Contest Committed Dan Mathews
One of my favorite things ever in life is hearing about what it is that got people involved in animal rights in the first place. Besides the fact that it's so inspiring, what is really amazing is that everyone has a different story to tell.
Nobody can argue that Dan Mathews, PETA's Senior Vice President, is committed to animal rights. If you've read his hilarious book, Committed, you know that there's nothing he won't do to help animals! Dying to read about all of his crazy escapades? This mission is for you.
We've come up with an easy opportunity for you to get Committed just by sharing your story with us (and your friends!). Here's the deal:
- Write a blog on your MySpace (or wherever it is you blog) about why you're committed to animal rights. It can be as short or as long as you want it to be.
- E-mail us at StreetTeam@peta2.com with the link to your blog.
- Relax.
The five best entries we receive will each get a copy of Committed (autographed by Dan Mathews himself!), and everyone else will receive 1,000 Street Team points.
Need some inspiration? Check out my story, see what Rachel has to say, then get typing!
Can't wait to get your hands on a copy of Committed? It's now available in paperback, so go ahead and buy a copy today! Seriously, check out this picture of Dan that's on the back of the book—why wouldn't you want to read it?!

Have fun! And don't dilly-dally too much—all entries need to be received by Tuesday, March 4, for a chance to win. Winners will be notified by March 11.

It'd be great if 'Committed' was added to the Street Team goods list at some point in the future. I'm currently reading 'Free the Animals' which I bought with my Street Team points and I'm really enjoying it so far.
Posted by: Little_Lotte at February 13, 2008 8:04 AMI am commited to animal rights because I think that it is very important for us humans to realize that we are NOT the single most important thing on planet earth. Just because we can speak sophisticated languages, use technology, and invent more complex things than other animals, doesnt mean we're any better or any more special than the animals around us. Thinking that we are would be speciesm, or racism, which, in my opinion, SUCKS. Without the other animals there would be no enviroment, no food chains, no chance of survival for anyone or anything. We need to stand up and speak out for those who cannot do so for themselves: The animals our fellow people abuse and slaughter every minute of every day. Animals can feel love, fear, pain and joy just like us. They display qualities once thought to be uniquely human, such as: tool-making, self-awareness, fairness, humor, deception, culture, language, improvisation, planning, abstract thought, as well as mental states like guilt, loyalty and depression, and, believe it or not, 450 species of animals have been documented as having homosexual pairs amongst them, which is a random fact that shows just how consious they are. Mother cows have jumped fences and walked for miles to be reunited with their calves that were taken to neighboring farms, now if that's not love what is it? Geese stay with one partner for a lifetime, until death. This is, in fact, better than what 40% of human married couples bring up, to be honest. So. How different are they, really? When i first heard of peta several questions entered my mind, and that was why i decided to commit myself to animal rights. For example, who the hell are we to decide which animals live and which die? Why kill animals for fur when you can wear fake fur or other types of fabric? Why call some animals friends and others food? And if we are truly supposed to live off meat (according to some people), how come we can survive without it just fine?
I think the main reason im commited to animal rights is that so many people think that because we have the power to control the animals and kill or abuse them, we also have the right to do all that, which is bullshit. This mentality needs to be changed, and thats what peta does very well, i must say.
I love animals and love fighting for their rights.
I once a leather jacket at one time, not knowing what happened to the animals to make that coat. All I cared was that I looked good in the coat. Last year, I was sitting in my DECA class and one of my classmates did a presentation on animal rights and I couldn't even believe what happens to those animals. I still haven't thrown away that jacket, but instead I like to keep it on my coat rack. That way, I can have motivation to stay a vegetarian. It's better to do that than throw it away andlet someone else wear it. No one should ever wear it again.

