Your Chance: Ask Our Undercover Investigators A Question October 16, 2008
Posted by Marta | Permalink | Comments ( 17 ) | TrackBackHave you ever wondered what it's like to be an investigator? Someone who goes undercover in factory farms, slaughterhouses, laboratories, and other animal abusing facilities to film what's really happening for the world to see?
These brave men and women have nothing but my utmost respect. After all, to me, being an undercover investigator seems like one of the hardest jobs out there.
Remember this investigation into a pig factory farm in Iowa? Please check it out if you haven't yet, and ask Hormel to follow PETA's eight-point policy to govern future pig-farming operations.
The incredible people who went undercover for this particular investigation have agreed to answer some questions for you. We hear from curious people all the time who wonder what it's like to be an undercover investigator, so this is your chance to find out. What would you like to ask the investigators? Comment below with your question.
My question would be: How were you able to keep yourself from screaming when the piglets were being slammed into the ground? I would have lost it.
We'll post the answers to 5-10 questions here on the blog (unfortunately, we can't have the investigators answer all of your questions), so be sure to keep an eye out.

how often do you take part in an undercover investigation, and when you do what factors determine which farm / laboratory you investigate?
Also, since this is more Underground activism, does it restrict you from above ground activism?
I am in full admiration of undercover investigators work. The lifes they lead must be stressful, and knowing that they can't liberate the animals would tear me apart. Thank you for all you do!

What exactly was your reaction when you saw just how badly the animals were really being treated? Did you cry?
Posted by: April at October 16, 2008 4:49 PMCan you get arrested and imprisoned if your co-workers or employer discovers that you have an undercover camera on your person and report their findings to the authorities?
Posted by: Eric at October 16, 2008 4:53 PMHave you guys ever after shooting the footage of course, went over to the people who were abusing the animals and taught them a lesson?
What toll does it take on you mentally and emotionally? How do you handle working in facilities that abuse animals & what do you feel towards other workers?
Even though by going into these places and helping people understand what goes on behind closed doors do you still feel guilty just for experiencing it?
Posted by: Liz at October 16, 2008 6:48 PMHi! First off, I'd like to say that you all are truly amazing and have a lot of courage and strength to be able to go in there, and not only see it but experience it for yourself for WEEKS, just for the sake of showing the public what happens behind closed doors.
Anyway, I'm curious to know how/where you hide the cameras? I watched the Ingrid Newkirk: I am an Animal documentary (which was great, btw!) and they show this undercover investigator putting on a belt with a bunch of camera equiptment. Do you cut a hole in your shirt, wear special clothes, or what? How do you keep them from not noticing?
Love you guys! (:

Have you ever asked a slaughterhouse worker how can they feel nothing when they treat animals that way?
Posted by: Carolina Tovar at October 16, 2008 6:53 PMWhat is the most disturbing abuse that you have seen?
Posted by: Paige at October 17, 2008 5:52 AMI would like to know how the investigator(s) got into this sort of work? Did it get any easier after a few investigations? How do you keep yourself from being desensitized to the violence? Even if my questions arent answered, I love you all for your dedication and bravery!! God bless!!
Posted by: Casey at October 17, 2008 7:15 AMhow long does it take to get to be an undercover investigator? Can a volunteer do it? how do you mangage to get through an investigation such as the Hormel suppliers without breaking down and crying in the middle of the factory?
You all are very great and have my complete respect for what you do and the world needs more people like you all.
Posted by: erika at October 17, 2008 1:31 PMWhere/how do you hide the camera so they you don't blow your cover?
Posted by: mega coffie at October 17, 2008 3:05 PMFirst of I admire you for doing yer investigations
:D
it shows people what they support just by eating meat
i wanted to know, how do have the strength to watch the animals get hurt && everything?
if i were in yer shoes i'd probably break down && hurt those f*ckers thats abuse the animals
lol
I have so much respect for you, I don't know if I could ever keep my cool which others abused animals around me.
My question is this: what do you do to unwind at the end of the day/end of an investigation? For example, do you talk through what happened with counsellors, use exercise or meditation etc.
Posted by: Little_Lotte at October 18, 2008 4:15 PMdid they ever try to make u do anything to the animals while u were undercover???
Posted by: david at October 19, 2008 12:28 AMFirst off i'd like to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for all that you undercover investigators do :) You guys have so much strength, courage, and truly a huge heart to show/experiance what you do. you show so many people who wants to know where their meat comes from... and what happens at these horrifying, DISTURBING,disgusting places.. :(
Anyways, I have a couple questions..
How long did it take to train to be an undercover investigator??
The first time you went to ones of these places did you have to go to counseling after you saw what is really going on??
Could you actually believe your eyes?
If that was me i would be absouluty heartbroken. i mean even just READING about what happens at 'factory farms' 'slaugther houses' 'fur farms' animal testing facilaties' and so many more awful places i get sad and cry. But actually having to STAND there,SMELL the smell of intoxicating BLOOD, HEAR the whining and screaming of the animals because they are kept in such confined CAGES, and THEN watch innocent animals being abused then SLAUGTERED.. I would just have SO many emotions running through me.. I wouldn't know what to do fall on my knees and SOB,be angry, or retaliate how do you keep your emotions hidden??
Has beening an undercover investigator made you turn VEGAN or Vegetarian? and have you changed other peoples mind about eating meat? (maybe family)
and my last question (its a opptimistic one:) Have any of these places you went undercover to been shut-down by the law??
xoxo
much love,and so much respect

First of all let me tell you how much I admire you all, I mean, thanks to the footage you get through your investigations a lot of people turn vegan, including myself.
