Have Fun Tabling Local Shows June 10, 2008

Ryne is a seventeen year old Street Team superstar who loves to table local shows in Illinois. Here's what he has to say about his experiences ...

How did you get interested in tabling shows?
Well I have been involved with PETA for quite awhile. I've organized tons and tons of demos against KFC, the circus, and the rodeo. I've also started my own animal rights group at my school and another group for people in the Springfield area to get together and campaign for animals. I've also been seeing local bands perform for a long time and felt tabling would be a great way to reach out to people. I get to enjoy music I like and do something positive for animals at the same time. It's a win win.

What is people's response when you ask them to sign the petition?
A lot of people had no idea how animals were treated (for KFC) and I would have to explain to them how their animals endure all kinds of abuse and suffering.

Are the bands supportive?
Most are. The lead singer of one poplar band in Springfield, Midnight Fall, is vegan and has stated that he totally supports our cause. I think most people we've talked to have a lot of respect for anyone that is going to be so active for a good cause.

What are your favorite bands?
I have a wide variety of bands that I like. I luv Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie, Ok Go, Regina Spektor, Alkaline Trio, Silverstein, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Goldfinger (John Feldmann is my hero :D), Morrissey, Earth Crisis, Active Slaughter, Resist and Exist, The Used, Lamb of God, Chiodos, and The Devil Wears Prada. I'm also a big fan of techno and trance. Benny Benassi, Paul Van Dyke, and Cascada are some of my favs. I also luv the soundtrack to Queer as Folk.

What are your favorite foods?
Tofutti Cuties basically rock my life. I pretty much love foreign food : Lebanese, Greek, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Veggie Sushi, Veggie Fajitas.

If you want to be like Ryne and table local shows, drop us a line and we'll send you petitions and anything else you need to get started. Have you ever tabled at a show before? If so, post below with how it went!

P.S.- I like this new video from Last of The Believers featuring former Rise Against guitarist Chris Chasse.

Sometimes I get a kick out of the absurd stuff that I read. A few minutes ago I was reading something on a go vegan sight, about how fish are "good natured", have feelings, and yadda yadda yadda. Do people that subscribe to that kind of belief stop to think that the entire animal kingdom is symbiotic eat and be eaten environment? That cute "good natured" fish lives off of eating other organism, smaller fish, and other sentient beings. Fear, pain, and death are natural. I don't condone animal cruelty. But I do believe that there are many farms and places out there where animals are raised in a healthy, good environment, and then quickly and efficiently “dispatched (I like that word, but killed works too) to provide food and sustenance for my family and myself. Not all farms are the admittedly horrible and grotesque butcher-shops that are posted on PETA, Peta2, and similar sites. You are offering a very slanted and sensationalized view of farming, in order to further your cause and illicit support from an often over-sensitive and under-informed following.

I am not slamming the vegan choice or lifestyle, or the animal rights movement, but I do think it is comical when people of this kind of belief tell me how bad of a person I am simply because I am continuing to eat meat and other natural edibles from the animal kingdom. I enjoy tofu, soy, fruits, vegetables, and all of those wonderful foods. I also enjoy a delicious steak (I prefer it to be cooked medium rare), all dairy products, fish that I catch out of mountain streams and moose when I get the chance to economically provide some protein for my family. So, while I won’t slide my plate with scrumptious poached salmon to your side of the table, do me a favor and don’t tell me that this good natured fish never ate another sentient being and I therefore did not have the right to eat it in return. Thanks.

Chris, so you're telling me that your morality as a human being out in the world is based on what fish do in streams? Doesn't seem logical to me.

All we're saying is that where more compassionate choices are available, they should be made. Factory farms represent the vast majority of flesh people eat in restaurants and grocery stores. Sure, some places may be a bit better than others, but at the end of the day all these animals do feel pain and suffer, and we have no right to take their life from them.

"A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral."

Aw, bless lil Chris! One day when he's all grown up he'll realise that his little statement there was wrong. We shouldn't mock him for it. :)

pssssh, i agree with Daryl. We shouldn't make fun of Chris just because he's ignorant. (And wrong)

I'm glad not all guys are like Chris. Thank goodness there are some nice intelligent vegan guys that actually have a heart . I'm still shocked that some even exist!
