vegetarian college dorm cafeteria weight loss freshman 15
There's a wonderful opinion piece being printed in college newspapers across the country, from the University of Alabama to the University of Hawaii, written by Skinny Bitch coauthor, and all-around badass, Rory Freedman.
The piece takes on the biggest issue incoming students face at school—the tragically common weight gain we call the "Freshman 15".
Well gee, what could possibly be the best way to keep off those unwanted pounds? Why, going vegan, of course!

Click HERE (or on the news clipping above) to view the full piece.
With Rory's signature, no-nonsense attitude, the article rips through the myth that people can be healthy, fit, and beautiful while still gorging themselves on dead animals and things that come out of them. Come on now, you all know that just doesn't make sense. :)
It's a great read, so when you're done, make sure to pass it along to all of your friends!
- Ryan!
P.S. - I know I lost a lot of excess weight when I went vegetarian. How about you?

Yes I did!
I lost a lot of weight, and I feel better too. :]
Posted by: mega at September 22, 2008 3:20 PMYep, I did. I was on a shit load of unnecessary meds by some quack of a psychiatrist (I hope someone sues him, seriously) and gained a ton of weight. I mean a lot, I went from a healthy 150 lbs. / 68kg or so (and Im 5'7" / 1.70 m tall!) to like 170 lbs. / 122 kg because the meds made me eat ridiculous amounts of food, and made me lethargic. I'll save the gory details but it was terrible. That was about 1.5 years for me before I became veggie in Feb. '02, and the weight was falling off me before that, but even still... it was really coming off when I was a vegetarian. And I've been vegan since 1/1/08, but I still have a good 20 lbs. / 9 kg. to lose. It definitely helps to be veg though, make no mistake.
Posted by: Megan at September 22, 2008 3:40 PMFew corrections: I meant 270 lbs., not 170. And I became vegan on 1/1/04.
Posted by: Megan at September 22, 2008 4:11 PMI lost a little weight after going vegan.:)
Posted by: Kelly at September 22, 2008 4:35 PMAs some I also lost weight but as heard before I didn't do it to lose weight. I Lost around..maybe 10-20 lbs... That was with exercise, gym class, and regular school day walking.
Posted by: Ronni at September 22, 2008 5:42 PMI didn't lose any weight whatsoever, but that's alright. I did it for the animals and the environment. =]
Loved the article. And I'm proud that it was published in UAB's paper, representing! :D
The “freshman 15″ is the term used to describe the extra weight that is often gained by students going off to college for the first time. For many of these students, it is the very first time they have lived away from home and experienced so much freedom. Emotional eating, late night eating, cafeteria food, drinking, and lack of exercise all combine to create that perfect environment for packing on the pounds!
Posted by: Chan at September 23, 2008 12:57 AMI did. I was pretty chubby when I first started, and I dropped a lot of weight really quickly. I'm now a good size, and love it that way. :)
Posted by: Carina Strøm Smith at September 23, 2008 7:01 AMI've been a vegitarian for just over a month now and I've lost a good three pounds so far :)
Posted by: at September 23, 2008 6:39 PMtrue. i lost almost like 20 pounds and im still losing it i feeel way bettter then i used to feel when iwas chubby.
Posted by: maira hernandez at September 23, 2008 10:51 PMthis is very true.. i lost over 30 pounds when i went vegetarian 2 years ago, and my dad lost over 40. best decision of my life.
Posted by: elliott swatzell at September 25, 2008 9:49 AMI liked this article, (:
It was actually a bit humorous.
I've been a vegetarian for over a year.
I weighed 97 pounds when I started, and I was 5'3.
and I weigh the same now, but now 5'4.
Oh MY BROCCOLII! lol, not funny -.- anyways, i thought about this club and going vegan. It's hard for me since im asian, you know? So i am actually going to try as a freshman and as long as i can i will try not to eat meat to become a true VEGAn like you guyss!!!
Posted by: Joanna at September 26, 2008 9:04 PM97 pounds and 5 foot 3? OMG you must be really skinny! i'm 99, and 5 foot 0...
but I guess it's the common thing for vegan diets.
however, some other people still unchanged/gain weight after becoming veg. This is usually because: using oil in cooking to increase food's taste (esp if you switch to Asian veg food!), eating high GI cereals n stuff, and increase sugar content (again, just to make your soy milkshake taste better). Hm....

I like the article, it's a great read. I actually didn't lose any weight after I went vegetarian, but I don't care; I didn't do it for weight issues.
