Free Stuff Friday: It's Raining Cats And Dogs April 18, 2008

Posted by Pulin Modi | Permalink | Comments ( 339 ) | TrackBack

You know that whole "April showers bring May flowers" thing? Well, it's April and to help protect you from those rain showers, we've got a unique prize pack for you including an "It's Raining Cats and Dogs" umbrella and your choice of "My Dog Is A Rescue" or "My Cat Is A Rescue" t-shirt! To win, all you have to do is comment below with the name of your favorite dog or cat (yep, you can choose a few animals, there's plenty of love to go around).

Why do we say that it's raining cats and dogs? Well, U.S. animal shelters must put to death nearly 4 million dogs and cats every year because of simple math: too many animals and not enough worthy adoptive homes. (And no, hoarding animals in "no kill" shelters really doesn't address the root of the problem, unfortunately). It's not shelters' fault, they're just cleaning up the unfortunate situation created by puppy mills, breeders, and pet stores which cash in while animals die in shelters.

Can I make this any more clear? For every animal who is bought or sold, one adoptable animal will die. So learn the facts and comment with your favorite dog's or cat's name for a chance to win!

This contest ends April 25, 2008 and the winner will be chosen and notified by April 28, 2008!

Just so you know, by commenting here, we're taking that as acknowledgment that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy. Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

-Pulin

P.S.- Yea that's Assistant Street Team Coordinator Rachel Owen modeling the umbrella.

i have 2 dogs and a cat that was saved! My first dog banana was saved down in Georgia by my family, he was infested with worms and was going to die if we didnt save him. My other dog cupcake was found half dead in a trash can behind a pet store, we found her and saved her! My cat pumpkin was going to be put down if no one took him so we happily took him in. theses animals are a great part of my life and are not just my pet but my friend!

I wish there was a shirt that said my bunny was a rescue, since mine is.

While I do like dogs that I know, after being feciously attacked by a strange dog 2 summers ago, I'm going to have to say I prefer cats.... My mom's cats Rolly and Willy are awesome.

We're also practising our ABC's - she's getting spayed in May.

I have way too many favorite pets. My dog though is a shelter rescue, and he was the last one of his litter to be adopted. Nobody wanted the runt, and now he is HUGE!
We think he is a wolf/alaskan malamute cross.
His name is Dakota.

I love my foal, Lil Bit. She is adorable and about 5 weeks old now. And also my rescue horse, Cherry, who came from a home where as a baby they tied her up, beat her with ropes, whipped her, and kicked her. Now she is a free spirit, and has not been tamed.
My cat, Elvis, whose mother was a stray we took in, and all her litters found good homes. Momma Prissy has been spayed.
My beta fish is a rescue from a really bad pet store, as you may know...Pet Supplies Plus. I have given up pet stores and will neevr go in one again in my life, I will only go to the Walmart nearby that I keep up with fish and help them be cruelty free.

I would LOVE to have both t-shirts if not then one. Rescues are awsome! I already love my peta2.com t-shirt which is what I have on now at school!

Hello there, I'm new to this site but loving it more minute by minute. What an amazing source of vital information.
I have two cats that are rescues. Clovis and Jersey. They were found in a box by the river by someone walking their dog. Their tails were broken and they looked like they have been torutured or burned. They were brought to the local SPCA where I was volenteering. After some much needed TLC I couldn't resist adopting them and bringing them both home. The other six kittens in the box did not make it : ( It breaks my heart. Thank you for letting me comment.

I love all animals but I've always shared my home with lots of cats. I currently have three: Mikey, Mischeif, and Jenga.
Mikey and Mischeif were given to us by friends whose cats had babies.
Jenga we recently rescued from a no-kill shelter. She was left on the side of the road in a box with the rest of her litter. Her mother was torn up and left for dead. I could never be happier with Jenga :)

My rescue animal is my dog Cheyenne. Cheyenne is a black (with a small white patch on her chest)chow chow and sheep dog mix. She looks like a big cuddly fluff ball LOL. I rescued her 3 years ago from a near by rescue shelter. she is not just my pet, but my best friend.

