Major Victory for Animals in PETA's KFC Campaign June 1, 2008
Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 17 ) | TrackBackThanks to the hard work of caring people around the world—especially in Canada—we're now ending our Kentucky Fried Cruelty boycott in Canada. The boycott everywhere else in the world is still on, though!
Basically, following months of closed-door negotiations between PETA and the company that coordinates the purchasing of chickens for all Canadian KFCs, the lives and deaths of all chickens killed for KFCs in Canada will be improved by a historic new animal welfare plan.

According to the new plan, the company that coordinates the purchasing of chickens for all Canadian KFCs will take the following actions:
- Ensure the phasing in of the purchase of 100 percent of chickens from suppliers that use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK)—the least cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed.
- Improve the audits used to monitor chicken suppliers to KFCs in Canada to reduce the number of broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds.
- Urge the chicken companies supplying Canadian KFCs to adopt better practices, including improved lighting, more space for birds, lower ammonia levels, and a phase-out of growth-promoting drugs and breeding practices that painfully cripple chickens.
- Form an animal welfare advisory panel to monitor the changes and recommend further advancements.
The majority of KFCs in Canada are also offering a faux-chicken menu item in their restaurants.
The boycott will continue in other countries where KFC has restaurants, including the United States, until they adopt the same standards. If you're outside of Canada check out some more ways to step up the pressure and sign the petition here.
Thank you. It's so clear that your hard work is making a difference!

This is great news!
It just comes to show that what PETA2 does really helps. It encourage us to continue fighting for the animals, because change is actually possible.

Posted by: alex vegan at June 1, 2008 9:35 PMThat is awesome!!! I feel so proud, me and my Brother have worked so hard against KFC, I feel like my efforts have finally paid off. Everyone is saying how being vegan and protesting against KFC doesn't do anything, but this proves them wrong! This was like the main Peta2 campaign I focussed on, I got over 400 people to sign the KFC petition, I organized doezens of protests, got the Kentucky Fried Cruelty Tee-Shirt, tabled at concerts with just KFC literature and Even made a video on how KFC treats thier chickens! I feel so so so happy to know that all the hard work that peta2 Canada street teamers have done has finally paid off! congrats everyone, this is a historic moment, I will never forget June 1st lol!

Posted by: Monisha at June 2, 2008 10:54 AMThis is FANTASTIC news! I'm so pleased - go Canada! I wish our KFC's would do the same. Besides, I'd love a veggie 'chicken' wrap. =P
Well done PETA, and well done everyone who's helping!
that's great. but it'd be nice if they would stop killing chickens all together.
Posted by: lilly at June 2, 2008 1:18 PMWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Well done to all the Peta2 Street Teamers, especially our Canadian friends :o)
Posted by: Little_Lotte at June 2, 2008 2:12 PMI'm very happy that a big company such as KFC agreed to change, but I don't see any "win" here. Millions of birds are still being killed, whether they're killed nicer or not shouldn't matter- the killing must stop.
Posted by: kibbles at June 2, 2008 3:27 PMTHIS IS SO AMAZING!
GO CANADIANS.
GO CHICKENS.
GO VEGGIES.
STANDING OUT IN THE CANADIAN WINTER IN FRONT OF KFC WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT!
