Pamela Anderson Tries KFC's Classic Vegetarian Sandwich August 5, 2008

Who else was glued to E! Sunday night for the premier episode of Pamela Anderson's new show, Pam: Girl on the Loose? I love that the show opens with her bleaching her own hair! And how cool was it that she was just chatting with the people at her yard sale (all the proceeds came to PETA, btw). I wouldn't expect to see too many celebs of her caliber doing that, which is just one of the many reasons that Pam's so cool. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Yesterday the blonde bombshell was in her home country of Canada where she and some local activists popped into a KFC to try their new faux-chicken Classic Vegetarian Sandwich.

In case you haven't heard, the United Purchasing Group of Canada entered into an agreement with PETA to reduce the suffering of chickens and dramatically improve animal welfare standards. And since these are the folks responsible for coordinating the purchasing of all chickens for KFCs in Canada this is HUGE. (Of course here in the U.S. and in other parts of the world we're still calling for a boycott of KFC until they make simple changes to reduce the suffering...you'd think this would be a no-brainer.)

Pam's been a driving force behind PETA's KFC campaign for the past five years. Thanks to her efforts we've been able to draw even more attention to the hideous acts of cruelty perpetrated by KFC suppliers. So I'm not even the slightest bit jealous that she got to try one of the amazing new sandwiches and I still haven't...OK, maybe I'm just a little bit jealous. Alright, I'm a lot jealous. Hey, Canadians! Ship some of them down here already, why don'tcha?!

P.S. If you're in Canada be sure to try the new Classic Vegetarian Sandwich— you can get a coupon here—but please don't rub it in our faces.

This is the exact reason I will no longer support PETA!

and why exactly would you support KFC by buying this sandwich? because they're making a feeble attempt at placating activists? what the heck is wrong with PETA? you guys are a bunch of spineless weirdos. and you exploit women while being against exploiting animals. news: women are animals, too!

by buying these... "Classic Vegetarian Sandwiches"
we are still supporting KFC
and giving them even more money to torture animals
which is totally what Peta is against right?

No matter what, KFC wont change
in my opinion Peta has taken a huge leap backwards
and also what does KFC believe they will achieve buy making a vegetarian/vegan burger?
make us happy?

The burger is really yum!!
I worry sometimes that they fry the veggie burgers with the regular ones though, hopefully they don't!
If you're in Canada, PLEASE GO GET ONE!
When I went, the employee didn't even know they had a veggie sandwich.
Support and stuff so that they keep it on the menu people!
Ask for it without mayo and bring some Vegenaise with you! ;D

I really love what Pam does for animals. Unlike Jeannine, I will always support PETA for doing everything they can to help animals.

Alot of these comments are really ignorant. We need to realize that changes happen in baby steps. The world isnt going to become vegan overnight.

This is a pretty giant baby step if you ask me. Not only does KFC now have a vegetarian option, they have made huge changes to the way in which the animals are being treated. That's more than we can say for pretty much any other fast food chain out there.

Buying a veggie burger from KFC is NOT going to cause more animals to be killed. If anything, we could DECREASE the amount of animals being killed if more people would opt for the veggie version.

The more veggie burgers they sell, the more veggie options we will start to see. If it does well enough, other food chains will follow their example.

We should support and embrace every change, no matter how small it may seem because if we dont, bigger changes will never happen.

I am vegetarian but not vegan. This item is delicious. It does taste like KFC and it satisfies my cravings. It is cross-contaminated, but so is everything else you buy in any restaurant unless you eat strictly at vegan restaurants that don't even bring in animal products (the teenaged line cooks do not usually know or care to conform to our views of how food should be prepared). No animals were harmed in the production of this product. It is kinda gross that it may come in contact with splashes of animal fat, but that is part of life in the real world. My personal decision is to continue to support this win. I also eat the BK veggie burger and the A&W swiss veggie deluxe regularly. Some of us do appreciate the work PETA has done.

Yowza, some of those comments sound angry.
I'm a vegetarian and not a big fan of junk food, so I'm as skeptical of KFC's intentions as the rest of you.

Yet the future of Vegetarianism does not lie in segregating off from the mainstream. Rather, veg alternatives should and will be available EVERYWHERE, saving countless animals simply by being offered as an option. Even if you don't necessarily support the parent company, buying veg alternatives sends a strong message to marketers than we want veg options on menus. Perhaps in the future, I won't have to ask "special permission" just to have a veg option served to me on a flight, or tiredly ask a waitress if the ingredients of a salad are REALLY vegetarian (and get an answer like 'what's rennet?' or 'not sure.') For every veg option offered, less meat is needed.

Sure, KFC can do more. WAY MORE. But the point is, vegetarian alternatives should not be shunned since they make going veg a lot easier, affordable--- and way more practical!
Even if you don't want to eat junk food, this is good news for vegs and potential-vegs. The parent company can always do more, but remember that not everyone has trendy veg-certified restaurants and eateries in their area (I didn't!) Most of us depend on meat-eating families, who aren't too excited about tofurkey and are uncomfortable in veg-only establishments. I convinced some self-proclaimed "carnivores" in my family to try veg simply by bringing them to places with veg AND meat options... where they didn't feel out-of-place and could choose to try veg food, rather than being forced to by a veg-only menu.

Comfort, accessibility and practicality ultimately determine if someone stays veg. Therefore, bringing veg into the mainstream is not a bad idea... traditional vegs will go to places they trust, but new vegs could start out at these less conventional places.

I am vegetarian and I would never give any of my money to KFC. Do you know how they cook these faux chicken "burgers"? They put them in the deep fryer WITH THE CHICKEN. So as Jenny posted that she was worried the patty may come in contact with "splashes of animal fat," it comes in contact with a whole lot more.