My sweet cat Pepper (aka Spice Cat or PepperMint) made her way to me from a shelter in Winchester, Tenn., around Christmas 2006. My sister-in-law, who volunteers with the shelter, found her for me, and we became fast friends.

Cats are my fav, but I like dogs too. I hope to adopt my first dog sometime later this year ... now that I finally have a yard for one to run in!

I would totally dig a "My cat is a rescue" shirt -- (so would my sister-in-law ... hint, hint!)

My kitten D'Artagnan was rescued from an Animal shelter in Orange, a couple miles from my house.

He is a little orange furball that runs around attacking things like bottlecaps and hairbows.

He had 3 brothers and sisters, but we couldnt take them all :[

We were only allowed one at out house.

So I had 2 of my friends to go to the shelter and take them.

Now they have a nice, loving home.

I saved D'Artagnan, Boots, Jager, and Midnight.

My favourite cats are called Calypso and Pandora. They are sisters that we got from a rescue shelter 8 years ago. Pandora is named after the character from Greek mythology because the first thing she did when we brought her home was sit in a box, and because this is also the name of one of the moons of Saturn, we chose to name Calypso after another :)

All of my animals have been rescues, and they have all been wonderful companions. My favorite is my current dog, Glory. We rescued her almost 10 years ago, after she was abandoned at a shelter. She is my best friend - she follows me everywhere I go, goes for rides with me in the car when I'm feeling sad, sleeps right by my bed every night, and is a great running partner.

I would LOVE to win this shirt! I'm always telling people how wonderful rescuees are, and this would be such a great way to say it to even those I don't know!!

I HAD A DOG NAMED "SUGAR"
I LOVED HER SO MUCH.
I HAD HER FROM WHEN I WAS 2 TILL I WAS 9.
MY MOTHER AND FATHER FOUND HER ON THE STREET WHEN THEY WERE JET SKIING.
THEY HAD SEEN SOMEONE THROUGH A BALL OF WHAT LOOKED TO THEM AS WHITE CLOTH, SO THEY WENT TO CHECK IT OUT.
WHAT IT WAS, WAS A 1 WEEK OLD PUPPY WHO HAD JUST HIT THE RAILING WHEN SHE WAS THROWN OUT OF THE CAR. IT DISLOCATED HER HIP, AND BROKE HER FOOT.
SO MY PARENTS TOOK HER TO THE VET, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT HER HIP, BUT THE FIXED HER FOOT. THAT DOG LIVED A LONG HEALTHY LIFE AFTER THAT UNTILL I WAS 7. WE MOVED OUT TO FENTON, AND SEH GOT FLEAS/TICKS/ AND BREAST CANCER. THEY GAVE HER MEDICINE, BUT IT ONLY WORKED FOR SO LONG, FINALLY SHE LOST ALL HER HAIR, AND COULDN'T WALK RIGHT. SO WE TOOK MY BABY TO THE VET, AND THEY PUT HER DOWN =( I STILL CRY ABOUT IT AT TIMES..
AND MY CAT DOLPHIN (I HAD WITH SUGAR STILL AHVE DOLPHIN) WAS A RESCUE FROM ABUSE AND ATTEMPTED MURDER =]]

ID LOVE TO WIN THE SHIRT TO SUPPORT MY BABYS.

Okay, so my favourite cat has since passed away, but my love for her will never fade. Her name was Tabitha, and she was my first pet that I could ever call my home. We had been driving the road, when I was probably six or seven years old when we spotted a box sheltering a tiny, long-haired calico kitten. I brought her home and loved her so much. I spent all of my allowance on her and played with her every day. One day, she must have got out, and to my sorrow, I found out she had been hit by a car. I thought Tabitha was going to die. Anyway, we took her to the vet because my mom saw how upset I was. After she came home, I was really excited about the vet not putting her down. They gave her wheels for her back legs with had been broken so severely that she would be crippled for life. She was still the cutest thing in the world to me, and I still loved her just as much, if not more, up until the sad day when she passed away of natural causes. Of all of the cats that have ever lived with me since then, Tabitha, the original reason I started to really love and have compassion for animals, will always be in my heart. :]

