PETA animal rights factory farming burberry 30 Days
Did you watch the "Animal Rights" episode of 30 Days last night? If so, I told you! Wasn't it amazing? Sugar!
If you didn't watch, I disown you. No, not really, but I will if you don't catch the rerun!
Want to know what George (the hunter) had to say about the show? Look below!
When you were first selected to participate in this show, what did you expect the experience to be like?
I was pretty scared. I expected to be surrounded by people that just wanted to argue for a whole month. I'm not afraid of an argument, but I thought the numbers were stacked against me. All I was told was that I would be totally immersed in the animal rights movement. As far as the people I would meet, I expected a lot of angry people that yelled a lot. I figured girls and guys alike would be hairy-legged sandal-wearing hippies. For the most part, I was mistaken.
How did your opinion of animal rights activists change after your 30 days with the Karpels?
I realized almost immediately that animal rights activists, PETA members specifically, were very normal folks. That being said, there are some out there, just as with the factory farms, that give everyone involved a bad name. I learned about several examples of the abuse, neglect, and suffering that occur in factory farming. It's not a pretty industry, and if people were able to experience what I did, you might see a major change.
Are there any animal rights issues that are particularly important to you now that you hadn't thought about before staying with Melissa and her family?
I am aware that there need to be changes in factory farming, but aside from veganism, I haven't heard about a practical alternative. I personally prefer to buy my meat and produce from grocers that support the smaller local farms. The Burberry demonstration was hard-hitting, but we don't have very many fur coats in North Carolina. The one subject that I find the most offensive is vivisection. I can't give away anything about the show, but I had no idea how unnecessary it was. Tissue samples are infinitely more effective. For the sake of money, it seems people are abusing animals just because they can. They should be ashamed of themselves and pray that they never have to answer for their actions.
What are your views on the tactics that PETA uses to draw attention to the suffering of animals?
One area where I think PETA could use some P.R. work is separating themselves from some of the other animal rights groups out there. The term most people relate to animal rights is PETA. Anything that happens for the sake of animals, regardless of how offensive it is, gets hung on the neck of PETA. Consequently, most people think PETA people are nuts. I believe PETA does it the right way: education. They keep it fun and provide people with information.

Thanks George!

Did any of you watch the show? If so, what did you think?

i watched it;
thought it was quite amazing how the guy changed his views about us.
i watched it at 10 and then the rerun at 11 =P
but i cried at the begining with the cat in the lab and in the middle of the show with the baby cows =[
but i watched the show enjoying a salad and cup of almond milk =]
I liked the show itself. I wish there were more shows on animal cruelty that were shown on TV not only for me to watch but for others to also to be educated on the horrors that happen in factory farming as well as the deal with animal testing. I hope non-vegans who saw this show have a new outlook on animals, possibly even converting to vegetarianism or veganism. If it weren't for the footage on animal cruelty, I would not have become a vegan. Though they are disgusting and cruel, they're important to watch. But back to the show, I liked George I just disagree with his hunting tactics ...he said he changed but he'll still hunt...I disagree with that to the extreme...
If you haven't already, get involved with animal rights!!
Posted by: lilly at June 18, 2008 9:19 PMI LOVED that episode!!!!!!!! I was so glad that George realized all of the horrible things that factory farms do and actually helped PETA's cause. Plus watching him jump around in a chicken suit killing Colonel Sanders was priceless! =]
Posted by: Allison at June 18, 2008 9:24 PMI watched the show and I thought it was amazing. I watched it with one of my nonvegetarian friends and argued with them the whole time but they learned a lot from the show and I was satisfied:)
Posted by: at June 18, 2008 10:31 PMi thought the show was great, it showed different views of the society, and hilighted the mojor conflicts that animal rights activists are trying to dispose. The show also supplied facts and information that the average peron doesn't know, there was a great sense of truth and reality.