when I first learned abot PETA,I was browsing through animal rights 'myspace' pages.I clicked on a link it led me to PETA!when I started looking through the things on the menu,i noticed KFC cruelty! This drew my attention, because I dednt like kfc because of the grease in the first place.so,afer I read a paragraph I knew I had to support the cause.so,in that hour I had discorvered my new dream to help animals, ordered some stickers and leaflets and taught my whole family about what KFC was doing!I am proud of it,and am vegetarian.I soon hope to be a vegan because thats just how cool i am =Panimals dont desrve to be treated the way millions are.
I've always been an animal lover. When I was in high school, one of my friends posted a video on their myspace of a fur farm. I started crying while watching it, and from that point on, I was determined to spread the word about fur whenever possible. I even wrote a persuasive essay about it my senior year(last year). I'm taking a public speaking class this semester, and I'm giving an informative speech on fur. I'm really excited about it, because this is a really good chance to get my point across. After watching the "meet your meat" video, I became vegetarian. Although it's only been a couple of weeks and I loved meat before then, just the thought of how it got there makes me sick. Also, my brother rescued a puppy from the pound and we're pretty sure he was abused; so that makes me want to go to the pound to get a pet instead of getting a full breed.
Posted by: Mattie at February 14, 2008 2:27 PMWhy am I so committed to animal rights? There's SO many ways I could answer this question. But, to put it simply, I like to sum it up in this quote which was said my George Bernard Shaw, a famous Irish playwright: "Animals are my friends, and I don't eat my friends." Ever sinse I was a little kid I have always been compassionate towards animals, but it took me a while to realize how much harm I would be inflicting upon them by continuing to eat meat. In 5th grade, I decided to go vegetarian. It was on and off. Then at 14, I got serious and decided to never eat meat again. Now almost 16, I'm completley vegan and love every single thing about it. It os completley beyond me why animals are treated the way they are. Confined to cages their entire lives, taking steps outside for the first time only to be transported into a truck on the way to slaughter, being manipulated by workers, and so much more. Animals are living, breathing creatures that mourn and feel pain. If someone was to slaughter a dog or a cat, they would probably be arrested. But whats the difference between a dog and cow? Or a pig? Hmm...size is pretty much the only thing I can think of. Animals weren't put on this earth to be controlled and eaten by humans. Who, by the way, are only deteriorating their own health by consuming animal products. And that's not the only down side. Consuming animal products is bad for the environment, too. The huge amounts of grain used to feed cattle, for example, could easily provide nourishment for the starving. By going vegan, you could lower your risk for disease, help the environment, and most importantly save human lives AS WELL as animal lives. How does that sound?! Just by not eating animal products, we could all become super heroes...WE CAN SAVE THE WORLD! =]
Posted by: jill!!! at February 14, 2008 3:04 PMwhy am i committed to animal rights? Because animals have most of the same things that humans have... brains, hearts, and FEELINGS! pigs are smarter than babies.. you wouldnt kill a baby so why kill a pig? Everyone has a chance to live so shouldnt an amimal? People torture is bad and so is animal!
Posted by: marcy at February 14, 2008 3:47 PMWhy am I committed to animal rights?
Well, it all started when I was on you tube and there was a documentary about factory farms. I watched it (and cried) and was disgusted. All I could ask myself was “How can people torture animals like this? At the time I was a meat eater and never thought of what went in to a hamburger. After watching that I was disgusted by red meat, but I still ate chicken. Than I went on PETAs website and thought to myself “well, if I won’t eat a cow, pig, etc what makes a chicken any different? That was the big turning point, so now I am a veggie and have been for 1 year now!
I always knew about animal abuse but nothing more. I am so glad I know all about how animals are treated because I now wear no fur, leather, buy animal tested products, etc, etc.
So, I am very grateful for PETA because now I can let others know the truth behind every burger, leather shoe, fur jacket, etc.
Thanks so much PETA for all you do for animals!
Im commited because after i learned what they do just to get me fat off of candy, and just to make me look "good" with all the make up, i totally went against animal testing. Also, when i found out what the animals go through, just to be slaughtered and eaten later, i stopped eating meat, and hope that more and more people will, so less animals will have to die for their pleasure.
Posted by: Liz at February 14, 2008 5:16 PMI was always against fur, as long as I could remember. As a young child, I would go shopping with my mother and whisper, "Mommy! That lady's wearing an animal! She's ICKY!" (I'd always change the station when a commercial for a fur shop would come on, too.) However, I still liked meat, for some reason.
The thing that made me go vegetarian was a simple "I am not a Nugget" sticker a friend gave to me last year. I saw the tiny chick on the sticker, and it reminded me of the chicks my class had hatched in third grade...I shuddered to think of what had become of them. After all, they were so cute--to cute to be eaten. So, that's how I've become vegetarian. Why have I stayed committed? Well, I personally don't think it would be fun to be chained up or crammed together with a bunch of other people and subsequently sliced up to become lunch. Not only that, but it's just a wretched thought to know youre eating something that could once breathe like you and I. Even if one animal is killed, it's still one too many. How would you feel if Fido or Fluffy was hacked up, grilled, and served to you on a bun? I thought so.
I became vegan about two months ago. I was eating pizza as I read the "What They Never Told You" booklet from the PETA vegetarian starter kit. I came to the part about what ends up in dairy products... Needless to say, I lost my appetite soon after.
As for animal rights in general, I'm slowly becoming more passionate about them as well as more involved with them. Next year, I'm taking AP Biology mainly because I want to change our school's dissection policy and possibly even stop dissections entirely. I'm also trying to recruit my friends to become vegans, and I'm even thinking about starting an animal rights club at my school. There's a KFC two blocks from my house, too...can you say leafleting and protests galore?
As a little little girl. I loved animals. still do of course. I always asked why do we eat meat mom? i never liked it. i thought it was wrong. So im a natural. thanks to PETA WE CAN SAVE THE WORLD ONE BY ONE ! :]

