others are really interested, for example I had one guy asking me about where to get cruelty free products after reading one of the leaflets.

Can you tell me about the award you just won for Britain's Best Young Veggie?
My sister Becky nominated me for the award by writing about the stuff I've done for animal rights. I got to meet people from Viva! which was great and I got a trophy and a bag full of prizes! I was very surprised when I heard I had won!

What is your favourite peta2 campaign?
That's a hard one! At the moment I'm starting to concentrate on the veganizing your cafeteria one. But to be honest, they're all great campaigns!

Whose cuter - Nugget or the Woof! Pig?
Both! Although I'd have to say the nugget because he featured on my Art coursework last year.

Thanks to Caroline and anyone else standing up for animals! Why not let peta2 and peta2 UK know what you're up to and you could get featured here too?!
-Sarah

The peta2 Advice Blog: Surviving the Dinner Table November 25, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

Dreading sitting down to the dinner table with your not-too-vegetarian-friendly family? Check this out!

I've been vegetarian for a few months now, and I love it! However, I'm really worried about the holidays. I know my entire family will give me a hard time about not eating meat. I don't want to cause a blow-out at the dinner table, but what can I do? - Worried About the Holidays

Just because our dinner table is free of flesh doesn't mean we can't enjoy a fantastic meal and share our culinary creations with our families. This Thanksgiving, I am bringing a Tofurky Roast and vegan stuffing to Thanksgiving dinner at my Uncle's house. I find that delicious food is a way to anyone's heart, and bringing your own animal-free dishes is a great way for your family to try new things. Once they try your version of a Thanksgiving meal, they'll be sure to stop giving you a hard time! - Shan

Family dinners can be tough—luckily my parents were very tolerant towards my even more 'fussy eating habits' when I decided to become vegetarian. You should definitely be open to a friendly discussion about your food choices, as being vegetarian is a normal everyday thing for you, and hopefully your family will see that it needn't be a big deal. If you've already talked about it and are getting fed up with going around in circles, then it's probably a good idea to set some limits. Point out that there may be other topics more interesting than what you eat if you want to avoid getting further into an argument. Shan's right about offering some of your food to them too—how could they resist!! - Sar

One thing that I have learned (the hard way) is to not start a debate about vegetarianism at the dinner table. Telling your family that eating meat is gross and nasty and mean at the Thanksgiving dinner table definitely will not win anyone over to vegetarianism. Instead, talk up how delicious the vegan options are, and ask your family to give it a try. The way to ones heart is definitely through their stomach! - Lara

When You See A Fur Coat, Speak Up! November 25, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 187 ) | TrackBack

There's possibly nothing more abhorrent than seeing someone in a full-length fur coat. Every time I see someone in a fur coat, I ask them if it's real, and then proceed to drop some knowledge about the industry which kills animals by gassing, trapping, drowning, and electrocution. What do you do when you see someone wearing fur?

(This photo is from something I did a few years ago in NYC)

...So now let me tell you the story of this past Saturday morning.

I was sitting there doing some work and enjoying some soy hot chocolate at the local coffee shop.
These two couples came in.
One woman was wearing a full-length fur coat.
She sat down right in front of me!
I asked if it was real.
She said "no." (an obvious lie)
I said "That's good because no one wants to see animals suffer or be killed by anal electrocution and neck breaking."

The woman's husband got very defensive and immediately started calling me a stupid prick and other names which I haven't heard anyone throw around since middle school. (Mind you, this gentleman must've been at least sixty years old.)
I replied with, "You're a grown man and you're talking to me like that? You really don't have anything else to say?"

At some point they tried to ignore what I was saying just so they could sit in ignorant bliss.
However, I was there first and this lady was sitting directly in front of me so there was no way to ignore it.
Then, I had an idea!
I turned on the Martha Stewart fur video and peacefully went about my work.
(My headphones must've been unplugged because they overheard the audio and weren't thrilled at all!)
Both women's husbands at that point starting saying how I'm an asshole, uneducated, and all that type of stuff.
I explained that I went to Vassar College and have a degree that's all about human rights and environmental issues. And that I was simply trying to talk about compassionate living.
Plus, if her coat was really fake, there was no reason for anyone to take offense, right?

They were furious.
I was amused, yet disheartened by their inability to hold a simple conversation without acting so immaturely!
They stormed out of the place creating quite a scene and everyone laughed at them.
I got back to work and enjoyed the rest of my day!

...I doubt that I made her a member of PETA, but I sure did make these people aware of cruelty to animals and I'm sure they'll think twice before putting on that coat ever again! Plus, everyone else agreed that these fur-loving folks were totally out of line with their cursing and yelling while I sat there calmly just trying to have a conversation.

Please, make sure you say something to everyone you see wearing fur, or at least hand them a leaflet. Do you have a story to share? We'd love to hear it. Post your story below or email it to us at peta2@peta2.com for consideration in future blogs.

-Pulin

We Love Warped Tour & the Eco Initiative: Let's Vote for Them! November 24, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

Oh my, there are so many reasons to love Warped Tour! In 2007 I had the opportunity to spend my entire summer on the tour and it was a hoot for sure! I got to meet some amazing people, saw some great bands, and I also got our tent more active with something called The Eco Initiative. You might have heard that name before or have seen the flags on tents, stickers on buses, people wearing the shirts, or even their tent...they are everywhere—just like the peta2 road warriors!

Check out the tent lurking in the background!

We want to help our friends out and we hope you want to do the same! The Warped Eco Initiative has made it to the FINALS for a $10,000 grant from Ideablob and we want to make sure they win!! They do an amazing job making the tour green(er) and with that loot I'm sure they could do even more amazing things! This is what you can do to help:Of course, recycling isn't the only way to help clean things up! Our amazing road warriors have been spreading the word about the Meat's Not Green campaign. Going vegan/vegetarian is an easy way to clean up this planet AND save animals!

Thanks to everyone that's fighting to make a change!

Sexy Pilgrims, Giant Turkeys, & Delicious Food November 24, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 5 ) | TrackBack

The holidays are a great time to get vegetarianism on people's minds. How are we doing that here at PETA? Well, besides reaching out to people online through investigations, videos, and games, PETA is also out on the road, asking people to leave meat off their plates this Thanksgiving.

Here are our 'Sexy Pilgrims' handing out Tofurky samples and hot cider in Fargo, ND:

And our cute 'Turkeys' giving out Tofurkys to curious passersby in Denver, CO:

Both demos got covered by local media, which is great, because that means even more people learned about the delicious vegetarian options that are available!