Posted by: Taylor at June 19, 2008 6:35 AMI hope it's on UK Freeview TV soon but I expect I'm going to just have to wait a while :o(
I may see if I can find it online somewhere though as I'm really interested in seeing it.
I agree with George's last comment, many people think AR activists, especially PETA, are crazy and this is because of the actions of a few individuals.
Unfortunatly, because I live in the UK I don't get to see it. But, reading the interview it's obvious that George went through a masive change. If only more people could get to have an experience like George did...
Posted by: Natasha at June 19, 2008 11:56 AMI thought that it was a great show! It got the word out further and answered a lot of questions for the uneducated people. It explained very well many people way of life and their brave choices. It showed that people can change, even the most extream oppisites can be changed. George is a great guy and I'm so very glad that he participated in this show. I hope he goes on with his knowledge and holds his head high. I hope that he continues to believe in us and what we do and helps spread the Peta name! Great show!!
Posted by: Sara at June 19, 2008 12:11 PMI luved that episode i thought Sugar was cute. I love how Sugar got attached to George. And I hope he thinks of Sugar every time he eats a hamburger.
Posted by: Erin at June 19, 2008 1:11 PMThat show was amazing! the veal calves part really hit me hard and reminded me why i was vegan. and sugar was awesome! i bet if he had spent another month with them, they could have gotten him to go vegan. too bad he still hunts though... i'm gonna watch the next show where the conservative mother lives with a gay couple too! :D
Posted by: david at June 19, 2008 3:02 PMi watched the show. it was so heartbreaking. i mean ive seen videos but i never knew they left the carcasses on the side of the road or animals alike to be left for dead.
and sugar the cow. he was so cute. im getting a puppy on monday. its a terrior chiuana(sp) mix. i wanted to name him sugar but my mom wants to name him deuce....such a weird name.
peta was on E!'s the daily ten. about the jess simpson stuff. they showed anthony kiedis(my future husband) and leona lewis because they won sexiest vegetarians alive on peta.org
weve been in the public eye alot lately. first about the trollsens, then 30 days, and now the whole real girls eat meat.
atleast we are getting our names out there and hopefully recruiting new veg. people.
Posted by: codi at June 20, 2008 1:25 PMI used to be a vegetarian, then i only didn't eat red meat, and after watching this 30 days episode, I'm straight back to total vegetarian and will not be eating meat ever again.
Posted by: Sam at June 20, 2008 5:20 PMUnfortunately, I wasn't able to watch it because it comes on too late before I have to go to bed. I hear it was good though.
Posted by: Danielle at June 20, 2008 10:55 PMThis episode was amazinggg. I really love 30 days in general and think it's an awesome concept for a show. This episode made me cry when the baby cow took his first steps outside. It was amazing.
Posted by: Rebecca at June 21, 2008 2:55 AMI loved it! I did cry also. lol. but I was so happy to see something on t.v that i knew almost everything about. AND my ppl were on t.v!
Go George!
Posted by: alex at June 21, 2008 2:24 PMI saw that it was on but something sad was going on and I didn't want to see it...
Maybe I'll suck it up and watch the rerun.
I watched a few minutes of it; I happened to turn it on when they were looking at the dead baby cows. =[ I had to change the channel because I started crying. I can't really stomach that kind of thing.
Posted by: Stormie at June 22, 2008 12:57 AMSugar was so important in George's change of heart. Aside from the fact that he was so adorable, it was important for George to experience an animal so strongly affected by the meat industry.
I loved this episode - there were laughs, there were tears, and, more importantly, I think it will definitely play a role in peaking people's curiosity about the lifestyle and definitely spark an interest in the movement!
HOORAY! :) I love 20 Days as it is, but this episode was just phenomenal!
Posted by: Erin at June 22, 2008 3:10 PMI watched it twice and loved it! I agree that sugar was very important in the way George saw things about Factory Farming and all other things. I kinda upset me about the video he was shown when he first arrived about the chickens going to slaughter and what all they go through and he just said that was a bunch of bs. It was very upsetting when i saw the dead cows on the side of the road. I had my mom watch it with me and i think she is starting to see things differently!
Posted by: Kamie at June 23, 2008 12:00 PMi watched the show, twice!
I thought is was down right beautiful and i could not keep myself from telling everyone around me about it!
i wish that non vegans would watch it because it would be from a different perspective that i can not provide. I wish more people had the opportunity George did.