I became a vegetarian a year ago. I was eating a piece of chicken, and it hit me , with such force- I was eating flesh. The flesh of a living sentient being. I couldn't finish that piece of chicken.
I decided that since I was now a vegetarian, I had better learn about substitute protein. Well, I came across the PETA website. There was a video of animals being slaughtered. I watched about 3 seconds of it- I couldn't watch any more.Of course, there were other videos of animals being tortured; I sat in shock, crying, not wanting to believe what I was seeing. There aren't any words that will adequately describe the horror I felt. I can't believe that for so many years, I lived blissfuly ignorant of the suffering that animals endure: for food, fur, leather, wool, and most disturbing, judging from the laughter and cheering I heard on one of the videos, sport and pleasure. I have since joined all sorts of animal rights groups, and give as often as I can financially.
I still can't watch the videos- it affects me to the point of not sleeping, but I so admire those who are out on the front lines documenting these atrocities. Thank you for bravely bringing these images to the attention of the public.
I sometimes feel a bit hopeless about humans and their cruelty - but sites like PETA give that hope back. There is no turning back; I am committed, and I hope in my lifetime I do see cruel practices abolished, and more people turning to vegetarianism to save the animals and the planet.
Well I first got interested in animal rights when a girl at my school did a presentation/report on animal testing. I didn't really know about it then and I never was paying attention to those kind of things. But when I was screwing around on the computer, I decided to look up animal testing information. What came up were these link to youtube showing animals that were completley disgusting. I remember watching the movies the first time and then balling my eyes out. It was the worst. Now I am proud to say......I NEVER BUY ANYTHING THAT IS TESTED ON ANIMALS.....ANYMORE. I also incourage my friends to do the same. I love animals and I will do anything to protect them....including my lovely circus of animals I have living in my home.
Posted by: Emma at February 14, 2008 9:22 PMi love being a vegitarian, and with all the great alternatives there are today i dont really understand why more people still eat meat or why animals who are used for consumption are still treated so horrible.
for me being committed is more then just a different choice of foods, its a part of my life. to me being a vegi is about improving the quality of life for everyone and improving things on our planet for the better. to me going vegi and its other values are as important and relivant today as MLK jr and the civil rights movements were in the 60's
Why am I committed?
around 15 months ago, a friend got into an arguement with me about how animals are treated. I remember stumbling on to a KFC video about how chickens are plucked before killed.. It set me off when he said 'god put them here to be eaten'. I'm not religious, and if there is a god, I know he wouldn't want what KFC does to them. That night i committed to being a vegetarian. 11 months later, I stepped it up and became a vegan, realizing that eating the chickens eggs was a similar concept to eating a chicken. I didn't feel it was right to take the chicken's eggs from them. Another friend argued to me recently about how abortion is killing something against their will. I explained how killing animals was the exact same concept, and they agreed. They won't commit, but that's their mistake. Now i am strongly against wearing any form of fur or leather, and I leave the classroom when people get into animal abuse discussions. (after reminding them that they are assholes)
Well, I am 12. I was reading the PETA pamphlet about what happens in the slaughter houses. I was horiffied. It was not until I watched Year of the Dog, that I decided. I have eaten meat a fews times, but I have been basically vegetarian for 6 months. I have told people about what happens. I wrote my persuasive essay about why the world should go veeg. I get on my dad about what happens in Kfc when ever he wants to gt there, even though it does annoy the heck outta him. No one else in my family, well close family, is vegetarian. My mom is supportive about it. My papa(dad) was a chef, so he can cook up something veg. It is rare, though. SOme people do like to call me a hippie however, but I dont care. I'd rather be a hippy then eating a dead animal. PEople dont realise wow cute chickens and cows and pigs, especially pigs, are because they never think about it. ♥ THanks, Maria
Posted by: Maria at February 15, 2008 12:32 AMIv been vegetarian for nearly 2 years now, and it was right from that point that i became interested in animal rights.
What turned me vegetarian was the agriculture department at my school. Basically, we have a farm with cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits and alpacas. The farms main role is marketing animals, but it also teaches students about the agriculture business incase they want to take on that line of work.
In year 9 I did the Nursury Enterprises course, which was raising baby animals. So they gave me a little Holstein Fresien calf to look after. Her name was Belinda, and i would go to the farm every school day to feed her, wash her, teach her to walk on a lead and watch her grow. So obviously we would fall in love with the cows we had, she was so cute!
So this went on for a few months, and I was talking to the farm about letting me buy Belinda to live on my aunties property. The farm manager said definately yes, and he would get the prices for me after the 2 week holidays that were coming up. I was rushing on the last day so i kind of didnt say bye to Belinda before i left.
When I came back after the holidays, i went to the farm first thing. and found she wasnt there. When I asked the farm manager, he said "oh yeah, I sold it to an abattoir". I was a little pissed off (more than a little actually), and that night mum was making steak for dinner, I looked at it and said I wont eat it.
So thats my story :] that night I was searching on the net about what happened in abattoirs cos i didnt know. Then I came across PETA, and thats where I learnt about loads of things such as fur (which I didnt even know people wore!)and circues and things like that. So thats how i became involved in it, because i thought it was completely disgusting and disturbing what people did to animals. I mean how the hell could you wear the decomposing body of an animal on your body, shouldnt you be thinking "oh this is a dead animal whose been murdered just so i can wear its corpse, maybe I shouldnt do it because I wouldnt like it if someone wore my skin around." Thats what i think anyway.
But after the farm incident, I talked with a few of my friends and we wernt very happy with some of the things the farm was doing, such as battery hens and pigs kept in the same gestation crates at all times, never walking. Thats all ended now though, because a lot of people started to realise it was more than a little cruel, and the RSPCA became involved :]
Posted by: Scotty at February 15, 2008 6:41 AM I first became involved in animal rights, my sophmore year in Algebra 2. My friend at the time, Alisha passed out phamplets about slaughter factories to the class. I read them and got hooked. I spent all my free time, learning about every possible form of animal abuse and ways to stop it. I've now been a vegetarian for 2 years and never dream of going back. My parents think I'm crazy but I know that I'm doing what's right for me and the animals. I've never had pig in my entire life, not because of religious beliefs, just because I've always thought they were cute.
I volunteer at my county's Humane Society on Wednesdays and Fridays. I mostly spend my time there with the dogs that have been abused and neglected. I love them like my own and we all get along great. I even adopted a chow mix, named Gunner who's now my best friend. He's 3 yrs. old and is a rescue...his previous owners repeatidly called him ugly and shot him 7 times, trying to kill him, luckily he survived. Now he's loving his new home. People at the shelter said he has a temper, however, the first day I went to see him, he came up right to me and licked me...it was love at first sight. I'm also planning on adopting a beagle mix there, named Corbin, who suffered from neglect and caught on fire...he's such a sweety.
I've also devoted my time towards my English papers every year. I right about a different form of animal rights and always get A's on them because I really go into detail and personal views.
I love what I am (a vegetarian and animal rights activist) and will never change for anyone. I'm doing this because they are my beliefs.
I was fourteen years old when I first became a vegetarian and I haven’t gone back since! I was down the shore with my family when my mom and aunt decided to cook crabs for dinner. Once we sat down to eat and the first crab was put on my plate, it hit me. I was eating an animal. I thought it was so weird to be looking at what you’re eating knowing that it was once living and breathing. However, I thought that when I cracked it open I’d want to eat it. Oh no! I was done. After seeing the flesh falling out of its shell I knew I was done with meat forever. That was over 4 years ago & tomorrow I will be celebrating my two year vegan birthday. I feel so proud to know that I have not put any animal into my body for so long. Go us!
Posted by: Chelsea! at February 15, 2008 1:12 PMI am commited to animal rights because I love animals. I could not live happily knowing I was eating animals so a friend and i both decided we would become vegetarians together. Going Veg was the best choice I ever made. I feel better both emotionaly and physically without having meat in my life. I am going on two years now I I plan on stying with it for the rest of my life.
Thank you PETA and everyone else for all the support and help. I could not have done it without you.
It started a few monthes ago. I was thinking about going vegetarian simply because I didn't eat a lot of meat anyway, so I figured, why not just go all the way. A few days after that I was looking at some avatars, on a MySpace graphics website, and I found one that had a picture of a bunch of abused animals on it, and underneath there were a bunch of comments on the picture. One of the comments was talking about how horrible animal abuse is and put a link to Peta2.com. I put the avatar on my MySpace (It's still there) and went to Peta2.com.
Once I got here I watched a bunch of videos about fur, Meet Your Meat, and animal testing. I've always loved animals, so I was shocked and appalled at what I saw. It's disgusting what these people are doing for "fashion", and tests that aren't even necessary. I took a whole bunch of pledges and I haven't eaten meat since. I've been E-Mailing and Mailing letters to big corporations trying to get them to stop selling fur, and to stop animal testing. I'm currently in the process of trying to get others to become vegetarian, and showing videos and pamphlets to all my meat eater friends.
Posted by: Caitlan at February 15, 2008 7:32 PMim committed because i believe in treating others as you wish to be treated and i know i wouldnt want anyone doing stupid tests on me then cutting me open just to see what happens.

