UK fur bearskins Ricky Gervais Queen's Guards
Today's blog features guest blogger, peta2 UK's Violet.
Britain's most loved funny man Ricky Gervais is a huge animal lover (in particular, he's in love with his cat Ollie—pictured below) and has decided to give Prime Minister Gordon Brown what for over the fur issue, by writing him a letter condemning the use of real bear fur for the Queen's Guards' caps (aka those daft tall black hats the guards wear).

In the letter, which you can read in full here, Ricky wrote: "The issue I am writing to you about today is not a laughing matter" going on to explain that black bears are slaughtered for their skins to supply the Queen's Guards' with their ceremonial caps.
Ricky adds: "Won't you please take the necessary steps to replace the bearskins used for the Guards' caps with a synthetic material? I understand and appreciate the importance of uniforms, but continuing to use real fur in the 21st century is inexcusable, regardless of 'tradition'."
Ricky, ever the animal defender, has in the past expressed his disgust over blood sports saying, "I can't stand blood sports or any cruelty to animals. I've never understood why anybody would get off on seeing a bull speared. I wanted to batter those people with a f**king spade." Ricky, that's why we love you—you call a f**king spade a f**king spade.

This pretty much disproves your one post awhile ago that vegeterians and vegans are more friendlier than vegans as I eat meat and wouldn't want to jab someone with a f***ing spade.
As for the fur thing yeah fuck fur....
Posted by: King of Fiji at September 1, 2008 4:58 PMWhat a cute picture. I'm so glad he wrote a letter to the queen. The queen is just awful. She could make this world a better place if she had a heart....
Posted by: Dawn at September 1, 2008 10:03 PMAnother reason to love Ricky!
Posted by: lilly at September 1, 2008 10:27 PMI personally don't find Ricky Gervais very funny but it's fantastic that someone as popular as him is happy to speak up for the animals.
Posted by: Little_Lotte at September 2, 2008 10:11 AMYea but you're not a vegetarian, Ricky. Any reason why not?
Posted by: Peter at September 10, 2008 12:37 PMI wrote last year to the queen, charles (wingnut) and the army guy and I got back the exact standard letter from each of them. Its a disgrace, thanks for the replies but you could have made it alittle more personal, and actually bothered to take note and do something about it. I still cant believe in this day and age with all the inventions we now have that there isnt a "decent substitute" apparently. Maam, wingnut etc, your full of S**t.
Posted by: Rebecca at September 10, 2008 12:40 PMThe royal family have been known for their sick love of animal blood sports, how can people support them when they have done that? and the hats for the queens guards, well that just goes to show how much they care for animals when they know where the fur comes from!! i hope its true that what goes round comes round and i hope its just as bad what happens to them, people like them i have no respect for FULL STOP!!
Posted by: zaran at September 10, 2008 12:46 PMYes i think it is discusting in this day 7 age that real fur is being used fro the queens guards hats. there are many many synthetic materials availabl. I don't think the royals give a f**** about animals although the Queem with her beloved corgis likes to give that impressions they still support blood sports. I am afraid to say this but I am ashamed of the royale family
Posted by: linda levy at September 10, 2008 1:32 PMi think ricky is brilliant for speaking out on such issues and the queen needs to get in to the real world and see animal cruelty is not necessary and she should use synthetic fabrics instead.
Posted by: emma frost at September 10, 2008 2:40 PMZaran, I totally agree with you :) and as for the queen, shame on her, not only am I ashamed of the royal family but to be called a human, this happens all to often, freely and sadly most cases unstoppaple. The queen may well be ignorant but she is also complacent, wonderful qualities for someone who 'at the top'. i do believe what goes around comes around and I can't wait to see the bad things that will happen to her and the family... F**k real fur, the animals were born with it so leave it on them! You go Ricky! What a guy!
Posted by: Eloise at September 11, 2008 4:13 AMomg its actually real fur??
i thought it was like fake stuff. its so sad.
ricky you rock!!
:]
Ricky,
a big thank you for speaking out for animals
a man with a big big heart!!
more people with influence should do the same!
people who harm - will receive harm!!
what goes round will come round again on you!
Cruel people will all have their day of reckoning
(including the Royals} after all what luck have they had amongst all their families??
i feel very strongly about animal cruelty (i'm vegan)
i think it is good ricky has sent this letter however
i still don't understand why he is not vegetarian? anyone have an answer for this?
i haven't seen anyone ask him in an interview

I'm sorry, but I think the queen is quite ignorant.
She honestly doesn't do anything. And after all these endless letters that are being sent to her, she hasn't done a damn thing about it.
It screams ignorance!