So, what will you be devouring on Thanksgiving? For those of you who have trouble convincing your family to eat vegetarian, be sure to go grocery shopping with your parents and help make dinner. Maybe your parents will be more inclined to veganize dishes since you're so willing to help! I know that definitely works in my family. Here are some of my suggestions:
  • Try soymilk and vegan butter/margarine in mashed potatoes—the potatoes will still be creamy and delicious (I like lots of garlic in mine, too).
  • Use tofu in your pumpkin pie. Tofu soaks up the flavor of whatever it's cooked with, so no one will be the wiser!
  • Knock people's socks off with this cranberry salsa (seriously, everyone I know that's tried it loves it). Feel free to make without the vegan cream cheese—it's just as delish.
  • Ask for a Tofurky. Hey—there's no harm in asking, right?
For more suggestions, check this out. And if you have a tip you want to share with us all, comment with it below.

P.S. Fur-Free Friday is this Friday! Get excited!

Hot, Hot, Cold, Cold November 24, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack

If you can imagine going from hot sunny days wearing jean skirts and flip flops to cold snowy days wearing boots and gloves you know exactly how we feel on the Cobra Starship tour.

We started off the week in Fort Lauderdale in lovely 80 degree weather where we hit up Pizza Fusion! They have a vegan pizza right on their menu and they use all organic products!!

The biggest highlight of our week was Victoria, the keytarist from Cobra Starship, signing the Meat's Not Green petition!

At the end of the week we were in Richmond, VA, and it was in the low 30s...burr. Here's Joey freezing while working.

Here I am bundled up just to walk from the van to the venue. I freeze easy.

We have a challenge for the last few weeks of the Sassyback tour. We see a lot of homemade t-shirts with all the bands' names on them. We want to see some homemade shirts with peta2 written on them. Think you guys could do that? If you do, stop by our table and I'll take your picture and post it in my blog.

Our days are just going to get colder as we head up the East Coast and into the Midwest. We hit mine and Joey's hometown of Cincinnati in a few days and we couldn't be more excited! Check out our tour dates on peta2's MySpace and come dance with us!

Stay Sassy

Susie B!

Human BBQ at Princeton University! November 21, 2008

Posted by Ryan | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

As frequent visitors to peta2 may already know, the Princeton Animal Welfare Society is the faaaantastic student group at Princeton University.

This week, the group wanted to organize a demonstration to highlight their "College Veg Pledge" campaign, which encourages students to go vegetarian for one day, to see how simple and delicious it is!

They knew it had to be attention-grabbing, since Princeton students are a busy bunch. Did someone say "human BBQ"?

Princeton%20005c.jpg

Princeton%20003c.jpg

Princeton%20014c.jpg

The event was perfectly timed to coincide with an excellent opinion piece written by group members in the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, so that everywhere students looked, they saw something about vegetarianism!

Looks like someone must have checked out our "How to Start a Buzz on Campus" video... :)

Go PAWS, go!

Free Stuff Friday: Skate Deck and peta2 Stickers! November 21, 2008

Posted by Ashleigh | Permalink | Comments ( 141 ) | TrackBack

skatedeck.jpgHappy Friday everyone! I want to introduce you to my friend Shane Harrison who graciously donated a skate deck he designed for this week's Free Stuff Friday. Shane lives in Georgia, works for Woodward Skateparks, and spends his time making art and hanging out with his animal companions Tasha and Sinatra (pictured below).

Check out his skate deck on the right! Want to win it (and a boatload of peta2 stickers)? Comment below telling me why you should get the prize to be the lucky winner!

Want to learn more about Shane and his animal friends Tasha and Sinatra? Read on . . .

peta2: What are the names of your animal companions?
SH: Tasha is the name of my dog. She has a few nicknames as well. I often call her BIG Black. My cat's name is Sinatra. I gave her this name because of her crazy blue eyes and she has a BIG mouth. She's so loud. She meows all the time and makes crazy noises. She and I actually have conversations. Seriously, we do. We don't know what each other is saying but we know how to chat. Her nickname is "the Mouth of the South".

peta2: How did Tasha and Sinatra come into your life?
SH: Tasha came into my life due to an old friend. I lived with him and his dog kind of fell in love with me and not him. I paid more attention to her so she took a liking to me. An old girlfriend that I lived with wanted Sinatra because she was looking for a cat, and as soon as Sinatra came home, she fell in love with me. I think it's because of the noises I make. I'm a nerd and I'm always making noises or trying to mimic some kind of noise that I hear. That's how we began to talk to each other.

peta2: What is your favorite thing about having these two in your life?
SH: The love and friendship that I get. They both greet me when I come home and they're both excited to see me. They both have so much personality.

peta2: How do you feel about products that are tested on animals?
SH: I'm not too stoked on that idea. Animals aren't going to be using these products, so why are they testing them on animals? What about testing them on people? I'm sure there are people in this world that wouldn't give a hoot about being tested on, especially for a little money.

peta2: How do you feel about people who wear fur? (Especially knowing that fur farms in China kill dogs and cats for their fur.)
SH: It's pretty lame. Modern man can make so much from cotton and hemp and other materials that there's no reason to use fur.

Shane knows his stuff when it comes to animal rights, and it seems like he has some animal magnetism! You can check out his MySpace to see more of his art!

Oh, this contest ends December 12, 2008 and the winner will be chosen and notified by December 19, 2008!

Just so you know...by commenting here, we're taking that as acknowledgment that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Turkey Pardon Fail, Starring Sarah Palin November 21, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 18 ) | TrackBack

The moose-hunting, fur-wearing, pro-aerial-wolf-gunning governor is in the news again. On Thursday, Sarah Palin visited a turkey farm in Wasilla for the traditional pre-Thanksgiving turkey "pardoning." Now, most people probably don't think about exactly how the turkeys raised for Thanksgiving dinner every year meet their maker. But not to worry. Sarah has that under control. In this video, while responding to a reporter who asks about her post-election plans, Palin talks about how she wants to "promote a local business" and do something that won't "invite criticism." While turkeys are being slaughtered. Behind her. ON CAMERA.

Was that one of those "gotcha" questions, Sarah? Because it seems to me that showing the bloody reality of slaughter is just about the worst thing you could do to promote this business. Some people just won't want to eat turkey after watching—especially when this happened the day after PETA released new undercover video from the world's leading poultry-breeding facility. In that video, workers stomp on turkeys' heads, punch them, and bang their heads against metal scaffolding.

This is a country of people who love animals—in fact, 97 percent of Americans believe that farmed animals deserve to be protected from abuse. The more that people are confronted with the ways that animals who are raised for food suffer—from the moment they're born until the moment they're killed—the more that people will start thinking about giving vegetarian meals a try. And then the factory farming industry will need a bigger bailout than the "Big Three."