I just put the finishing touches on mine on myspace. I am concerned about my health, the environment, and of course, the animals!
Posted by: paris04 at February 15, 2008 10:32 PMI'm 13 years old. I have always loved animals and I had to do a persuasive speech for school and I decided to do it on animal rights. I did some research about it and the things that I saw were happening were so awful I decided to become a vegetarian. I was looking at my friend's myspace, he's a vegan, and there was a link to Peta2.com and I clicked it and it lead me to this wonderful website! I'm getting more and more informed on animal rights and how we can change the world. I love animals and I just don't have the heart to eat them, or wear them. I am very committed to changing the world to help animals every wear.

I think I became a vegetarian because I wanted to be different, and I cared about the animals. I also wanted to be healthier. I haven't eaten any meat in about 10 months and I feel so much better now that I don't. I want to be a vegan but my family absolutely doesn't support that. They only buy real dairy products not soy and replacements. They don't realize how much better being a vegan is. They said that if I want those foods, I have to buy them which is hard considering I can't get a job or drive to a store. They don't understand how much I care about this. I don't even metion it anymore because I'll just get yelled at and called crazy. I need advice. Can someone please help me?!?!?!

I am committed to animal rights because of the cruel and inhumane acts that are thrushed upon them, with no punishable response to the freaks who commit theses disgusting crimes. I have not eaten meat for a long time now because of my beliefs about animal rights. Animals, in my opinion, are just like us. Isn't it so that humanes have been proven to be animals? Yet if we kill oneanother or torture them we are sent to jail and lose everything? I don't believe it has anything to do with "aww i dont eat meat because chickens are cute" thats crap. Animals shouldnt be eaten, not because their cute, but because all living and breating things should have rights. I feel very strongly about this topic because if I dont stand for it...who will? I have participated in about 12 protests and I have given a numerous amount of speeches to classmates, co-workers, family members ect. I believe that the word of this should be spread, not hidden from the world. As a child, I always was interested in animals and I used to pretend I could talk to them. My parents knew, even before I did, that sooner or later I would become vegetarian. My passion for animals and my love for the animals on a neighboring farm are my supreme motivation for being meat free and helping others to understand. Unlike animals, we were born with rights and the power of choice. By using my power of choice, I can choose what I know the animals would want. Im using my voice and rights for the animals. Slowly, I'm trying to contribute to saving the world through my rights.
Posted by: Jenna at February 17, 2008 10:43 AMI first got interested in peta2 when my dad put stickers on our fridge that read "Fish are friends.not food." Then I REALLY got interested when my older sister received a package in the mail explaining KFC's special recipe. I realized then what animals go through to satisfy our hunger. I've never tried to be a vegetarian, but I'd like to start. Me and my sister are now hoping to become successful vegetarians. It's just that you could be perfectly healthy is you don't eat meat.

Posted by: Chelsea! at February 17, 2008 7:41 PMthe first and honest reason why i am comitted to animals would have to be because i love animals soo much and cant stand people treating them like if there worthless. thats just a disgrace and an abomination seriously i will never ever get tired of standing up for them and fighting for their rights. they deserve to live like each one of us do also. and i dont care what other people think about it but im sticking with them forver.
Posted by: dayana at February 18, 2008 12:16 PMwhy im commited to animal rights.
im commited to them because they dont have voices to speak for themselves.
they feel everything we can feel.
they DESERVE to have rights.
their the same as us, if not, better.
they are so innocent, unlike most humans.
they can sit there and make you happy just because their there.
im commited to them because if im not who will be?
im commited because its not fair.
it's not fair that they have to suffer at the hands of such inconciderate beings.
the only thing they've ever done was be born.
im commited because i know they understand what going on.
they know that once there in those cages they have another day of torture and pain to go through.
im commmited cause they are so much better than we are.
Well, like around a year ago I was Very Vegan. For about 6 months I stayed the course and I don't think I ever had a slip up. Back then, I solely did it for two reasons:
1.My father was becoming vegan and I was kinda young
:p
And
2. Its healthy.
I feel that being healthy is a very good reason for people to become vegan if they don't care about animals. I do.
Since then I had eaten meat but never ate dairy. It tasted nasty. Thats all there was to it. Well,
a week or two ago I had my two best friends over and we were doing whatever surfin' the web and crap. When one of my friends [Ariana] showed me and my other friend [ali] PETA2. We watched a number of videos including All of the KFC ones and
the Mars company video about testing on animals. We couldn't hardly stand it. While Ariana had known all of these things, me and Ali hadn't and we both couldn't take it. From that point we havn't eaten any meat at all. Since I have gone through it before I am getting used to it easily
while Ali is having a tough time. Me and Ali keep
bugging Ariana to go Vegan but she won't and we don't know why.
I believe that there are an uncountable amount of reasons to go Vegan so I'll name a couple:
~Dairy products are not good for you
~Animals are beaten/burned/ect. to death for the pleasure of another animal [humans are just as much of an animal as a dog or cat]
~Good for your health to not eat meat
A couple reasons I think are bad:
~Because you want to lose weight
-Okay Iv' heard this a lot, not eating meat does help you lose weight, but it shouldn't be your only reason.
~Because their cute
-I hate this!!! HATE. You could imply this reason of not eating meat [because their cute] to the way
of picking out where your going to get your pet dog/cat from [but the one from the pet store is cuter then the ones at the pound!]
I hope that you have enjoyed what I've had to say :] Happy Veggieing

