My Boyfriend's Tombstone January 15, 2008

Posted by Lara Sanders | Permalink | Comments ( 51 ) | TrackBack

One of the best things about working for PETA is that something surprises me on a daily basis. Like the time I walked into the restroom and saw a giant carrot washing her hands. Or the time I got to dress up as a giant Nugget.

The latest thing to surprise me was receiving an email from Pulin with a pic of my boyfriend's tombstone. Yep, you heard me right...my boyfriend's tombstone.

Matt_tombstone.JPG

Here's the back story: PETA purchased the gravesite next to Colonel Sanders' in a cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. We then put up a tombstone with Matt's name inscribed on it along with a poem.

What they didn't know was that the first letter of each line of the poem spelled out "KFC Tortures Birds"! That is until we painted it red...

painting_closeup.JPG

Then the jig was up. We had to take the tombstone down, but not before PETA got a bunch of press about the grave, bringing attention to the cruel way KFC treats its chickens. All in all it was just another day at PETA.

xoxo-Lara

P.S. Matt is alive and well.

wow, that's really cool. maybe someday humanity will grow out of needing meat and loose those wimpy front teeth, and grow an extra stomach so we can reguratate and chew our own cud!

well obviously KFC has something to hide if they get so defensive about it. I mean people should know what they are eating if they go to KFC. Freedom of Speech is one of our rights, we should exercise that right and get the truth out there!
GO PETA!!!!

That sounds like a cool idea. Maybe we could come up with other sweet things to raise awareness like that.

That's pretty trippy that the poem spelled that out. [: But I think it's completely unfair that they made you take it down. I wholeheartedly agree that what KFC is doing is an abomination. I never liked KFC to begin with, this just strengthens my resolve. A KFC near my house was just 'renovated' too. It's disgusting. I wish the place would be torn down

very clever, but unfortunately i love kfc. i think the chicken tastes great and you cant beat the biscuits. but i think torturing animals is completely wrong, and haven't eaten there in a year and a half. they should just stop with the horrible treatment so i can go back. i have a wuestion for the vegetarians in the group. why do you feel the need to preach vegetarianism? i cant eat meat somewhere without one of you telling me that i am a horrible person and should stop eating meat. its not like i am telling you that vegetables like corn are the reason that the U.S.A's economy is crappy. leave us meat eaters alone, most of us care how our food is treated and killed.

isn't that going a lil far? i mean PETA is great about animal rights but I think they are a little too agressive we need to bring understanding through example and cooperative mutual coordination.

i surely like the poem ! but yes i agree you should have stood your ground? i don't get how they could make you remove the stone? please explain what grounds they had when you purchased the lot and the stone?

As cool as the poem was, the fact that it was in a graveyard was a bit uncouth. It would be like hanging a meet your meat poster or some such in the sanctuary of a church. There are some places where everything but what is at hand should be put aside. When I visit a graveyard, its generally to visit a loved one, and I don't need to be greeted by that kind of thing while doing it. Plus, I doubt the original Sanders did anything like what is done to the chickens nowadays.

Sanders sold the Kentucky Fried Chicken corporation in 1964, although he remained its corporate spokesman until his death. In 1971 he sued Heublein Inc. (the KFC parent company at the time) over alleged misuse of his image in promoting products he had not helped develop. In 1975 Heublein Inc. unsuccessfully sued Sanders for libel after he publicly referred to their gravy as "sludge" with a "wallpaper taste".

As you can see he sold the company BEFORE it got this bad, sure i don't believe in eating meat but
I'm pretty sure he did not want all of this to happen. Don't you think its kind of rude to put something that against him next to his final resting place?!?!?!?!

Posted by: Rae at May 13, 2008 8:40 PM

i totally agree, that is pretty disrespectful. Sure he started the company, but i doubt he wanted things t be hadnled the way they have been, plus, that's his grave. It's almost sick.

oh that rocks! sure it was a un-religiouse and all to put it in a grave yard but how do the authorothies know it purposly said " KFC TORTURES BIRDS" i mean honestly!!! Maybe a guy named Matt Prescott died there and he wuz a poet who loved animals and the grave just happended to be there. It could happen!!! Meat sucks! It says:

this is so inspiring. dont listen to those people saying this is bad and its his final resting place blah blah. i think that it was a great poem and it will catch alot of attention. sure peta, myself and other people like us are crazy about animal rights but its doing so much good in the world. you think there would be anywhere as many vegetarians or vegans in the world without them? i know peta inspired me with alot of my lifestyle choices. bottom line: peta gets shit done.

you're my hero!

Posted by: kate at May 24, 2008 9:31 AM

Yes it is his final resting place, and I agree, if not well thought it it seems like a disrespectful gesture. However, it also being said in posts, that he had sold the company and had complaints about it, he may just have been all for a move like this. If you think about it.