-Dan

P.S. Sarah Palin should take a cue from our own "President Bush," whose turkey-pardoning this year really was a "mission accomplished."

The Midwest, Chris Drew, and Vegan Cupcakes November 20, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 4 ) | TrackBack

This week with hellogoodbye we hit up the Midwest: Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, etc.

We had our first snow in Chicago, and we also got to go to some of my favorite veg places—all the while telling the Midwest that Meat's Not Green. In fact, every second, animals raised for food in the U.S. produce 89,000 pounds of waste: That's 130 times more than is produced by the country's entire human population. Now that's a lot of poop! I would say too much poop! Want less poop in your life? Try going vegetarian for a week.

We have some pretty hip vegetarians on this tour, like Chris Drew of Never Shout Never. This cutie knows what's up and rocks a Meat's Not Green button!

We also met this awesome chick in Chicago, IL, who was sporting a PETA pin, as well as a 'V Is for Vegan' pin!

And the question that is on all of our minds: Where did I eat this week? Well I had a "save the fish" sandwich at Web of Life in Cleveland, OH:

Casandra got face deep in vegan chocolate cake and Teriyaki tofu from Balasia in Emmaus, PA:

And of course, we stuffed ourselves with vegan cupcakes from Whole Foods:

That says it all.

Jam out

Paige

Standing Up For The Little Guys! November 19, 2008

Posted by Rachel-O | Permalink | Comments ( 4 ) | TrackBack

Here in peta2, there's almost nothing better than getting sent newspaper clippings and online articles featuring our amazing Street Teamers and all of the great things they're doing for animals. So when we got the first clipping from a Street Teamer named Jacob Jarvis, we were really excited — and then we got a second one!

Jacob's only 14, and already he's been pretty busy spreading the word about animal rights in his school, his neighborhood, and to just about anyone who will listen. So I thought I'd ask him a few questions to help inspire some of you who might just be getting started! Check it out!

What made you interested in taking a stand for animals?

Well, I've always been an animal lover, and my mom and I have always had pets around. My entire life I've tried to stick up for animals, you know, save a frog from the middle of the road, put up signs for a found kitty. But the major shove was in 8th grade. My science teacher (who shall remain nameless) told us we would be dissecting. I was utterly disgusted! The night before the dissection, I was researching alternatives that I could recommend to him. Well, I found this great website called peta2 and from that moment on, I was in love!

What are some things you've done at school for animals?

Believe it or not, the best things I've done have been really simple. It was the last day, and I went around with my classes with a little clipboard and some flyers. I stood up in each class before the bell rang and told all the students about KFC and how they treat their animals. My science teacher (yes, that same one) got mad at me and threatened to suspend me for the first week of the next year. After his class was over, I stuck a Kentucky Fried Cruelty sign on his door and ran!

Why is dissection an important issue to you? How did you fight dissection at school?

Anybody who knows me, knows that I am a science geek. I adore it, I'm not gonna lie. But dissection is just wrong. When my science teacher (yep, still the same one) told us about the dissection, I protested immediately. I made little signs and passed them out during school, trying not to get in trouble. He never did give in, and was going to force me to participate but I just couldn't do it, so I took a zero on the assignment.
*peta2 doesn't want you to have to sacrifice your grades to stand up for animals, and you shouldn't have to! You should always work for an alternative, and if it doesn't seem to be working, email us at peta2@peta2.com so we can help!*

What's your message to the rest of the peta2 Street Team?

Not everyone out there has time to go out and organize a demo, but you can do other things. Wear a button or a sticker or carry around some leaflets. It really doesn't matter as long as you get the word out. Oh, and beware, some people don't share our views so you shouldn't try and force your views on them.

Tell us about your favorite peta2 campaign:

Boycott KFC is very near and dear to my heart. It is something that I can fight on a local level and still feel like I accomplished something.

Jacob is awesome! And he's totally right. peta2 is all about simple — from posting a video on your MySpace, to forwarding our e-News, there are so many small things that YOU can do that make a huge difference.

One of them of course is speaking up for the little guys! Cut Out Dissection month just wrapped up, so keep sending in your reports of how it went! And if you're a little behind in the times, it's okay, there's still lots more work to be done! Check out peta2.com to get started!

Stay Loud!

-Rachel

Yup, it's time for another installment of dumb comments we've received here at peta2. You know the drill: Names removed to protect the idiotic parties. Enjoy!

1) i killed a deer and ate it and i have to say it was the best meal of my life. you don't really appreciate what you eat until you have to work to eat it. it tasted amazing

2) You suck! stop kissing toads and get a real job that is productive.

3) YOU SUCK. I LIKE TO WEAR LEATHER BOOTS, I EAT ANIMALS EVERYDAY, I WEAR FUR COATS, STOP INDRUDING IN OUR LIVES.

4) You are a bunch of sick and misguided bunch of individuals. I don't know if it is your parents fault or if you are just naturally stupid. Humans are at the top of the food chain for a reason. Because we can reason. FUAVM

5) YAL ARE FREAKS. animals dont have souls. Yea...they might be cute and cuddley but they were created for us to enjoy. Quit freaking out. the animals used in school dissections were going to die anyways. Go get a name change to freaksareus.com

Which is your favorite? Let me know below!

Undercover Investigator Unveils New Turkey Investigation November 18, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 14 ) | TrackBack

We have a brand-new investigation of a turkey factory farm, and we wanted to let the investigator introduce it to you himself. See what he has to say, then please check out the video.
Marta

The alarm clock on my cell blares out at 1 a.m. I twist in pain. It can't be time to get up yet. I hit the snooze button twice. Finally I roll over and rub my face with my hands, feeling the calloused-over blisters scratching my cheeks. The insides of my eyes and nose hurt from the dust that I could not wash out from the hours I worked yesterday in the barns where turkeys spend their entire lives.

They are crammed into pens, sometimes 600 or 800 to a pen. There are almost 8,000 turkeys in one barn. Each of these turkey farms has two or three barns. The dust inside the barns is sickening. I can't even go in without a respirator mask. I cough and choke from not being able to breathe. I see the turkeys panting much of the time. I think about grabbing one of them and carrying her outside and putting her in the grass where she could breathe and walk freely. It is so sad that they are reduced to this miserable existence just to make some profit.