She has really propelled me to stick to animal rights even though many of my friends (Christians) are constantly telling me to start caring about people more. I always try to get the word of a animal rights out there for instance when I found out that my scummy science teacher was a former ANIMAL TESTER I stopped talking to him and would stick stuff about animal cruelty on the walls of his class. I called him scum (once to his face) and wrote stuff on my books about how much I didn't like him. Practically bullied him! It was fun. I'm also vegetarian (Trying to go vegan) so whenever people ask why, I have the chance to tell them all about the cruelty in factory farms.
Accidentally finding Testing 123 is one of the best things that's happened to me. Having my dog Katie is the best!
I'm committed to animal rights because animals are our friends, not our food, entertainment or whatever else those sicko people use animals for. I feel that as animals don't speak the same language as us, someone has to make their voices (clucks and moos too!) heard. And that someone is me. And i'm sooo super dedicated to animal rights, I drive my self crazy fighting for animal rights(guess i might need to check out that asylum...lol)
Posted by: NiNi F baybay at February 19, 2008 7:44 PMHonestly, why wouldn't I? I love animals, and it makes me sick to the stomach when I think of the suffering some of them go through. When I read stories/watch videos on here, I put myself or one of my four pets in the place of the animal that is being focused on. Humans are so self-centered,
and it makes me mad when we put ourselves before
animals. That's one of the reasons I went veg,
and I also had become educated on how much healthier it is. People need to get over themselves, and see there is a bigger picture,
and try to make the world a better place.
Why I am becoming a vegeterian? Two of my friends have gone vegeterian, and recently they gave me the pamphlet what they never told you and the KFC "special recipe". After I read I was shocked that this was actually happening out in the world!!!! I'M glad that I am on the path to becoming a vegeterian. I know that it will be hard, but I think, No Scratch that I know I can be a successful VEGETERIAN!!
Posted by: Jenny at February 19, 2008 11:32 PMWhy am I now commited to Animal rights?
Well lets start off by saying if i were ever killed for my coat i would be pretty pissed off. I dont think it is nessesary to wear fur because we have so many other resources on earth for clothes; cotton, spandex, wool [ it is only shaved off the animal ], polyiester, silk, anything else but not fur. For people to stoop down so low to poor animals that cant even deffend themselves is just idiotic and heartless.
Posted by: Molly at February 20, 2008 10:35 AMI respect all life. We all share the same world, so it's the animal's too. We just can't go around picking on animals, taking them from their habitat, and killing them for food or other things. They have their own space & family so we shouldn't trespass it. We should treat animals with as much respect because without them, this world wouldn't be complete. Animals are the most innocent beings of all, they just don't know what they're gonna go through.. A bloody massacre! Yes, as bad as it sounds, it's the truth. As the quote says, "There's no worst blind, than the one who does not want to see," this means even if we're not blind, we don't accept reality and open our eyes to see what's REALLY going on in this very messed up world. Hopefully, i'm gonna change this world one day, and everyone that is part of PETA is gonna make a difference too.. well we already are :). So that's why i commited myself.
Posted by: Mariana at February 20, 2008 11:09 AMheres the deal... im sure i could list a bunch of ways to make you all think im some great animal rights activist, but when it comes down to it... i've got morals, and supporting murder just doesnt fall under that category for me.
Posted by: XcodyX at February 20, 2008 12:42 PMWhy am I committed to animal rights?
I love animals so much, and just the thought of eating them makes me sick. I was a meat eater before, and I didn't realize all the mean things those people in the slaughter houses do to those poor, innocent animals. I am loved animals my whole life, and I remember when I was like 6, I wanted to go vegetarian, tried, but couldn't do it because I didn't know how. PETA has helped me, and I have now been vegetarian for 6 1/2 months. I am a lot more healthy than I ever was. I have watched pretty much every PETA movie clip thing, and they just made me mad, and sad.
Animals shouldn't be killed, just so us humans can enjoy them. It's gross and cruel. I don't own any leather, or fur, or products that are tested on animals. I have 100% cruelty free and proud of it!
I'm commited to animal right because it's wrong the way humans treat animals. Animals are not ours to test on, eat, or hurt. Animals were not put here or born to live miserably and then die for whatever stupid reason because of us. That's why I try to tell people why I'm vegan, hand out leaflets, don't eat meat or dairy, and posts these blogs. I try to let veganisma dn animal rights make an impcat where ever I go. I'm especialy against animal cruelty because there are kinder, cruelty-free ways to do things. There's different alternative ways to animal testing, fur, and meat. So there is no good excuse to wear fur, test on animals, or eat meat. http://www.peta2.com/

I know that animals deserve better, and i intend to help make that happen.

Posted by: sarah at February 20, 2008 11:33 PMim not as commited as all the people who have already commented, but i refuse to eat lots of types of meat, kfc and mars bars products.
the only meat i do eat is chicken, beef, fish and ham, and then i dont eat it much. i absolutely will NEVER eat any other meat, wear fur, or hurt an animal. when im an adult, i might go completely vegetarian.
like i said, im not as commited as the other people, but every little counts.
I first became vegetarian about january 20th or so of this year!! I was dating a person by the name of ben and he was a vegetarian! Anyways.. i was hanging out with him alot and it got me thinking alot about becoming a vegetarian! at first i was a bit skeptical about becoming a vegetarian but i faced it and said forget what anybody else says im doing it im becoming a vegetarian! well later that day after sorta becoming a vegetarian i was on myspace and there was a bulletien from one of my friends posted that said "watch this! Its sad what happens to animals" I watched the video and i broke down crying becuase i was thinking about all the meat that i have ate up til this point!! I was scared and i knew right then and there that i had to make a change! i have been a vegetarian every scince then and im so happy and proud of my self!! now ever time i look at meat that someone elses eating i think about everyanimal that dies each year and it keeps my motivated! i love peta2.com i get on here about every night! i have even told all of my friends about peta2.com and they have checked it out! i now am starting a club at my school with a fellow teacher and its amazing!! thanxs peta2!