We'll never know, but it's a pleasant and motivating thought to think that just maybe (hopefully), in a case like this, he'd be on our side. At least I think so. :)

Someone had asked on here too, why vegetarians and vegans feel the need to push thier beliefs on people who eat meat. Not all of us do. I will tell people that I am, and a lot of the time they will ask ME questions, of course I am more than willing to state my case, as would most veggies I'd think. I never critisize meat eaters though. I use to be one too, a lot of us where at some time. Everyone makes up thier own minds about it, but I definately promote switching to vegetarianism or veganism, I've never felt more healthy since I have, and it's better for the animals too. ^_^

Im recently vegetarian thanks to peta's "Meet your Meat" video I think that this was an awesome idea and down with kfc. Though i dont think eating meat is wrong i just chose not to because of the treatment.i dont care if those around me eat meat though, I have already convinced my boyfriend to go veg. i plan to eventually convince the world. hopefully peta will help. if im only 16 and can see that this is wrong then maybe everyone else can.

Ok you may have a point to make but i think it was too far to do that beside the Colonel's grave, it's a total lack of respect. As someone else above said, he sold the company before it got bad, so it's hardly his fault is it?

okay, i'm not even vegetarian or vegan but i refuse to eat chicken, period, especially KFC's. it's disgusting. i'm the only person in my house who won't eat it. The others say "who cares, they are only animals" when animals have feelings too. they should have kept that grave there.

and I'm proud tht I haven't. Well whatever. You ppl

What is the PETA stand on pet ownership ?
What is the PETA stand on zoo's ?

The whole grave thing was Childish and vitriolic.

As far as KFC and it's treatment of there Livestock. I believe That if an Animal has to be slaughtered, it should be done in a Humane and cost effective method. There should be standards and they should be strictly enforced.

I do believe Human Beings have a right to kill Animals to feed themselves, but I certainly do not believe that torture should be part of the process..

For those of you in this post who feel PETA is too aggressive and that they should reason with the population through talk instead, maybe you should read through all the web site information that PETA has posted!
You are dealing with reasonable people and unreasable, airhead, fanatics, like kfc lover above on June 11. They have nothing better to do than come in here and try to rile us up so that they can get their jollies off and feel important. They need attention and have to get it negatively because there is nothng positive about them. The videos "made him laugh". Well it made me laugh out loud that he needs to go out of his way to disrespect a group of people who didn't ask him to come to this site in the first place, just to validate his existence. When you have people breaking the law with indifference and getting away with it like KFC, factory farms, circuses, roadside zoos, and breeders, you have to fight fire with fire. Talking will not do anything because these people have such blatant disregard that you have to use shock power to get the attention that is needed to create change! Keep it up PETA and get the media to notice. Grassroots activism is the key and you guys have the know-how. Power and greed and the love of money have met their match. Besides kfc lover will have to worry about heart disease, colesterol, and obesity from eating all the kfc he "LOVES" so sneering at us will come back to bite him in the a-- someday. LOL LOL

Ok, for all those people who are feeling bad for the colonel, it has nothing to do with him. This is an activist movement that is trying to get a point across. That is its sole purpose. Also for the basher and the kfc lover GET OFF PETA! If you don't support the site then get off. Your hypocrisy and ignorance is embarassing actually. I don't believe Peta is aggressive, and if it is it's because it needs to be. How else will anyone listen? Those who say it is aggressive are those that are angry at hearing the truth. Be open minded.
Peta rocks!

im not saying that what kfc does is ok, but I wouldn't entirely blame Sanders. Sure he started the business, but that was when he was in his 40s.He only took to franchising Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants at the age of 65! In 1964 he sold the corporation, only acting as the spokes person for the restaurant until he died. All Im saying is that is seems wrong to use his image holding tortured chickens, because he hasn't even been a real part in this company for more than 20 years since he died in 1980, hes just the poor sap whos image got stuck to it. I think that if he was alive that maybe he could have pushed the new owners to change policies concerning the neglect and mistreatment of chickens. That he did love to make chicken for people and have them enjoy it and that he loved the restaurant, obviously or he wouldn't have started a bigger franchise, but I think he is probably rolling in his grave now over all of the hullabaloo that has been going on. Please don't take offense, this is just my opinion.

And one last point- Does that mean that by boycotting KFC I should boycott Randy Quaid too? He does voice overs of the colonel for commercials, but he is an amazing actor, and it sucks he would choose KFC to make some money, but I really would rather keep him in my good books.

Why the hell would you support something like THAT?!

I've just started a KFC Cruelty petition with some of my friends and the ammount of people who dont know about this or are in denial is gob-smacking! We havent even gone a quarter of the way around the school with our petition and we already have 80 signatures in one day.

I still can't believe that someone would support KFC!! It's disgusting. Go PETA!! :D