There are times when I have to hold back the tears. To see the workers torture these animals is infuriating. Today we are loading a truck with male turkeys who have been bred to weigh 80-plus pounds—the same weight as my 10-year-old cousin. I will spend the next four hours watching men slam them into cages on the back of a semi truck in temperatures near 20°F. I have seen these guys stomp turkeys' heads on the concrete. The sound of cracking beaks and breaking bones makes me cringe, but I can show no emotion. I am forced to watch in silent pain as these innocent lives are being destroyed.

Turkey factory farms endorse suffering. They sell death. They make money on abuse. They do not want to show people what happens here. Everyone should know what happens here. I have spent two and a half months in hell so that people will know what it means to have a turkey on the table. Watch the video, and show people the truth. Make this world a better place by reducing pain and suffering. And please do not eat turkey this Thanksgiving.

peta2's New Parody Game: Mama Kills Animals November 17, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

I'm not what you'd call a video game junkie—mostly because I don't give myself the opportunity to be. I get sucked in too easily!

That aside, I absolutely love all the peta2 games we have! I know, I know, I'm probably a bit biased, but seriously, they're awesome. So I'm super-excited to get to tell you guys about our brand-new game! Mama Kills Animals is peta2's brand-new parody of the popular Nintendo game Cooking Mama.

In the game, you can pluck a turkey, chop off his head, stuff him, and more, all to help Mama prepare a Thanksgiving feast. But beware: Things will get bloody. What better time than right before Thanksgiving to get all your friends and family to play this game and see how gruesome it really is to "prepare" a turkey dinner?

So go on, play it now, then pass it on to everyone you know. And also, if you add this banner to your page, you can get 500 Street Team points if you e-mail the link to your page to StreetTeam@peta2.com.

Okay, so tell me, are you meaner than mama? Get playing to find out!

Marta

P.S. I hope you make it to the bonus level. You'll love it!

East Coast Activism November 16, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

This week on the Hellogoodbye tour we hit up the East Coast visiting Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, and of course my home town of Philly, informing Eastcoastians that Meat's Not Green. In fact, if you haven't signed the petition to get warning labels put on meat packages displaying the ways it destroys the environment, do so now! Go ahead I'll wait...

Not convinced yet? Producing a single hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles and enough water for 17 showers. That's more showers than I took all summer on Warped Tour!

And as we all know, there are tons of veg options out there—heck, you know that's my specialty! In fact feast your eyes on "beef" and broccoli from Grasshopper in Boston, and "Chick n Cheese" quesadillas from Govinda's in Philly! Oh dang.

It's that time to give love to the amazing kids we meet everyday! Some Street Teamers came out to the show and showed some love to peta2 and the animals!

And what fun would it be without a silly tour pic? Thanks to Casey, touring guitarist for Never Shout Never, for repping Meat's Not Green—and for going veg!

Burberry: Stop Passing Off Dead Animals As Clothes! November 14, 2008

Posted by Rachel-O | Permalink | Comments ( 14 ) | TrackBack

I love Sarah from peta2 UK! Last summer, we interned together and were pretty much inseparable, so it's no surprise to me that she is full of great ideas—including some ways to educate people about Burberry selling fur, and all the horrible ways animals are abused for the fur industry. Take it, Sarah!
-Rachel

If you haven't already seen the new peta2 feature on Burberry, then I can only assume you've been living under a rock! With a host of awesome bands, all completely fed up with Burberry's abuse of furry animals, Super Furry Animals (great name eh?!), Jamie T, The Rakes, Los Campesinos, Friendly Fires and The Wombats, have all joined the campaign against Burberry by signing peta2's petition urging Burberry to ditch fur from their collection.

It's like Christmas has come early for us here at peta2 UK with all these amazing bands showing their support and compassion for our furry friends! These guys know that animals on fur farms are beaten, drowned, and are killed by poisoning, anal electrocution, and gassing. These cruel methods are ineffective, and animals often wake up while they're being skinned. Check out the full list of bands who've signed:

P.S Who's your favourite band who's signed? I'm keeping it true to my homeland; Wales, and am giving my vote to the Super Furry Animals.

See? Isn't she lovely? But wait, What..? You haven't signed the petition already?! Do it now and tell your friends!!

Also, use one of the banners below, that I made, on your MySpace
or Bebo page and we'll gladly award you with 200 points!

We will also give you 500 points for joining the Boycott Burberry Cause on Facebook! Let us know what you did at the usual address - StreetTeam@peta2.com.

Free Stuff Friday: Win Fable II for Xbox360! November 14, 2008

Posted by Ashleigh | Permalink | Comments ( 316 ) | TrackBack

If you're a serious gamer who hasn't been living under a large, computer-generated rock for the past year or so, you were anticipating the October release of Peter Molyneux' Fable II just as eagerly as I was. The original Fable set the gold standard for the action-RPG genre, and the sequel promised to make that standard, um, even gold-er. Enter to win your copy below!

The shtick of the Fable series is that pretty much every decision you make in the game brings you further down a path of good, or evil, which affects everything from how your character looks to the powers and abilities at your disposal. Go around killing townspeople indiscriminately? Evil. Help the local guardsmen track down warrants for missing criminals? Good. And so on.

The cool part is, this time around Albion, feeding your character meat earns you BIG evil points, and if you play through the whole game as an unrepentant carnivore, your character ends up looking like a reject from a GWAR video in no time:

monster.jpg

In fact, check out this description of a food item, "Dairy Farm Cheese", which you can pick up from a vendor in Bowerstone Market, the main city location in the game: "Nobody knows where the animals whose milk is used to make this cheese are kept. And as long as there's a steady supply to melt on toast or eat with a nice glass of wine, nobody cares." Just like in real life!

Is Lionhead, the company who made the game, run by vegans? Who knows. All I do know is that it's pretty effing amazing to see a game getting serious game-of-the-year buzz with such a strong animal rights message. And that it is taking FOREVER to max out my Skill score. Seriously.

Anyway, comment on this blog and tell me what's in your 360 (or Wii or PS3 or whatever) right now to enter to win a copy of Fable II!

This contest ends November 28, 2008 and the winner will be chosen and notified the same day!

Just so you know...by commenting here, we're taking that as acknowledgment that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

We hit up Chipotle and brought our own vegan cheese and vegan sour cream to add to our yummy burritos! We've also been hitting up Subway and taking our own Tofurky slices. Talk about making it easy to be vegan!

In San Antonio, Heather talked to people about animals rights—that always makes her happy!

And Joey showed off his very fashionable peta2 shirt. You can get your own peta2 shirt here!

Keep checking back for more exciting updates from the road. Check out our tour dates on peta2's MySpace and let us know when you're coming out!