Posted by: Kailey at February 21, 2008 9:29 PMWhy Am I Committed To Animal Rights?
Animals have been friends/companions to a lot of people in the past. Whether it be a chicken in your Agriculture class, or your cat at home. Animals are amazing creatures that deserve respect and lots of love too. People that are cruel to animals are just horrible, and that is the main reason for me trying to stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves. The other two reasons are: animals shouldn't be worn as clothing, and animals shouldn't be tested upon. So, I hope you will read the rest of this blog, for it is most likely the most important thing you will ever read.
First, animal cruelty is sweeping the nation, and some big names are committing it. KFC is one of the names. They are keeping their chickens in such small cages before they are shipped off to die. Is it wrong? Only a lot! I have worked with chickens in my 7th grade agriculture class. They are the sweetest little animals, and they don't deserve that kind of treatment. I'll tell you one thing, if you can HONESTLY say that you can buy KFC chicken after you read this… you're not much better than they are.
Second, have you met some of the animals that created your coat? I'm guessing… definitely not. Have you ever heard of Donna Karan, the big time clothing designer? Well, she has been found, YET AGAIN, being very cruel to the animals she puts on her clothing. She is now known as the "Bunny Butcher". I have a rabbit of my own, and it sickens me that she could ACTUALLY look at those bunnies and say, "I wanna make a coat out of that!"
Third, do you buy Iams cat and/or dog food? Well, you probably didn't know this little tidbit of information. Iams tests their food on cats and dogs. Cats and dogs kept in tiny cages for most of their tortured life. I don't know about you, but that seems pretty immoral to me. Animals don't need to be tested to suit our needs and clothe us.
In conclusion, I hope you can know see what all of these adorable animals go through ever day of their now short lives. It's not fair what some people think is "Just Business". Animals have feelings that a lot of people ignore. But, some people DO care. And that's what peta2.com is all about. Remember, fish are friends not food, chickens are not nuggets, and cut class, not frogs!
Posted by: Allison at February 21, 2008 9:50 PMWhy am I committed? More like why wouldn't I be committed? I'm committed for the simple fact that animals are marvelous creatures! Beautiful and intelligent! You're probably thinking; they're not intelligent! But thats where you're wrong, see animals are smart, in their own way! They have ways of communicating and surviving. Not only that but animals have rights too! They should be treated as equally as humans, we're not superior. It's not because they can't open their mouths and say what they want to say that we should treat them like dirt. I started out vegetarian when I was a little kid, but since I was so little I had no idea what contained meat so my parents would hide meat where I wouldn't notice it. I found it too hard and I quit after a week. Now, I've grown up. I'm stronger, smarter and determined. One day I was on Myspace, I saw Matthew Lush's profile and thought he was REALLY hot. As I was reading his 'about me' column, which talks about veganism and stuff like that, I decided, hey why not? Let's give it another try! I realized he supported Peta2 alot and i was curious to see what it was. So I checked it out! Looking at all those video's of tortured and tested on animals, I lost it! NO MORE MEAT FOR ME! I was vegetarian for almost a month and since I found it so easy being vegetarian, I took it to the next step and went vegan!=D Now, showing video's and talking about all those tortured animals, I convinced 3 of my close friends to become vegetarian. I'm always talking about how they cut those baby pig's tails and mutate them and feed them so much their legs break that people don't eat much meat around me, which is a good thing!:] I also convinced my mom to start buying non-animal-tested products for around the house. She also started buying soy milk and tofu. I'm so proud of myself for making this choice and actually sticking to it. Every time I look at meat I see this dead animal. It really grosses me out, just to imagine how tortured that animal was before having their throats slit when still alive, it's repulsing! But the thing that motivates me the most is when people tell me how crazy I am for being vegan, what I'm missing out on, ask me how I can resist it and calling me a Tree-hugger (which isn't even the same subject) or a Prep! It just gives me another reason to be a vegan! To prove them wrong! Hey, if I can do it, you can do it too buddy!:D Can you imagine being tortured feeling what they're feeling, what they have to go through? They torture animals for the sake of it! What they put in meat isn't even sanitary! Think about it, they put all sorts of toxics and when the cow/chicken/pig/whatever have cancer, or whatever disease, it's still legal to sell them, you never know, you might be eating a KFC chicken popcorn that had cancer. EW, EW, EW! Pepperettes, Hamburg and other kinds of meat are made of what they don't use of the dead cows and chicken, those parts of the bodies that weren't put in your steak or whatever. Eating meat also causes people to become obese. Think about it, they impregnate cows year long for their milk and they can't even see their babies. To wrap it all up, I think people who simply don't give a shit are selfish, dumb and probably FAT! Thank you http://www.peta2.com/ for helping me help those who can't help themselves!
Posted by: Natalie.<3 at February 21, 2008 11:41 PMwhy am I committed to animal rights? all I can really think of to answer that is that I love animals, I always have. seriously, once when I was little my cat caught a mouse and I screamed and cried until my mom saved it. I think animals should be treated like people, I've never understood how or why some people think humans are better because of all the things we can do and animals are like scum because they can't. that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, it doesn't make any sense. animals are pretty much the same as humans, if not better, and they deserve to be treated as such. yeah, that's my rant for the day, I'm actually supposed to be doing school work right now but I figured this was more important
Peace:)
I am commited to being a vegatarien because
A: I LOVE ANIMALS
B: Animals are important to many people
C: I plan on a being a vegatarien for the rest of my life so I can get a job as a Vet
D: I feel sorry for the poor animals
E: I want eveyone who treats animals bad to die of some kind of disease
F: ANIMAL CRULETY IS WRONG!!
G: I am the only vegatarien in my family and I like it that way
H: ANIMALS HAVE RIGHTS TOO!!
I: I will never wear fur
J: I will NEVER EVER eat meat again
Thats all I can think of right now but I will try and think of some more. That only 10 of the 26 letters in the alphabet so I am not even halfway done yet. But I will think of more I PROMISE!
You know why I'm comitted?
Animals are treated like CRAP these days. Just because dogs are furrier, smaller, are four-legged does NOT mean they are our slaves, lunch, test subjects, fur coats, or ANYTHING. We are animals... who can't see that? I love my hamster and would DIE if I saw him being injected by some nausous CRAP that would later go into some little girl's lipstick. No animal deserves this! I don't care what anyone says or does, comittment to animals is my life and I will do all I can to ensure a peaceful and happy life for all animals. Thank you PETA.