All of my cats cam from someone who couldn't keep them, besides Jeckale. Jeckale was born from one of my kitties when she escaped form the house before we could spay her. Lucas came from our local shelter, Spooky we rescued when she was dangling from a tree, and Bubbles and Cally we're adopted from a friend who couldn't keep them. Actually all of my animals are rescues. I don't buy from pet stores. Thanks for reading :]

My crazy little kitty Indy was found by my uncle's mom while she was watering her plants. She heard a meow and looked under the plant to find a very scared kitten. Indy was found on the 4th of July, and he was only about 3 months old at the time. At the time we had just rescued another cat which we named Oscar who later ran away. (I miss that cat) Indy is currently 5 years old and will be turning 6 next month. Right now he is sitting on the floor next to me. He is still an energetic little kitty, but because of being abandoned when he was little he is afraid of almost everything. Now he is spoiled and healthy. He is also fixed and declawed. I can't imagine life without him. He is a part of my family and even gets presents on christmas. (mostly catnip toys which he opens by himself) He is now sitting in my lap trying to eat me. He would like to say hi, and he wants me to win the t-shirt so I can wear it with great pride because I rescued him and gave him a chance at a wonderful life.

Finally some attention to the facts that I see everyday. I volunteer at a animal shelter & let me tell you it's heartbreaking.

I'm a cat/dog person. My favorite cat is MeowMeow. He's a stray I picked up from the mall parking lot.

My favorite dog is Chewy Vuiton. She's a full blood black lab & her name suits her well. She chews on everything & has quite the prissy side to her.

My favorite dog's name would be for my Chihuahua, Kitty (as ironic as it is, it's still a name!). She followed me home as I walked home from school one day 2 and a half years ago. Kitty didn't look like a stray, but she followed me all the way to the door of my house; I went inside, waited for at least an hour, and opened the door to see her still there. I gave her some food and water in these small dishes I found in the cupboard and realized I had a new friend. Over 2 days, the Chihuahua remained in our front door and wouldn't leave, but my parents wouldn't let her in either. My parents said I could only keep Kitty if her original owner claimed her within the month, so I set out to put up fliers of the Chihuahua and I kept on the lookout for 'Missing' fliers on poles or in newspapers. The outcome is pretty obvious! I'm so glad I did what I did to have Kitty here with me today.

I currently have no pets, but in the next week, I'm going to the shelter to pick out a puppy. I saw a box of free puppies at a gas station, and my daddy said I could get one, but I decided I'd rather rescue one from the shelter. He said that'd probably be a better idea... We're going tomorrow to look at all the doggies, and we'll be adopting one in the next few days. We're going to three different shelters, actually. And after we adopt, we're getting it FIXED!!! There are already too many puppies in America today, and they can't all have homes... we'll be saving 2-6 lives by spaying/neutering my puppy to come! I can't wait!

All of my animals are rescues (gerbils, rats, fish and a dog). My dog Sadie (pictured on my profile) was spayed as soon as I got her and she's now eight but still loves playing just as much as ever. I actually couldn't ask for a better friend, no one would come running for over 2 hours a day with me except Sadie.

I have been lucky enough to be owned by lots of dogs since childhood, but my current rescue, Monte, is my favoirte. He is my constant companion and has been the best friend a girl could have for over thirteen years. His health is failing now, but he is still happy and alert, and his wags bring joy into my heart. Dogs are miraculous creatures.

My dog Buddy was a hero. He was always by my side to cheer me up when ever I was sad. I knew he could understand me. He passed away in July of '06. But He's still a big part of my life. I love him.

A favorite? I love all my kids the same!!! It's hard to choose when you've got 13 cats, 2 dogs and a bird.
I'm the "cat lady" of the neighborhood who spays and neuters the strays hoping more won't show up but they always do.