Jared Padalecki Fans Raise Money for PETA! November 13, 2008

Posted by Patricia | Permalink | Comments ( 6 ) | TrackBack
Jared_Padalecki.jpg
Copyright: NPX/starmaxinc.com

Jared Padalecki has legions of dedicated fans, yours truly included, who tune in to Supernatural each and every week to watch him and his co-star Jensen Ackles kick demon ass. Who doesn't want to watch hot guys spew clever dialogue while defending the innocent in a good vs. really, really evil battle to save the world?!

Anyway, a bunch of these fans are not only dedicated to the show but they're also dedicated to helping Jared in his real-life fight against evil. A few years back the marvelous Mr. Padalecki and his adorable dogs Harley and Sadie starred in one of peta2's cutest anti-fur ads ever to raise awareness about what really happens to animals, including cats and dogs like his, before they're made into clothing and accessories.

Knowing that this issue is important to Jared, the crew over at SupportSupernatural.com decided to help spread the word about his efforts to combat the fur industry and managed to raise some major dough at the same time. A big shout out to Lindsay and Heather for organizing the fundraiser and enlisting the help of other fans who generously donated more than $1200 to help us help animals. Pretty inspirational, no?

Ever Wonder What an Animal (Torture) Lab Looks Like? November 13, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 7 ) | TrackBack

Here's a guest blog from Sarah with peta2 UK.

Oxford University in the UK officially stated that its new animal lab is complete—not so good news for the animals. Animal rights campaigners, not just around the country—but around the world, have been trying to stop plans for the new laboratory to go ahead.

You can watch the inside footage of the lab here, where the presenter thinks it's OK that way more mice, rabbits and ferrets will be experimented on than primates—because their lives are worth less...? He also thinks it's OK that the monkeys will be able to look into a corridor for the best part of their confinement! This guy can't be for real—I wouldn't put a mouse in those 'play area' cages, let alone a monkey!

Over 100 million animal experiments every year worldwide have failed to deliver cures or proven to be ineffective, with a whopping 92% of drugs that passed animal trials failed in humans.

Oxford University should cut the cave man crap and look to using more modern, humane and non-animal research methods.

Every creature with a will to live has a right to live free from pain and suffering—every day we make choices, please make sure that yours is a compassionate one.

Our Undercover Investigators Answer Your Questions November 12, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

Remember when we gave you the opportunity to ask our undercover investigators a question? We received some really great questions, so now, here's your glimpse into what it's like for an undercover investigator. We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the two brave individuals who went undercover at this pig factory farm in Iowa (and to undercover investigators everywhere). The investigators hope it will motivate you to make a difference for animals each day in your own way. Here's what they had to say:

What exactly was your reaction when you saw just how badly the animals were really being treated? Did you cry?

Investigator 1: I was horrified and terribly saddened. But I had a good idea of what I was going to see, and I prepared myself for it. ... Because it is so critical to conceal my identity and my sympathy for animals while undercover, I [can only] cry on the inside when I see the abuse and the cruelty. I can never let my coworkers see that side of me. Sometimes, I will let out a good cry at home or in my car after a particularly disturbing day.

Investigator 2: There were some nights I would get home and get emotional about the day's events. You have to hold it inside until you get home. If the other employees see you react in an emotional way, it would blow your cover. The people whom I have met working at a hog farm would never get emotional or upset due to the mistreatment of the animals, and so we must act in that same manner.

How are you able to keep your sanity?

Investigator 1: If I want to do all I can possibly do to help animals, I have to stay sane and focused. If I lose it or explode, that will not help animals. If I let the insanity get to me and destroy me, then I will no longer be an asset to the animal rights movement. I would not be making the best use of my time and my ability to effect change for animals. I force myself to look at the big picture.

Investigator 2: Who said that we do? ;) Truth is, it gets hard. Sometimes the only way to get through it is to take it one day at a time. Even then, there are times when it gets to you, and you aren't sure if you can make it that one more day. But by forcing yourself to go that one more day, that's what makes all the difference. You have to focus on the fact that by being there, you can show the world what is happening, and someday, hopefully, it will stop happening.

To read all of the questions and answers from the investigators, click here.

Do you think you'd be able to handle being an undercover investigator?

Marta

peta2 Has a New Sugar Daddy! November 12, 2008

That's right boys and girls. The celebrity gossip blog popbytes, with their deliciously icky motto, "When culture pops, I wipe it up . . .", has teamed up with our friends over at Neighborhoodies for their new Think Ups project. This is how it goes down: the Neighborhoodies crew chooses one super awesome person a week and asks them to come up with seven days worth of pop culture t-shirt ideas.

This week it is popbytes' turn! Check out Monday and Tuesday. What's the best part about this partnership? A portion of the proceeds from the shirts designed by popbytes goes directly to PETA!

That means you can rock this shirt (like this dude) and know that your stylish self just saved some animals. Sweet!

Is President Bush Showing Support for Turkeys? November 12, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

You know how the president "pardons" two turkeys each Thanksgiving? This year's ceremony marks the 61st anniversary of the presidential turkey pardon, and well, though it's great that two turkeys are spared from becoming someone's main course, what about the rest of the turkeys? I think they deserve the same pardon. A certain someone couldn't agree with me more, and to see for yourself, check out what he has to say in this video:

Other Viewing Options

Heh, OK—so that's not actually President Bush, but there were some good points made in the video—like the fact that turkeys like to have their feathers stroked (hmm...sounds similar to the dogs and cats you share your home with, right?). If your family is still set on having a real turkey as part of its Thanksgiving tradition, ask them to adopt a turkey instead.

Be sure to pass the video along to your family—and while you're at it, why not include these vegetarian holiday recipes? 'Creamy' Chive Mashed Potatoes? Heck yes.

This Thanksgiving, wouldn't it be amazing if, instead of having a dead bird as the centerpiece, every household had a scrumptious Tofurky Roast (or some other equally delectable meat-free turkey alternative)?

The boys in Silverstein came through town the other day on their tour with Chiodos. So we hung out and chatted about animal rights as always. Fun times, but the local pizza place ran out of soy cheese pizza. Dang!

Anyway, the sold out show was great, and I'm excited that Silverstein is hitting the studio to record their next album very soon after this tour wraps up. They have a demo version of a rad new track on their MySpace that they also play live. If you like 'em, check it out!

Lose the Burger, Save a Life November 11, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

Rhea, a high school student in Colorado, sent us a link to something she wrote for her school newspaper earlier in the year.

In a piece called "Lose the Burger, Save a Life," Rhea talks all about how not eating animals, "promotes peace, is good for our bodies, is beneficial to the environment, and the foremost reason to become a vegetarian is the moral obligation to ourselves and every other species." Check out the full article.