Posted by: Gabrielle at February 22, 2008 11:28 PMWhy am i committed?!
I'm committed to animals rights, because im committed to my own. animals are just like humans. like everyone says, "you wouldn't eat your friends, would you?!" and think of thanksgiving day, the turkey, image if they would have eaten a cat instead, nobody would have went through with it. but it shouldn't be different for any other animals than cats and dogs.. im committed to animals rights because i believe that every life, now matter how small or large; they still deserve a chance to live, spread their legs or wings..they don't deserve to go through what they do, they deserve to be loved, that's all :D
Why am I committed to animals right?
This most top thing is that i care for animals and have a deep passion for them. Ever since I was a little kid I was so interested in animals. I never knew what went on behind the senes until i got older, and It disgusted me. I couldn't understand why someone would hurt animals just so that our tummies could be happy. I knew it was wrong, so i became a vegan, so that i could at least help prevent animal cruelty with my own hands. Do you remember the golden rule? "Treat others the way that you would want to be treated." I think that animals should be treated with respect and just as if they were our best friends. Because I know that I would NEVER want to be treated in the cruel and inhumane way that they are. Animals feel pain too.
I am so commited to animal rights because before this I was a really bad meat eater, but then my vegetarian friend showed me through a different light. Also I found out that we had to dissect frogs in science, so I passed out the "Cut class, not frogs" stickers and almost every student at my school wanted one. I almost felt popular. Almost. But that is also why I'm so commited to becoming a vegetarian. Thanks for your help PETA!
Posted by: Kelly at February 23, 2008 10:08 AMWell, lets see. im commited because of my best friend that i have had for 10 years. Right now she lays on her death bed as we speak. Her name is Baboki and yes she is my cat. When Baboki started to get sick i began to hate meat more and more. Here my cat is dying as my crying my eyes out and still how can i sit here and eat meat. Eat animals that once had a life of there own? And now the answer is i cant. It makes me sick to my stomach, and i refuse. My boyfriend has always been a vegatarian he pointed out to me that just because animals dont talk like we do, whos to say that they dont have there own form of communication? They have feelings and talk and they have a life to live. Who are we to come in and end it all so soon so that way we can eat. You know there are a thousand our things you can eat in the world besides meat. Meats not food. There lovable creautures that have a life.
Posted by: Amanda Boehnen at February 23, 2008 6:39 PMWhy am i commited?
Because meat is BAD!!!!!
Its like.. would you eat your best friend, or a pet? If the answer is yes, then you're horrible. If the answer is no, then why still eat meat? Its the same principle.
I've never really liked eating meat, but i had to eat what my parents told me to. It was a big step telling them "Look, im a vegetarian" and for a while my dad was pretty upset with me and thought it was stupid, but at the end of the day its only your descision and they cant force it down your throat.
Meat is wrong, i wouldnt put anyone or anything through the slaughterhouse or fur farming.
ITS SICK!!!
I am commited to being a vegan and a supporter of animal rights because i believe animals are very cruely treated, and morally this is not right. So many things animals are used for is sickening, ecspecially food. It is gross to eat a living animal first off, and many animals that are killed in big meat factories are literally tortured. People should learn to respect animals. I first found out about PETA, while researching for my persuasive paper for school on why animal experimentation is wrong. Thanks for everything, it is cool to pass out stickers to people and be able to support this organization. I'm glad i can help for what i believe in, and i hope animals in the future will have more rights!!! =]
Posted by: Sydney at February 24, 2008 1:03 PMAnimal rights has been an important part of my life since I was a small girl. Hearing about animal cruelty, seeing commercials on TV, anything sad made me just cry and wonder why--or more importantly--HOW any human with a beating heart could torture another living being? So in fourth grade when I was 9, approaching 10, I saw an ad in a magazing showing a calf and saying "See her as more than a meal." Her big eyes, showing such innocence and knowing she was going to be killed hurt me so much, I went vegetarian. In the years that followed, I went on and off being meat-free, mainly cutting out pigs and cows. In seventh grade I decided there was no going back, and I went completely vegetarian. Then I went vegan in eighth grade, struggling with health issues, which forced me to stay vegetarian.
Animal cruelty: slaughter, abuse, fur, fighting, everything... it just turns my stomach to hear about that sort of thing. I believe that we should live in harmony with nature, which includes its inhabitants, so by saying "no" to meat, you are in touch to what may be the greatest extent. Animals are our friends. We treat our friends with respect...so how is this any different? Even if people aren't ready to jump right into vegetarianism, take it step-by-step: try organic dairy products if you can't be vegan. It's easy to commit to! It helps greatly to be passionate about it too. That is why I am commited to staying cruelty-free.
Posted by: Ashley at February 24, 2008 6:13 PMWhy am I commited? I hate to see animals slaughtered for us to eat their meat, it sickens me, saddens me, and it makes me realize that animals have just as much of a right as humans.
they have the right to live!!! I do not eat meat I am 100 percent vegetarian.
In my honest opinion, I believe that slaghter houses, and slaughtering animals should br illegal I mean think about it how would you feel if you were shackled to a chain, beaten, possibly even shot or stabbed, and then die a sad horrific death, and then be consumed into someone's body so they could have dinner:( It is not right and I hope that one day Peta™ Will put a stop to animal slaughtering once and for all:).

