H&M stands for Hennes & Mauritz! But we think it should stand for Hurray & Marvelous!!! Because after discussions with PETA US about how lambs in the Australian wool industry are mutilated during the "mulesing" procedure, they've made a company policy to source wool from outside Australia. H&M is committed to ensuring that any wool it purchases from down under doesn't come from farmers who still practice this barbaric procedure.
For those unfamiliar with mulesing: Australian farmers breed sheep to grow extremely wrinkly skin so they produce more wool, these folds of excess skin collect urine and moisture in the hot weather and attracted to the moisture, flies lay eggs in the folds of the skin. To prevent the hatched maggots from eating the sheep alive, many Australian ranchers use gardening shears to cut huge chunks of skin and flesh from lamb's backsides (without any painkillers) in this cruel practice. If that wasn't enough, after all that, when the sheep are no longer producing enough wool, they are crammed onto export ships to be sent to the Middle East, where they'll be cruelly slaughtered.

H&M even posted a kick ass mulesing info section in their corporate responsibility section on their Website stating, "H&M does not accept mulesing, the surgical procedure carried out on merino sheep in Australia in order to prevent flystrike. The company has decided to direct its buying towards other countries of origin and other suppliers in Australia that can guarantee mulesing-free merino wool."
We love H&M! Now we've got just one more reason to go shopping!

WoohOO!!! I think it's awesome when such fashionable and reputable stores do things like these!! I will so shop there!!
I love PETA and all the blessed people who stand up for animals. I pray for you every day for your success in all that you do for animals. God bless you all.
Better….but how about not using wool AT ALL????!!
Thats such good news! No one understands why I don't buy wool when I tell them, but I'm glad things are changing- even if slowly!
Thank you so much for posting this- honestly, I didn't know anything about it…and now I do.
aw, good H&M. :]
YEY!!!
That is absolutely fantastic. Bravo H&M. It revives my faith in corporate responsibility. P.S. To Austrailian farmers: you'll get more wool if you have sheep…. not taking care of sheep = no new wool.. and no new wool = no more business = no money.
that's so great. it's so embarassing that farmers from my home country treat sheep like that. i believe it is being phased out though. H&M is great =] i shopped there while i was in switzreland. i think it's great that a large chain store has decided not to support this cruel practise.
Great stuff H&M to source your wool from a more caring supplier – YOU ARE FAB !!!
i may not be vegitarian, but i do love hearing stories like this fighting against animal culity. i believe that this is a GREAT thing, more companies need to be like this thats for sure. Torturing them is totally uncalled for. and skinning animals (such as the competition you hvae on who is the trashiest in their fur) is totally wrong as well.
woot..one step at a time. U GO H&M
YEY
im happy now..
more shops should do this !
We are getting there however slowly. I don`t understand those murderers. How can they come home and kiss their children after finishing such a barbaric work-day ?!!! I`m geting sick watching the video.
Why oh why there still is not a law preventing this kind of animal abuse ?!!! When will all that stop ?! When all humans will stop eating meat !!!
thank you h&m
god bless you always.
i 'll be shopping h&m today..
thank you
I am glad, that is awesome…