You can read all about the benefits in lots of detail at GoVeg.com, and if you're interested specifically in the environmental angle, make sure you take a look at our Meat's Not Green campaign.

I really like how Rhea says, "we will be the perpetrators of violence on a daily basis if people continue to live their lives blindly and carelessly by not changing their diet." It's very direct, and I think people appreciate that honesty, honestly.

Elizabeth and I are going to St. Louis this week to talk to students at the Journalism Education Association / National Scholastic Press Association high school journalism conference. We love seeing talented writers use their skills to not only speak out against cruelty, but discuss the humane options for living cruelty-free. Hopefully we'll see some of you there! We can talk about story ideas, do interviews, get you some stickers and info, and just hang out!

If you have any articles you've written about animal rights, please make sure to send them our way! And congrats again to Rhea for a great piece of writing.

Thanks!

peta2 Wants You To Get Dirty! November 10, 2008

Posted by Rachel-O | Permalink | Comments ( 62 ) | TrackBack

We've all seen it. Whether we're driving six hours to a concert, or driving to a friends house: a dirty car with either a ridiculously lewd or hilarious thing that catches everyone's attention, written in the dirt, mud, snow, or whatever it may be covering the windows and paint of a car.

Never one to a miss a chance to get the word out, we want you to use this opportunity to speak up for animals! Who likes washing their car anyway?

It's pretty easy, instead of writing "Wash Me", "I'm Dirty" or something else totally unoriginal like that, try "Meat's Not Green!" and/or peta2.com and send us a picture!

You'll get 500 points for sending it in to us at StreetTeam@peta2.com, and we'll put your pictures up on our Flickr account! Oh yeah, and we'll think you're awesome.

Think about it as a bumper sticker, but obviously much, much cooler.

Disclaimer: Of course, only do this to your own car. We want to help animals, not get anyone in trouble!

What's Scarier Than hellogoodbye in Drag? November 7, 2008

The meat and dairy industry destroying our environment! That's right my friends. Did you know that farmed animals use more than half the water consumed in the US? That's not very Green is it—wasteful don't ya think?!

Runner up for scariest this Halloween: Our Friends in hellogoodbye in drag!

Did anyone get any sweet vegan candy for Halloween? I didn't get candy (so lame, I know—feel free to donate your extras at the next HGB show), however, I got some soy cheese pizza from Pizza Fusion in Ft Lauderdale, FL.

So I must say I met some of my personal heroes the other day in Orlando, FL. Street Teamers Maggie and Liza are starting an animal rights group in their school, AND they got their school to stop dissection! Maggie used a computer program instead of cutting up animals and got the best grade in her class. Oh Snap!

You can take charge, too, like our friend Forrest of HGB who helped us get loud in Orlando.

Oh and I'm thinking about reinstating soy ice cream Mondays—remember those days? That was the life.

Yes, for too long it's been generally assumed that pirates do nothing more than seek out doubloons and say hilarious phrases like "shiver me timbers!" and "a-yo-ho-ho".

The good people of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society are changing all of that though. These people are the real deal, and using nonviolent methods of direct action, they have been fighting to defend the rights of sea animals for over 30 years.

Free Stuff Friday: Lucky Break Wishbones November 7, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 125 ) | TrackBack

Do you care about animals? Could you use a lucky break? Sick of wishing on stars? I hear ya.

I think we all feel we could use a little luck from time to time (I certainly do!). Well, the folks over at Lucky Break Wishbone have created a wishbone that is most definitely vegan-friendly—the wishbones are completely synthetic. Yup, that's right, there's even a cruelty-free option to the definitely not vegetarian-friendly tradition of breaking the wishbone.

Just think—by using these wishbones, you can make all sorts of wishes about better treatment for animals (though we always recommend you take action as well).

Heck, you could even stick one in the middle of your Tofurky if you so choose (just make sure no one tries to eat it!).

Some cool things about Lucky Break Wishbone:

  • The package proudly states, "VEGETARIANS TAKE NOTE: NO FOWL - NO FOUL."
  • Both the packaging and the wishbones themselves are recyclable.
  • They're made in the USA.
We're giving 5 "lucky" people the chance to win a pack of ten of the wishbones. To win, post a comment below with a wish you have for animals! My wish is that no one would eat a turkey this Thanksgiving. Hey—there's nothing wrong with wishing big, right?

This contest ends on November 20, 2008 and the winners will be chosen and notified the same day.

Just so you know...by commenting here, you're acknowledging that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Vote for Your Favorite Dumb Comment! November 6, 2008

It's time for another little giggle for you. Teehee.

Same as always: Names removed to protect the idiotic parties, and I've thrown some asterisks in the expletives. Enjoy!

1) so guys i just got a motorcycle and let me tell you. this new thing that people call leather is amazing. i love animals so much for providing me with something to protect myself with and another thing, have you tried this new food called fried chicken or steak? its amazing. oh yeah and i just found the joys of hunting rabbits and squirrels and other small animals for food with a large caliber handgun. (a sawed off shotgun works too tho) - suck myballs

2) Dude, shut the f*** up you all, if its dead, dont let it die in vein, eat it. Jesus christ, if god didnt want us to eat meat, he woulda made animals out of grass...not meat. Whinny b****es.

3) Every time I see a ridiculous article about the bulls*** that you guys try to pull I go to the store and buy some chicken, bacon, ham, steak, duck, lamb, and salmon. Then I have meat to last me a full week. It is fantastic because I know that 6 different animals are dying so that I can feed my face for a week. Sometimes you guys pull to much bulls*** too fast and I buy too much meat and I leave it in the fridge for too long (I don't freeze) and I throw out the meat and that animal dies in vain. Sucks. Oh well.

4) People Eating Tastey Animals. PETA Get a life loser. Meat isnt murder...meat is yummy yummy lunch.

5) b**** stfu, majority of the world killes and eats meat. It's f***ing useless to try and ban that. I love meat so F*** YOU!!!!!!!!!

Which is your favorite? Let me know below!

Zombie Attack? What Happens Now? November 6, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 0 ) | TrackBack

If a zombie came near you, how would you react? Well, my reaction was: "Millie (our amazing Street Teamer at the gig), go get him to sign the Meat's Not Green petition!" We were fooled and it was a kind person dressed up as a zombie—pretty weak, but a somewhat brilliant costume.

With the 'dead' rising, we had some very lively action hitting the stages of Taste Of Chaos UK. We Are Fiction are a local band that played on one of the gigs and isn't it weird how their name relates to zombies? Ryan doesn't look like a fictional character so don't mess with him, or he might make the dead rise—there is no guarantee.