Thats easy! I support animal rights and I am a veggieburger. When I watched the Peta DVD I was pretty close to getting sick. After that I made a promise to never eat meat or wear leather again! My mom didn't believe me at first but i showed her!! What some people do to animals is just plain sick and i think theat we should do the same to them as they did to the animals (if there weren't laws that is ^__^). I'd like to beat the KFC people with a metal pole and see how they like it. VEGGIEBURGER 4 EVER!!!
I have always loved animals and had this special bond wtih them. My grandmother is Cherokee so I inherited her personality and looks, so I always felt thats where I got my bond with animals from. I had 3 older sisters growing up and they were all teenagers when I was born. So I was a lonely kid because I didn't have anyone my age to play with. As a toddler I could not stay away from our pet dog lucy. I would stay in her pen with her all hours of the day and was even caught in her dog house with her asleep and embarassingly enough eating her food with her! ha I have love for all animals not just your ordinary house pets. I started to catch lizards in the field beside my house when I was about 9 and then at age 11 I started to venture in the woods behind my house. I used to love to just sit there and watch animals in there natural enviroment.( Iam blessed to have deer, rabbits, possums, lizards, and other beautiful animals safely living around my house. (hunting is not allowed in those woods!!!!) Then as I got older and my best friends older sister got a car I started finding ways to sneak every stray animal I could find home. (I got the big heart from my mom, except she works with mentally retarted adults) I still have the child like excitment when it comes to animals. I fall in love with everyone I see and despite the fact that I have severe ecxema and recently found out that I am allergic to cats, dogs, and horses:((, I still want to work for peta and eventually have my own no kill animal refuge! (exotic animals too) I have the superwoman syndrome. I want to save every animal I can. My pets have always been there for me when I was lonely and showed me what unconditional love is. It's more than there just cute, they have a right to live and be happy and even though we feed and shelter our pets they give us so much more!!! I feel like in honnor of my past, present, and future pets I should do what I can to help other lost animals who want a home and those people that want an animal to love!
Posted by: Katherine Westbrook at February 25, 2008 10:51 AMI remember being around 6 and seeing a truck with the pigs in the back driving behind me. It was winter and snowing. I watched it and it eventually passsed our car. I was watching out the window as it passed, and a saw a pig's snout sticking through one of the tiny air holes. As soon as i saw that, i broke down and cried. It hurt me so much that those poor animals were being taken to be killed. and they didn't have a clue.
that made me realize...animals are not just food. They are living, breathing creatures. and they feel pain and fear. I didn't go vegetarian until i was 10, because i didn't know how. Around that time i started finding out about animal testing and what is in milk products. I became very, very involved in everything animal around 12. i've never stopped caring for animals and never will.
i also believe animals have every right to life that humans do.
I hope someday more people will see things the same way we do.

Why am I so committed?
Ever since I was small I absolutely loved animals, and was voted most likely to become an activist, but at the age of 12 I started to reseach and found out the horrors that animals faced every day, that was what turned me.
wow, i could write probably a ten page essay of why I'm committed, but 'll just narrow it down,
Everybody and everything deserves a chance to live happily, abuse is wrong! i choose not to suport any type of cruelty.
Posted by: vicky at February 25, 2008 9:03 PMWhy am I commited?
That's quite simple really. :] Animals are like humans, with the exception of the fur, four legs, and longer noses. Like humans, animals feel pain too. I kills me inside when I see an animal being abused or slaughtered. It scares me to think that if I was an animal such as a cow or pig I could end up on someones plate. Or if I was a rabbit or ferrit, I could end up on someones coat. I saw a women with a fur type coat and I got sooo mad at her. I litterally started cussing her under my breath. Seeing what really goes on behind closed doors, makes me scared to death, it makes me angry that people would do such a terrible thing, it embarrass me that were associated with cruel people, it pains me to such a terrible sight. When ever I think about what goes on in those death houses I burst into tears. I can't stand those kinds of people who don't care about what there hearing and what there doing. They hear the cries of the poor thing. LET THE ANIMAL GO! It deserves to live just like you, you jerk. If it wanted to be beaten it would play/fight with another member of it's species. Not be dangling by it's feet screaming out in pain as your tearing it limb from limb. Ripping it's skin leaving it's muscles sore and exposed is not cool. Mr. Cruel and evil if I had the chance I would take a whip to your throat and slice you to peices, freeing all those poor animals. You think it's cool to beat animals and skin live, yeah well I think it's cool that you get the punishment that you deserve. Go ahead and spray that animal with a high powered hose, I'll get a knife and spill your blood and laugh at you in a cruel EVIL cackle and "accidently," spill chemical on that wound, see how you like it. If you don't like it, don't that animal endure the same pain. Peta, I think that the street team should get together and go to a slaughter house and give those workers a taste of there own medicine. See how they like it. They won't but boowoo. I would soooo doo that. And then let the animals go and roam free and the ones who are in a lot of pain, fix them up and close them wounds and fix those broken bones and give them some hope. Let the animals know what waits for them beyond cold metal bars and pliers and knifes and smelly nasty slaughter house floors. Give them the life that they deserve. Give them the hope and free them from what terrible life waits ahead.

Why am I commited to animal rights? There are a million things i could say to answer that question.. but how about this, the fact that animals have rights and feelings, the same as human beings? or how about the fact that millions of them are suffering right at this second? all so that humans can have their meat, or their lether, or anything like that. millions of animals each year are not only killed for no reason, but in a cruel way as well. If the things done to these animals were done to humans, people would be in jail, and charged with cruel and unusual punishment, and murder. Or how about animals being specially breeded to die? things like this need to be put to a stop. How can you be so heartless to something that lives, breathes, feels.... and is completely helpless? That would be the same as killing a human baby. This is why Im commited to animal rights. The thought that one day I might be able to help make the world a less heartless place for these poor animals.