My cat Peanut was in a separate cage at the humane society. She was a 16lb, 2 yr old cat someone declawed, then when they moved they didn't want to take her. I have a small condo with a patio on the 2nd floor, she has the run of the place now. I even put a pet door in so she can lounge in the sun outside and nibble on cat grass.

Seeing that I have only one dog, his name would be my favorite : Amadaeous which is an awfully big name for a little Shih-tzu. Love him to pieces. We also have a few cats - we actually adopted them and took them under our wings sorta speak,as they are drop off's to the neighborhood and to some may appear to be somewhat feral - we round them up take them to clinic's for thier health, and always make sure they have food and water available - my favorite name for one of them is Ted - Ted has slowly gained trust in us and has even begun to play.

We have one cat, Lola, whom we resued from the pound. When we got her, she seemed to have a cold. The vet said it was an upper respiratory infection, then a few days later said she had some sort of infection raging though her entire body. Turns out that she had ringworm and mange. She lost a lot of weight, scaring my daughter a great deal. (The only other cat we had breviously owned was also a shelter resue who died about 6 months after we got him, feline infectous peritenitus.) We, after many trips to the vet, medicines and feeding the cat strained baby meat, she got well. We have a beautiful, affectionate long-haired 8-year old, who rules the roost.

Cypress is my baby, I rescued her about 12 years ago, I've since rescued others, but she was my first. She was to be euthanized because she was a runt and sick. (She was sick because they were trying to feed her hard food and she wasn't even old enough to be away from her mother.) When I saw her in the cage, she was using her back claws to try and dig hard food out of her mouth because she couldn't chew it. All of our cats are named after trees, because we love nature! :-) We've also rescued squirrels and released them back into the wild (our backyard).

I rescued my dog Hercules about 10 years ago. In my town we have a greyhound racing track. There are alot of greyhounds abused during training, and once they are too old to race, they are either put down of put up for adoption. The kennels can keep the greyhounds for a certain amount of time, but once that time is up, they will put them down, and not always in a humane way. Hercules was on the verge of being let go, when my family and I rescued him from a greyhound shelter. Greyhounds are big, but extremely gentle, in my opinion the best breed there is.

My family also rescued my cat Rockey. He recently past away this year. He was 19 years old. From the humane society.

I have two dogs and one cat...all saved. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be Bo, he's a chow/lab mix. When we got him, he stunk so bad we named him Hobo..but Bo for short. He's almost 9 now and arthritis is making it hard for him to get around but he's still my favorite footwarmer.

My cat Skippy is the best cat ever. She used to live on the streets, but then we brought her in after her mother died.

She likes to sleep, but then when we go to bed she sometimes knocks a bunch of things down in my room. Haha. But I love her for it. =D

My cats; Polo, Tag and J.Crew are awesome. After I lost my fav cat, Pez, my Father urged me to adopt again stating, " There are so many animals that need homes and you need to open your heart and home". I rescued Polo and Tag, and just recently took in my stray boy J.Crew. Thanks DAD!

My favorite names are those of my three cats. Peanut who was bought at 8 months of age from a pet shop - she had been sick and ended up with an eye disease where no one would have taken her home.
Sox who my stepson got for his grandfather who went into a nursing home a week later, so we adopted her.
Libby (the librarian) who was found outside the local library and who was so small and flea bitten that she probably wouldn't have survived without us taking her home.
All three are spayed and well taken care of.

I love all animals, but I've only had cats as pets. I had a cat, Pookie, for a long time; he was older than me! 3 months ago I rescued a kitten (named Lola) from the citys animal rescue shelter. I really wanted to rescue one, I told my parents that I would never get a kitten from a pet shop or a breeder. I love my Lola! =)

My dog's name is Rowdy. We rescued him from the shelter and it's so hard to believe he was there a month before we came along. He's such a cutie and so much fun to have around. I would wear this T-shirt proudly if I were lucky enough to win it!

I definitely love dogs more, although cats are really sweet too :)

My favorite dog is my baby, of course! His name is Snowball (a Westie), whom I took in from the streets. Apparently, his old owners had moved away a week before we found him wandering around my mom's office at work and had left him behind :( It's no wonder he's always so hungry!