If you're in a band like We Are Fiction—any genre—and want to work with peta2, shoot us an e-mail!

With Taste Of Chaos in the UK coming to an end, all the zombies are now back to doing whatever it is they do...and we're continuing with hitting the streets! If you want to help, be sure to sign up to the Street Team and set up a table at your local gig or have people sign the Meat's Not Green petition in a queue at a gig!

Toodles.

Does President-Elect Obama Bring Hope for Animals? November 5, 2008

Posted by Ryan | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

obama.jpgAs anybody who lives on Earth knows by now, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois was chosen as the next President of the United States last night. Many of you have been asking us at peta2 what our thoughts are on the election, so here's your answer!

President-Elect Barack Obama has said "I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other. And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals." Because PETA is devoted to fighting animal abuse and recognizes the link between cruelty to animals and violence directed against human beings, the organization is very encouraged by this statement.

PETA is also pleased that Obama and his wife Michelle have announced that they will adopt a rescued dog for their daughters instead of patronizing a pet store or breeder. PETA opposes large-scale breeding facilities, known as "puppy mills," as well as private breeders who bring puppies and kittens into the world while nearly 4 millions cats and dogs must be euthanized at the nation's overcrowded animal shelters every year. PETA supports animal shelters and encourages all prospective companion animal guardians to visit their local animal shelter.

PETA was also encouraged to see that, unlike other Democratic and Republican presidential candidates in the past, Obama did not pander to the National Rifle Association and other pro-hunting organizations by heading into the woods and shooting defenseless animals.

PETA looks forward to working with President-Elect Obama and the new administration to help make change happen for the millions of animals who suffer unnecessarily in this country. What's next? If his stance on other animal issues is any indication, perhaps the next president will put a tofu chicken in every pot.

- Ryan!

Keep Chi Cheng in Your Thoughts November 5, 2008

Posted by Ashleigh | Permalink | Comments ( 12 ) | TrackBack

According to the Deftones' studio blog, Chi Cheng (friend of peta2 who recently designed our "Happy Families, Not Happy Meals" tee) was involved in a car accident Monday night. He is currently in serious but stable condition in a Northern California hospital and there is speculation that he is in a coma. His band mates are there supporting him, and we ask that you keep Chi in your thoughts and comment below with good wishes for his speedy recovery.

Your Votes Helped Animals November 5, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 8 ) | TrackBack

One person makes a difference with every day actions of compassion, and it's important to understand that we also need a larger strategy to see the day in which animals are free from oppression. Yesterday's election here in the United States proved that the nation is slowly moving from a history of violence and discrimination and towards a more just future for all.

In California, Proposition 2, passed by a wide margin of victory, and it will ban some of the worst cruelties to animals raised for food in that state. The confinement of hens to cages so small they cannot spread a wing, veal calves to crates for their entire miserable short lives, and pregnant pigs to crates so small that they can't turn around will now all be banned by 2015. (These are huge industries, so we need to be realistic about how long it will take to make these changes happen.)

Over in Massachusetts, Question 3 passed, and this means that greyhound racing will be banned there by 2010. Dogs who are used for racing spend about 20 hours per day confined to cages measuring approximately 32 inches by 42 inches by 34 inches. Many of the dogs can't even stand completely upright! These greyhounds are also highly susceptible to injuries including fractures, dislocations, lacerations, and amputations and because they're no longer of use to the industry after they are injured, they are often simply killed. Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for those who exploit these dogs for mere entertainment and profit around the world.

I know many of you worked on these issues locally, so congratulations on a job well-done.

Most of you reading this are in high school and college, and I can't stress enough how historic this election has been. If you continue to dedicate yourself to the cause of animal rights, there's no stopping this movement. We must use our voices and actions to defend those who need our help. It won't be easy, and we know that some multi-billion dollar corporations won't stop abusing animals simply because we ask politely, right? It's going to take every single one of us, and our dedication to liberating animals from the institutions of exploitation which currently enslave them.

We will achieve even greater progress during your lifetime. All we need to do is believe in our potential to make the world a kinder place.

Thank you.
-Pulin

Sea Kitten Stories November 5, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 2 ) | TrackBack

What was your favorite bed time story when you were little?

I really liked The Poky Little Puppy and all those Mr. Men (I identify most with Mr. Nonsense) and Little Miss books.

It would have been cool if I was around some stories with a strong animal rights type of message, though. So that's why I thought it would be nice to mention the sea kitten bedtime stories.

If you have a couple minutes, you can flip through the book online!

Other than the fact that sea kittens are underappreciated animals, the story and images are really cute!

Oh how I love to read!

Fighting Animal Abuse In Your Neighborhood November 4, 2008

Posted by Rachel-O | Permalink | Comments ( 7 ) | TrackBack

As the winter begins here in Norfolk, Virginia, I'm bracing myself for another season with PETA's Community Animal Project (CAP), a program in our Cruelty Investigations Department. This is where PETA staffers volunteer their weekends to deliver straw and sturdy doghouses to dogs kept outside in the colder months. As I think about how eager I am to start again, I think back to last fall and an entry I wrote in my own personal journal:

"This weekend I got the honor of working with PETA's Community Animal Project—or CAP, a program that offers free to low cost spaying and neutering services to low-income families, delivers straw in the winter, and food and shelter all throughout the year for dogs who live at the end of chains or confined to pens in North Carolina and Virginia.

For whatever reason, there is one dog from this weekend that I cannot stop thinking of. I cannot forget. He was a large German Shepherd/black lab mix. We saw him from the street. He was chained tightly to some worn down fencing next to a garage, in a small grassy area of a backyard. His house was a two-tone plastic dog crate, covered in dirt and mud. His living area was a pile of dirt and unraked leaves, and he was surrounded by his own waste on every side. There was no food or water in sight, except for a small plastic baggy filled with raw shrimp. He instantly got up to greet us, his large frame moving fast and his tail wagging. His eyes told stories we'll never understand, and you could tell inside them was hope that we would never leave. The neighbor said the house had been abandoned three years ago, and that whoever owned the house came to "feed" the dog daily. Still, this loving, feeling creature begged us to stay with him, and as we wrote down all of the information we could get, we got up and walked away. We loosened his collar, gave him food, water and straw, and left him behind. We must leave him behind because the law was on the side of misery. (Although when we do find animals like this, in trouble, our cruelty investigators follow up with every case).

Three days have passed now. My life has continued: I've come home, eaten, laughed, played, talked, gone to work, relaxed. It has been day and night, warm and cold.

