Texas Officer's Poor Behavior Contributes To Dog's Death August 19, 2008

I'm usually pretty good at keeping myself from getting really worked up over situations, but I was filled with sadness and anger when I saw this video. A San Marcos, Texas, police officer stopped a man who was driving nearly 100 miles per hour down the interstate with his girlfriend because their teacup poodle, Missy, was choking. Michael Gonzalez was trying to get Missy to the emergency vet, but Officer Paul Stephens detained them for at least 15 minutes, and as this ABC News story states, 3-year-old Missy died as Gonzalez waited for the officer to issue a citation.

The video of the incident is absolutely unbelievable. Stephens seemed to show no sympathy for the situation—he even said, "It's a dog. It's OK. You can get another one. Relax."

A dog is a member of the family. I think anyone would be outraged to see how Stephens acted in this situation. I can't believe someone could be so callous when Gonzalez and his girlfriend were clearly in a state of panic to get Missy to the vet. If I were in Gonzalez's situation, I would have been flipping out, too. Wouldn't you?

Please write to San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams, asking him to ensure that his officers are trained, and that departmental policies are amended or enacted, so that the community and its animals are afforded the very best quality of consideration in the future.

Seriously—I can't believe some people are this insensitive.

Marta

I'm glad they were pulled over, and frankly, I'm glad the dog died. Maybe now they'll think twice before endangering multiple human lives. Regardless of what your twisted vision of morality may be, the life of an animal is worth less than that of a human being, especially when the lives of innocent drivers are at risk.

Go ahead and write to the police chief, I'm sure he'll be fascinated to know that you have so little a life, and so poor a perspective of justice that you believe the wellfare of your pet justifies the death and endangerment of other human beings.

I'm glad you aren't in charge of anything important in the course of humanity.

It's hard to believe that these are the jerkwads that have authority over us. That cop should have escorted them to a vet, so they could get their faster. He didn't take anything seriously, and he couldn't look past the fact that the guy was speeding, even if their was a dying being in the car.

Oh that part where he says "It's just a dog, you can get another one". It makes me grit my teeth. I REALLY hope he gets his cop license revoked, because we don't need people like him, that doesn't care about a being's life, to look over us. He is definitely not qualified.

What an a$$hat!! I'm a pacifist but if it was my dog that was dying I would've punched that cop in the face!!

I do see the cop's side though, speeding is very dangerous but there was no need for those offensive comments.

If you have a dog in your family please read the Blue Cross leaflet about basic First Aid for dogs:

This is disgusting. This horrible poor excuse for a cop should be in jail.

That is so horrible. If that ever happened to me I would never forgive that police guy again. He is a loser.

Roland, what a complete idiotic moron you are. Why visit peta2? You said you're glad the dog died. Even if they were speeding, if you were an animal lover you would not be "glad the dog died." The dog was the innocent party in all of this and because of a stupid human (your race) he suffered unnecessarily and died at the hands of an idiot. Well, at least Paul Stephens will not be alone in this world. There are at least two heartless, words cannot describe the stupidity humans out there. You should get his number so you can brown nose him some more...

Oh my gosh. The poor dog. What the officer should have done was write them a ticket for driving if he was that wound up about, while escorting them on their way to the vet. To think that some one who we should be able to trust with our safety doesn't give a damn about any other living being makes me question how much we should be able to trust him with. Life is life no matter what form it takes, and should be valued.

Grrr! People like Roland are the reasons people say "get a life" because visiting a website like peta2 is just plain stupid if you dont believe in what they are saying. It doesnt make people think that you are saying something right because you are a loser that 'needs to get a life!' I mean what is the difference between a dog and a human? If you look deep inside the human has a spirit/life and so does the dog. So what is the difference between a life and a life? Hmm I wonder... As I cleared up before GET A LIFE ROLAND because this only makes you look stupid to all the people that actually go onto this website for a reason.

Animal Cruelty
Cruel treatment also includes situations where a person has failed to act or failed to provide care for an animal. Failing to act or failing to provide care rises to the level of cruelty when it involves either: (1) failing to provide necessary food, care or shelter; or (2) unreasonably abandoning an animal.

That is awful! Police officers who abuse there power should immediatly be taken of the force. I know people who speed just for the heck of it, 100-120 mph on the freeway for no reason, and yet if they get pulled over, the officer doesn't come out screaming or harrasing the suspect as if he just held up a liquer store or something the way this cop did(if you watch the video). The pig should've just asked why he was in such a hurry, told him that he was endangering other's lives on the road, gave him a ticket or let him go QUICKLY. Or even better, escorted him to the hospital and dealt with the traffic violation once the dog was in care of the vet.
This is just another episode of a pig abusing his power. Rediculous!!!! My heart goes out to that Mr. Gonzalaz
