Positive Changes in Yourself May 20, 2008

Vegan vegetarian lactose intolerant
At peta2, we obviously like to talk about all the animal suffering you spare by going vegetarian and vegan, but we also love to hear about all the positive changes you see in yourself by making changes to the way you eat.
For example, before I went vegan, I had absolutely no idea that I was lactose intolerant. I would make myself hot chocolate almost every single night during the winter (complete with cow's milk and cream), and every single night I had hot chocolate I would get absolutely horrendous stomach cramps within an hour and would feel nauseous. This didn't only happen when I'd have hot chocolate either—it happened when I'd have cheese pizza, Fettuccini Alfredo, ice cream, etc.
It is beyond me why I thought it was normal to feel like this after eating, but I always thought it was something everyone just dealt with, so I never really thought much of it. Then I went vegan. A few weeks into my veganism, I realized that I never felt disgusting after eating anymore. The stomach cramps and nauseous feelings disappeared completely; I felt ten times better. Now I have all of those same foods but with a non-dairy alternative, like rice milk or soy cheese. Yum!
I always tell people about this, explaining that dairy products made me feel so completely weighed down. One of my best friends had similar problems after eating dairy, and when she went vegan, her symptoms also disappeared and she lost weight to boot.
So let's turn the tables. I want to know all the amazing things you guys have experienced since going vegetarian or vegan. More energy? Hardly ever get sick? Increased confidence? I want to hear about it all.

Since going vegan a full year ago, I haven't been sick. I was a person in the HOSPITAL when I got sick before, sometimes purely because of food poisoning due to eating "contaminated corpse". I thought I could never go that extra step from being vegetarian to vegan. I craved cheese, even though I was lactose intolerant, plus it seemed that everywhere I went cheese was included in the meal options. Now, a year later on a strict vegan diet, not only have I lost fat, I've put on muscle, I'm NEVER sick (compared to being sick 7 times a year!) my anaemia is GONE, my iron count is perfect, my friends are jealous at how clean my complexion is, and I'm supporting cows being with their calves everywhere. Wasn't that a mooooooving story?
Posted by: Jessica at May 20, 2008 5:42 PMi feel sooo much healthier after i went vegitarian [not yet vegan]. i have way more energy, and i feel way more comfortable in my skin. i actually feel as if im pretty for once...and it helps that i know im saving so many animals lives. also i have more defenition to my muscles, i sleep better [i used to not sleep at all], my skin is clear, and my hair has a really nice shiny tint lol. and i can think more clearly...i actually understand what my spanish teacher is talking about!!! its the best decision ive ever made and im so glad that i was made that choice. :]
Posted by: Taylor Ramirez at May 20, 2008 5:59 PMSince I became a vegan I have felt much more energy then I have ever before. Sometimes when I drank milk I would feel such gas and could not release it for a long time.
Posted by: Paige at May 20, 2008 6:42 PMBefore I went vegetarian I was quite a lazy cook and would mostly just eat junk food but now I know a lot more about nutrition and healthy eating, plus I've taught myself to cook more recipes.
Posted by: Little_Lotte at May 20, 2008 6:47 PMIm vegetarian right now, but I'm slowy going vegan, all I need is more food and makeup and stuff. Anyways, I went vegetarian about 4 months ago and I became anemic. The funny thing was my parents kept blaming my vegetarianism, but I was actually anemic because of my time of the month, ha ! Now, I feel so much more engery, and I used to get bad migranes but those are settling too. I think that going vegetarian helped me gte better, and I'm really excited to go vegan ! (Although I really hate soy milk and cheese, I still drink/eat it, hehe)
Posted by: Sam at May 20, 2008 7:22 PMI also never realized that I was lactose intolerant since until I stopped eating/drinking dairy products. I was vegetarian for many many years, until organic and free range foods became more popular about 2 years ago, and I decided to try them. I was sick all the time, taking tons of antacids, feeling drained of energy. I dont know why it took me as long as it did to realize that by adding animal products back into my diet (even though they were "organic" and "free range") was making me sick. No matter how an animal is raised, or if it is cageless or not, slaughter is slaughter, and it is just plain wrong. Illness is nature's way of telling us to avoid something... and meat and dairy makes me sick.
Posted by: Sean at May 20, 2008 7:58 PMAfter I went vegan, I really haven't got sick. This winter the worst thing I had was a stuffy nose. I don't break out as much. I look better because I have lost 20 lbs. And I am happier because now I get to save critters and make my famous vegan brownies for my friends!
Posted by: Caitlin at May 20, 2008 7:59 PMWow, this is really cool. This has really inspired me... I'm going to try being vegan now
Posted by: Brianna at May 20, 2008 8:21 PMbefore i went vegetarian my hair was really dry and my eyes would get watery very easily. now that im vegetarian my hair has gotten healthier (that could also be because i use tresemme instead of cruelty shampoo) and my eyes have been normal. my skin has also been less oily and flaky, and i have less pimples. i've also lost weight and a healthier lifestyle all together. i also have less period cramps. i used to get them for like 3 days during my period. now i only get them the first day and then theyre gone.
Posted by: Lilly at May 20, 2008 8:37 PMEver since i went vegan i havent felt sick after every meal. I acually never get sick!!!! I have also became a much much faster run plus ive gotten way better at softball. Stuff just seems easier to do now!!!
Posted by: Megan at May 20, 2008 10:13 PMwhile i am not yet vegan, i have less acne, eat a ton of fruits and vegetables, and generally feel better after i stopped eating meat
Posted by: claire at May 20, 2008 11:45 PMI went vegan a week ago, After a lot of times trying and quiting because I wasn't used to eat vegetables and fruits, etc. Now that I've been growing my love for these kind of things xD, I've finally did it, and I chose vegan insted of vegetarian because since I heard about it, I think it's so much better. And I'm planning on sticking to it for a VERY long time.
And even though has only been a week, I already feel happier, also I feel better after every meal and I've lost weight. And I've finally started cooking myself. :)
I love being vegan!! :D
I have been vegetarian for a week now and I already feel a difference in my life. First of all my skin has been clear up, and personally thats only half of the good news! The second thing is that I don't have as much chest pain. Every time my mom would cook meat[excluding chicken and fish] I would have a hard time breathing when I was with in 30 feet of it. I would also use to have to throw up after I ate because I felt so sick. This process has been going on for about 3 months now and since I haven't eaten ANY meat in the past week most of the pain has gone away!!
ITS AN EARTH DAY MIRACLE!!!!!!
Turning vegetarian first, i got a little dizzy here & there because i 100% complelety cut it out. I then found soy (boca ! ) & got back on track :] Now that ive been veg two years, i feel so much more healthy & i feel that i can breathe better.

Hey!
Posted by: Annie at May 20, 2008 5:21 PMBefore I went vegan, I used to have horrible period cramps. I used to faint, vomit, and of course had a couple of horrible days each month. Don't think I didn't do my best to keep them from happening, I took pills within other things, but nothing helped.
Then I went vegan and all the symptoms disappeared. I'm not kidding!
I used to get tougher cramps because of the hormones that meat and dairy contain. And then I read that soy helps to get menstruation regulation, which I think also helped to get my pains away.
Now, no one can sense when I'm having my period!!!
I love being vegan =D