Still outside, he lingers. In the same place, on the same chain. In the same dark alley way next to the same garage. Smelling the same wretched stench of feces and urine, laying in the same dead leaves as the previous months. His life will never change, for him, simply existing in those horrible conditions is life. From the look of his body and the way he acted, he once knew love, now he knows nothing but memory. Now he knows nothing but loneliness.

For those three nights since I met him, I've thought of him every time I close my eyes. When I'm tucked away in my warm bed, he is still out there. He is still out there in the cold, wet night. He is still waiting for someone to come along and pet him, he is still hoping that one day that love he once knew, will return.

We will return for him, but only to finally end his solace. To end his isolation. We cannot erase his months of betrayal, or his months of depression. We can only alleviate his suffering, not replace it with love. There's not enough love in the world to make up for the wrongs of human beings. If they could understand our language, what could our society ever say? Would we tell them that their lives mean nothing? That they're useless, worthless, nothing? That they deserved to fall asleep every night in the dampness of their own waste? Would we, as a society, tell them that yes, we think that's just fine?

If we truly had to answer for our actions, what would we say?

Two of the thousands of dogs that CAP sees every year.

Fortunately for us, our victims can't speak. Most of only fight for the ones who can, because it makes us feel less guilty. We turn our heads to those who can't because they're simply easier to forget."

So what happens when we can't forget?

Sometimes being in the animal rights movement can feel overwhelming, and that's just part of fighting for such an important cause. Millions of animals suffer every day, but for animals in your local neighborhood, and your local shelters - you can help directly. I spend every Sunday at the local animal shelter here in Virginia, and even though every day working for animals is rewarding, there's nothing quite like finding a new home for an animal who is just waiting for a second chance. Not every community is lucky enough to have a program like CAP, but every one has a shelter. You make all of the difference for animals in those shelters, so find one near you and change a life. Who doesn't love spending hours playing with dogs and cats? Especially ones that are especially grateful to be shown love. Sadly, dogs and cats are often overlooked by some people who believe they have it easier, when in a lot of cases, they have it just as bad. Every day working for PETA is rewarding, but it's always some of the hardest, most gut wrenching work that makes me realize why I fight for all animals.

Please, do every little bit that you can, because they have no other choice to make other than to simply wait.

Stay Loud

-Rachel

Going Green with hellogoodbye! November 4, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 3 ) | TrackBack

Oh what a first week we had hanging with some of the greatest people ever—who are all learning (or helping spread the word) that Meat's Not Green! Did you know seventy percent of the leveled rain forest in the Amazon is used to raise animals for meat consumption? That can't be good for anyone!

We joined our friends from hellogoodbye in California to start the BBQ tour. Like pros, these manly men got right to building grills.

We're also making new friends, like Ace Enders and Never Shout Never.

Jason and Sergio (Ace Enders) and Casey (Never Shout Never) all signed our petition this week to inform everyone and spread the word that Meat's Not Green!

And these rad Texans got involved by getting decked out in MNG stickers!

We'd also like to welcome Casandra to the HGB tour. She'll be out talking to you about what we can do to help save the planet AND animals at one time—like try going vegetarian for a week. You'll help save the rain forests and feel healthier, and you might even want to stick with it once the week is over! If you're already vegetarian, try going vegan for a week!

This week in my tummy, we went to Mr. Natural in Austin, TX—a 100% vegetarian Mexican restaurant. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Peace like a river,

Paige!

How Was Your Halloween? November 3, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 9 ) | TrackBack

So? How was it?! How was your Halloween?

Halloween around here at peta2 was pretty good. We were thrilled that so many of you made animal rights an important part of this holiday. Take a peek at these photos.

Interns protesting at KFC.

Adriana and Arturo using their Trollsen Twins masks!

Shanna's piggy jack-o-lantern.

I think my respect for my chicken chums is getting a bit out of control.

Tell us how your Halloween was, aight?

-Pulin

P.S.- I can't believe that I made it through the whole blog without once making a joke about how Marta still has her scary mask on today at work! (Oops... almost made it the whole blog without saying that... poor Marta!)

Win a Free Tofurky for Thanksgiving! November 3, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 483 ) | TrackBack

If you're anything like me, the thought of having a big, dead, stuffed bird as the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving meal is definitely cringe-inducing—and I'm sure the 300 million turkeys raised and killed for their flesh each year in the US aren't thrilled at the thought, either.

Lucky for you, me, and the turkeys, there are lots of alternatives available, including one of my favorites, Tofurky!

Here are my top five reasons you should eat a Tofurky this year:

  • No animal was tortured in the making of a Tofurky.
  • No one has to stick her/his hand up a turkey's butt. Tofurkys don't have butts.
  • Murder should never be cause for celebration.
  • Tofurky roasts are available practically everywhere. Seriously, check this out.
  • Turkeys will be thankful.
With all that in mind, we want to give you a chance to win a Tofurky this Thanksgiving to share with your family! That's right, five of you lucky people will win a Tofurky Roast, with a side of "Giblet" and Mushroom gravy—it's delicious on top of the sliced Tofurky Roast!

All you gotta do is blog about why you won't be eating turkeys this Thanksgiving (for all of your friends to see!), then leave a link to your blog as a comment below. By commenting with your link, you'll be entered to win one of five Tofurky Roasts with gravy.

The contest ends on November 19 and winners will be selected and notified the same day. Winners will have the choice of free shipping from anywhere in the Continental U.S. or a VIP coupon that will allow them to pick up their prize at a local grocery store.

Just so you know...by commenting here, you're acknowledging that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

Mmm! Good luck!

Marta

In California With Rise Against November 3, 2008

Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 1 ) | TrackBack

Hola! Those of us on the awesome tour with Rise Against and Alkaline Trio have officially hit the west coast. You know what that means: amazing weather, beautiful beaches, and a ton of delicious vegan restaurants (which we often discover from HappyCow.net!).

After soaking up some rays, checkin' out local thrift stores, and getting a tasty bite to eat, we went to the San Diego show where we had one simple message: 'Meat's Not Green!' That's right: if you love the environment and care about the planet you're on, did you know one of the leading causes of global warming is raising animals for food?

You know how we do. Here's James letting some fans know the deal (and giving them some literature to read as they wait in line).

Sarah manned the table inside to give out free info, DVDs with Rise Against and Alkaline Trio, posters, and buttons to anyone who asked!

Last but not least, what would Halloween be without some crazy spooky costumes? These ghouls wanted to help us get the word out—and if you look closely, James' eyes are glowing, too. Spooky!

See you soon! Hope you had a great Halloween!

-Robyn
